Rise of the Runelords Redux

Game Master Loup Blanc

A challenging update to a classic campaign, using new materials and expansions.

If Alek gets picked for the game he would be searching for the group of giants that attacked his home. Trying to find out whether it was just a roaming giant gang or as the game progresses if it is tied to the greater happenings.

Alright, checking in again. I'd have loved to get more responses out today (yesterday), but the road was busy again, and so was our arrival. That said, tomorrow and the next couple days should be much smoother sailing! I hope to start going over character submissions in-depth tomorrow.

Regarding Campaign traits, do our choices also include the ones found in the "Varisia, Birthplace of Legends" book (Sandpoint Faithful, Thrill Seeker) and/or the ones found in the "Advanced Player's Guide" book (Black Sheep, Favored Son/Daughter, Outlander)?

The choices from the Varisia book are fine, but I won't include the options from the Advanced Player's Guide. They can sort of fit, but it's a little forced for my liking, and there are other options available.

Dairkal wrote:
Might be bit of a dumb question, but in your OP, you said that 'we'll be using gestalt for leveling up' does that mean for level one we're single class, and then 2+ we gestalt?

That's not dumb, it's worth clarifying. You start as gestalt from level one, and it'll continue that way for the entire campaign.

Whiskey and a Bonesaw wrote:
Quick question: Is health also maxed?

At first level, certainly. Thereafter, perhaps. More likely I'll give an above-average standard.

chillblame wrote:
Question on your feat tax rules

You make a fair point. Point-Blank Shot is allowed as a feat, and it applies within the first range increment rather than thirty feet. (Because why can I PBS with a dagger at its third range increment, but not with a bow within its first?) It just isn't a prerequisite for anything else.

HedwickTheWorldly wrote:
what are your thoughts on the Paladin/Druid alignment requirement discrepancy?

If you can write me a good backstory/personality writeup, I could potentially be okay with a Neutral Good or Lawful Neutral Paladin. Alternatively, I'd allow the Enlightened Warrior aasimar race trait (which I allow for all aasimar, not just idyllkin) to work for paladins as well monks, if that could fit your concept at all. (I agree that the Grey Paladin archetype is unfortunately trashy, and I hope to rewrite it at some point, but haven't yet.)

Raezial the Thamendaemon wrote:
How would you feel about a Half-Elf Gunslinger (Bolt Ace)/Magus (Eldritch Archer)?

I've got no issue with that combination. I daresay it could make a crossbow build very viable and competent.

Monkeygod wrote:
How are we handling FCB? Do we get both, gotta pick one and stick with it, pick one each level?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the middle option there, but it'll work as standard (at least as I understand it). You choose one class as your Favored Class, and any time you take a level in that class, you can pick one of the bonuses to gain. (If you have a way to get multiple favored classes, no shenanigans of double bonuses from gestalting.)

GM Blood wrote:
Could I choose the Persistence Inquisition?

From my reading of things, any Druid could in theory pick up an Inquisition in place of a Domain, so sure. I've got no issues there.

Gobo Horde wrote:
If I have 2 PoW clases gestalted together, how do I handle Maneuvers Known and Readied?

Hmm. This is some tricky territory. I'll need to think on this some, but my gut is that maneuvers readied and known would stay separate on each side, much like spellcasting. I'll roll with that for now, but as per the regular ruling, you can't have the same maneuver readied more than once. As far as the Foretold Curse, it seems intriguing, so I'll allow it to see what you do with it. Could add a neat element to things.

Later on, Gobo Horde wrote:
Would you allow me to take the Mithral Current disipline with the Stalker class?

Sure, you can add that discipline to your options instead of Riven Hourglass or Tempest Gale. (If you really want both of those, PM me and we can work something out.)

Cale Vatay wrote:
Given that armor proficiency is a feat, would class given armor proficiency count as a feat?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's how it works in general. (They specifically call it out for Shield Proficiency, but if you're proficient you're proficient, and I'd consider that the same as having the feat.)

That's all for tonight, but as I said, I'm truly hoping to go over the characters put forward so far in detail and offer feedback on them! Right now I need to get some sleep.

