"Long ago, there once was a beautiful princess, who lived in the far away land of Yenne. Yet, despite her comly countenance, she bore an ugly disposition; demanding her subjects lavish her ego through admiration and offering. One day, a old woman entered into the princesses court and offered one of her family heirlooms: a cracked mirror of tarnished silver. Outraged by such a pitiful tribute, the princess ordered her guards to execute the woman the spot. However, within the moments that the blade nearly took her head, the woman revealed herself to be a powerful witch. She had sought to teach the princess the transgressions of her ways, by showing her the flawed nature of her conduct. Through her adverse reaction, she proved without any doubt the ugliness that rest within her heart. As such, she would bear a curse, one that would match her outward appear to that from within, transforming the princess into an hideous hag. Misshapen and rotten, she was expelled from her kingdom, by way of pitchfork and torch, by those very subjects she had once abused; with nothing more than her vile visage, and the dull, broken mirror she so reviled."
So I haven't thought up a super solid story for her yet; but essentially, Cirianna was raised on fantastical fables and cautionary tales in her youth. These stories spoke of terrible fates and horrible curses, as well as the beasts and burdens which could befall any child or man who failed to heed their lessons and warnings. Yet, none fascinated her more than the "Old Crone of Yenne"; the story of a selfish princess cursed for her mistreatment of others. One day, she found herself lost in this very story, waking up in the demiplane known as Yenne, home to the Old Crone. The Crone took Cirianna under her care and taught her many secrets. Cirianna sought to find a way to break the curse placed in the Crone so long ago, and set out to discover a means. The Crone gifted her with the broken handmirror, hoping it would guide her on her journey. Cirianna fights with a paired Dagger and Sickle that she calls Athame and Boline. The handmirror acts as one of her Implements, with a storybook and amulet perhaps serving as two others. She uses her knowledge of fables and folktales to help her fight monsters, convinced they each bear some measure of truth in their tellings. Not sure yet what I want her Familiar to be, but the Old Crone is her Patron, whose theme I'm thinking will be Rune, to go hand in hand with the power of stories.

Another new idea for Thaumaturge. A little Babushka/Abuela, her implements are at the very least her soup ladle(filled with love) that functions as a wand Implement, and her scarf(regalia). Here to travel and keep all those young adventurers safe using old wives tales, bedtime stories, and home remedies. Perhaps pick up medic or herbalist archetype.
Shouldn’t the ladle be a chalice filled with some sort of ‘fortifying home remedy?”[/b]

You say that like a grandma's homemade soup ISN'T a fortifying home remedy! :P

I agree. Ladle is definitely more of a chalice than a wand

How about some villainous concepts? The thaumaturge's sympathetic magic could support some seriously heinous stuff. I've got an idea for a curse specialist thaumaturge. Collecting various taboo artifacts and supposedly cursed items as their esoterica. With shard of a shattered mirror as their implement, they seek to reveal the true dark reflections of the world. They would inflict curses on their foes as well as indulge some of their own making. You could be brutal with your esoterica, like a piece of rope used to hang an innocent man or an unopened letter of a dead soldier to his family. All that good(horrible) stuff.

Couple of things:
1) Been playing Disgea 6 and King Misedor could be a thaumaturge. Walks around with a chalice in one hand and an axe in the other.[/url] Has a healing ability and is decent in combat. His kingly clothes could even be Regalia!
2) Seems to me that there are a few 'mainline builds' for the thaumaturge. Sure, you can do some fun wackadoo stuff, but the basic builds seem to be:
I) Strength Build (like Mios), One handed weapon, other hand with implement, wear breastplate (or chainmail). High strength.
Ia) Variation of this build uses a natural attack like a bite or tiefling hoof-strike to free up a hand.
II) Dex Switch-Hitter Build: High Dex, use a one-handed ranged weapon (like a hand crossbow) and have a second one-handed finesse melee weapon in case you get into melee. High Dex
III) Charisma/Support Build. Make use of the Wand for spell/like attacks and maybe pick up the feat to use scrolls. Maybe the book implement to cast a few spells.
Now yes, there are other options like the Kitsune foxfire build, but am I mostly right in assuming these are the three main builds for thaumaturge?

It's also possible we'll get thrown a curveball with the feats and there could be a spot for Int-focused thaums who deal in RK or something. I don't think it's supremely likely in this book, though with how many folks have been asking for such a thing I'd be shocked if it hadn't been written down as a possible inclusion in a later book.

