Apologies for not checking with you about the Psion class. My intention with it wasn’t to replace the Psychic class, rather, it’s to qualify for the Elocator prestige class, which is one I’ve always wanted to try.

It's OK. Psionics have a different flavor than Occult classes, so I do want to allow them. It would help if you gave a link but I've got it.

Psion seems like a "generalist" psionic class. The classes that just give "psychic sword" or similar things would be what I'd shy away from.

Edit: OTOH Characters to explore the "weird psychic field" of a person, place or thing would be useful.

So probably not a Soulknife, then. Rats, that was my first idea. Here’s another I’ve kicked around: a warforged who’s constantly tinkering with his own structure, trying to make himself better. Would be based on the Aegis class, specifically the Aberrant archetype. It’s a really flexible class that can add anything from a poisonous stinging tail to wings to increased size, lots of variation in the direction I could go depending on the needs of the campaign. How does that sound?

Edit: hold up, I forgot there’s a Fighter archetype that’s pretty close to the Soulknife, the Gloomblade, which would be especially appropriate since I was thinking of a Fetchling. I think that’ll be my Plan A: a Fetchling Gloomblade from the Shadow Plane, who believes himself descended from Count Ranalc, the exiled Eldest, and joined a plane-hopping group in part to track down clues to the whereabouts of his missing ancestor (also provides a nice hook for mythic powers, if we are so lucky). My computer’s in the shop right now, though, so it may be a bit before I can put together a final build.

I'm heartened that there are so many people interested. Getting the group down to five will be challenging.

I said a week so my decision on the final group will come in this Tuesday, the 7th.

Of course, given that PbP games if have drop outs, I'll keep a waiting list so that even those not initially picked may have a chance.

Edit: I'll look if there are more questions and post a more detailed description of the organization soon.

I'll be stepping out. We have enough good candidates so I feel the GM should be fine in this matter :) Have fun, people.

I do like investigators, and it looks like fun, but I think you're using archetypes that can't combine (both Psychic Detective and Steel Hound replace Poison Lore,) and it looks like you took 8+ int skills per level instead of the 6+ int that investigators get (you have it listed correctly in the class features, but not the skill section.)

Zorblog, Haha yes your right, Its a work in progress, and build on an old alt. So not yet 100% done.

Also I think with the level DMG output from some of the others Builds being just a skills monkey may not be enough.

I'll throw out one more question... Would a paladin be usable in this campaign? I get the feeling it could make subterfuge a little harder, but I want an opinion there.

I've basically narrowed my ideas down to the following:

- A goblin from Sigil, some sort of scoundrel with magic. Thinking he could be a Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster, a Rogue (Eldritch Scoundrel), or a Bard without too much difficulty. Could even see him as a Mesmerist. Would RP this guy as basically a grifter, fast-talker, and generally ne'er-do-well that wound up getting recruited by the organization because they needed someone quick with their tongue.

- A Virtuous Bravo paladin mixing swashbuckling and smiting. Or, alternatively, an Oath of the People's Council + some bardic stuff paladin. Probably a halfling. Intended to be a derring-do type from a Renaissance fantasy world with experience fighting pirates and such. REALLY wants to find a way to go back home, but their prime material home is so unheard of that nobody knows exactly how to find it. Perhaps she did a stint on Spelljammer vessels once she was lost in the Planescape?

- A tinkerer of some sort from a fantasy-meets-technology world. Think 'Tinker Gnomes' or 'World of Warcraft Gnomes.' The issue is I have NO IDEA what class I'd want to use for this, as I'm 100% unfamiliar with 3rd party classes that make tinkering a thing.

@GM if you have any ideas for the third idea, I'd love to do that. Otherwise, I'll pick one of the other two ideas.

@Al-eon Sal-Del Hil-leen, I'm a bit worried about my damage output as well, so I hear you there. I'm kicking around tweaks to my build ideas to see what feels like the right mix.

@Shorticus, have you every looked at Spheres of Might and the Technician? That might be the sort of tinkerer you're looking for? Maybe even the Mad Scientist archetype if you wanted more magic mixed in. I don't know if they'd be allowed, but I'll toss them out there.

@GM Hansj, would the ability to disguise myself as a gnome, halfling or human child be sufficient for being an operative in the various planes? I'm looking at the Distorter archetype as an alternative to the greater hat of disguise.

Shorticus wrote:

A traditional paladin would be challenging two ways - make subterfuge harder and would generally create a situation where a lot of choices are already made.

I understand the paladin archetype proposed earlier as not necessary having the same problems.

In fact, any paladin that could be interpreted as the idealistic follower of a fairly abstract, the ends-might-or-might-not justify the means religion or philosophy would be fine.

This is an approximately "good" campaign but with multiple versions of good (and evil) perhaps competing and arguing so I'd like see the characters be able have tough but not unsolvable moral quandaries in front of them.