By the way, for those using Hero Lab, there is a community package for it that introduces and handles gestalt character creation. It is not perfect (e.g. it has a problem calculating background skills) and can be a bit wonky, but if you are willing to navigate a couple of links, check it out at the following:

Awesome. That means that my familiar maybe a monkey? Or an eagle? I'll be replacing it with improved familiar eventually but regardless it's cool that I have some use for those armor and weapon proficiencies I wasn't going to use

Here is the submission for Tanner Nielsen.

Tsura Vhiski
LG Human Female
Warlord (Steelfist Commando) / Monk (Master of Many Styles, Scaled Fist)

Description:

Hair: Black
Eyes: Red
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 220lb

You see a well-groomed human woman with black hair loosely gathered at her shoulders. Her eyes are a deep red, with small flecks of silver near the iris. Her skin is fair and pale. She has small freckles on her nose, high cheek bones, and a strong jaw. She appears to have a distant ancestor who was... something. She has pointed ears and a bifurcated tongue. She dressed in a simple red tabard and trousers. She is quite tall and broad, with a solid frame and straight posture.

Personality:

Tsura leads business interactions with a no-nonsense attitude that she cultivated in her monastic training. Social interactions are another matter. She tends to be loud, boisterous, and quite forward. She enjoys hard fighting, hard drinking, and hard loving. She is loyal and courageous to those who have her friendship - while terrible and vindictive to those who attack or betray her. She has a special weakness for mead and honey rolls, and has been known to crack a skull or two when someone made jokes about her size.

Background:

Tsura is a native of Magnimar, and born to a family of Varisian entertainers. The family previously enjoyed some success as dancers and singers, but the fickle crowds of the metropolis crave constant novelty, and by the time Tsura was born the family was nearly destitute. Her memories as a young child were of hunger and uncertainty as the family struggled to survive. Her mother, Mara, died of sickness when she was four-years-old, and her father, Luca, was forced to join the Scarni to make enough money to feed Tsura and her two older sisters.

The siblings followed their father in larceny, and Tsura was taught to beg and steal when she was six. Her youth and pitiful state allowed her to bring in a respectable amount of money, and she and her sisters made a game of filching belt pouches from tourists and merchants. Her world came crashing down one day when she tried to pick the pocket of Chelaxian wizard. After fleeing with his purse, the spellcaster divined the location of his money and followed the girls back to their home.

The sisters were clapped in irons by the town guard and taken to jail. Under questioning by the guard, they quickly divulged the activities of their father's gang, and the identities and locations of its leadership. The guardsmen were quick in finding and arresting the ringleaders, who were tried and sentenced to years of hard labor. Among them was the head boss, a ruthless and violent man named Giuseppe.

In retaliation, Luca was attacked and maimed by his gang. The girls returned home from the jail to find him unconscious and with two broken knees. Crippled and unable to provide for them, he took them to a temple of Desna and begged the priest to take them in as wards. The priest, Father Tanrid, took pity on the girls. In exchange for room and board, they were expected to engage in character-building work.

Robbed of her mother, and abandoned by her father, Tsura became withdrawn and angry. Her thoughts were devoted to revenge against her enemies, both real and imagined. She kept a mental list of those who would face her retribution. Father Tanrid saw the young girl's demeanor change as weeks and months passed, and decided to take her as his personal project. He decided she needed to depart from Magnimar and make a fresh start away from the terrors of her past. A fresh start in Sandpoint.

Tsura was transferred to the care of Father Tobyn. While her time with him was short prior to fire that engulfed the old temple, it had a profound impact on her. She was able to find solace in Desna, and put aside her old life. She made new friends, and relief on those friends after the old priest died. She has spent her time training her body and mind, becoming a devoted monk of Desna and finding new purpose in protecting her adopted home.

Here are some crunch and fluff of the guy I am working on. Still trying to decide on the whole spell-like ability/variant tiefling ability thing, as well as background and whatnot. Still, this should give some idea of what I am going for, at least mechanically. Basically, the kineticist side is the main one, with the fighter side acting supportively and adding some extra skills and flexibility down the road via the Advanced Armor Training and Advanced Weapon Training options from the relevant books.