You know what, I have played such normal characters up until now, maybe what I need is something truly out there. Or I have read too much Stray Cat Strut. Maybe both.
So for something completely different. Magical robot cat from another plane, laser eyes optional. A small hunter automaton psychic and going into the rogue archetype with Free Archetype. Its eyes are gateways to the maelstrom (pure unfiltered chaos) and the spells are flavoured in a way that complements that.
That could be fun ^^

I keep on trying to find a way to incorporate the dark archive into the thaumaturge by making a skeleton thaumaturge but nothing is firing up the ol' neurons. Seems like there should be an idea there, right?
I'd probably go a crypt keeper route and just have a basements worth of esoterica that all possess (an often terrible) story associated with them........and youre just too much a creepy hoarder to let it all go and die

That would make for a good "lost memories" type of scenario. Your skeleton wakes up undead with only a few items on their body - your implements - that give some clues about who they were before. That could go into any number of directions, such as "solve your own murder" if the game allows for that.

The skeleton is actually a composite, composed of the bones from a small community that was destroyed in one of the Whispering Tyrant's attacks, whose collective psychic presence pulled the bones together into one body. Now it uses the few keepsakes left over from the town's destruction as its implements, relying on its own latent psychic resonance to invest them with power.
And if you want a more militaristic bent you can swap out the notion of a small town with that of a military company, the skeleton being piloted by the ghosts of the squad.

Howard Pierson Loveless; aka Mr. Pierson -or- H.P. Loveless - Male Human, Investigator/Living Vessel (Old One) -- A Private Investigator employed by to find a missing woman, Howard Pierson is a cut-and-dry stoic with a penchant for cynicism and candor. A retired veteran, Pierson took to law enforcement shortly after leaving the navy. He served for several years, until a case gone wrong resulted in the death of his partner and lover. This, coupled with trauma he developed in the military, lead to his quiting the force and taking up a career as a P.I. He mostly took on small jobs, until he was approached by Sir Thomas Waynnwright, a noble whobsought to find his missing daughter. He believed that she had become involved in a cult, claiming she had been abducted, and presented him with some strange artifact he found amongst her belongings. Pierson initially declined, but began having visions and hearing voices after touching the fragment. The relic had seemingly housed a piece of some elder beings consciousness, which sought to make itself whole once more. Pierson saw images of Waynnwright's daughter and knew all of this tied back to her. He now seeks to find the missing woman, hoping to discover the secrets of the entity living inside of his head.
I love this character and backstory......I also love the fact that I can't get Robbin Williams character from happy feet out of my head while reading it

Thanks! I imagine you mean Lovelace and not Ramon. Lol. I can see it. My inspiration was Edward Pierce from Cyanide Studio's Call of Cthulhu and, to a lesser degree, Sebastian Castellanos from Bethesda Softworks' The Evil Within. I've been trying to figure out how to use the Old One Living Vessel with a non-evil character. When suddenly I recalled Call of Cthulhu and put a bit of a twist on it.
Now to come up with one for the Fey Living Vessel. ^^

Speaking of my magical chaos robot cat psychic idea, the Wellspring Mage archetype would be absolutely hilarious for the theme. Depends on whether the Psychic still has 2 slots per level, though - only having 1 per level is a bit too thin.
Huge potential to really mess with the entire scenario of a given combat encounter. Mostly the party, but my people can take it ^^

Majasi was orphaned when disease claimed both of their parents, leaving them a ward of the Rahadoumi state; they threw themself into academics with the goal of becoming a master of healing, to spare others what they had seen. Unsatisfied with the archives of their homeland, they spent a time studying medicine in Qadira, but it was after an invitation to Nidal that they learned the most…

The ideas one could make from the Synthesist are limitless. My biggest desire for it to work in a 2e version of a character concept I had, which was inspired from White Knight Chronicles. But I have so many others that would work wonders through it! The idea of making the Eidolon and Living Vessel entity one and the same is brilliant! ^^
One such legend tells of an collection of weapons, each tied to one of the many Knights of Icosa and the King himself, scattered across the land. This arsenal of arms are collectively known as the Noble Regalia of the Sovereign King. It is said that the "One True Heir" of King Artorias' bloodline may claim these noble arms and evoke the might of the Knights. And Sir Kayden is believed to be that heir.
He wanders the land in search of the tombs of the Icosan Knights, to claim each of their Noble Regalia, so that he may protect theland and its people.
Kind of threw this idea together using some old conceptual ideas for various other characters and stories i have stowed away. Basically, looking to kind of evoke characters like FF15's Noctis and his Armiger ability; as well as Unlimited Blade Works from the Fate series. Defiently going to fine tune and alter this down the line, especially if the mechanics don't pan out how I need them to.

