That's too much "personal". Ick. Too much. Don't care for it at all.

He waves to the folks on the balcony and starts making his way carefully to it with the body. Arriving, he gently places the body on the floor, as if he is afraid it will explode.
"Maybe its someone else's creation. Maybe we should try and figure out what it is?" he says by way of explanation, wiping his face off with a clean hanky. "If nothing else, maybe there's something useful on it."

He pauses a moment, scratching his head. Standing over his fallen foe, something out of the heat of the forge of his subconscious finally bubbles to the surface of his conciousness.

Ascaria hurries to heal himself, and Mort, and any others of any lingering injury. Likely, at first, he’s very quiet as he plies the wand of curing on himself to keep up with what he absorbs from Mort over the next few moments. Then he catches up, and heals himself very nearly to full.

When the healing is over, he'll spy the evil one and the chamber in as much as he can see, with Detect Magic. (Spellcraft on any items found = 22 (taking 10))

On reporting whatever he finds, he adds, "Well this guy is still alive. Do we turn him over to the authorities? He might buy his way out if we do..." Ascaria voices a corruption concern, though he doesn't quite go so far as to suggest the alternative.

"I'm worried about who hired him too. We could try and question him, but I'm afraid we can't trust anything he says, or thinks at us. If he can read minds, he can see what we want him to say, and he'll just say it. I dunno." he says unhappily. He thought the dopplegangers were bad. They just copied the outsides of people!

Mort wrote:
"I'd never forget Dandi!! Or Rae!"

Solrisa looks confused for a moment, her head aswim with victory but then remembers that both Rae and Dandi exist and smiles and cheers ever more.

"Good idea, Mort!! This victory is for Rae!! WooWoo!! And for Dandi!!! LOVE. YOU. BOTH!!!' Solrisa seems to think it was a great idea to dedicate this victory to those two. It just seems fitting and right.

She will slowly climb down...and....

Solrisa seems quite happy about that.

She wipes away a bit of gore from her face, smiling down at her rent, burnt, and be-blooded armor.

"Oh, I'm going to need to shine shine this tonight! But we've done well, I think. We stopped the bad guys who wanted to hurt us," Solrisa smiles, happy.

With the maiden's powerful pronouncement, Zyrxog dies, mercifully unaware of the final flay. Almost in the same instant, the pool below begins to froth. Moments later, several largish think ping pong ball size, black tadpoles emerge from the waters, flopping on the floor of the cathedral. They begin to slowly propel themselves in various directions, moving less than 2' a round.

No initiative necessary.

Knowledge(Dungeoneering) DC 26:

These strange proto lifeforms are mind flayer tadpoles. They are harmless in their current form, but can eventually be introduced to a sapient host, which is eventually subsumed into a new mind flayer. It takes these tadpoles roughly 10 years to gestate. Hard to tell how old these fledgling poles are...

Tynan pulls out the rope of climbing, willing it to tie one end of itself to the balcony, and tosses the rest over the side.

"This should speed up getting to the floor below." Tynan looks over at Mort, gestures at him and gives a grin. "Except for Scuttles over there. I'm sure he'll be down the wall before we even get started!"

"OH BOY!! STAMPIES!!!" Solrisa squees high and loud at the sights of the wrigglers as she runs over to stamp on as many as she can as quickly as she can.

"I bet I get more than you, Eri!" Sol challenges, finding joy in stomping out the black worms. She stomps and stamps, her metal clad feet ringing in the chamber. "My sister and I used to play stampies...but only with my doll collection. Rae would try to beat me in stamping all my dolls to bits, but I'd do so much better than her when she challenged me! I was so good at stampies that Mum said she wouldn't buy me any more dolls! That's when I started to play more with rocks, I think. You can't stampie rocks and they don't break. Except with the right tools."

"Ascaria? How did these usually green worms turn black?" Solrisa asks during a break in her stamping, her breath rising heavily with the effort.

We could preserve one in a bottle to show someone, but I'm not sure who we'd show, and I don't think I want to carry such a thing out of here."

Ascaria:

First, from the balcony, you easily are reminded of the scrying pool's magical aura, before turning to Zyrxog's fallen form. There are several warm glowy items.

Necklace- Unknown, though a Fireball did emanate from one of its marbles tossed at the party recently.

Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds(2)

Boots of Elvenkind

Cloak of Resistance +2

Ring- Unknown

You also come across a small chest key.

The room itself is radiating magic from the large pillar at the back of the room, over the pools. With your keen insight into various schools of magic, you come to realize that an evil evocation is at play here. Zyrxog has managed to Unhallow the pillar. The spell effect attached to this un-sacred ground is a Fire Resistance.

Entering the cathedral, and moving closer to the pools from which arise the tadpole creatures, a dread feeling falls upon you, as if you are unwanted here. As if the very walls themselves would come together to crush you where you stand, had they not been sworn to obey the principles of matter.