Of Book and Covers:
Fit and healthy and somewhat slender of build, Caleb stands around five feet and ten inches tall, not exactly what one might call an imposing figure. Despite his fiendish heritage he appears to lack those distinct physical traits that are so characteristic of most members of his race, such as horns or a tail or other even more disturbing features. Indeed he appears to be quite human, albeit one who must have had an ancestor with some elven blood running through their veins, or at least that is what people generally make of his fair skin, grayish-white hair, slightly pointed ears and golden eyes.

Generally dressed in simple and comfortable clothes, clothes which are lined with several concealed pockets, he appears to carry little to nothing in the way of weapons; no sword or bow, no staff, no spellbook or pouch of spell components. Still, he does keep a cold iron dagger in a spring loaded wrist sheath hidden beneath his right sleeve, just in case. Other that that, a couple of belt pouches and a well-made backpack full of various useful items make up the rest of his belongings. And perhaps some light armor or other when the circumstances call for it.

Anyway, this is a pretty long submission, I think I got too carried away!

I've been putting off watching the BBC Sherlock for years, why'd you have to make me scratch that itch! You despicably brilliant person.

Or, as Gao would put it - "One quick quill can move more people than a hundred quick ships."

Backstory and crunch of the dispenser of wisdom and fists is up! I'm pretty sure RotRL isn't as Tian-heavy as Jade Regent, but I don't think a monk of the mystical persuasion would be too lost there.

Ha! Yeah I'm definitely shooting for a Sherlock/Will Graham (empath-type) investigator with a sprinkling of Dr House for good measure.

Very useful.

I was just about to post the same thing as I read F. Castor post, I currently have both turned on and its a big help(Background skills have always calculated wrong with gestalt)

Any questions I had were answered in the original post or by someone else.

Hammstone

Crunch should be there. Still working on story.

Yes indeed, I've been using the gestalt pack for a while. Once you manually adjust the background skills, it's pretty good.

Ah! I knew I missed something - I'll change Gao from an Outlander to a Scholar of the Ancients in such case - Thassilon is one nation that predates even some in Tian-Xia.

Question, GM - as Tian-Dtang is a place ruled by mighty sorcerers, as I found out, would it be possible to take Lore (Magic Kings) instead of Military Commanders? I'm aware it might be somewhat meta, but I'm not expecting the DC's for the Runelords to be anything but extremely high DC's revealing little information. I'm not that hard set on it, but I felt like I'd have to ask. If that feels a bit cheesy, I'd understand, and I might change it to Linguistics instead.

Gonna pull out of the running for this one - I can't get a character together in a way that I'm happy with. Have fun, gang!

Question: I am building a rogue/stalker. How will Sneak Attack and Deadly Attack work? Deadly Attack only works after a crit but there are ways to make it proc off the same stuff sneak attack does and it lasts longer when it does. Do I stack the damage when they both work or take the higher bonus?

Hey Loup, I was wondering how complete you'd like the submissions to be mechanically at this point?

I'm satisfied with my backstory and concept of Investigator/Magus, but will likely agonise over choices right up until deadline day!

Excelent! I aim to be a melee class so the loss of Tempest Gale is no skin off of my back!

After some more thought I have another idea but it's accompanied by a question first:

Would you allow a Yaddithian? They are in bestiary 6.

The idea would be for the character having recently awoken under Kaer Maga. He would have been one of the last specimens handed over to the caulborn by Runelord Haphrama before Haphrama was killed and replaced by Karzoug. He was placed in stasis for later consumption and then forgotten about.
He awoke a few years back but had been stuck in his room where he survived on rats and other vermin and was freed when one of the city's many factions wanted to expand their territory. They were surprised to find anything there and captured him before handing him over to a scholar to be studied. He enchanted the scholar's assistants and escaped before they could dissect him.
He then fled Kaer Maga and ended up in Sandpoint, where he tries to keep his identity hidden through a combination of magic and a deep hood.

For the character itself, he'll start out rather unsure and a bit scared but the intend is to eventually have him grow out of that. I suspect some ALF inspired antics.

Ah, there you go! Go ahead and use that. I knew there was something that did it, but in my cursory search I couldn't find it.

Perspicacious Gao wrote:

I'm okay with that. As you said, any DCs for even Lore checks related to Runelords are extremely high, since it's mostly lost knowledge as to their mere existence, let alone what they were like.

