Looking for 1 (or perhaps 2 if we get a really good candidate) to fill a spot in a pre-existing Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign.
There are 3 current players, a human deformed wizard, a half-orc cleric of Gorum, and a human paladin of Iomedae. Obviously our need is rogue-type or high skill set type, but will consider most anyone who fits the group, need level 1 (or possibly level 2) character.
Character Creation Guidelines
1) 20 pt buy. No pre-modified less than 8 or more than 18, m'k?
2) Roll Starting wealth per PRD by class, but no more than 150GP regardless of role. You likely start poor and humble; that'll change over time...you'll be poor, humble, and dead!
3) Only stuff from CRB, APG, Ultimate Combat, Ult Magic and Ultimate Equipment. No sourcebooks or 3rd party stuff please.
6) Traits: 2 normal, the need for a campaign trait has passed.
7) Really need to read and understand the CotCT Player's Guide. This sourcebook has info on perception of races, classes, and themes of life in Old Korvosa. If you choose a Shoanti, prepare for a tough road etc. The book is free download PDF. Just do it!
8) Backstory needs to give why you're in Korvosa and how you might be in the service of the Queen or her Guard in an irregular capacity.
We are looking for players who can post once per day (or more) including weekends. The link for the current campaign is here if you want read up and follow along. Ideally we'd find someone this weekend, so I'll take submissions up until Sunday night (11/3) around 10PM CST US time. If we don't have the right player by then, we will keep open longer. If we find our true-love sooner, we may close early.
Feel free to PM with questions, or just ask here, since someone else has the same question.

Lazlo Verrgaio |

This character is pretty much ready, but I would rather keep the campaign trait if possible since it heavily ties into his back-story.
If it comes down to you not wanting this rogue because he can't disable magic traps(knife master/scout archetypes), please tell me so and I'll come up with another character that can.

DM Variel |

Reading through the player's handout I saw the feat for a ranger to get a hippogriff. That works perfectly for my urban ranger already. Is there going to be any problems with that and if I have my character attend the sable company for training? Also wondering if rules from ultimate campaign were being used as there is a trait Beast Bond I was looking at along with Reckless. If not that is fine as the character does not need them but liked the crunch of them.
Once I know if that is a valid option for you then I will get the character up tonight/tomorrow with the background fleshed out.

DM DoctorEvil |

A rogue, a bard, or an urban ranger all fit the "type" we are looking for here. Something completely different that grabs me may get a spot as well...
Chavek - The Knife Master is okay. if the group runs into magical traps, they'll have to figure out a way around them. Normal traps, opening locks, a good stealth is what they lack. You may refine your backstory with some of the actual details of Korvosa using the player's guide, but the rest seems acceptable.
DM Variel - I can see the Sable company tie in - he's been tasked to special duty, but we may have to leave the hippogriff out of it, at least until we are at higher levels. Also, the Sable Company is not part of the Korvosan Guard (as i'm sure you saw when you read the Player Guide) so there may be some "inter-service" rivalry issues. I am not using traits form Ultimate Campaign at this point, sorry.
Gloin - an Inquisitor? just trying to piece it together from the alias. level 2? The background story must also be missing a bit?

Goma Gashi |

I'd like to submit for consideration Oscar Boggs, Halfling bard. Let me know if there are any changes you'd like made.
*edit* Oscar is in service to the Guard in an irregular capacity as an informant (although he is desperate to get out of that sticky situation). If the Guard needs someone for a special task they might consider Oscar for the job.

DM Variel |

Thanks for letting me know that the sable company tie in works for you. Based on feats the soonest I could get the Hippogryph would be 5 level anyways. Too bad about the two traits not working out but it doesn't break the character at all so no big loss, just a couple of points for each skill.
I will get the background up later with the character crunch as well. I will post it at level 1 with a spoiler for level 2 updates.
How are hp generated for second level?

Lazlo Verrgaio |

I've added details of Korvosa into the back-story, but I saw no mention of a military force that protects Korvosa's borders besides Sable Company, I am considering having the two characters who discuss Chavek to be part of Sable Company, which would make Chavek ex-Sable Company, what do you think GM?

DM DoctorEvil |

Second level hp can be PFS style (1/2 HD +1) or rolled, but you must take the roll if you choose it (not greater of). If you roll a 1 you may re-roll but subtract one from the result...sounds more complicated than it is.
Chavek - the main military force in Korvosa, which acts as both police and army is the Korvosan Guard. They answer to the city first, the royal family second, and the church of Abadar third. Being Guard or ex-Guard makes a lot of sense. The Sable Marines are an elite hippogriff riding unit that protects Castle Korvosa foremost, they answer to the Seneschal of the Castle (who allows the royal family to live there at his will). The Sable Company often liases (is that a word?) with the Korvosan Guard on military operations, but doesn't have to per se.
Oscar - good build, and the backstory is fun and fraught with ways to make an evil GM smile and laugh...your application is accepted and you'll be in consideration.

