Not sure what you’re referring to...?
This. Amazon seems to have really dropped the ball with the shipping of physical copies, so anyone who ordered directly through Paizo is probably going to get theirs late. Orders from Amazon or other retailers are fine though. The whole reason Paizo had Amazon handle their shipping was basically to avoid this kind of thing happening, but here it is.
Yeah, that's disappointing. Clearly someone at Amazon screwed the pooch.

It looks like I might have gotten lucky. I looked up my tracking number and it showed that my stuff was sent off on July 31st with an expected arrivl date of tomorrow.

I did order some other items off of Amazon due for the same day so that may have helped? Or it could be that I pre-ordered through Amazon originally.

These forums are currently a little wonky though, for example, the bottom ribbon is covering up the reply section (So I'm actually typing this without being able to see what I am actually typing. Hopefully that will not be a problem when the downloads come tomorrow.

I'm going to make some cocoa and popcorn, recline the chair and read the playtest book when the time comes: I want a front row seat for the fun. That way I have something to do while I wait for the PDF's to download and/or someone to use a fire extinguisher on the server.

I do not mind getting my printed copy later. I just hate that there were early shipments and thus early leaks

I hope I will get the pdf in a few hours

That said, subcontracting part of the site's functionalities does not by itself explains the site going down, not the lesser version currently running. I guess Paizo outsources this kind of IT project and apparently they have not yet found the good IT company to do it

Which by itself is worrying. In today's digital economy having your users/customers suffer from IT regression is bad

Yeah, Amazon orders seem unaffected. It's orders directly through Paizo that have the issue. I think they're handled by different divisions. Paizo contracted shipping out to Amazon for the playtest to ensure copies get delivered as close to release date as possible. I think that usually this is the best option to ensure a good release. But clearly things aren't going to plan.

I hope Paizo gets its money back

Regarding the site, I seem to remember that after the first major Humble Bundle, they made some significant improvements to the website. The second Humble Bundle had little to no problems as I recall.

Even with the problems they had, it wasn't really the site crashing, or even a download bottleneck - as I recall it was the process that personalizes the PDF's that was lagging behind - I believe that is where most the improvements were made.

Thanks for the reference - I had heard about AFS’ blunder, but “Amazon crapped the bed” was kind of general and had me scratching my head. :-)

9am eastern time, so about 2 hours from now.

In 2 hours. I wouldn't expect you to see it on the website yet.

1.5 hours to meltdown

I think some of us might have our melt down before the playtest PDF even goes live.

Well that was surprisingly painless. Well done Paizo! Better luck next time, Pugwampi.

My internet isn't even that good...

I have it! Downloaded and ready to read

Yep, took about a minute to personalize it/package it, and now it's downloading at a decent clip.

Scarab Sages

well, I was wrong. No server meltdown. I succesfully downloaded all PDF documents in a zipped bundle in about 30 seconds.

Agreed; I was also wrong. That was legitimately the first big release I can remember which didn't cause the website to take a dump.

Yep. Very pleasantly surprised at how easy and painless it was. Download was a little slow for such a small file, but that is very tolerable for a mass download in the first hour, so very good job all around.

I had the files downloaded by 6:02 AM Pacific time. Well done Paizo.

I think you might misunderstand what's going on here. AWS—Amazon Web Services—is a cloud-based hosting and technology provider. Basically, a set of tools and a platform to run them on. Paizo's tech team is still fully responsible for design and development of the website, the watermarker, the download process, and so on. They're just running on AWS servers all over the world.

Saying we're "outsourcing" the website because we've deployed something on AWS would be like saying that you're "outsourcing" something to Microsoft just because you're using Microsoft Word to write it.
