Cool useless things you're sad you can't do anymore.

I've mentioned in other threads(and I was pretty upset about it and probably should have waited till I calmed down about this to make this posts, So... sorry.) About not being able to fly to the store and back instead of walking, or be in animal form all day in downtime as a druid(granted you can at level 10, but it burns through a lot of spells.)

Other people have talked about the nerfs to prestidigitation, unseen servant. No longer can you have an invisible imp that fetches your mail or does your laundry.

What are some other things you'll miss if spell durations aren't lengthened? Have any other classes lost some of this kind of roleplay potential?

Flying all day with Overland Flight. Smelling good with Prestidigitation for hours on end. Giving the entire party Fly spells with a decent duration. Heroism on for the entire dungeon. Passing around infused extracts as an Alchemist to the entire party. So many, many, many more. :(

I’m the opposite, myself: I personally think it’s cool that my mage armor lasts all day long without having to be a double-digit level or casting extend magic, and that with the right prep, even my Fighter could consecrate a church or bring someone back from the dead for less than a fifth of the cost it was previously. I’m even thankful for being able to as a Bard sing literally all day long to grant a bonus, or as a Barbarian rage 20 times a day, even if it is in 3-round bursts.

I honestly didn’t even notice about unseen servant, but I just noticed it can even FLY, now! It can fetch things in difficult to reach spots, or spots that mage hand could not go, which is pretty neat. It’s definitely a spell which could benefit from a heightened extension that can increase the duration to a longer period and dropped the concentration.

Magnuskn makes a good point about Prestidigitation, it is pretty limited for a non combat effect.

Mage armor. Agreed.

Bards songs and barbarian rage. Agreed.

Rituals. Agreed.

Unseen servant. Yeah but it can't do your laundry, wash dishes, or fetch your mail. All those flavor aspects are impossible now.

Prestidigitation. You can't even clean yourself off with it anymore.

Clean yourself?! I always used it to soil myself if I had an empty bladder but wanted someone to leave me alone.

Sneak attack with good weapons. No more a greatclub-toting brute break kneecaps and shatter shoulders, fighting dirty to destroy the bad guy. Have to stick to using the iconic rogue weapons instead of the interesting ones. Not a fan of the weapon restriction on rogues.

Pick what skills your character can be the best at after deciding on class. Want to be a wizard who is also the world's best wall-climber? Only way to get climb as a signature skill without your class deciding it is multiclass fighter or rogue, because before you truly perfect high-speed mountain climbing, you need to learn to use this greataxe or how to attack foes that aren't ready for you. Not a fan of signature skills.

Spend all day/night as a badger or what have you. Now it is limited to a minute (or with a class feat, an hour). I don't think this is a bad change, and I don't want to see it return necessarily (unlike my other two complaints), but I am a bit sad to say farewell.

Build a magical cottage. Secure shelter is gone, the only replacements I see are rope trick and magnificent mansion. Which means my options for magical housing are a mansion that is overly opulent, or a pocketspace party tent. No more humble cottages. Sad to see it go, but I can understand wanting to limit the number of ways to make the dangers of sleeping in a dungeon trivial. Might disagree personally, but I can understand doing it.

I miss reincarnate.

Agreed - that’s it probably needs an increased duration or a heightening built-in.

Sure you can. Tidy can still clean objects, including things you wear, and there’s no limit to how long you can concentrate on it. I do think the whole “you must concentrate on your beer to keep it cold” thing is a bit too silly.

10 minutes is the limit before you're fatigued, according to the 'concentrate on a spell' action on p197? I suppose you could stop concentrating every 9m 59s and restart 2 seconds later, but that's getting a bit silly. Prestidigitation has been severely nerfed from PF1, but it was probably overpowered in that edition. Ditto for Unseen Servant, but I had no issue with players using stuff like this creatively outside combat, as it often made for great RP.

How were unseen servant and prestidigitation overpowered?

Autocomplete fail.

Fits right in with several of the uses I've seen posted for the combo of a lone mage using Unseen Servant, Mage Hand and Prestidigitation to control temperature. :)

Those spells/cantrips were always extremely popular, as evidenced by their transition into 5E with almost no changes. I had great fun with them as a player, but Prestidigitation was so far above the rest as a non-combat cantrip that it was unbalanced. Unseen Servant wasn't as bad, but both were prime candidates for abuse by creative players. That's no longer an issue in PF2, but they may have gone too far toning them down. Time will tell.

Oh, don't worry. Since both of those are uncommon spells, you also need to beg your GM to make them even available. Chances are if you got a GM who is a bit of a dweeb, s/he won't even do that.

Dark Archive

I miss the ability to start with an 18 in a stat that is not prime for my class.

(Or twenty in my case :-)

Seriously, while I guess they didn't give a free stat bump for your class was to stop folk maxing out two ability scores, it does mean you really can't have a total genius for a barbarian (or ... a bard).

Thus no first level characters with maxed out CON.

There is something here that I don't get.

The thread is asking about "cool usless things" you were used to do. Smelling good with Prestidigtation is the only thing in this post that qualify. Being able to fly, having heroism for a whole dungeon, passing around infused extracts are NOT useless things.

Either the answer does not relate to the question, or the question should be "which incredibly powerful things you used to do with magic are no longer possible".

Sure flying all day ends up being really strong in a dungeon. I Can't deny that. We could argue over whether it's too strong, but I think it's obvious I want characters at higher strength levels than some on this forum So there's no point.

I was talking about a wizard who decides walking is for people without 5th level spells, casting overland flight in the morning, and flying all day around his home town where it doesn't really accomplish much while people complain about the show offy wizard.

Also doing laundry with unseen servant. Both of these things add flavor to a spellcaster character, but don't really add mechanical benefits till you point those spells at something else.