Since they use the same progression and are both precision damage, I'm going to rule that they don't stack, so if you got a critical hit while flanking at 1st level, you'd deal 1d6 extra damage, not 2d6. You would still benefit from Deadly Strikes increasing with higher critical multipliers, and you'd be able to activate either of them as your choice if applicable.

GM-JZ wrote:

Backstory and concept are definitely more important to me than mechanics, but I do need to have a solid build to show me basically what you're going for. I allow mechanical changes even once the game has started, so long as you stick to the same concept for your character overall, so no worries about changing choices or decisions--I totally get that. I just need a full build to show that you're dedicated to the character and the game, and to give me an idea of what you're going for!

While the premise is interesting, as is the race, I don't think that would really fit the tone and scope of this game, so I'd rather not. It is an interesting concept, though!

I understand, I'll look at something else. I'd say it's a general problem for them, they don't really fit anywhere apart from Iron Gods.

Hey Loup, would you be fine with my character taking two drawbacks but only getting one trait? I found two that are really flavourful and don't mind having a little extra punishment.

My character concept and back story are near complete, though his back story needs some more work. I'm leaving for con tomorrow morning and won't be back til Monday night to complete things. Hope you'll give that much time.

Just finished the last of the character personality and party role ideals.

Okay, here's the first pass at going through characters as they've been submitted so far, and checking things out. Originally I was trying to get them in the order of being posted in the thread, but double-checking things led them to open out of order, and now it's just in the order of the tabs in my browser when I start.

There's also a decent chance I've missed people--I only went with pretty full or obvious submissions for this pass, so if you only posted a backstory in a spoiler in a regular post, I may well have missed it--so if that's the case for you, please call it to my attention! (And also repost whatever you had, or link to the old post, so I can more easily look things over.) I also might screw things up when looking at the sheets themselves, although I hope to get it all right.

F. Castor/Caleb Rook:
Mechanics look good as far as I can tell, although I'm not sure how your resistances are 7 rather than 5. I assume it's something I'm just not noticing on the sheet, though.

Hammerstone:
Double check your skills, because one or two of them looked off to me, but otherwise your numbers look right. Your Background looks like some of it got chopped off; I'd definitely like to see where it was going, particularly since the choice of Favored Enemy seems a little odd. Given how much else the character is built towards killing giants--and I'd love to see some reason for that in the backstory as well--I'm surprised that isn't also the choice for Favored Enemy.

Rafael Morganis:
I can't comment too much on the mechanics until you work it back to 1st level, but it does give me an idea of where you're going--a solid archery build with some extra stuff on the side to keep options open. The backstory seems fine, although a little more direct tying into Sandpoint could be nice, and your Giant Slayer campaign trait isn't really worked in there at the moment.

Tsura Vhiski:
The background seems solid, although I'd love to know a little more about what Tsura's been up to in Sandpoint since the fire--how does she get along with the new priest, who if anyone does she like in town, that sort of thing. As far as mechanics go, you look solid!

Ruaidhrigh Katanalisko:
Your background seems pretty solid, although potentially a little much for a 1st level character... but not to a gratuitous amount or anything, so I'm not really concerned. Mechanically you seem pretty solid, although I'm curious about the Order of the Eastern Star--I'm not really seeing anything in the background that would lend itself to that Order, so I'm curious as to how Rory would have joined it (or something like it). For that matter, he's wearing medium armor, which counteracts the Order's special abilities.

Shara Alazna:
You look fine mechanically as far as I can tell, although you don't seem to be using the Reckless trait at the moment; you may have plans for it down the line, but otherwise you could take a drawback to keep the rest of your traits. Your backstory seems very solid as well. I am curious as to how long ago Shara left Sandpoint to study in Magnimar, particularly if it was before or after the Late Unpleasantness; I also assume her mother is still alive and working at the Hagfish?

Koran Lashorn:
You look solid mechanically, although going in with an AC of 10 is a very risky proposition. Your backstory is fine, although I'd love to see more distinct ties to why Koran's come to Sandpoint; it could be as simple as being from a nearby region to begin with, perhaps making the Lashorns a noble family from Magnimar? If you have ideas, I'm happy to work with you to integrate things a little more fully.

Dairkal:
I can't speak much to the mechanics since you're advanced to 4 at the moment, although I can see that you have a pretty straightforward and solid build going on. His backstory seems fitting for the character, and presumably explains why he's come to Sandpoint for the Swallowtail Festival, so that looks very good to me.

