"I don't think I missed any hidden doors, but I'll check."

Tynan searches for hidden trapdoors in several locations throughout the warehouse.

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29 (SE Storage Room)

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 (NE Room, beneath walkway)

"Did you see any other exits from the chamber below, Mort? I'm betting the trap I disarmed earlier drops people down into that beast's lair..."

Mortimer scratches the back of his head pensively.

"Well, the hallway curved off to the East, so that chamber would be below that trap door, I believe. I wouldn't exactly call it a lair, though. Feels more like a prison, I would think. It was hungry," he recalls, shuddering, remembering the horrible massive beak. "It just doesn't belong down there at all, it seems. Anyway, I wouldn't call it lair if I were a Blob with lots of Arms."

"I did not get a chance to look around in the chamber, unfortunately, before the Blob tried to hug me. I did happen to notice the water level in the chamber is the same forty feet of depth as it is in the well, but there was a ceiling above all that about another fifteen feet up. There might be a space up there that leads somewhere."

He peers into his backpack and pulls out some jerky. "Do you think It eats this? he asks everyone, waving his jerky about. "Maybe it will distract It and we can swim by if we have to go back."

Mortimer has to explain in his own way, but I forgot to mention -- feel free to read all of the spoilers between Mort and GMSass. He intends to explain all that he saw.

"Mort? Do I need light for when I go kill the suckermonster? I can sorta see in the dark," Solrisa says. If Mort says that Darkvision would be helpful and if Ascaria/Eri can't/won't cast Light, Solrisa will drink her potion of Darkvision.

When others are ready, Solrisa drinks her potion of Touch of the Sea before drawing her dagger and swimming down to kill the suckermonster.

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

Tynan does a thorough sweep of Sodden Hold Above, finding nothing other than the trapped door's pit, which, upon closer investigation, only extends down fifteen feet, into well-crafted spikes.

Returning to the shaft/well, the party benefits greatly from Ascaria's gift of Water Breathing, as well as his time-honored Blessing. This time, you are all ready for what lies ahead...

As Mortimer and Solrisa cross the doorway, the octopus appears ready to greet your return. Even eager...

Tentacle, M: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 for 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Tentacle, M: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 for 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Tentacle, S: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 for 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

It seems to shy away from grabbing Mortimer, for some reason. Solrisa, on the other hand, is groped by not one, but two tentacles, both of which concentrate on pulling her away from the rest of you.

Grab, no AoO, S: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (19) + 19 = 38
Grab, no AoO, S: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (17) + 19 = 36

It succeeds, handily. Solrisa is swished through the water, now floating nose-to-beak with the large cephalopod.

Tynan: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Ceph: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Yeah, no reason for you to be looking here, but once I found out Ceph went first, I rolled his attacks above the spoiler, not below, so the rolls got screwed. I'm looking at you, Eri, you spoiler reader...

Round 1, Init 13

Tynan eyes the creature warily, then begins swimming in his clumsy way, toward the creature, but at an upward angle toward the surface.

Swim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

(If my recollection of algebra is correct, if Tynan swims 9 feet toward the critter, with a rise of 6 feet above the level they entered at, that should make a swim distance of 15 feet.)

It's gonna take forever to get over there...

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

GM Rolls:

1d20 ⇒ 7

Solrisa closes the distance to the creature against(?) her will, but manages to strike it once. Tynan swims ever closer to the underwater beast. Eri swims effortlessly into the room, concussing the creature with magical harpoons. Hourpen GMPC follows Tynan in struggling to move forward through the waters, breaking to the left.

Swim Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Ascaria tadpoles forward, then brings more magic to bear on all gathered. The potential calamari takes a turn for the worse, as the gnome curses it by the same prayer that boosts all.

Mortimer swims agilely forward, engaging the octopus once again, igniting it in his too-warm embrace.

Attacks of Opportunity abound! One for Tynan, and two for Mortimer.

Tentacle, T, Prayer: 1d20 + 11 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 11 - 1 = 28 for 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 damage, plus grab

Grab, T: 1d20 + 19 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 19 - 1 = 25 Tynan grappled

Once the octopus has firmly grasped the situation, the room blackens from an inky mass which envelops a majority of the room. Except for a sliver of water near the halfling, the waters are now considered to provide Total Concealment. 50% Miss Chance, no more AoOs for you all...

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

GM Rolls:

Tynan Miss Chance, High Good: 1d100 ⇒ 6

The pitch black of the waters becomes a veil for two sides- those embraced, and those yet to be.

