Yes, come join the fun.

Perennial bump as we have plenty of room in our group for new players.

Hello! I've gotten more interested in OSR-style games and settings lately and I'd like to give Swords and Wizardry a try. I also quite enjoyed Sorcery! based on Labyrinth Lord. I love the idea of crossplanar characters, it makes ideas much easier!

How would a new PC be inserted into gameplay?

Some quick notions, based on existing aliases:

1. Stauntram Uthuan, determined dwarf paladin.

2. Theshen, generous and charitable noble Osirian cleric and distant descendant of a solar deity.

3. Vincenzo Goya, cold-hearted Chelaxian assassin-for-hire.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 3) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 2) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 2) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 1) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 1) = 5 4
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 3) = 21 18

Sure let me know how any of those sound!

We already have an assassin and cleric in the group, so a paladin would fit in well. We'd simply add you in after this combat.

Cool. :) Feel free to send me on any info I need to know IC about where my character has been just before now.

Starting Gold x 10gp: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6) = 14 -> 140g

Edit: Question. Do paladins and rangers get the fighter bonuses from having a high Strength score?

I think Stauntram is ready. He may also be the only dwarf paladin on this world!

Stauntram Uthuan:

Male Lawful Dwarf Paladin 1

+5% experience bonus

STR 18 1-5 +50
INT 9 1 Maximum Additional Language
WIS 12
DEX 14 AC Better by 1 point
CON 15 +1hp 100%
CHA 4 1 hireling maximum

Saving Throw: 12

HP: 9
Bonus:
AC: 17 (Plate Mail and high dex)

Languages: Common, Dwarvish

Racial Features:

Defenses: The player-character Dwarf has a +4 on saving throws against any magic.

Stone Sense: Dwarfs easily takes note of certain features of stonework: sloping corridors, moving walls, and traps made of stone – in particular: falling blocks, rigged ceilings, and tiny arrow slits designed to release poison gas or darts. They can also identify whether stonework is recent or not. There is no established die roll or rule for using these abilities; exactly what a Dwarf does or does not perceive is up to the Referee.

Darkvision: Dwarfs can see in the dark to a limit of 60 feet.

Class Features:

Prime Attribute: Strength, 13+ (+5% experience bonus)
Hit Dice: 1d8/level (Gains 2 hp/level after 9th.)
Armor/Shield Permitted: Any.
Weapons Permitted: Any.

Divine Favor: Although Paladins do not receive a class-based saving throw bonus in Swords & Wizardry, they have better saving throw chances than any other character class due to the divine influence of Law. If the Referee is using an alternate saving throw system, it is important to take this into account: Paladins should generally have base saving throw “target numbers” 2 points better than those of a regular Fighter.

Lay on Hands: A Paladin can “lay on hands” once per day to cure others of 2 hit points of damage per level of the Paladin, or to cure disease. If the other person is afflicted by more than one disease, only one of these will be affected per five levels the Paladin has attained.

Immune to Disease: Paladins are immune to all diseases.

Warhorse: At any level, the character may summon a warhorse that will arrive from the wilderness to serve as the Paladin’s steed. This warhorse will be unusually intelligent and extremely strong (5 HD). However, if the horse is killed, the Paladin may not summon another within a period of ten game-years.

Equipment:

Plate mail 100
Sword, two-handed 30

Backpack 5
Waterskin 1
Rations (trail, 7 days) 3.5
Bedroll 0.2
Sling 0.2
Sling stones 0
Chalk, 2 0.1

0gp left

Appearance and Personality:

A craggy, weathered face with bristly dark red hair.

A cantankerous but well-meaning personality.

Background:

1) Where were they born?

In a dwarven settlement under the foothills of the Iron Mountains.

2) Who are their parents?

Strack Uthuan - blacksmith, a stern but fair father

Grumgwi Uthuan - herbalist, a kind but firm mother

2a) Are they still alive? Are there any other guardians/close family members?