Corso Gaczi:
A couple numbers here and there look off, so double check your sheet--one that jumps out early on is your AC, which is 2 lower than it should be. I really like your backstory, though, and while it doesn't distinctly tie him to Sandpoint, it does set Corso up as the type who'd go out of his way to help the town--fortuitous given the date of his arrival. (I presume the intent is for him to arrive in town on the day of the festival?)

Perspicacious Gao:
First off, I love the write-up scene you have and what it presents of the character. It leaves me wanting to know more: what is his story, how did he come to Sandpoint, all that good stuff. As far as mechanics go, earlier your campaign trait choice wouldn't have worked, but I'm reversing my ruling there to allow more options for folks, so everything looks good to me.

Deiniol Sylvir:
I very much enjoyed your write-up, and I like what you're going for with this character. He seems very interesting, and his presence in Sandpoint is explained well by the campaign trait you're presumably going for and the end of the background section. I look forward to seeing the mechanics!

Alekzander Ingerbalaur:
You look good in terms of mechanics, and I'd already commented on your backstory being solid enough. I assume the idea is that Alek is arriving in Sandpoint on or close to the day of the Swallowtail Festival?

Whew! Great characters so far, not that I'm at all surprised by that.

As a note on something that came up while looking at characters and thinking on things, I'm reversing a prior ruling. The sample campaign traits from the Advanced Player's Guide are available as options for characters to take. While they don't always fit very well, they do offer some different options for backgrounds, and might be more fitting for some characters than the choices in the newer books.

Also, in case anyone's wondering, recruitment is still open. I might start winding things down in a day or two if it seems like interest is petering out and submissions are coming in, but for now things are very much still open here!

Silver Crusade

I believe that I have polished Whakau Whakau ('wh' pronounced as an 'f') to a gleaming shine, and I humbly submit him for consideration.

(Albino Tengu Paladin of Shelyn - aiming for an Oradin build)

EDIT: Ninja'd by the first role call list!

Just as a quick comment, Whakau--I think you missed that we're using gestalt rules for this. Right now it looks like you're just a paladin.

Spoiler:
Honestly, I didn't really see any orders that just really jumped out at me. With him worshiping an Elemental Lord, I figured their focus on "unimaginable threats from beyond the mortal realms" etc might make a little more sense, though he hates giants more than anything. The line about "concerning themselves not with the trivial pursuit of morality, but rather with ensuring the survival of society itself" helps too, with him being True Neutral-Cockatrice didn't seem right for him, nor did any of the especially Good ones. Unfortunately I don't think there's really an anti-giant cavalier order (or one for pyromaniacs, which would also suit him well). I spaced on the light armor part. Let me look through the orders again and see if there's something I like more.

Edit: On review, I think I'll make him a Ronin/Knight Errant.
Until I went back and read the orders more thoroughly, I had thought that one was only for Samurai.

Oh, my! Why I didn't see this earlier is beyond me. Thinking Psychic/Tattooed Sorcerer of the Arcane or perhaps Fey Bloodline. Yes I know both those classes use different stats, and I may change the psychic to something else, most likely something spellcaster... Although I really like the idea of combined psychic and Sorcerer... <_< I don't feel like wizard...

And I'm thinking lawful evil, because if I can play any evil as a team player it's that one

Although I'll build a Neutral character instead, so not to cause issues.

Liberty's Edge

Here is that alias, not finished, but I'm sticking with Sorcerer psychic.

Just as a quick comment, Whakau--I think you missed that we're using gestalt rules for this. Right now it looks like you're just a paladin.

Well now, that's embarrassing.....it looks like I haven't done it correctly the first time. Let's try again.

TAKE 2: I believe that I have polished Whakau Whakau ('wh' pronounced as an 'f') to a gleaming shine, and I humbly submit him for consideration.

backstory:

Cale's father was a stage magician for a traveling theater/carnival, (around expert 6, bard 1) his mother worked with them as a medicine woman (adept class, somewhere around Lvl 3 to 5 or so maybe with a level of alchemist) and fortune teller so because of their jobs Cale had always been fascinated with real magic, and because of the stories they would tell he always wanted to be a hero, to have his name go down in legend
Ever since he found that what his father did for a living was mostly fake, he vowed to learn real magic and become the greatest wizard... No... Greatest hero ever known.
He took the first opportunity he could to leave his family after that point, signing up to be a bodyguard for a human noble born wizard by the name of Rin, learning what he could from her and her assistants to make him a better guard and (eventually) assistant to her.