Always wanted to do CoTCT.
I have an Inquisitor that I created for CoTCT which never got picked. I would like to change the back story on him (He was originally designed with CoTCT campaign traits in mind), and swap one of the skills (Craft: Weapon was originally part of his back story, one I hope to change), but other than that he's pretty much ready to go.

I am working on the background now to incorporate the traits but basically my father is a driver for a company and that is where Horgus learned how to handle animals. Riding and working with his father as he was driving his team around the city and outside of it.

Horgus N Gwerm |

wealth 5d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4, 6, 4) = 22*10 (max at 150 but that extra 70 would be awesome though ;p)
The first of which was his father and the lessons imparted to him by the wise man. I say wise now, but at the time I did not understand truly how wise he was. I don't think any young man or child does until they are on their own and forging their own path in life. Be that as it may others may not have found him wise as he was by their standards a simple driver for the numerous warehouses on the docks. not that he could claim any true allegiance to a single merchant or any merchant claim his allegiance as the economy of Korvosa limited such affinity. By not having a guild to manage the intricacies of wages and rights it was a matter of personal pride and hard work that determined who had a job that day hauling whatever was needed. Certainly there were some specific people that my father worked for on a regular basis but he was not an permanent employee of theirs. Why does this have a bearing on me. Simply put I rode with him and helped him when not required at home to help mother. While riding with him I learned many things, the value of hard work, the pride in doing a good job, patriotism, and how to handle an animal. This last was very important as some trips would take him outside of the city proper. It was then that I would help my father the most as he would take a rest and let me drive the wagon when I was older. Once he had a rest it would be my turn to relax. Indeed I owe much to my father for these life lessons that he imparted to me.
The second occasion that affected my life happened just outside of the city to the east. I was with my father on another one of his business trips. It was frequently easier to go outside of the city than pass through the middle depending on what the merchandise was and the location of the destination, but on this day we were headed to a small building 2 miles out of town. I remember it was my father's turn at the reigns for I was laying down in the back amongst some crates that we had just loaded. I was looking up at the sky when I noticed far above me the swift passage of a member of the Sable Company on his hippogriff. I recall thinking, as most kids do in Korvosa, that I would do anything to join that elite group. As luck, or unluck may be a better way to say it, would have it I was due to meet the hippogriff and its rider in the next few moments. As I said, my father was driving when I felt him slow down, I peeked my eyes up in time to see 3 men on horses in the middle of the road. The temerity of them was astounding as they all had crossbows pointing at my father. One of them ordered my father to give them the cargo and he would be fine. Trying to protect me he started to indicated that I was to remain still. One of the highwaymen thought he was going for a weapon and fired. The crossbow bolt slammed into my father. I could hear the bolt hit a rib and it was the only thing that kept my father from dying instantly. Suddenly the hippogriff and rider I saw earlier charged from the skies skewering one on a lance. They landed in front of the two remaining highwaymen who scattered before him. Drawing a bow he quickly shot as they fled dropping both of them in a matter of 20 seconds. Quickly he dismounted and approached the wagon. Turning to me he checked on the status of me and my father. Seeing that my father was gravely injured he started to bandage his wounds. While I tried to help I knew that I would just get in his way so let him be as he did what he could to help my dad. I turned my attention to the fantastic beast before me. Approaching slowly as ?I did not want to startle it I was able to get within arms reach of the hippogriff. Reaching a hand out and looking it in the eye I finally was able to touch the object of my admiration. That act must have been a surprise to my father's rescuer as when he turned around he was about to give a sharp order the hippogriff to heel. Instead at the sight of me petting his mount, his face gave a peculiar look. That look I was told later was surprise that the hippogriff had not rent me limb from limb at my approach without getting permission from the Sable Company Marine. It was that single touch that gave me direction in my life for the marine told me to come to the Endrin Military Academy and present myself for inspection. After those few words he told me that he was able to save my father from death but that I was to being him straight home for him to recover.
A couple months passed were I was taking over for my father as he healed. Once he was back to his former health The third of me life altering events happened. I presented my self to the Endrin Military Academy were I was tested to see my aptitude and ability. It was seen that I was a fit candidate and was enlisted. Since then I have been training in the art of aerial combat specializing in archery. Upon graduation I will fulfill my dream and join the ranks of the Sable Company Marines to protect the city and follow the orders of my superiors.
I left the ending more vague as to allow flexibility as to when I would get a hippogriff. Also I have no problem with the hierarchy that I would need to follow as being a member of the Sable Company Marines first and then others second. I do hope that there won't be too much of a problem as the Sable Company does interact and aid others as well. If there was a direct order from a higher ranking member of the Sable Company ordering a specific course of action contrary to the party's direction would I ask you for your advice and work with you to make it work.
Thanks for the consideration.

