Bestiary entries in the Playtest?

Prerelease Discussion

Like the subject line says -

Will there be a small bestiary that we can use with the playtest to design our own encounters? Or will we just have whatever entries are in the playtest adventure?

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, they're giving us a bestiary. It won't have flavor info or much in the way of new monsters but will have a number of stat blocks including some not in the adventures.

Hello..Can someone tell me, when or where I can download this bestiary? Has it already been released?

Thx

Nope. It will be released around the 2nd Aug date for the playtest PDFs.

It will be released on August 2nd along with the Playtest Corebook itself, and can be downloaded the same place (which is here on the Paizo website).

I'll also be releasing a homebrew monster daily, in case there are not enough in the playtest.

Oh..I just ask cause I already got my printed playtest stuff (hardcover rulebook, doomsday dawn adventure and the playmats) one week ago...

Congratulations. You are now the most hated person on the forums. Flee while you can. If we're feeling sporting, we may delay the torches and pitchfork relay race for a few minutes.[/s]

That's cool, which store did you get them from?

Lol, I mean... you probably just got them in trouble for selling it about 2 weeks before it's supposed to release.

Jesus people, don't wreck my bait, even if it's semi-transparent!

My sarcastic response was because you had the book and the rest of us don't.

Yeah, I got that..still I do like to be untorched and unpitchforked for as long as possible ;)

I guess that is why there isn't a printed bestiary... to keep early arrivals from starting their playtest tables ahead of schedule.
Congrats of your copies! However, the company that sold them to you deserves the harshest punishments legally permissible. At the very least they should be black-listed and the owners sued for breach of contract and damages.

That would really be a pity, cause as I already stated, it is a great shop!

:(

A bit harsh, at least in Paizo's view.

I do also want to mention that for many, many stores, they are putting out a ton of new products constantly and putting out on the shelves may have been accidental. Sending out books early isn't necessarily a nefarious action, so please be wary of ascribing ill will or malice to people who have books early. Yes, its a major bummer, but please be respectful.

I'd leave the business/legal decisions to Paizo's business & legal teams.

Naturally those are my opinions, not mandates. I leave such decisions to those with the authority to make them.
Personally I would prefer to respond critically to a company sabatoging my buisness interests. It wouldn't be hard for Paizo to investigate either (just order a book and see if they ship it early again).

Also, I ascribed no ill-intent above. I don't care if they 'meant to do it' or not. The consequences of breaching contract should be absolute; or what does a contract even mean? If there are no consequences for their actions, why would they bother to care if they made a mistake; or got caught taking advantage of a natural monopoly?

I wrote an email to fantasywelt.de and informed them about this..I hope they won't get into too much trouble...

They won't get in trouble. It's not that big a deal, it's not like it caused Paizo financial trouble. And the store didn't actually gain anything by shipping early, so I see absolutely no reason for anyone to make a fuss over it. It was an accident, we can all move on...

If they are really that nice, they'll say a quick "Entschuldigung!", take the books down until Aug 2nd and everyone will be happy. Since stores like these don't deal with Paizo directly (there's a distributor in-between), information like these can sometimes be lost along the way.

The listing of creatures by name takes up 3.5 pages in the Playtest Bestiary.

That sounds like a lot of monsters.

For the playtest module (Doomsday Dawn I think it's called) are the monsters also listed in the module itself or will we have to look them up in the bestiary each time we encounter them?

It sounds like there are a ton of creatures in the bestiary, are rules going to be found in it (or the Playtest rulebook) for making your own creatures if you so desire?

Full stat blocks are only in the Bestiary.

(I don't know whether or not we've publicly answered your second question yet, so I'm not going to be the one to do so.)

They've iterated in the past that they want us to be using the creatures in the bestiary (and PC built npcs to an extent?) to test if their framework for producing monsters even works before giving us the framework, because homebrew creations can start to quickly fall outside of numbers expectations and provide less useful information from groups that are doing custom campaigns and one shots since that information would be useful in its own right otherwise.

For the record, I don't believe DocMcJansen got his books a week ago.

I believe him 100%. Pictures of the book have been posted on Facebook since Saturday, July 21. Also, after news broke on Facebook that the shop in question was selling early I actually submitted a test order to see if the really did, and I got the book myself last Tuesday.

I can't get the bestiary to open it downloads the file, but when I go to open it says it can't be opened and the file shows that it empty. Am I the only one here who is having this problem, and what should I do?

Happened to a few of us. They are aware and working on the issue.

Hey Eric! I've gone in and poked this download and it should now be behaving. Though you might need to click "Problems downloading this file? Click here." to reprocess your download.