He left the mage in good standing for the religious festival and was told that he could have his old job back if he wanted it and if he was still alive next time they saw each other, but he doesn't expect to have to take her up on this

quirks
he taps his fingers together when excited,
he waves his arms a bit when he talks sometimes
he paces back and forth and talks to himself when thinking hard on something in particular
he frequently flips a coin when bored

Build sweet spots

level 3: Mutagen, Black Blade

Level 5 Weapon training (and qualifing for advanced weapon training), full int to AC (probably)

level 7 I basically always go first

Level 9: I basically critical hit one of every four hits

(I basically get very nice things on the odd levels)

Spoiler:
Thanks for the advice, I've edited the build a bit for mage armor rather than charm person, as well as raising my dex to 13 and cha to 18. that will put me at 15 AC if i cast mage armor, 11 if i don't, and 19 against smite evil targets. I have slightly edited backstory as well, and plan to do a bit more. the premise of why he came boils down to he wanted to study the old light.

I am pulling out, good luck everyone.

Stuff:
Yeah, I plan to take Acrobatics later. It's too useful of a tool for disengaging from enemies for me not to have it. I just don't have enough skill points to take it at 1st level along with the social skills and all the knowledge skills I wanted. Since I'm an Int-based caster, I'll be getting more Int in the future to get some extra skills and round out stuff I want, so I wanted it as a class skill for when I get around to that. Plus I think Reckless is a fitting trait for a fiery red-head who favors blasting spells.

Shara left town just at the beginning of the Late Unpleasantness, so she missed pretty much all of the interesting stuff. She's a bit disturbed by how much bad stuff went down right after she left. This actually isn't in my backstory because Shara doesn't actually know it, but I meant to bring it up because it's important. The reason she lost control of her magic (Edited my backstory a little. I talked that out with the last GM who has Shara in his game, but never actually added it to the write-up) and had to leave for proper arcane training was the same runewell that caused the Late Unpleasantness. The big twist in her backstory is that the 'danger' in her bloodline is the Runelords. Her Arcane Bloodline comes directly from Runelord Alaznist, and she's the closest thing the world has left to an heir to the Runelord of Wrath. Not that it means a lot since Thassilon has been gone for thousands of years. When the Runewell opened, her wrath tainted magic went nuts and she had a couple of weeks of uncontrolled evocation explosions before she was shipped of the Magnimar for everyone's good. Her Arcane Bond is with a ranseur that's a family heirloom that's been in their attic for generations, but it's actually a copy (made by her family from vague records long after the fall of Thassilon) of Alaznist's own ranseur. Plus Karzoug and Alaznist were mortal enemies so if he learns she still has an heir running around... well blood feuds are a thing and it has to end badly for one of them. Should make the fight with the BBEG interesting.

Sandra is still alive and working at the Hagfish. She's pretty comfortable with her life and gets on well with the owner, so she sees no reason to quit. Shara considers the owner, Jargie Quinn, a sort of an unofficial uncle as well, and he's used to having her popping in and out of the place when she was little. Also, Shara was a bit of a social butterfly when she was a kid, so she knows most people who would have been kids in Sandpoint when she was younger, including possibly Ameiko and Nualia. That should make the first book a bit personal and keep her invested. The later stuff she'll be happy to get involved due to the chance to explore Thessalonian ruins, since she's planning to be an archaeologist and explorer.

Spoiler:

Yes its most likely that Alek would be a newcomer, at most a few days before the festival. It is something that he wouldn't miss.
Also reminded me I forgot to put down my resistance in the main stat block.

GM:
Thanks for the feedback. I checked my numbers and found a few skill totals off, but my AC seems ok, as I don't have any armour at the start. And yes, Corso would arrive with the festival.