No. The Uthuan family was butchered along with several others in a particularly vicious raid in Stauntram's childhood: giants and orcs allied to slay and plunder. Stauntram barely survived, and was found by a wandering human monk who brought him to the nearest settlement. He spent some time in human lands, and learned more smithcraft, but gravitated back to the worship of Torag - and more martial service.

3) What were they doing before now?

Stauntram spent several years rediscovering his heritage and training as both a blacksmith and a servant of Torag. He became proactive in hunting and destroying threats to the land, especially to dwarves and especially from giants and orcs. But his focus has been tempered by his time spent among humans and others, and he knows the benefits of fighting alongside them.

3a) Why leave it all?

No family to return to. A cause worth fighting for. A planar tear from his world into this one.

3b) What did they leave behind?

Ruins. Old memories. His former world.

4) What does your character want?

To make the land safe. To prevent any dwarf child from suffering the same fate as him. If he cannot return to his homeworld, he will simply do those in this one.

They do not, no.

That's fine as I didn't include them, just confirming.

Is Stauntram ready?

He looks ready to me! You just have to figure out what you are doing down here in this godsforsaken place. Were you part of the Prince's party, perhaps, or did you come on your own? If it's the latter, there might be something wrong with you, as it's pretty much seen as a death sentence. Old warriors sometimes make this their final journey when they're ready to die, but pretty much nobody else comes down here.

Prince's party works. Stauntram is stubborn but not suicidally so.

Okay, we'll go with that.

We lost some players due to the virus, etc. Anybody interested in joining this game?

Let me get organised but I remember you run a great game.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 3) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 5, 6) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 3, 1) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 1) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 6) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 4) = 17 16

Gods Daaaaamn!!!

What do you need, broadly speaking?

Those are some good rolls. We currently have a cleric and a paladin.

Still level 1?

Are we to be a party of 3?

Wizard are viable?

I may just go fighter so at least we can just kill stuff rather than diversifying

3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4) = 11 gold

Any issues with reskinned items? Ie chainmail as a breastplate or half plate style armour? Bastard Sword as katana etc?

Chainmail 75gp (reskinned as Samurai style armour)
Bastard Sword 20gp (reskinned as Katana)
Short Sword 8gp (reskinned as wakazashi)
Dagger 2gp (reskinned as Tanto)

105gp

5gp in coin remaining.

Str 16 +1 to hit and damage and +5% XP
Dex 15 + 1 AC / + 2 AC Fighter parry bonus
Con 14 + 1 HP / Level
Int 10 + 2 additional languages
Wis 14 State of Zenlike composure and +5% XP
Cha 7 Foreign Customs, Lack of an apparent sense of humour and little empathy

Level 1
HP 9
AC 17
Saves 14

Speaks with a foreign accent, adopts alien customs and grooming
Zen like state of composure and patience
Lack of an apparent sense of humour and little empathy
Stoic

Arrived seemingly out of nowhere this strange warrior quickly attached himself to a local monastery. He took a year living and labouring there, learning both the local language and customs (which he does not wish to adopt). He recently was attached to the court of the local lord, where he dwelt for the last month, before the novelty of new addition wore thin and he was left to make his own way in the world.

It seems that the local lord does not desire his service and so he must sell his sword arm like these vagabond "adventurers".

He has little in the way of funds or equipment beyond arms and armour, as he has been living off the largesse of others until recently.

Is recruitment still open? I would like to try this.

First
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 5) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5, 2) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 3) = 15 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1, 2) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 4) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 2) = 13 11
Second
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 2) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 5, 1) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 2) = 13 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5, 5) = 20 15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 2) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 1, 2) = 7 6

I seems that I might make a fine assassin.

Grand Lodge

That would be awesome

We could certainly use the backup!

Yes, everyone is welcome. I would also like to rule that everyone who joins now will have already been with the party from the beginning.

For the new arrivals: Please post a "flashback" in the IC thread when you are ready that gives us a bit of insight into your history and/or character so that we get some ideas about how to RP with you. Also please describe yourself a bit and tell us something that your PC loves and something that s/he hates.