The Great Squishing commences. Several tadpoles are crushed under foot, leaving you to observe the smaller tadpoles still swimming in the pools. There are at least four dozen from what you can count. It's quite difficult, as they criss-cross in zebra-like patterns. The pools appear to be inset into the floor, with a depth of 3'.

A hallway leaves the room to the northwest, likely connecting to the museum room, while an unopened door awaits to the southeast. Oh, and a red metal rod lies on the floor amidst several squished squidkins. Yes, Ascaria, it is unknown to you.

Mortimer scales down the wall and pulls out his homemade quarter staff -- the one with the big knot on the end of it -- and carefully lines up a bunch of tadpoles. He then stands over them and begins striking them one by one with the knot end of the staff, aiming to splat them into various imagined goals against the various distances of the wall about them. He tries to chip one or two onto the balcony.

"We didn't have a chance to, but maybe we should check out the spy pool above behind the balcony -- see what else it might be able to scry. Maybe we can hit it on our way through the Museum Room, then come back here and see what lies beyond that door?" he gestures toward the southeast.

"I found some things. Eri, can you help identify these? A few are beyond my capabilities..."

He shows the following to be ID'd; a necklace, a ring, and the rod from the room downstairs.

He then hands around the items he could identify, "Here's a cloak of the elvenkind, another cloak that helps save you in various ways (cloak of resistance +2), a couple more potions of cure moderate wounds - should I just carry these and use 'em like wand charges? Seems like everyone should have a couple of these already. If not, let me know"

Finally he holds up a small key. "There's a chest around here somewhere and we've got the key to it." he grins.

In the center of this large chamber is a grotesque ebony statue of a vulture-headed humanoid with large feathery wings and razor sharp talons at the end of avian digits. The rest of the room is taken up by large glass Cases I, II, III, each full of dark twisted artifacts, from a shrunken head to a tome chained shut and a number of jars containing the severed parts of numerous creatures.

Case I:

Sitting on the top shelf of this case is the preserved head of a juvenile black dragon whose eyes glow a faint green. This case also contains an odd black metal cage, covered in thorns, with nothing inside.

Resting on a large velvet pillow is an ornate dagger.

Case II:

The top shelf of this case contains four books labeled “Unspeakable Tome". Beneath these is a weathered and tarnished bronze griffon figurine. This case also contains four jars, each containing the preserved remains of something leathery and snake-like Knowledge(Arcana) to learn more. There are six other empty jars behind these.

Case III:

A petrified pseudodragon sits atop this case. Within the case sits a battered greatsword, and a periapt of gold.

Perception DC 30:

For all the intricacies of the glass cases, a thin, spider-like vein of metal runs from each to the center statue. It is likely that the statue will be disturbed if any of the cases are opened. Disable Device applies here...

Assuming we checked for traps, distributed the loot -- etc. -- Mortimer will move from case to case without touching anything.

"Be careful -- everyone. Don't touch or open the cases -- I think there is a security alarm or trap attached to them," he points to the thin vein of metal running through each, then to the ebony statue in the middle of the room to which they lead. "Maybe Tynan can disable that the easy way?"

Looking inside the cases, Mortimer scratches his head. "What a pile of junk! Why would anyone want to keep any of this? And what's with the lack of placards? Even private collections usually include descriptions of the things you're looking at, don't they?"

He tries to mimic the inside voice of the MindFlayer in an effort to give everyone a "personal" tour. It is clear that he is making everything up for the sake of levity.

I'd tell you what they are, but you can clearly see that the label above them prohibits me from doing so, but they are the source of my inspiration for that -- " he says, gesturing again with his "tentacles" towards the Buzzard Hominid. "Oh, yessss!!! If no one destroys it first, this will be my ultimate creation," he says, wringing his fingers in insidious anticipation. "The rest is just the start of the ingredients."

"And here", he says, moving to the third case, "Well here..." he trails off, dropping the MindFlayer act, resuming in his normal voice, albeit a bit subdued and more serious.

"This one just makes me sad for some reason. Is this a puzzle? A treasure room in disguise? This guy was pretty sadistic..." He takes a closer look at the golden periapt. What is it in the shape of?

Ascaria studies the weave of magics on the various items and shares what he learns with the group as he goes…

He gestures to the statue in the middle of the room, ”Don’t touch that, it’s aglow with magics. If I had to guess, I’d say the trap releases that thing from whatever holds it in stasis. Best avoided for now I think…” he mumbles as he turns to the first case.

He points out the dagger, ”This is ranked well (+2), but it’s unholy so it does more damage to good creatures. Not something I think we want to even sell. It’s truly evil.”

