You would need the Technologist feat in order to understand it. Yes I know you hate feats that limit already existing things. But there is a reason that there has not been an industrial revolution yet.
Well darn. According to the feat, I am treated as untrained in all of those skills. According to the knowledge skill, I cannot make an untrained Knowledge check with a DC higher than 10. However, it also states that if I have access to an extensive library that covers a specific skill, this limit is removed. The time to make checks using a library, however, increases to 1d4 hours. Particularly complete libraries might even grant a bonus on Knowledge checks in the fields that they cover (I guess it's a good thing that my library is so comprehensive).
Here is a list of things a person can learn, even without ranks in Knowledge:
I figure the first two would apply in this case. (What's it made of? Is it dangerous?) I will have to get back to my library before I can learn more.

My brother managed to save my laptop. Sadly though he's recommened a full factory restore. Plus the keyboard and touchpad on it are shot. So basically using it as a desk top for now until I save up for a new one.
At the moment I'm transferring files (surprisingly little of it pornographic) over to various hidey holes. Once that's done I restore it then begin the long slow process of getting my stuff back in order.
So I should be able to post Saturday.

Once we return to the safety of the kingdom, I will see if I can research a spell that might allow us to power the device using magic.
Ok you win take 600 xp each and 5 of your own undead Trolls over your control. Now I advise you to figure out a way to generate power or go and find the GreenSword in K35.
That's fine with me, but let's not forget the long term plans we discussed as well:
Now that we've taken the Tuskwater and Candlemere, I'm thinking we should expand our kingdom to fill out more of the Kamelands to the South and East.
Once we've incorporated that into our territory, I think maybe we should start claiming both the forest territory between Skunk River and Thorn River to the North, as well as the Old Sycamore and the two bridges that flank it in the Northeast. Those rivers make for a natural, defensive border for our nation and the Temple of the Elk and the Old Sycamore should make for natural fortified outposts.
This will ultimately increase out kingdom's size from 10 hexes to ~25 hexes.
If the Troll Fort hex is cleared, we can move into K31 and begin working our way to the treasure rumored to be in K35. Barring complications, it should add ~2 days to our journey for every detour hex we decide to explore.
With our new skeleton bodyguards in tow, I'm feeling pretty good about the idea of extending our expedition (though keep mind we've been away for almost a week already).

GM, here's a cool random forest map generator tool that I found: http://www.gozzys.com/wilderness-maps
I thought it might help since we keep going through so many forests as of late.

It is a cool tool. Do wish it was more clear on what kind of terrain is where.

I'm not certain overlapping areas of entangle would actually do much more than a single casting would. You can't really get entangled more than once. Forcing five saves is pretty awful though. :P
However, having the castings placed in a contiguous array could make for one HUGE coverage area if that was desired.
In any case, your circles were a little small. 40-foot radius means circles 80 feet across. That's most of the map with one casting! I took the liberty of adjusting it for you (I assume you didn't want to catch any of the assassin vines or the quickwood.
Just to be clear, there's no difficult terrain except for the entangle area? And the large trees are wall-like obstacles?

I cannot wait until I'm 7th-level, and will be able to prepare more than one 3rd-level spell. Switching necessary spells out mid-combat just eats up way too much time.
How many days has it been since the last fight?
Travel and exploration times between hexes would dictate that it's a day or two later.

I suppose we should probably come up with a default marching order for such situations.
Assuming a single profile line, how about Mal in front, the spellcaster Elhedril and Riva in the middle, and our only healer Toran in the back? This way, the weak spellcasters are protected regardless of which direction we are attacked from.
Alternatively, we could have Mal in front, Toran behind him to heal and support, then the casters in the back. This might work better as Toran would have easier access to the whole party, lest we spread out due to area attacks or something. Since he has a fair bit of combat power, it would also keep him closer to the perceived "front line."
All of the NPCs and wagons can be further back, trekking over terrain and areas we have already traversed safely ourselves (think of them as our supply line and us as their advanced scouting party).