Lazlo Verrgaio |

This is Wolfgang Rolf aka Chavek, as you can see I've replaced Chavek with Lazlo. My new character is pretty much complete, can't say I am confident in him getting picked, as he's not exactly the most jovial person in the room and I have had characters rejected who were much nicer than he is for the very reason I just mentioned, but I can say that I am more content with him than I was with Chavek, so whether he gets picked or not I am happy with the character and will try to get him into other games if he doesn't get into this one.
I just want to put something out there, just because Lazlo isn't that friendly doesn't mean that he won't be willing to work with a party, especially since the aim of the party is to more or less help the city of Korvosa which is what he's hoping to do anyway.
As for the crunch, Lazlo will pretty much stay a rogue from the beginning of the game till the very end of it, he will mostly use his bow at the first level, this will change drastically once he levels up and picks up weapon finesse via rogue talents. As he continues leveling up he will pick up feats that relate to two-weapon fighting, disarming and feinting, so you can see that in battle he will be very much a melee character but thanks to his decent dexterity he will be able to fire off a ranged attack or two, if he couldn't get close enough to an enemy.
Outside of battle Lazlo is pretty much what you've asked for, he can take care of traps, has decent stealth, perception and a lot more.
Last but not least I wish everyone good luck and would like to apologize to the gm who read my first character, gave me pointers on him, but I ended up going with a totally different character instead.
Starting Wealth: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 3) = 13 * 10 = 130 gp

![]() |

Marnos is no slouch with a bow, and he can close with a falcata. he has climb and excellent perception, can jimmy locks and disarm traps (if necessary), track an opponent. He gets Monster Lore, Bane and judgements from being an Inquisitor. He gets access to tactical feats too, as well as spells (backup healer if necessary, otherwise divine utility). All round a pretty versatile character, able to go in almost any direction.

Desidera Tahn |
Class: Monk(Sensei), Traits: Civilized, Elven Reflexes
I suspect Desi will be party support in a more active and immediate sense, rather than hanging back with the spellcasters. Her aid may be less.. precise than a rogue, but her wealth of knowledge should make any situation more manageable.
This of course blossomed into a love of knowledge, and encouragement from her father after a couple of remarks during their evening discussions led to an upper hand in his negotiations. She found that she enjoyed spending time with the sages more than the library, as different company was something else that was encouraged. For many of the sages, their daily routines involved a lot of exercise for her, especially once they accepted her as an apprentice. Cooking, cleaning, hauling, and errands were often accompanied by stories or lectures, and the end of the day often brought tests of her knowledge. The sages of Irori were often more creative in their tasks, and she enjoyed herself greatly.
Now, in Korvosa, the South Shore enclave was a different place, and the city itself held many surprises, she was learning. What she had been learned was apparently enough to find herself attached to one of the sages in the royal palace (a rather stiff Elven matron by the name of Lhoril), and she found herself thankful of the etiquette that had been instilled in her by aiding her father in his work. The social unrest that had been growing made travel an uncertain thing, so much to her surprise (and stress), she has been staying in the sage's quarters of the palace. All in all, it is something that she was adapting to, though the civil unrest was certainly a new thing that was testing her ability to keep calm.

DM DoctorEvil |

I am closing the thread to new applicants now. I have asked the 3 players to review and vote on their favorites. I have my own in mind, if I don't hear from them by tonight.
I suspect around midnight US Central time I'll have a decision (or two). Sorry for the suspense.
I'll be reviewing in more details and potentially asking questions between now and then.

DM DoctorEvil |

8) Backstory needs to give why you're in Korvosa and how you might be in the service of the Queen or her Guard in an irregular capacity.
You may want to think about this part of the creation process, especially the bolded part as this will be your intro to the game in progress.
Many of you have not filled in this part.

Dhan Semloh |

Oops..ok here is my answer to that question..will add to character sheet background as well.
Well I was brought in to assist with the finding of certain missing items, which I believe have now been found. My background and skills are of the kind the crown can use in many different ways. As long as the money is good, and I am not crossing the 'wrong' people, I am willing to find anything people have lost, and having the crown owe you one, well that cannot hurt!

Kyva |

Oh, I completely misunderstood question 8, and presumed that would be something that came about over the course of play; in so much as the Queensguard is concerned.
I'll regrettably have to withdraw my application, then, as I won't have the time this afternoon to rework Kyva's background to set that series of events into motion. My apologies for the misunderstanding.

DM DoctorEvil |

By popular vote, I'd like to ask Lazlo and Marnos to join us in the Discussion tab for our game here.
The rest: Thanks for your submissions, I am considering running another game soon (probably not CotCT) so please re-apply if you like. There were several good choices, but in the end, I went with the will of my players.