”I don’t know how this dragons eyes are glowing as there seems to be no magic about it - just very reflective.” He doffs his hat and moves the light around to watch the shimmer. He seems to get lost in the green of it all for a moment before continuing.

He moves on to the second case. He removes the ‘Unspeakable Tomes’ in four volumes and gives them to Mort to carry. ”These aren’t magical but we should see what’s in them. Might be useful. Oh! What’s this?” He reaches behind the tomes and produces another book, this one entitled, ‘The Art of Peaceful Diplomacy’. ”This is magical indeed though I cannot parse it. Eri, can you look at this for me and ID it?” he hands the book to Eri to determine.

He also hands him the bronze statue. ”I don’t know what this is either, though it is magical.”

He takes out four jars, each containing the preserved remains of something leathery and snake-like. He examines them briefly before handing them to Eri for greater observation. Are the empty jars special in any way? If not, he leaves them behind.

He takes out the periapt of gold with a singular green, oval gemstone, wrapped in a leather cord. ”I don’t know what this is either. Eri, check this out too if you would please.” he hands it to Eri for closer examination.

He pats the pseudodragon on the head. ”Non magical, but pretty.” he mumbles.

Having sorted through the gear, he waits to see what Eri discovers, then piles the bulk of it on Mort’s broad back. ”Let’s check out the last room and get out of here. I’m tired of underground lairs.”

He listens to Mort and Sol discuss their situation and has little to add. ”I agree. And this Loris is likely to be a problem for us even when we leave the city. But let’s get done here, do a little shopping, and see what makes sense to do next.”

He’s ready to move to the next chamber. He still carries the key in his vest-coat, and wonders what sort of chest it might open.

Finally, Tynan is a bit behind us in WBL. I'd like to do an uneven distribution to catch him up a bit. Eri is also a little low, but he might take the Rod of Empower which would push him up. The other items, once identified, might do the same so I'm not committing to anything quite yet, just planning ahead a little. Give it some thought.

Eri is unable to deduce the nature of the magical items currently frustrating Ascaria.

The group moves collectively into the cathedral once more, gaining the door at the back. It opens easily enough to reveal Zyrxog's personal chamber. There lies a bed, with a locked chest at its foot. The key currently in the gnome's possession works easily into the face of the lock.

Unlocking the Chest:

950 copper, 450 silver, 330 gold, 45 platinum
loose gemstones(20)- total value 2000 gold

Also, two bookshelves, full of books which eventually demonstrate a thoroughness of subject matter on Egorian Herself. Four sets of books, Local, Nobility, History, and Religion, all focused on the City of Thorns. This is a very focal Library, which allows study of 1d4 hours to attempt Knowledge Checks untrained. It only applies to Egorian and Her people, but the Circumstance Bonus is +4.

A longish desk is the remaining piece of furniture, upon which rests an open ledger. It is written in Undercommon.

Undercommon:

It's cryptic, but with study, it becomes easy enough to identify names, item descriptions, dates, and amounts exchanged for several of them. Several lines remain blank, perhaps indicating yet-to-occur transactions. Zyrxog appears to seek dangerous items from and for certain citizens of Egorian. Gorgon calves, Talismans of Ultimate Evil, the list goes on and on. It appears to be a thriving exchange.

One line in particular stands out-
The item description: Apostolic Scrolls, relic
The payment: Marked 'received' by Zyrxog's initials
The client name: Loris Raknian
The date: Left blank

And lastly, a letter, written in stern, block handwriting.

"Most Revered Zyrxog,

I humbly request your service. The one who bears this letter will provide you the necessary intelligence. Please let me know if this payment is enough.

Loris Raknian"

Below, a list of names. Yours.
Ascaria
Solrisa
Raella ??
Mortimer
Pillette
Tynan

The handwriting different, similar to the writing in the ledger.

F Half Elf:
HP 135, F19R14W16,Dip+13,Fly+7,HanAnim+8;K(rel)+18, Spllcrft +17,UMD +22

Solrisa reads the note, looking around when she is done.

"Who is Pillette? Why is his name crossed off?" Solrisa asks, trying to figure it out.

"Let's hold on to this letter. We can use magic to find out who Loris is. Ooh. I have an idea."

Eri looks for Loris in the books.

Ascaria, overcome with curiosity at such a powerful magic, opens The Art of Peaceful Diplomacy to the title page and reads aloud.

If he’s not scorched or turned to stone by the effort, he looks through the chest in wonder. ”Wow! Sparkly!”

GM Rat Sass:
Is it 2kgp total for everything in the chest (assumed) or 2kgp just for the loose gems?

Ascaria opens the ledger. ”It’s written in undercommon. It’s a little cryptic, but I think I can make it out with a little study. Definitely something we want to examine.” He goes on to describe the contents a bit, but cautions it’ll take time in a quiet environment not filled with squished worms to fully understand everything. Zyrxog appears to seek dangerous items from and for certain citizens of Egorian. Gorgon calves, Talismans of Ultimate Evil, the list goes on and on. It appears to be a thriving exchange.

