Limited edition Gen Con exclusive Goblin masks that provided Fort save rerolls if properly worn would take care of most of the problem. That said I work in construction and have encountered mask resistance from educated rational dialogue to alpha posturing backed up with "facts" seemingly derived from beer commercials that have devolved into shoving matches and masks being destroyed. That would be a tough spot to put volunteers in.

Maybe just call this year The Season of the Plague and have characters die if players won't larp wearing a mask.

If Alvarez doesn't have dollar sign eyes right now....

Hellz, just create one that is the iconic goblin smile, all teeth. License to print money.

And safety.

But mostly money.

Too bad Paizo doesn't do pet projects.

I would buy one of those even if I wasn't going anywhere near a convention this year.

I love this!

Hulking Hurler, this is a brilliant idea. One of the challenges of being mask police is finding the right tone to take to convince reluctant mask users to trying out masks. At the library, this is involves two parts for me:

Part One: Being firm, gentle and consistent.

Part Two: Empathy and humor.

If someone says, "I hate wearing masks!" often I agree with them, talking about the inconvenience and recounting my own humorous mask stories until I say... "But I was surprised when I found out how well they work at stopping germs. I normally get the flu three times a winter, but this year... Nothing. They're awkward as heck, but man... I've never had a winter without being sick before." Then I add in a chipper tone, "I have had a barf-free year, my very first!"

Eventually, we get to the point where the person laughs, and decides to don the mask anyway for the short time it takes for them to pick up their books.

With this though... We'd have another AWESOME tool to add to the Mask Police toolbox. It's exclusive! It offers a fort save reroll!* All the cool kids are doing it!

* And that fort save reroll is both humorous and educational, making it all the easier to sell the idea of mask-wearing.

I love this!

Hmm

I mean, I would buy goblin (or other Paizo-branded) masks... Heck, I would get several!!

If OP chooses not to host live events at GC Live, I will focus on trying to get my lodges to participate in Pop Up Gen Con at the FLGS's. With the infection rates dropping and vaccination rates increasing though, it is looking more and more like OP at GC Live will be possible and pretty close to normal, although we're going to have to see how April and May turn out first before a decision gets made in that regard.

I would venture that GC has lawyers going through the legal aspects of requiring a vaccination for attendance as well as wearing a mask when the state does not require it. Will Indianapolis still require a mask in September is unknown obviously.

I must admit, I would be more likely to wear a Paizo mask.

But I will think I might make a Beholder, errr I mean Eye Stalker, head mask.

No need to apologize.

Taking this behind the curtain as it is a deviation from the thread topic:
I don't think we are focusing on the same thing. Everything you said it true and I agree. What I was pointing out is, just because the state mandates a mask requirement doesn't mean it will be enforced at the municipal level. My home city is an example. At one point, while our city council supported the mask mandate and the restrictions on local businesses to restrict dine-in service, our police chief refused to enforce them initially, though he later changed his position after a number of meetings with the Mayor/City Council. I know of a number of other local municipalities that took similar positions up to and including never enforcing the mandate during its entire run. Either the state has decided not to take action against those municipalities or it doesn't have a clear authority to do so. Either way, they continue to persist.

There would be language in the contract spelling out what organizers can and can not do. In the absence of such language, Paizo can dictate whatever they want.

As someone who has had numerous years of experience working with Paizo at Gen Con, I can confirm that there is a lot not covered in the contract.

I like the goblin mask idea as well, but we are not going to be the "problem" attendees anyway. We represent the "hard core" community, but many (most?) players who attend are casusal to uncommitted. Its going to be a much harder "sell" for them to buy masks in order to enter the Sagamore especially if none of the other games/publishers are requiring it. Though offering free ones along side the retail ones could work.

Of course there is also the problem of proximity. The closest they could sell the masks would be the remote selling booth at the top of the escalator. Nearby, for sure, but it does mean a walk-in has to walk away and then stand in line to buy a mask for entry. They are likely to just keep on walking.

And that still doesn't address the booth in the vendor hall. I think we could all agree that requiring masks in the Sag, but not in the booth would be a hard sell on the staff. They could voluntarily wer them of course, but if none of the customer/attendees do, they may not be inclined to support that idea. Again, if the ICC or GC supported a mask requirement it would be easy-peasy, but if not, it becomes nearly impossible to require it for the booth when surrounded by hundreds of other publishers who don't.

Of course, this is all just wild speculation, so I don't think any of us needs to be concerned about it for at least a few more months.

I would be more concerned if there were no talk about it, and specifically no preparation.

As others have pointed out, not only will there have to be a policy, but likely physical preparation as well as training for frontliners to execute whatever plan is put in place. I don't know what the lead time is on goblin masks, but I suspect the unit of measure is weeks to months.

An ad hoc plan thrown together with a form letter handed out to volunteers 5 minutes before an event begins is going to be a disaster, and end with both a lot of angry volunteers and angry attendees.

Some people are going to be very angry if they buy a plane ticket only to find out they have to wear a mask; others are going to be very angry if they buy a plane ticket only to find out mask wearing is not universal. The only win-win is to inject enough certainty into the process before people start committing.

I'm fairly sure the PtB will have this all figured out in advance, but I doubt it'll be soon. Gen Con hasn't even announced how they are going to handle badges/hotel rooms or how many will be available. This is one of those years that if you have any reservations whatsoever, you are better off not reserving your flight or hotel in advance unless you are prepared to cancel last minute. This is going to be as new an experience as last year was and not even Gen Con has all the answers yet.

Or in the immortal words of Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, "there's a thousand things that have to happen in order, we are on #8. You're taking about #692"

I am going to guess that Gen Con is going to have to have everything in place and ready for sign-ups by June 1st. I would also guess they are hearing a lot from the advertisers and companies that come to GC. Paizo found out about the date switch the same way everyone else found out. It appears that everyone was caught by surprise. So, right now companies are scrambling to find out if they even going to attend. Some may want to, but won't have employees willing to go, but then some will be the exact opposite.

Really, we've got two months to see what is going to happen. I really would not be surprised at all if there is no mask mandate. I also will not be surprised if there is no vaccinate proof required. They may say they plan to limit attendance, but I doubt they have to limit it. The attendees might very well be limiting themselves.

I am certain this is going to be a 50-60 percent attendance con. I'm not even sure if OP will be there running live games. Paizo may just not see where the costs justify it this year. I would not be surprised if they limit OP to demo games and let the main focus be online or via Pop Up Gen Con.

I have removed some posts and the replies to them. We don't yet have information about how tables may or may not handle COVID safety concerns.

Lets work on keeping the bickering out of the thread.