Solrisa manages to 'see' through the inky waters well enough to strike the grand cephalopod twice! Tynan takes advantage of the close quarters to swing with both blades, but fails to connect, as his sight obscures in the blackness. Miss Chance rolled for you, Tynan. Eri quaffs a potion, underwater, allowing his sight to penetrate the dark waters behind the party, though it utterly fails to see into the opaque black. Hourpen swims 10', hoping to find Tynan out there, somewhere. Ascaria glances injury from the maiden, while healing himself, sight-free. Mortimer turns the tables on the octopus, injuring it mightily from within the grapple.

The octopus constricts its prey in its final moments, hoping to still the dangerous meat within its suckers. For those wrapped in tentacles, the pain slowly seeps in.

Constrict, S: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Constrict, S: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Constrict, T: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

In response for its pummeling from the giant, the giant octopus brings its hidden beak to bear, hoping to snap Mortimer in two.

Bite, M: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 damage

Sadly, its weakened state restricts it from a strong counter.

Underwater Rules

The party is up! Roll20 map has been updated. You are ground-level, in a room, roughly 40'x40', with water rising to 40', a stone ceiling roughly 15' above the water's level. A central pillar in the middle of the room seems to rise as high as the water. Also, remember you are cloaked in Total Concealment, so no AoO, and 50% miss chances are relevant.

Mortimer manages to both cook and cork the octopus, rending it inanimate. It becomes obvious to all less than a minute later.

And we are out-of-initiative.

Mortimer:

Yes, it is, in fact, edible. Probably would feed a fishing crew for a week, if lightly salted, a month, if deeply brined, then turned into jerky.

He then pulls out a spear, swims to the octopus and uses it to slice off a cooked tentacle.

He points upwards with the tentacle. "Maybeebeebee upbee dar? Ibeeblbe blscout. Blee blight black."

He starts spiraling upwards around the stone pillar (counter clockwise) looking for fish, threats and exit possibilities, spear and tentacle in tow.

Solrisa smiles in the inky darkness, unable to see jack. She tries swimming with her hands outstretched, looking for something, anything.

"AAAARRROOO!" Solrisa says, swimming blindly.

She waits and swims around.

"AAAARRROOO!" She repeats loudly.

And waits, looking around.

"You guys are supposed to reply with 'Den!', I think. At least that's how me and Rae used to play. One person was 'It'...and she was usually, actually always, me...and the 'It' person would swim around with eyes closed saying 'Aaarrooo' and Rae was supposed to say 'Den' until I caught her. But if I didn't catch her, then I'd have to sweep our room while she watched. I didn't ever catch her though, she's very tricky and sometimes I couldn't hear her say 'Den' very well because she said that sometimes my hair got in my ears. Still, that was a good game," Solrisa relates, still swimming blindly and smiling.

"We could still play now. AAAARRROOO!" Solrisa calls again.

Male Human Slayer 11

Tynan feels the tentacle's grip loosen, and wiggles himself free. Still unable to see anything, he swims upward toward the water's surface, hoping the darkness doesn't extend there.

Eri haphazardly points at the ink and makes a handful of it disappear only to be immediately re-inked. He does that until it all goes away. He then smugly looks at the party seeming to take credit for its sudden removal.

Roll20 Link- Age of Worms

As the waters clear, and various members of the infiltrating team rise to the surface of the water, the chamber's extent becomes better known. The waters do extend to a 40' depth, with four drains securely rooted in the floor, and the room above extends 15' to a rocky ceiling. The center pillar has a ladder embedded on its northern side, the full height of the pillar itself. The map is a little funny on the entering hallway- the hallway is at floor level.

The central pillar has a single lever mounted, and a platform runs to the eastern wall, where a lone door awaits. The waters, though cold and briny, are still, and the upper space of the room is empty of living beings, for the time-being.

Solrisa, realizing sadly that no one wants to play Aarrroooo-DEN with her, swims over to the ladder and follows Eri up. On top, if it seems safe, Solrisa will change back into her other armor. While she does so, she examines the vanishing octopus wounds from her body.

"Mort, look! I see a bit of the suckyhickies on my skin still!" Solrisa says, pointing at her arm where the octopus did some suckering. "That's where it tried to get me, but we got it first."

She wrings out her hair, twisting the blond strands to get as much of the water out as she can before changing into her full plate.

Male Human Fighter (archer) / Sorcerer (stormborn) / Eldritch Knight 1/7/7

Upon getting to the top of the pillar Eri gets a devilish glint in his eye. He slaps Solaria on the shoulder and yells, ”TAG, You’re it!! Suddenly he turns and dives into the water, ready to dive out of the way.

Ascaria laughs as the party plays in the water for a little while. He treads water as best he can and watches. He wants to draw it, but worries it might not work out so well under the current conditions.