That sounds at least interesting at the very least. Bringing something unique and flexible is good.

I DO like the Technician from Spheres of Might. I've never, ever used Spheres of Might, so I'm still staring at this and squinting, but it does look REALLY fun. However, I can also see that it might be a bit... too good at skills?

@GM, if you want to allow this class, I'll give it a whirl and try to design the character because this looks very fun.

If that class is too much, I'll make a paladin instead. I have a good feeling that a CHA-based martial with social skills + the aforementioned backstory could be fun in this campaign.

Lots of awesome interest in this campaign! Since the racial classes are out, have you considered the Great Hero fighter archetype I sent you? Have not received a confirmation on that issue.

So I've been looking at the technology stuff, and I think I would like to go a slightly different way with how I build my character: instead of going cyber-soldier fighter, I think I would like to go occultist and reflavor all of my magical abilities as technological ones (i.e. burning hands would be a flamethrower type effect generated from my armor). In effect, he would be something like Iron Man mixed in with something like Cyborg from Teen Titans: he can reconfigure his armor to create weapons, tools, and so on.

My main reason for not going with the Technology stuff is that it's SUPER expensive. For example, to have a cybernetic arm with an implanted weapon, it's 14,750 gp plus the cost of the weapon; additionally there's the issue of the fact that almost all technological gear uses charges, and there's not a really good way to recharges stuff effectively (I know there's a spell that will add some charges to an item but it's a 3rd level spell for most casters).

Hi Vrog, that's a great way to go, I did a similar thing with my High Tech Detective but using Nanites as the thing driving her "Magic"

Taking Arthur C Clarke's well-known saying
“any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”

This is what I did it may help.

One thing I did put in this PC is eschew-materials So that the Nanites take the place of bits and bobs of spell stuff. Her Circuitry ats as the signs and there is sound when needed. So the elements of the spell are flavored tec.

Also, I tried to keep away from spells that did not seem to fit the PC.

Like anything Divine and the like.

I do agree about the Tech prices, As probably yours and my PC both come from high tech planes, the cost in gold seems crazy high.

I really wanted her to have a rail gun rifle, {which is not mad levels of DMG seeing some of the builds here.} But its 30k gold. Yikes.

Eschew is a pretty good choice, but I don't think I'll have room for it early on: between technologist, point blank shot, precise shot, and weapon finesse, I'm gonna be thin on the ground for feats.

I'll probably take it at 9th.

Hmm. If two people are going for tech-oriented builds, then I suppose I'll avoid going tech as well.

I'll save the Spheres of Might Technician for another campaign. I'll work on a straightforward Virtuous Bravo Paladin.

I figured Magdh as an inscrutable god of fate fit that bill pretty easily as far as paladinhood goes. Moira's main concern is making sure that grand-scale fated events happen as they should. If she can save a bunch if lives in the meantime, all the better.

A short Story:

AL-eon was waiting, it was something that Al-eon was good at. In the street, cutters were moving past as the market ended, and the time they called night started. Al-eon had been waiting from the start of the day, bells had rung and the stalls had been set up. She had not moved in all that time. In Al-eon's mind, there was running over the evidence. Checking the trail of facts that had led her here and now. Then her lower functions passed on the information. Someone was coming. The robbed form moved down the side alleyway stopping by a door, a key came out from under the dirty fabric. A lock was undone, a door opened and the form moved into a shadow. Al-eons moved, stepping and band placing a foot between the door and the frame as it closed. A gruff voice from inside came.

"How's dat?, I have a blade, you want slicing!"

Al-eon pushed her gun past the crack of the door and rested the barrel on the forehead of the figure. Dark dead eyes looked out.

"A word Master Rill, if you don't mind"

Time passed and thinking was done, then the door opened more, and Al-eon slipped in, closing the door behind. The gun never left the figure. With the other hand Al-eon lifted out a plastic ID card pass. Holding it up for the other to see. Al-eon asked.

"Now tell me about this"

Trying to generally recap:

-- I want characters whose MOTIVES are somewhat clear. For example, "Failed Hero of Destiny hero" of destiny aims to be redeemed, a nice clear motive. "Spencer Bevel" is less defined but somewhat clear as more or less aid the organization - similarly, The Patient lurker or Al-eon Sal-Del Hil-leen. Moira is nicely "drawn" but I'd like to know what she want. Others might want to clarify further for their character, what drives them.
Being a Paladin definitely clarifies one's motives too but for that, you would want to clarify also how you get some leeway for your own choices (zefig's clarification for example).

-- Between rogue, alchemist, and investigator, I believe the standard Paizo classes and archetypes can encompass technicians and technologist types. At this point, it's easier for me say just NO 3rd party EXCEPT psionic generalists (except if there's another OK I've forgotten about).