DM DoctorEvil |

We are back to looking for two more characters for this long-running Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign. The party currently consists of a Kalvin (paladin of Iomedae), Crux (a deformed, but strangely charismatic wizard), and Marnos (an inquistor of Erastil). They are all level 3, so should be any new applicants. Likely looking for 2 candidates to fill the party to 5 players.
The adventurers are in the last part of the first volume of CotCT, and will soon be moving on to the second book: 7 Days to the Grave.
You can find the rules for character creation above as well as the need to fill in some backstory, since these characters are joining a well-established campaign. Average party wealth is right about 1800gp so you can use that to equip your starting character.
For your edification and reading pleasure, the campaign thread is linked here.
Posting for this game has been slow as a few of the players have slowly whittled away. Hopefully with a new infusion of talent, we can pick up the pace and the interest level for all involved. Please PM me with questions or post them here.

Lamm noticed Tina's skills with healing and mixing alchemy items and so made an 'investment' and had her taught some alchemy skills. In order to keep Tina under control, he forced her to take Shiver in order to addict her and tightly controled her doses, denying her the drugs and making her suffer withdrawl if her output wasn't high enough. Tina did eventually learn to unlock her chains and absconded with a small dose of Shiver so she could get away and was aided by a Sarenae temple to kick her habit in return for her help as a healer. Now free of her slavery and addiction, she works with the temple to provide care for those unable to go to the Abadar temple.

Hi, this is the character I would like to present Lidia Olhandar, a Magus 2/Rogue 1 elf woman. The idea is profiting the high Int and the Rogue class skills to make her competent as a skillmonk, plus using the sinergies between both classes to make her competent at combat. I wanted to make her some kind of group face with high Charisma, but in the end I needed to lower her Charisma. I will keep focusing on Diplomacy though so eventually it will work.
I'm still building up the background, but I have some nice ideas on how to make her a defender of the old king.
Let me know if you have some cool ideas for the build or if you were thinking in other kind of character.

Dal Selpher |

Alright, I'd like to submit Travigan Frost for your consideration. A gruff, temperamental blacksmith from Korvosa, Travigan's older than most typical adventurers but still full of vim and vigor while running out of patience toward the escalating troubles throughout the city.
To sum him up, he's a barbarian/sorcerer angling for the dragon disciple prestige class down the line, so he'd function best as another frontline beater beside Kalvin (and, if selected, I think it might be neat for Kalvin's dad, another blacksmith, and Travigan to maybe have known one another? just a thought).
I'd also like to play up Travigan's sorcerous abilities as totally unexpected and more than a little alarming for the man, almost like a second puberty of sorts. While I can easily see him becoming very protective of the other party members, I think there could be some fun juxtaposition to have Crux become something of a mentor to help guide him through the development and maturation of his magical abilities.
Crunch-wise, he's been built to the standards above with 1,800 gps to start with. I generally prefer to roll for my hps, which I will eagerly do if you think Travigan would be a good and fun fit with your group.
Regardless, thanks for your consideration DoctorEvil! =)

Gavmania |

Hi, I run Marnos, the inquisitor in this game.
To explain our set-up: Marnos is a switch-hitter, emphasising his bow; Crux provides battlefield control and Kalvin is our front liner. Another front liner and divine support would be ideal, but if necessary I can change roles.
Skills wise, I have track and disable device (as well as excellent perception), Kalvin provides the face and Crux the knowledge skills.
Any character that can fit into that lot is welcome.

bigrig107 |

Hey, DoctorEvil, how do you feel about Asmodeus, Cheliax, and the Hellknights?
I was thinking a cleric (possibly crusader) sent to bring order to the streets of Korvosa. Not sure how the Hellknights and Korvosa work together, but he'd definitely fill that frontliner aspect.
He'd be lawful neutral, of course. Can't have that paladin smiting me!

Balacertar |

I submit here Lilia Longblade, a Ranger 3. She is a devoted protector of Korvosa who planned to be a Sky Stalker, plan that has been screwed up by the recent events in the city.
I made her a woman to add some spice to the group, and a Iomedae follower to create some strong ties with Kalvin, the other melee in the party. As a guard and enemies of Korvosa hunter I am sure she will have no problems to work with Marnos. I have more difficulties to find links with Crux, but Lilia is quite openminded to all forms of life!
In addition to some extra skills to the group, she can adds extra damage and tactical control with her focus towards reach fighting. I am unsure how convenient is to built up towards Sky Stalker flying combat for the campaign, but I envision to play her as a failed Sky Stalker trainee, with that failure deeply stabbed into her soul. She definitely looks to redeem her honour and her family honour by saving the Queen.
