Ok, I'd like each of you to write an introductory post in the Gameplay. This should expound how long each of you have been in Riddleport, what you are doing there, what you think of the Blot (more info below), and how you will come to be at the "Beat the Devil and Take His Gold" gambling tournament at the Gold Goblin Gaming Hall on the morrow.
The Blot - Over the past few weeks, a mysterious dark spot has appeared in the skies over Riddleport, it is a sort of diffuse cloud. The Cyphermages have been studying it, priests and seers have predictied it's a dire omen, and for a while it was the talk of the town. Recently however, it has sort of faded into the background as an local phenomenon. Crowds of outsiders, sages, scholars, sightseers, have crowded into town to see it, most making easy marks for the pirates and scoundrels that make this town their home. There have been stories of other interesting natural phenomenon, like a plague of frogs, and water running uphill. But these are dismissed as superstition and wives tales. Life in Riddleport goes on, if a little enriched by the tourist traffic.
Gaming Tournament - The Gold Goblin is a down-on-its-luck establishmnet, but recent handbills and ads have shown up across town advertising the "Beat the Devil and Take His Gold" tournament to start tomorrow. For a variety of reasons these ads have caught your eye, and you plan to show up tomorrow at the appointed time to see what it's all about. You will not yet be introduced to the Gold Goblin, so don't imagine yourselves working, staying, living there...not yet at least.
Ok, now it's up to you to place yourself in the setting. We'll open with the morning at the gaming hall when you're done.
If you have questions or need more info, let me know.

Hey Vris, can you cut and paste that to Gameplay?
Here is link to nice picture of The Blot from AP interior artwork.

Hey Vris, can you cut and paste that to Gameplay?
Whoops! It's 2am here and I wasn't paying attention to which thread I was posting in. Cut and pasted the intro into gameplay Doc.
G'night folks.
Trig Glittergold |
Wow Vris, talk about setting a high bar! I'll have to work on this, I'll have something up by this evening.
Bú nìng yīng huā jié |
Oof, the bar is set pretty high...
Going to take me a bit to have mine ready.
Of course, Trig, you might not have realized this, but Bú's Patron is Enchantment, she'll be picking up Unnatural Lust next level.
You know, just in case you are still having trouble reeling in that dwarf...
edit: I'm going to chalk up the slight difference between Vris' view of what Bú is doing at the Goblin to a lingering difficulty in translation. Yes Bú still speaks Elven, but some of the tenses probably get organized differently among the Jinin Elves from the Avistani Elves. Kind of like the difficulties talking between Brooklyn & L.A...
Vris Fontessa |
Um, yeah... sorry if I overdid my first post. I should learn that if I have insomnia if right place to be is not sitting in front of computer. 'Wall of text' wasn't the right approach.
If I screwed up what Bu is doing at the Gold Goblin, my apologies - the 'lost in translation' solution works fine, especially as Vris technically speaks elven, but probably has a terrible accent thanks to being raised exclusively among Varisians. She wouldn't know a Jinin or an Avistani elf apart by their accent or dialect.
So whatever the witch's connection with the gaming hall, Vris somehow thinks that it's something else entirely.
DM DoctorEvil |
It wasn't over kill to me at all Vris, I liked it.
3 are checked in, still waiting on the others. It may be a bit before Saphren can get posted if he's in RL gaming con. If he's last, we may start w/o him....
Fair warning, I will be in the car a fair portion of the day tomorrow and may not be able to post much over the holiday weekend in US. I'm sure I'll squeeze a little in, but perhaps just a little slower than usual.
Reva Meirani |
Is cool, I expect things to get cracking in earnest after the long weekend. And yeah, totally not overkill! Sets a high bar for the rest of us. :D
Vris Fontessa |
@Bu ning ying tong and I can't pronounce any of it, sorry - I note that you have named your weasel familiar 'The Jill'. By any chance are you a ferret wrangler, as usually only they know the proper name for a female Mustela? I myself am the big-shiny-plaything-that-gives-us-food-and-squeaks-when-we-bite of two ferrets - one jill and one hob.
Bú nìng yīng huā jié |
It has been almost two decades since I have been a Ferret Wrangler, but yes, yes I am. I hope to be one again, but present living situation does not permit.
& Bu/Boo/Blossom all work fine, you need not try the entire string.
Saphren |
Hi all. I am back from the con. I played nine 5 hour slots of PFS and averaged maybe 5 hours of sleep a night for four nights. I'll be doing my best to catch up on everything and post tomorrow. Its good to be back home, and back with the game. :)
DM DoctorEvil |
Normally if they are negative they are dead. For important "named" NPC's there will be an exception. If you want to stabilize and revive someone to interrogate (even if just normal thug) i'll allow that, but even with channel energy etc I won't bring an army of negative HP bad guys back to life to annoy you again--it just doesn't seem in the spirit of the rule. (if they are merely wounded that's another matter...)
Also, watching my LG pc's going around coup-de-gracing everyone they fight is a little disgusting and nearly unbelievable.
To me the extra chances at life are part of the "specialness" of PC's and not perhaps an ability granted to common monsters or men.
Vris Fontessa |
I don't believe that you're referring to either of the two other campaigns of yours I'm in Doc - no-one in the RotRL A has coup-de-grace on anyone, and Rodan in CotCT did it once to make sure a half-orc thug wasn't going to get back up thanks to orc ferocity. So which group of yours is running around slitting throats all of the time? :)
DM DoctorEvil |
no, they specifically aren't because I'm not making them. If I said the defeated enemies were not "dead" but only "wounded" it'd be a different dynamic. I didn't mean to infer some were doing it, but I have seen it done in RL tables because the GM is inflexible on that issue.
trust me hacking up unconscious corpses gets old after a while...(hmm, that didn't come out quite right...)
Vris Fontessa |
@DM Doc Evil - would casting true strike on Saphren eliminate his miss chance for being blinded?
Saphren |
Actually, as best as I understand it, it does. Blindness cause a 50% miss chance due to total concealment. True Strike removes the miss chance due to concealment. Its a great spell to use on an invisible opponent. One must still pinpoint(know what square he is in) the opponent though.
DM DoctorEvil |
Actually, now that I read it again, I agree with Saphren I didn't read the last sentence closely enough. If the spell removes any concealment then you don;t need the percentile roll. Still however, the spell's range is "personal" which means only the caster can use it. It can't be touched to any ally.
DM DoctorEvil |
Not sure if any of you are PFS players, but if so you should be aware of this event which is a huge effort to build interest in PbP PFS. I am running a game (Silent Tide 00-01) and playing in a few others. Many tiers and scenarios are represented, but you must join up at Warhorn site to officially sign up. Here is the link for the events.
Note, they all won;t be on the same day via PbP format, but will kick off at about the same time. Go and sign up for your favorite game or DM.
Trig Glittergold |
Hmm, all my current PFS characters are in the middle of PBP scenarios at the moment. I guess I could start a new one.
Bú nìng yīng huā jié |
I have yet to make a PFS character, for all that I have a PFS membership, in either PbP or tabletop.
One of these days I intend to, particularly as I technically have a 'play credit' for RotRL AE that I could apply to one.

Raid on the Goblin - Post Combat Summary
Blossom - no damage, no resources used, no longer blind
Magnus - no damage, no resources used
Reva - no damage, Divine Favor cast, Judgement bonus used
Trig - no damage; Color spray cast, 1 tremor used
Saphren - no damage, no longer blind
Vris - no damage, Command cast; 3 bits of luck used (or was it two?)
If you see something I missed, let me know.
DM DoctorEvil |
Bu - I will track it, I am just posting so you know where you stand relative to leveling.
Twigs - there was one dodgy moment with Vris, but I messed up something and it turned into a miss. Bu is correct though, they were all trying to do non-lethal damage and get away. Next time, maybe a more determined force...

Raid on the Goblin - Post Combat Summary
Vris - no damage, Command cast; 3 bits of luck used (or was it two?)
If you see something I missed, let me know.
I think it ended up being only two uses of bit of luck - the first time she went to use it during the combat was retconned due to changing circumstances, so she never got to deliver the touch.
Remarkable that none of us were injured, despite over half of the party being blinded.
By the way, Vris would have used her bless spell early in the fight, except for everyone being too widely dispersed around the gaming hall to benefit from it, at least not without having to move and provoking more AoO's from the thugs. As it turns out we didn't need it.
DM DoctorEvil |
Blossom entertains the private room VIP's distracting them from gaming and making a few new and influential friends in the process. On two different occasions she had to get some help from Reva, who is policing the private rooms, when an amorous guest got a little too into the show, but all in all her hair and her "skills" have the rooms captivated.
Blossom - Earn gp equal to Perform check roll in tips.
I was more thinking about this...
Vris Fontessa |
If we sold every item taken from the would-be robbers at the standard 50% value, including the bracers of armor +1 and the wand of shocking grasp (with 9 charges), then added in the 50gp in coins, the total would be 792 gold and 5 silver pieces.
Split six ways that is 132 gold and 8 copper pieces each. Seems a shame to sell the bracers and the wand though... the bracers in particular are a nice thing for a first level arcane caster to get ahold of this early in a game. However even at 50% value they're worth 500 gold alone.
If the 'finely crafted leather armor' is masterwork armor, then Vris will take that as part of her share at 50% of value in lieu of coin, which comes to 80gp. So her share then becomes the MW leather armor, 52 gold and 8 copper.
Saphren |
Yes, I agree that it would be a shame to sell the magic items - more so the wand than the bracers. Bracers are somewhat overrated imho and it will certainly be good to sell them at some point.
IC Saphren would want his cut. However he can be extremely reasonable for a larger green fellow so if someone has a reasonable proposal he would certainly listen. He too could use masterwork leather armor as armor check penalties impact his skill set a lot.