”Oh, what’s this?” He holds the book up to the party and points to one line in particular. ”Check that out!” after a moment, he pulls the book back down, ”Oh right, you can’t read. It says…”

The item description: Apostolic Scrolls, relic
The payment: Marked 'received' by Zyrxog's initials
The client name: Loris Raknian
The date: Left blank

”That doesn’t sound good. Not good at all. We should make sure it’s not around here somewhere. Maybe check the study like Mort said to. Then onto the last door that we passed earlier.”

When he gets to the list, he worries at Pillette’s name. ”I hope Pillette is OK.” he mumbles not really believing it.

”So, I think, this Loris wrote the note, and then Zyrxog wrote the list under it.”

GM Rat Sass - did I learn anything about the things in the jars with my 20 Arcana?

GM Rat Sass:
I took another 5 minutes off our ongoing spells…

Solrisa brings her pretty blue light over as the gnome exclaims loudly and correctly. She looks on and agrees.

"Loris Reknian? Who is Loris Reknian?" Solrisa searches her memory for mention of Loris. "Maybe Loris is friends with Pillette?" Solrisa asks, trying to fend off confusion and figure things out. But then she thinks more. "Well, we don't have to worry about it too much longer as we'll be leaving the City soon to go track that bad black dragon...the one with the green worms."

Solrisa keeps watch over the others as they read and sort and search, happy to chat and support those that need it. She will chime in on anything of a religious nature that she sees. It's the only thing she's good at.

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24 Know (Religion)

Eri, should you decide to pursue Loris Raknian in the Library, you'll need to invest 1d4 ⇒ 3 hours to do so. Time that may or may not be afforded to you in the present moment.

Ascaria:

The jars contain the eyestalks of a beholder. The jars themselves are nothing special. The coin and gemstones values were listed separately.

As Ascaria opens the Book, and his eyes rest upon the first word, they glaze over for a moment, as the mind behind gnome eyes contends with understanding. 2 Will Saves, DC 15, Ascaria.

Ascaria:

Briefly, you catch a glimpse of green, trying, and failing, to obscure your sight from reading the first word...

Mortimer freezes, then looks at Ascaria out of the corner of his eye.

... little guy is a little touchy... ... and now no more beer!

Quote:
"Oh, I don't think he's dead, but he might be." he plinks the stone with his finger. "The poor thing is just turned to stone. I think, if we can find a wizard in this city, we can reverse it if we want. Shouldn't be too expensive either!"

Mortimer carefully lifts the stoned pseudodragon out of the case and gingerly tucks it under his arm. He tries to walk, but finds it awkward for some reason. He looks at his hand carrying the Greatsword, then down at the dragon tucked under his arm.

Hrm, maybe I'm carrying too much this way.

He straps the sword to his back, then kneels on one knee to rearrange items in his backpack. He makes a nice soft cozy section for the petrified pseudodragon to rest, and places it there in the pack. With everything neatly stowed, he secures it shut then stands, ready to go.

Solrisa wrote:

Oh?

Mort looks over Sol's shoulder at the list. "You remember -- Pillette was the Halfling we met at Lazares -- she wielded a heavy crossbow. It was bigger than her, almost. I don't know what the crossing out means though... This also means whoever put out this contract did so before Eri and uh..." he flounders, never quite having been able to understand or remember the name "Hourpen", "Ascaria's little brother joined the rest of us."

He looks at Eri, "Well, Zyrxog said you were taken on as a courtesy, so -- you're in it now."

Ascaria wrote:

"'Apostolic Scrolls'? 'Relic'? Hey -- this Zyrxog guy seems like he was a collector -- what with that Museum and all. Do you think the 'scrolls' are actually the 'Unspeakable Tome'? If it was a relic, wouldn't it be in there? Do you think we should take everything in the Museum? Maybe all of that junk it is worth quite a bit to someone."

He watches Ascaria as he opens a book, his eyes becoming as they were under the heady beverage at The Crooked House. He nudges Ascaria, "Hey, are you alright? Is that a difficult language or something?"

Ascaria points to the jars earlier, ”Wow. Those are the eyestalks of a beholder. Beholders are giant eyes, with eyes stuck on top, that float around killing stuff. They’re very good at what they do too. Very good…” he shakes his head as the various myths crowd around inside it.

Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 vs DC 15

Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 vs DC 15
+2 (racial) vs language-dependent spells or those that create glyphs, symbols, or other magical writings.

Ascaria goes very quite as he seems quite engrossed in the text. Just there at the beginning, he wafts his hand in the air as if to cast aside a buzzing fly, though none exist near him at the moment.
