Pathfinder Blasted My Starships Out of the Galaxy

General Discussion

I was only getting the Pathfinder playtest rules to have a look at and maybe get some ideas for Starfinder.

Well that failed, and soon I found myself subscribed to Pathfinder Second Edition.

I prefer the science fantasy setting of Starfinder, but the rules in Pathfinder, with the new 3 action economy and the way criticals work are awesome. Yes, to me, these alone are enough to switch me over from Starfinder back to Pathfinder. Then add on the simplicity of the proficiency system. I just love how these mechanics change the flow of the game. Yes, I'm a crazy rules nut, and the elegance of Pathfinder Second Edition really does rub me the right way.

So, it will be Pathfinder Second Edition from now on for me. I will probably still continue to purchase Starfinder as I still enjoy reading about the setting. I do hope that one day Starfinder will get the Second Edition treatment as I would love to see Pathfinder and Starfinder share the same core mechanics. I have a feeling that might take a while, if ever, so I will trade in my starship for a wagon and keep rolling those d20s while dreaming about stars.

Nothing stops you from reflavoring PF2E as science-fantasy, you know.

Yeah, really. It's a simple palette swap with minor mechanic changes, is all it is. Even PF1 did it.

Yeeeeeaaaaah, there is literally no reason to only play one system at a time, nor a reason to write a post where you tell us you're "leaving".

That's what I am slowly doing for my homebrew near future science fantasy setting. It still needs lots of work to flesh it out so it won't be ready to play for a while.

In the meantime, I am after adventures I can just play with minimum effort which fortunately Paizo produce.

What I would prefer would be unified core mechanics between Pathfinder and Starfinder, so one system, 2 settings. That wish is due to my homebrew campaign setting which sits somewhere between Pathfinder's and Starfinder's campaign settings. It will just make it easier to blend classes, monsters and equipment together.

I'm not leaving Starfinder, I love the setting and ideas that come from that too much to leave, so will continue to buy it, but just won't be playing it.

I was hoping others feel the same, but sadly I have a feeling it may be too soon for a change to Starfinder.

I'm in a similar boat. I really love the Starfinder setting, but find the "plethora of different mini-systems" approach to be an unnecessary memory drain. Plus it runs the risk of the occasional disappointing subsystem (the starship combat rules don't work for me, unfortunately, leaving me with a need to handwave ship-to-ship combat or to clunk together my own, more abstract version).

I think it is way too soon for a revision (and am skeptical it would ever come anyhow). I think it's plausible a 3PP will produce a "science-fiction add-on for PF2". That would suit me, personally.

Now I am beginning to wonder when we might see a Starfinder 2nd edition. Maybe a couple of years after the Advanced Player's Guide for PF2 comes out?

There's a lot of hand wringing about it being too soon for a rules update/change, but personally I would buy a Starfinder Unchained in a nanosecond.

I love Starfinder. Their setting is great, the art, the adventures, the stories, and everything are top notch. I've been having an absolute blast playing a Solarian Android for a couple years now.

However, the rules have never been *that* great.

Here are just a few of the things that irk me:

1. Small arms are over-nerfed because of Operatives
2. Archetypes are absolutely useless
3. Theme ability score boost is nearly inconsequential
4. There are too many races and not enough meat on each one.
5. Weapon and armor lists are huge and difficult to skim through for no good reason. Armor will always wind up in nearly the same place, and there are *still* many levels where you can't find a weapon you truly want.
6. Cantrips don't scale.
7. Action economy is weird, and multiple attacks are unsatisfying flurry of misses.
8. Grenades are useless.
9. You can't wear enough magic items.
10. The skill system is frustrating and too swingy.

I could go on...

I think the issue with grenades is that they are too expensive. Otherwise, having an AoE that you can full attack with isn't too bad.

But, I guess while where at it, maybe they could've explained what happens when an AoE weapon crits.

And maybe, as wild and crazy as it sounds, maybe they'll have the gonads to properly explain what happens when a starship fires at a creature on ground and provide an actual example of it xD

I for one am very happy Starfinder is nothing like PF2.

I am not a fan of PF2. Likely wouldn't be into Starfinder if it was like PF2. Really, the only major complaint I have about SF is the starship combat stuff. Beyond that... I'm pretty happy with it.

I am not a fan of PF2, but not for mechanical reasons. The mechanics are largely fine, its the setting decisions that are borked. I left Forgotten Realms for Pathfinder due to FR's overwhelming hatred for the concept of Lawful Good, I am not pleased at all to see it leaking into Pathfinder.

I like 2E's combat system the most. Not a fan of the class system. I like how classes are handled in 1E and Starfinder. I really like the 3 action system. Never cared for the Standard move swift system. Grenades are crap unless you are the Bombard fighting style. Even then meh.

I like the skill system for the most part. Not to many issues with it. Combat maneuvers are crap.

I don't mind the use of magic items and magic isn't the main focus. I like the focus more on technological items. I kind of wish magic wasn't there to begin with.

Weapons are. hit and miss. Too many and not enough truly distinction between them. The level system (and for armor) I find to be crap. You have to upgrade so much over the course of your career. Only with 10% return.

I love the accessories for weapons but fill they missed the mark on somethings like optics. Why have a manual sight and a sniper scope? They do the same thing with the sniper score adding range.

I like Starship combat, understand the purpose but feel its over complicated. I mean Starship combat usually eats up a lot of time in our games. I like the reduction in number of to hits.

I don't care for the Stamina/HP/Resolve system. I fell its a bit over complicated. I like the medicine concept in 2E and wish Starfinder had that.