Time Oracle sure has a brutal curse. Permanent Slowed 1 at major? Actually might be the worst curse, which is saying something.
Time Skip is a great focus spell though, 1 action to give an ally within 30ft haste for 1 round and +1 heightens for additional allies. Looking forward to seeing if the other focus spells make the downsides of that curse worth it!

Being automatically concealed when you move is really handy though. The trick is to figure out how to get an extra action so you can move and cast; presumably several spells you know can do this.
The snapback charge that the Chronoskimmer gets is really neat on somebody with a lot of movement. I'm going to have to figure if "uses 2 actions to move and strike, has a lot of movement, has something to do with the extra action" is something that congeals into a character for me. If you could use it to flurry or use it with an attack other than a basic strike that would be excellent.

I don't know, Quickened doesn't work obviously because you can't directly mitigate the curse in any way. A Mature mount is probably fine to get a move, but even then some GMs might call that mitigation...
Concealed, and only after moving, is not strong enough to justify being in the major curse in combat IMO. Definitely a curse where you want to avoid the cursed state as much as possible, you're here for the focus spells (hopefully, only seen one) and the speed bonus, with the major curse being a very hard soft limit on your focus spells.

Does your GM tell battle oracles they can't wear armor, or prevent Cosmos, Tempest, Life, and Bone oracles from putting points in Constitution too?
IMO there are easier ways to tell someone not to play a certain class.

I don't think "quickened and slowed" is mitigating the curse directly, much like how how a tempest oracle gaining electric resistance (from their heritage say) is not mitigating the curse directly. Nothing prevents anybody else from having the Quickened and Slowed conditions, they just have 3+1-1 actions instead of 3+1 which they'd have without Slowed 1. A Stormtossed Tengu Tempest Oracle under its moderate curse has Weakness and Resistance equal to half its level to electricity, so they'd still take full damage from any electric attack they just won't take (or resist) any extra damage.
Mitigating the effect would not be "gaining another effect that compensates" but "removing the effect itself." The stormtossed tempest oracle still takes more electric damage when their curse is active, and the time oracle still has fewer actions under their major curse quickened or not.

Not my GM, or me when I'm GMing, but I've certainly seen some deeply conservative takes on what constitutes mitigation on these forums!
For some reason I thought Quickened and Slowed directly cancelled each other, but given that's not the case I'd 100% allow that option to Time Oracles, but the Electricity resistance deniers might not.
| Perpdepog |
That seems pretty in line to me, too. Being Quickened also places limits on what that action can be used for, so it's not a one-to-one refutation of the curse's effects in any case, even after considering they are expending some resource to do so.
Divine Access is going to feel fairly manditory on that kind of character though, more so than it already feels with a fair number of oracles, which is a bit of a shame. At least Haste is an easy spell to find.

Nonat1 was given the green light to preview the Thaumaturge, which he did in a livestream here: . He goes pretty in depth but his voice gives out before he gets to the feats, so we sadly still can't make a character :( but we get 90% of the thaumaturge.
Apparently Know Direction (the podcast) will be putting out their early access review for the psychic shortly, though as of this posting it doesn't appear to be out yet. Still, With all this information, I may be able to put out the beta version of my unofficial thaumaturge guide the day the dark archive drops!

I know this is more of a PC concept thread, but just wanted to say that getting details on how unleash psyche works has me very excited for the class. Cantrip damage (really psychic damage in general) in the playtest was very low given how it was touted as a... Not exactly at will blasting class but definitely a class with a focus on cantrips and focus spells as their main tools.
Tracking bonuses and penalties round by round is a lot more exciting to me than having daily limits on things as well. I do worry that maybe stupified is too debilitating a condition for when unleash psyche ends (way too many times I have failed DC 5 flat checks) but overall I still like it a lot.

I'm not super interested in the thaumaturge myself and having basically 2 separate conversations in a thread isn't great. Much better to make 2 separate threads that occasionally overlap.