Liberty's Edge

Okay, going for the Sage Wild blooded Sorcerer, because that way I only use Int for spells, and I'm using Cha for my Psychic pool instead, still going Tattoo Sorcerer, and making her story out as a Sage born to a family Devoted to the discovery of Arcane Knowledge, unfortunately in her search she came apon a powerful entity that has tainted her mind and given her Psychic powers, hence the Abomination Discipline.

I'm working up a oracle/sorcerer with the shadow bloodline and mystery. I'm traveling this weekend but will try to get the basic crunch done and posted asap.

I've actually started writing something up, which involved him explaining Dtang Ma, his travel there, and incredibly distant and complicated political situations, but I scrapped it, because I wasn't feeling very happy with what came out. I think I'll still stick with the new trait, though!

I'll get onto it, and see if I can make it better, and pop in a character description while I'm there. And think of more 'Ancient Wisdom' he may or may not occasionally make up on the spot, just to keep the humours up.

I need to finish up the character's backstory, but Uriel is (mechanically) finished except for finishing up with gear. Short version of his backstory is he was born into a cult of Ragathiel in Magnimar and was raised to believe he was the son of the Empyreal Lord. Whether that's true is anyone's guess (including his own) but his heritage and holy birthmark suggest that at the very least he's been gifted with divine favor from the time he was born. He has had divine visions on occasion since his birth and many have directed his training, but in recent months he felt grave portents of doom in his dreams. Once he heard of the Swallowtail Festival he realized Sandpoint was the city in his dreams and left Magnimar to attempt to defend the town from whatever evil was descending upon it.

Whether or not he may actually be the direct child of an Empyreal Lord is something to be decided later, but I would certainly like to explore it in either case. I think Uriel harbors some doubts about it but ultimately believes it; if he's proven correct, I may reflect that by taking options that strengthen some of his divine ties and his angelic heritage.

Mechanically, Uriel is built to intimidate opponents and be a counter to enemy magic-users. His inquisitor archetype makes it difficult to harm him with spells and makes him better at taking them down, and he'll get better at it when he picks up Disruptive and Spellbreaker later on. In addition, he'll be taking Pin Down/Stand Still to keep spellcasters from fleeing to cast. He'll also be taking the feat tree to get Angelic Wings, so he'll have natural flight.

Maybe too late to dot, I hope not. I have always wanted to play a throwing weapons guy, and I have plenty of stories fitting RotR. If I can put it together before deadline, I'll post the alias here.

@ Loup Blanc

The two skills that have BG are the background skills, and the other add up to 7. Ranger gets 6+int.

Background has been updated. My copy/paste failed previously :(

GM Loup Blanc:
That would be the Unscathed trait. It raises energy resistances by 2.

Also, regarding the Variant Tiefling Ability in place of the spell-like ability, I believe I have found something flavorful for a fire kineticist. It is the following (number 26 I believe):

Your body produces intense, searing heat. Any creature that grapples you takes 1d4 points of fire damage per round.

I am still considering it, but it does seem appropriate and not quite overpowered. Not to mention it almost looks like an extension of the fire kineticist's defense talent. Still, I do have a question about it.

Is it always on? Or is it a sort of at will thing, so it can be turned on and off? Because if it is always on, that would make for some darn uncomfortable handshakes and hugs...

GM Loup Blanc... I am going to Gamex this weekend... we leave early in the morning and not sure when/if I'll be able to check in before Monday night... If I can find time to update my character to 1st lvl, I will do so by then, otherwise it will have to wait til probably Tuesday... I hope I make the deadline, whatever that might be!

Since they use the same progression and are both precision damage, I'm going to rule that they don't stack, so if you got a critical hit while flanking at 1st level, you'd deal 1d6 extra damage, not 2d6. You would still benefit from Deadly Strikes increasing with higher critical multipliers, and you'd be able to activate either of them as your choice if applicable.

Deadly Strike's damage moves at half the progression of Sneak Attack. But if they don't stack then I will just use the highest one that applies. Shouldn't be too hard to keep track.

Never mind. Went with Stalker/Ranger (Freebooter). This is what I have so far.

Liberty's Edge

Okay, everything statwize is finished, now I'm gonna be working in the background by the end of today, a strange set of circumstances....

Chillblame here. Here is my offering. Myst Eye, Mysty to friends is a sorcerer rogue, on a path to healing or destruction.
Her quote
