A bright, pulsing light suddenly shines out of the room containing the large crystal, revealing the dust in the air in its beam.

The two skeletons in K8 and M8 both stumble forward, encountering only each other they begin fighting each other in a blind fury.

The zombie threatening Byarsh launches itself at the seer, but stumbles past ineffectually and nearly comically.

The zombie in H7 continues flailing at Samaerew but is uncoordinated enough that the paladin is able to swat it's arm away.

The skeleton in F10 lashes its strange whip at Timmon and the barbed end slashes across the young man's face (3 slashing damage). Also the skeleton provokes an AoO from Timmon.

The khopesh wielding skeleton continues to flail it's weapon wildly around Tama, still failing to connect.

Was that standard DM initiative? Because if so you skipped several people and if not the skeletons have acted twice in a round. Can you clarify where we are in the initiative order?


Yea I know. So I had an initiative malfunction and posted the DM's turn out of order. Byarsh and Lylindra, you can resolve your tuns based on this round's map or last round's whichever you want since I made this mistake. Oops.

X'ed out enemies are dead, and the ones with the dot have taken damage. I'm sure I made a bunch of mistakes, if I did I'll fix them as soon as Byarsh and Lylindra take their turns.

Lylindra shakes the doubts in her companions from her head, focusing on the immediate foe.

She will step up to the zombie in H-7 and stab.

Seeing that it is not focused on her, she lets her guard down, attacking all-out.

Byarsh spares a glance towards the bright light coming from the crystal before turning back to the fight at hand. Drøm flaps its wings as it caws something in Auran and tries to balance on Byarsh's shoulder.

Yes, I most assuredly need to investigate that further. If the so-called gods can conjure miracles like these, it is little wonder the people follow.

He steps towards the light while tightening his grip on his staff. He whips it about in a manner only menacing to the mindless while extolling Samaerew to crush the walking dead he threatens.

5' step to E7 to provide possible flanking for Samaerew against zombie F7. Byarsh then tries to aid the attack of Samaerew, which fails to grant any additional bonus.

You never did answer the question as to whether the fire staff was consider Masterwork, if so add +1 to the attacks.

As the skeleton rears back to use the whip Timmon sees an opportunity to strike.
Timmon AoO Quarterstaff Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14, Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8+1 Fire

The whip cuts into Timmons face, drawing blood but instead of wincing in pain Timmon rears back to strike again at the skeleton, his eyes full of rage at a new whip scar that will be forming in the days to come. The anger causing Timmon to rear back further than he should and he ends up striking the ground directly in front of the skeleton, sparks flying off the end of the staff as it hits.

Batu retaliates against the skeleton that just dug his claws in (I7), launching a strike that shatters nearly every bone the skeleton has.

My assumption is that the 11 damage will put the skeleton down.
Seeing the bone splinters everywhere Batu then swings his mighty fist down upon the nearest zombie (H7)

Love the double 20s but then I follow it up with a 1 & 2 on the damage dice. *sigh*


Timmon:
The staff is in fact also masterwork, and counting that +1 your AoO hits the skeleton.

Timmon cracks the skeleton mightily in a shower of sparks, nearly driving it to the ground, but it somehow remains upright, yet splintered. Batu smashes his skeleton into a pile of mangled shards on the floor before moving his attention to the nearby zombie.

Byarsh:
You think that this light was triggered by you touching the crystal, but you will have to examine it out of combat to figure out exactly what is going on.

Lylindra slashes mightily at the zombie with her dwarven dagger, the dull grey blade of which rips the monster apart like a knife through butter.

Batu lands a solid hit against the khopesh wielding skeleton. Its empty eyes swivel to focus on the creature which has just injured it. It attacks and chips of rock rain from Batu's torso. (8 slashing damage)

The whip wielding skeleton flicks its barbed weapon again at Timmon, lashing him across the torso. (5 slashing damage) and provoking AoO's from both Timmon and Byarsh.

This action is going to be assuming that the 14 bludgeoning +2 fire damage that Timmon has done to the skeleton in F10 was enough to take it out.

Batu carefully moves closer to Timmon (5ft to G9) striking out ineffectually at the khopesh wielding skeleton as he goes.

The crystal in the side chamber continues glowing with the same almost blinding, pulsing light. You feel an odd nagging at the back of your minds to move closer to it and touch it.

Also, as part of my promise to fast forward through the first few levels to a certain extent, it is time to level (yay!), either to 2nd level or to 3rd level since I let the other group do that and it just seems fair to give you the same chance, whichever you decide.

I'm enjoying the power level in part because none of our characters are seasoned enough to fully understand what's going on in this sepulcher; it's a fun expression of awe-struck wonder. For that reason I'm open to either level, which is a little different from my normal interest in pushing into the level 6-12 range. Low level seems conducive to wide-eyed discovery of the world at large, so I'm feeling very comfortable with taking it a bit slower.

Byarsh takes a few deep breaths as his pulse gradually slows. Somehow swinging a staff at nothing in particular was far more tiring than it should have been. He looks over at the others as they check fresh wounds, and a quick attempt at rescanning the room with Detect Magic reveals the faint magic of the bow floating amid the wash of magical energy from the crystal. When Tama jumps to retrieve the weapon, Byarsh decides it best to give him a moment alone.