I have said a definite NO to the Great Hero/Gobling book.
The tortured Paladin class seems perfect for TheWaskally's
concept.

Vrog, tech-flavor occultist is quite a neat idea.

Thanks for the update. I can now work on stating my character up.

Working on my sheet. Almost done. I've chosen to play a Halfling Paladin (Virtuous Bravo) of the Silver Flame from the Eberron Campaign Setting.

I'll have a post up shortly with questions answered and stuff. I worry my character is a bit too mechanically similar to Mus' halfling swashbuckler (I realized that after looking back to see who had a PC), but honestly I'm aggressively okay with that. The potential of there being TWO swashbuckling halflings tromping around is actually really cool to me.

I do want to ask: how are you handling HP? Max at first, average on subsequent levels? For now, I'm assuming that is the case.

Also, would you allow (at later levels) Deific Obedience (Iomedae) as a stand in for Deific Obedience to the Silver Flame? Iomedae or Sarenrae, either/or; both seem like good fits for my character's religion.

Same, definitely! I thought about saying hi when you first mentioned considering a halfling virtuous bravo, but I figured I'd just keep quiet and see how your ideas developed. I'm glad that's where you ended up — having a duo like that sounds super fun if we're both chosen, and the character concepts themselves seem very different so no issue there.

Working on a little vignette that should add a bit more clarity!

It is so hard to decide.

So I have called together a committee...

The Committee

Setting

Spoiler:

Between assignments, the entire group rests in a nearly French-style chateau, in perfect condition, somehow surrounded by impenetrable jungle (entrance in and out is teleport/plane-shift). A group of halflings maintain the grounds, grow food in the garden and work to the maintain the routine. You’re part of a group of about thirty agents recuperating between missions, practicing and reading complex texts. Loose talk is discouraged but the atmosphere is friendly. Your part of the chateau is nearly empty of furniture so you have the feeling of camping out.
The previous night a “committee” of higher ups arrived through the usual gate and after a night’s rest, some of you are called in to meet them by the retainers. The conversation is in progress.

Some of you will have met some of the committee members before.

Dialogue

Spoiler:

Cordelia: “My, there are a lot of us”.
Magnus: “Yes, quite inefficient I suppose”
Aranuna: “Friends, it is not a matter of efficiency, it’s that for this assignment, we need to make sure all viewpoints get considered.”
Marwon: “Then it’s politics”
Ari: “I’m just here because I love you all” [bats her eyes in all directions, some smile back knowingly, others roll their eyes]. “And you need someone with some sense” [groups relaxes]
Dr. Washington: [after a pause]“I am here mostly as an observer”
Kargal: [finally speaking to the party] “My friends, don’t mind us. Say whatever you wish or not. With so many cultures here, we have to be very informal”
Gorgio: “Can we tell them of the world at least?”
Cordelia. “Just a little, Remember it’s need-to-know”
Gorgio: “Well, it’s perhaps average, some magic, common races, on the verge of the pistol and the steam engine. A wonderful place! Excellent food, merry wenches..."
Magnus: “So what’s the issue?”
Gorgio: “The enemy is using accelerating progress as their weapon”
Marwon : “Ah...”
Ari: “So me and Aranuna are here to make sure no one uses that as an excuse to go too hog wild and create another planetary federation, ah”
Kargal: “And I am here to make sure you don’t throw things back to the primal mother.”
Ari: “May the gods forbid that” [smiles, turn to party] “So tell us of yourselves”
Marwon: “I always like most to find how people think.”
Cordelia: “You all seem fine. But how will you cooperate? Who will be your leader? Who will be contact person for the organization? Who has skills for this?”
Phireston: “I would be curious of your strengths and weaknesses. What unique qualities do you bring?”
Aranuna: “My friends, do not worry much about any statement you make. We have plenty of information. All of you will get assignments. Either this one or one soon. This is just an opportunity to add whatever you feel would be useful.” [he gestures to the committee members to hush themselves]

[You speak, obvious a fairly short statement each]

Committee Member Descriptions:

Spoiler:

Dr. Gerald Washington: Tan skinned human male. Obviously from a mid-tech world. Dressed in khaki short, a short-sleaved shirt, a flack jacket and transparent face shield/helmet. A close look shows exposed skin is cover by thin plastic.

Kargal medium sized warforged android; humanoid made of black metal with LEDs in various place.

Marwon of Aerolian: Apparently of an obscure humanoid race. 6’2”, thick set. Yellow eyes that occasionally glow with psionic energy. Wears functional brown wool coveralls. Radiates the calm of a Zen monk when you see him but seems slightly worried when he speaks.

Cordelia. Tall female humanoid (6’2”) with a high forehead and features that can form a severe expression. Wears a functional blue dress with a utility belt holding a couple small wands and as some technological devices or other.

Aranuna, 6’ 6” asimar with his body split vertically, with left half apparent made of something like liquid metal including his hair. Has a refined, noble look to him.

Ari: Gorgeous elf with a confident and commanding baring, wearing a simple peasant blouse, a beautiful velor riding jacket embroidered with flowers and semi-precious gems fine leather breaches and riding boots. A closer look shows that her features are not that of any well known elven types (not wood elf, high elf, sea elf, drow or other). Her flash violet at times.

Magnus: large, male wolf shifter. Dressed in loose, clean, well-crafted hides. He features general settle into a half wolf set when he relaxes but fairly emotional and his features become more wolfish when he gets excited, move to more humanoid when he composes himself.

Gorgio: Alert, slim-for-a-half-orc, dressed in a clean somewhat threadbare military uniform, in the approximate style of 17th century Earth but more colorful. He has nervous habits, sometimes stroking a protruding canine with a gloved hand. He’s generally friendly, smiling

Phireston: A dark hooded, robbed figure. Perhaps a bipedal athropod. It speaks common with a calm, gender neutral voice.

The above is mostly for flavor and as an opportunity for you to say anything you wish in-character.

For my concept, I think genius supersoldier works pretty well.

And yes, average hit points after first level

Just finished my character! ...Well, mostly. I still have some mundane equipment to buy, but I rather like how Briallen has turned out.

(This is Shorticus, by the way.)

Her full history and statblock and other such things is available on her alias page. I may adjust a few things, but she's basically done.

EDIT: Also, just want to say... I REALLY hope I get to go all-out on an undead or evil outsider at some point. Bri here can hit for 1d4+34 damage in the right circumstances against the right enemy. I want to SHANK 'EM GOOD.

EDIT: Removed all mentions of the Muleback Cords item tattoo as I just realized I never removed them. (I wanted to get it, but... no can afford. :/ )

I'll link what I think are important tidbits below.

QUESTIONS:
[/b]1. What was your world of origin like?
__A. Technology-level?

Eberron's technology varies from primitive, tribal communities to a sort of magical version of the early modern era. Imagine post World War 1 societies that built off of magic and the control of elementals instead of utilizing gunpowder and advanced chemistry, but combine it with some Renaissance aesthetics and weaponry choices (minus the firearms), and that very well describes the modern nations of Khorvaire following the Last War.

__B. "Values"? (honorable? Corrupt? Trading oriented?)
Eberron is a varied world, but the nation of Thrane is a Theocracy that could be described as honorable and morally driven, as well as zealous and perhaps militaristic in their fight against evil (see: the Demon Wastes). Peace is valued, but conflict is sometimes seen as a necessity, and zealous behavior has led to such atrocities as the Lycanthropic Inquisition.

__C. What was geography of the world?
There are multiple continents, each supposedly formed from the bones of the progenitor dragons, with vast subterranean complexes. A wide variety of climates can be found, and Khorvaire (the continent Briallen is from) epitomizes that variety, having everything from rolling plains to fetid swamps to cold mountains, wastelands, and jungle. Also, there are dinosaurs. Halflings ride dinosaurs.

__D. What races existed and how did they relate?
Too many to name quickly, but as a halfling in Thrane and a member of a Dragonmarked House, Briallen was at once both a noble among halflings and uncommon in her nation due to the majority species being human.

2. How does your character manage to keep a low profile in a mostly human plane? What would your *cover* occupation be?
If Halflings are common enough, then there should be no difficulty. However, Briallen can at least pretend to be a human child or perhaps a human with dwarfism in a pinch. She knows a little about sailing, singing, and dancing, as well as some basic medicine, and has considerable skill with a rapier. All of these can be useful in providing cover stories. Being handy with animals and a gymnast also is a plus in coming up with an identity. Largely, though, she relies on her natural charm and her knack for diplomacy. Her Sleeves of Many Garments help, too.

3A. If you were in the orgnization for a while, what was the last world you were in like? How did it end?
Briallen has been in the organization for about half a year now, and as such has only really been on one mission so far. Said mission took place on a human world without magic in the early Medieval era being infiltrated by demons and their cults. Briallen disguised herself as a stunted human (though she DID raise a few eyebrows). The mission ended with a good ol' fashioned demon purge. Briallen got to stab some demons good.

3B. If you have NOT been in the organization long, how to you find your way to Sigil or where you were recruited?
Briallen sort of stumbled into Sigil while adventuring on the continent of Xen'drik. Her party wound up in the sewers of Sigil, and she was the sole survivor after combat with cranium rats (among other foes). She eventually adapted to the strange city and even spent a year on a Spelljammer (which is where she learned about sailing, actually!). After building up a reputation as a trustworthy woman and a talented fighter, the halfling paladin was approached by a wizard that was a member of the organization...

MOTIVATIONS/GOALS:

- Prevent evil where it can be prevented.
- Redeem those who can be redeemed.
- Find whatever it is that the Silver Flame told her to find in the Planescape.
- Find a way to return home.
- Return to the Church of the Silver Flame with the unknown artifact.
- Do really cool things and see really cool places. Come on, the Planescape is SO WEIRD AND COOL!
- And try not to fall for cute guys. Interplanar romance is probably not a good idea.

ALLIES, ENEMIES, AFFILIATIONS:

- Briallen has taken quickly to working within the secretive organization, those wizards and mystics who fight to preserve the Planes. She wonders as to their motives at times, but they seem trustworthy, and she knows she works best with a little direction.
- Briallen appreciates the Harmonium for trying to protect Sigil, but believes the Harmonium can sometimes be overly harsh. She has a similar opinion of the Guvners (AKA the Fraternity of Order).
- She also appreciates the Sensates and has a few friends among them, but has not joined (nor does she intend to).
- However, she abhors the Xaosiects.
- She also believes the Bleakers are misguided, but does appreciate their charitable works.
- Rakshasas, Mind Flayers, Demons, and Devils are all creatures that Briallen strongly distrusts. She might abide their presence in Sigil, but she finds it INCREDIBLY hard to do so outside of Sigil, even with her realization that the multiverse allows all sorts of beings to grow and change.
- Given Eberron's history and the struggle of dragonkind against evil there, Briallen generally finds herself to be more willing to trust dragons than most.

I'm still debating whether to take the Divine Bond with weapons for extra damage or to take the Divine Bond with an Angel to give AoE Protection From Evil (but better, scaling with level). On the one hand, early access to Keen for 15-20 crit range. On the other... +3 Deflection/Resistance vs. evil for 5 minutes to all allies within 20 feet of Briallen (including self), +4 at 8th.

Leaning toward the angelic option partly because I can RP the halo as burning with silver fire, and also because she doesn't get Deflection to AC from her smite. And no spellcasting.

They're very different narratively for sure! Mechanically they have a lot of similarities, but I can see your character is going toward an intellect route vs. my character going full-on smitebuckler.

Definitely hoping both halflings get in. Attack of the tiny fencers!

Al-eon Sal-Del Hil-leen - Theams/Trops:

Al-eon Sal-Del Hil-leen, is a classic
'Hard-bitten brooding detective'

In the Philip Marlowe, The Big Sleep meets Rick Deckard Blade Runner, way.

The motivation that drives Al-eon is the 'need to know the truth'.
Al-eon was made to find things out. Sent here to discover 'The truth' behind things. The organization is by far the best way to find that out. It also alines with Al-eon's own world view.

"To serve and protect"

by means of a sense of justice of need for there right and wrong.
Inner Conflict comes from this, who is Al-eon serving and protecting while dealing with that. What is the priority Al-eon's home plane of existence or ALL planes of existence? Outer conflicts come from personal relationships Vs professional ones. That is my thinking of how I wish to play Al-eon. I hope it's what you're looking for GM. :)

CLEAR MOTIVATIONS/GOALS:

- To survive as an 'alien in an alien land.'
- To help the organization Protect.
- To protect those who can't protect themselves.
- To find the truth of things.
- Find dangers so she can protect her home plane.
- Find a way to return home.
- To take with her knowledge so it can protect itself.
- To Explore and learn
- To find others like herself, Synthetics learn about their experiences and lives.

This is a placeholder for TheWaskally's dwarf paladin. More to come.

At the Committee meeting:

The invitation had come by means of a street runner.
She had been following a group of Dusties after a tip of a cult was going to try and hit on them. Once she read to the summons she waited until the Dusties where face back in their compounds than headed to the meeting.

AI-eon got there easily not liking to be late to such things wanted in that still way AI-eon did. The meeting started and the Committee came in. Talking about a mission. And who may be needed for it.

When they asked for the member's organization to speak. She did not hesitate but stepped in front of them at once.

To the Committee Members

The 7' foot tall form of Al-eon Sal-Del Hil-leen stood before them. Al-eon looks faintly female in appearance but could also be male from another angle. To those with a keener eye can see she is a Synthetic being and construct or 'Andriod' to some. Muck like Kargal the war-forged wandroid on the committee, but far less obviously so. No LEDS, just the fine marquetry of circuity over the skin.

IMAGE here

"Community members, I can see you have our files. So I will not waste everyone's time talking about my abilities and capabilities in detail. There are may capable beings here. I know this must be hard. So to support my request to join this mission I will say this. I have done team missions before. and.. frankly, I enjoy them. I do know now about the commander role, I feel others may be best suited for that role. However, I do not mind being a second. Also in the past, I have acted as the communications operative, I'm willing to do that role again for this mission."

Looks around at those there, before going on.

"for the mission, I suspect from what you have said, that this mission will mean fact-finding before action. So a subtler approach will be needed at the start. This kind of work I pride myself on being able to do well. I have considerable knowledge on matters and this too I will bring with me to the mission. I, therefore, offer myself to be in the group undertaking it."

Then waiting a moment adding.

"I would ask about the weapon spoken of and the from the enemy is taking on this world. But I will understand that may be forthcoming only at a later briefing and not here at open committee. However, if you can supply information on such matters now. It could make the minds up of others who would seek to undertake the mission."

Ending with that, AI-eon bowed and step back so that others can present themselves to the committee.

[ooc]Simple and to the point.[/i]

Committee Meeting:

"I will keep my speech short," the halfling paladin said simply. "Others may be more skilled at subterfuge than I. Others here have more cleverness, more talent for misdirection and disguise. That I shan't deny.

"But when evil rears its head, you know well there will be a need for ready blades, and mine is the readiest of all of ours. And with the Silver Flame as my witness, you know I shan't be tempted by the whispers of the wicked. Your goals and mine align.

"Whatever role you would have me take, I shall take it. My duty is to cleanse evil, whether by the sword or by the spoken word, and I shall not shirk my duty."

Motives:
This is what Spencer might have said, if he was asked about his motivations when first joining the organization. Purely hypothetical, of course, since I don't want to put words in an NPC's mouth.

"One more question, Mr. Bevel. Why exactly do you want to work for us?"

"Oh, a real inteview classic! Let's see. There's a short answer and a long answer."

"We don't have anywhere to be."

"Right, well, the short answer is that I want to help people. But obviously that's not enough of an explanation. I mean, there are lots of ways to help people, I could have just stayed in my hometown and started an orphanage or something."

"So here's the long answer. There's this story I heard as a kid, sort of a folk tale in the world I come from. As far as we can tell it goes back hundreds of generations. It's about a boy who climbed a big plant into the sky and found a land full of giants. Sounds kinda silly, right?"

"If you've never heard of magic or planar travel."

"Exactly! And we hadn't, not until a few years ago. So we thought it was just a myth. Now our anthropologists think it might actually be based on a true event, since we know there really are portals to other worlds, and those worlds really are inhabited mostly by giants."

"Mostly?"

"Hey, you may not look like giants to yourselves but you do to us. Sorry, not the point. Here's the point: the boy in the story is basically your quintessential 'hero'. He manages to trick a giant out of some gold and run away with it, escaping back into his own world. When the giant tries to follow the boy chops down the plant, and the giant falls to its death. The boy and his family live happily ever after."

"So you see yourself like him? I suppose it's a nice story..."

"What?? No! It's a garbage story with a garbage hero! What sort of person has so little curiosity that they can find a mysterious world full of literal magic, and the first thing they want to do is steal some gold and run? What sort of person has so little compassion that they'll murder an innocent stranger just because they're of an alien species?"

"I want to join your group because it's a chance to do that story over again, but actually get it right. I want to explore new worlds with radical empathy, doing my best to help out without selfishness getting in the way. I want to learn everything I can about this thing you call magic, understand it to the point where I can start to harness it myself. I want to meet strangers and learn to treat them with respect, not the fake kind where you nod solemly and mumble about tolerance, but the kind where I actually interact with them the way I'd want them to interact with me."

"And most of all, when other people are doing these things, I want to tell their stories, keep their records, give them the tools they need to succeed. Because hopefully I can leave the links between worlds a little stronger than I found them, instead of chopping them down."

"Does that answer your question?"

At the Committee Meeting:
Spencer glances around at the others to see if any of them want to speak next. When none do, he steps forward.

"Hey. So as I'm sure most of you know, I'm not usually out in the field. Most of my work has been with research division, studying and assisting from behind the scenes."

"But from what I'm hearing, this sounds like a mission where you'll need a researcher, not just on call but actually on the ground. I mean, Dr. Washington, we saw the fiasco that developed last time with those silicon golems when none of us were there to set things straight. You'll need someone on the team who's done their homework, read all the appendices, packed precisely the gear we need."

"And I think I can be that person. I'm not looking to lead, but I can be the logistician, the glue that keeps us from falling apart. I can help deal with devices of magic or tech. I can help us keep a low profile. I can heal."

"And, um, I can also stab things. When needed. I'm quite good at stabbing, it's one of my areas of study. Hopefully that won't be the primary thing I'm called upon to do, but it's nice to be prepared. That's how I see it, at least."

I shall announce the five characters that are chosen tomorrow evening.

Keep in mind. if you aren't chosen and you really want to be in, keep touch (no more than once a week) and I'll find you a place sooner or later.

At The Committee Meeting (Oh Dear..):
As the halflings and the android spoke at the meeting, behind them a dirty-blonde dwarf in an explorer's outfit walked to the far wall of the meeting room like he owned the place. There several expensive bottles of liquor and spirits were resting on a small table. The dwarf took out his own large mug and began to fill it with various intoxicants rather loudly. Despite the attention of the majority of the people in the committee meeting, this dwarf finds a nearby chair and sits down with his large mug and takes several large gulps before reclining fully in the chair. After several moments of shocked silence, the dwarf began to speak in a heavily-accented Common.
"Yòu knòw whò Ì àm. Yòu knòw whát Ì càn dò. Sò whàt's thè nèxt dámn mìssìón?!" The last part of his words were accented by loudly cracking his knuckles in his one unoccupied hand.

Arlo's Backstory:
Arlo works hard to keep his backstory and secret shame unknown to others, unless they are members of the Committee. I figure, if both Spencer and Arlo are chosen for this campaign, the halfing could have read Arlo's backstory in a file he came across, since he's been with the company for many years.

I have updated her history and made it clear why she is here and what she is trying to do.

the Committee:
Moira stands to one side of the room, leaning against a sideboard and taking everything in with a knowing smile. "This place doesn't sound too different from my old world. Maybe not quite to the airships yet...you say it's a nice place, Gorgio you old scoundrel? Maybe less like my world then...or were you only paying attention to the wenches?" She winks at the half-orc then adopts a more somber expression, casting a sidelong glance at Kargal. "I am glad to hear we don't need to burn the place though. Always better to quietly nudge a few stray cogs back into place to keep the whole machine running as fate would have it, eh? Are you sure it's the Dark Traders and not just some genius pushing tech forward by leaps and bounds?"

Motivations:
Moira thinks of her job description primarily as an arbiter of fate. She strives to do so in the least destructive way possible, but understands that in the natural cycle, sometimes disaster wins out. She focuses on the big picture. Sometimes forests need to burn in order to thrive, and controlled burns save far more lives than wildfires. She doesn't relish those moments, but she's been at this long enough (and due to First World time shenanigans, that's longer than most know) that she only lets those times bother her enough to serve as motivation for the times when she does have the freedom to choose a more immediately positive outcome. She tries to tread carefully the fine line between the will of Fate and the path of righteousness. In terms of smaller choices, she pursues truth, discovery, and joy. She has unanswered questions about her own past that bother her from time to time - why exactly did her world have to burn? Where did her scrap of silk come from? - but she figures she has plenty of time to figure out those mysteries before her job is done.

Here's Moira's character sheet - I haven't added equipment or traits yet, leaning towards Minor Technological knowledge. It turns out that between Sensei and Fey Obedience: Magdh, she's actually got a lot of bard functionality for inspire courage and knowledge skills without actually being a bard.

I know we've got a handful of paladins kicking around here, I'm actually kinda curious to see how a whole group of paladins would fare on a covert mission.

: @GM Hansj, would the ability to disguise myself as a gnome, halfling or human child be sufficient for being an operative in the various planes? I'm looking at the Distorter archetype as an alternative to the greater hat of disguise.

Yes, that would be fine.

Sorry not to answer that sooner

A response to the committee:
Among the group of agents called to the committee meeting is a goblin, notable because goblins are somewhat rare on the grounds and for a slight blue tinge to his skin. Cordial enough when spoken to, he makes little effort to initiate conversation, but instead seems to be mostly absorbed in a tome he's been studying. When the committee makes it's presentation the tome is put away and he waits patiently for his turn to speak.

When his turn comes, he bows his head to the members of the committee and speaks with the closest one might call a neutral accent given the variety of influences on the common language the organization attracts. "Thank you for the opportunity to make my case today. As I'm sure you're all aware, my specialty in operations such as this is as a short or long term mole, blending in and gathering actionable information for others to act on. That more or less describes what all of us do, but my skill set allows me to blend in or escape notice more-so than some other agents in the field.

"Although I have some basic training to rely on when my cover might be compromised combat is not my specialty. Should I be selected as part of a group mission I would be better suited as a scout, gathering information and leading the rest of the team to an opportune target than I would a primary assault option. My abilities would be better utilized in a roaming support role than as a team leader because I'm more likely than most to spend unable to contact the rest of the team due to my infiltration duties. If you're looking for someone to lead the team I might suggest an operative with plenty of experience in a variety of assignments." The goblin pauses to look meaningfully at Arlo.

"I appreciate your consideration for this assignment, and should I be selected I hope that I can see this mission through to a successful conclusion. Some of my recent assignments have ended rather abruptly and without the closure that one might expect. If you have any further questions do feel free to ask. Thank you for your time."

Background:
The dust plays in the dying light of the saloon. Sadie looks out upon the gambling floor leaning her back against the bar with her elbows resting on the brass railing. Her black Pork Pie hat covers the small vestiges of horns on her head. The horns are one of the only things that betray her succubus heritage. Her porcelain skin, hourglass form, violet red-flecked eyes only enhance her human heritage.

She was a striking figure dressed in tight leather. Her angelic smile juxtapose the two whips on either side of her well-shaped hips. She frequently keeps the peace in the whorehouse by disarming and subduing rowdy gunslingers when needed.

The Committee sent her here to manage one of the multi-dimensional crossroads intelligence gathering honey pots which are sprinkled among the many worlds.

Sadie was surprised and excited to be recalled for another mission.

Motivation/Goals:
Sadie is against killing, and will subdue or incapacitate when possible. She only uses lethal force when no other way exists.

She considers herself a patriot to the Committee, having been recruited when she was a young orphan abandoned in Sigil.

Meeting:
Sadie moves forward in the crowded room. She places her hand on a spectacularly muscled Orc fighter as she draws closer. "Sounds like you need Stealth and brains more than brawn. Her hand moves up to touch the fighter's rock hard pecs. "Although they do have their uses."

Character Concept:

Tiefling
[Fighter/Lore warden 3][Ranger 2][Swashbuckler/Mysterious Avenger 1]

The committee has nearly finish it's deliberations when Sadie comes rushing in and presents.

Ari looks Sadie with obvious interest, licking her own perfect rose lips. She speaks to the rest of the committee briefly and then walks over to Sadie and whispers in her ear, "you may be a little late for this assignment but ... ** spoiler omitted **"

Ari excuses herself and won't be voting on the final group...

Sadie grabs the orc's hand. "We'll need you more than they do." She follows Ari with the nameless fighter in tow.

The Results:

Each committee member may choose one:

Dr. Gerald Washington: Spencer Bevel - a competent researcher is a must
Kargal: Al-eon Sal-Del Hil-leen. Honestly, I have to pick a fellow android.
Marwon: I believe we will need the lurker, psionic energy matters in this plane.
Cordelia: I am not sure, I hold off on any preference
Aranuna: [thinks for second] Arlo Brighthammer. He is a mover of destiny and hopefully flexible as well.
Magnus: [waits} My choice too would also be for the dwarf. We need at least one warrior of heft.
Gorgio: Moira may have me mistaken for someone else ... but none the less I like her style
Phireston: An android and a psionic have been chosen. A competent researcher, A full wizard? - none seems available. But we can provide support in that department. A competent fighter, our dwarf and who could deny him? But a leader? Who would be a leader? Briallen d'Jorasco? But that is six. We were told to pick five.
Cordelia: Well, what did they expect when choose such a large committee? Six it will be.

Phireston: Well, that is it. [The hooded, tentacle entity stands to give a summary as the rest of committee relaxes, happy to have him finish. ],

"Our six herose

  • Spencer Bevel,
  • Al-eon Sal-Del Hil-leen,
  • The Lurker,
  • Arlo Brighthammer,
  • Moira,
  • Briallen d'Jorasco,

please assemble. We will make an final inspection and attempt to fill in holes in you preparation. Can you use scrolls?

Simeon (who could not attend), Sadie (who is occupied for a bit I'm sure) and others will no doubt serve as seconds if we need others. I hope not but (shrugs) we often do. Be ready and continue training.

And, while I might suggest Briallen d'Jorasco, you six should the leader yourselves. You will have wide latitude once you are on the plane.

Also, hopefully, you all know the soul-twisting experience of entering an interdicted world. Or you will soon. Not at all like an easy plane shift. Well, there are worse journeys. I remember journeying down the Styx alive an eon ago. Still, my kind experiences twisting madness somewhat differently... "

The dwarf, identified as Arlo, by the Committee, finished his mug of alcohols, cleaning the cup on his cloak, and walked to the center of the committee room to join the others.

Spencer's eyes light up when his name is called, and again at the question about scrolls. "Uh yes, actually! I have a bit of a knack with them."
+14 to UMD with scrolls and a trait that lets me reroll, hopefully that will cover most of our needs. It will be a bit wild going on interplanar adventures without a full caster, but I'm sure we'll rise to the challenge.

He gives an instinctive little half-nod at the proposal of Briallen as leader but doesn't comment. Instead he turns go greet Arlo with a tentative smile as the dwarf approaches the rest of the group. "Hey. Glad to have you on board."

The dwarf frowns at the cheerful halfling and grunts an acknowledgement. "Sò.." Arlo started, as if casual conversation was a new language, "yòu ùsèd tò jùst bè à rèsèàrchèr, hùh? Thìs ìsn't gòìng tò bè yòur fìrst fìèld wòrk, ìs ìt?"

If you want Sadie, just whistle. You know how to whistle don't you?

You put your lips together and blow.