Byarsh:
The crystal appears to have distinct swirls of every school of magic in it's aura, which is something you cannot recall ever having seen before. It appears that at some point in the past, a large amount of arcane energy was dumped into the crystal, probably after having been drained from another source. You think that your touch is what "woke up" the crystal.

Tama:
The crystal appears to have distinct swirls of every school of magic in it's aura, which is something you cannot recall ever having seen before. Also you can make a Knowledge(Religion) or Knowledge(History) check with Bardic Knowledge to get some information if you are lucky.

The bow has the equivalent enchantment to a Least Revelation Crystal (Magic Item Compendium pg 66; when it successfully strikes an invisible creature, it marks their location for 1 round.)

Lylindra, unconcerned with any of the weapons, looks over the armor. She runs her hands over the bronze chain, noting the make, and considering the protection it could provide her... especially compared to the leather she currently wears, but notes that it would not allow the freedom of motion she is accustomed to.

Her eyes go to the studded leather. Heavier than what she wears, yet allowing for more motion, though less than her current leather.

She absentmindedly rubs her wounded shoulder while looking this over.

I actually like the idea of a faster progression, but I'm also hoping for a prestige class, so I'm biased. If people want slow, though I'm fine.

As much as this character will really start to bloom at 3rd level (would really love the 2nd level summons) I have to find myself agreeing with Byarsh on the process of discovery for these characters. 3rd level at this point might seem like too much of a jump. I say we go with 2nd and then see where things go from there. How are we going to level with HP rolls? I might suggest what I do in RL games. The player rolls HP and if unhappy with the roll get the DM to roll instead and is stuck with that roll even if it is lower. It doesn't increase the HP that much but it does tend to prevent the 1&2 rolls. Just my 2cp on it.

After seeing that Lylindra is recovered, Samaerew walks up to stand beside Byarsh by the crystal and gently runs his hands across the surface.

This character will also make a fairly major change at third level, so I'm excited to get there, but I'm not really in any huge hurry.

I'm out for most of the day, so I can mess with the crystal more tonight. I'm happy with whatever level we jump to.

I generally advocate rolling for HP, so lets go with Timmon's suggestion. Lets go to 2nd level, with the understanding that getting to 3rd will still come relatively fast to balance the exploration with getting to more heroic levels.

Tama:
You know from your travels that most grave goods have a ritual purpose related to their use in the afterlife. It is likely that to the First Men, this crystal represents something they wanted to bring with them into the next life.

Samaerew:
As you touch the crystal, you feel a warm power flow into you, feeling like the touch of the sun-warmed sand. You feel the power born of the desert flowing into you and somehow it senses your skill as a champion. From touching the crystal, you can get one of two boons, since I am not sure which fits your theme better. Either you can get +1d6 fire damage when smiting and against undead harmed by your channel and lay on hands, or you can take a thematically appropriate martial maneuver (from Tome of Battle) as if you had taken the Martial Study feat. The magic of the crystal can sense your fate to a certain extent, and thus give you a boon relevant to your intended path.

Byarsh:
History: You know that warriors in the south are sometimes buried with their weapons. Perhaps this crystal is some sort of analogous practice among the First Men.
Planes: Through your detect magic spell, the crystal has an odd resonance. You suspect that the crystal itself, but probably not the magic in it might be extraplanar in origin.

Well, since I was considering taking a level of crusader at third, I guess it's time to get around to reading ToB, though I still might take the fire damage.

Also, while we're on the subject of progression, just confirming a few homebrews we discussed earlier. You're still going to let me take the phalanx soldier figher variant's Phalanx Fighting ability as a feat at 3rd, yes? And I should also expect to get a chariot as a companion? (We'll have to discuss the mechanics of that based on the new vehicle rules in UC, which I have not read.

We have a while to work this out though.

Timmon at first looks at the wondrous glowing stone from a distance, watching the others, seeming to try and understand the magic and power that could create such a thing, let alone sustain it for centuries. He seems almost overcome with excitement over seeing an item like this.

Is this what corrupted the souls of the deceased into coming back? I just don't understand. But you say it is safe. It is of your ancestors, you should know if it is dangerous. Okay, I will approach but make sure nothing bad happens to me.

Timmon gets close and tentatively reaches out and places his hand on it, scrunching his eyes close, almost as if he is not sure if it will be searing hot.

As you press your ear to the crystal, you feel warmth and a whispering voice flowing into you. It senses that you hunger after stories to tell above all other things and gives you the means to tell the stories of the First Men. As a boon from the power in the crystal, you get 2 ranks each to Linguistics, Knowledge(History) and Knowledge(Religion). The ranks in Linguistics gives you knowledge of Djet, the language of the First Men

Timmon:
As your hand touches the crystal, you feel the power flowing into you like warm sand. The power within the crystal can seemingly sense your connection to creatures from beyond this world, and gives you the power to summon up the spirits of the desert. As a boon from the power of the crystal, you can use Summon Desert Ally (Sandstorm pg 122) interchangeably with your Summon Monster archetype ability.

Samaerew:
