Thoughts on 2nd edition

Prerelease Discussion

My first thought was of course, "OH %^&%!!! Everything I bought to date for pathfinder just became scrap paper..."

So I guess my first question is how much of my existing THOUSANDS of dollars invested in pathfinder are now worthless? Should I even be buying pathfinder at this point if its all going to become obsolete?

Will Pathfinder 1E be supported or will it become D&D 4th edition, i.e. non existent?

Will any of the existing material be usable in 2nd edition? Maps obviously yes, but what about Modules? Adventure Paths? Rule Books?

I'd like some kind of clarification as to weather this is a modification of 1st with existing material still relevant or a complete replacement rendering everything we've bought to date obsolete?

The Second thought was "Well, I guess there's no better time to try D&D 5th then now..."

If I have to invest in a new system and learn a new system that isn't compatible with all of my existing pathfinder stuff, what possible incentive is there to NOT switch to D&D?

Then of course there's Hero Labs, did that just become another obsolete investment?

lastly - whats the best way to sell a bunch of pathfinder 1st edition stuff?

Often when a game switches editions, they stop making the old stuff. Its just common sense. The world stuff and fluff will still be usable, but t 10 years old of a system that is now 18 years old, its well past time for a new edition.

Sell it in a big bundle at a very reasonable price. Just gotta do inventory. Should probably understand that it's gonna be a lot less valuable come 2019.

Pathfinder 1 is not dead and it never will unless 2 is literally perfect. I'd keep every book.

pretty sure they all said that they have no plans to stop selling pdfs of the current rules and books.

Just judging by what paizo is as a company (not backed by a huge corporation). I don't expect them to just stop making new things because of this new edition. They probably want some degree of backwards compatibility, as they have put in a decades worth of work so far.

It sounds like a lot of stuff will be pretty similar, and the rest we can probably convert with a little work. And who knows, maybe they'll explore new avenues to update PF1 material. 5e's "Unearthed Arcana" come to mind as a solution.

Liberty's Edge

I'm not even going to consider selling my favorite system before I start running into trouble finding games, which is likely at least 2 years off. For all I know, I've been hit by a bus by that time, so I'm not worrying about it now. From now through 2019 I'm sure I'll be able to find 1e games and I'll have fun in them, and quite possibly beyond that. *If* that stops being the case, *then* I'll start thinking about selling.

In addition, they said

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

They don't plan to release Campaign Setting books, same way they never re-released 3.5 campaign setting books <_< So 1e setting books should be usable with 2e and other way around.

2ed had to happen..... the game is in need of a trim. And after 10 years I am sure there are a lot of "If we could start all over we would....." stuff floating around Paizo HQ

Depends. Do you need a constant supply of new official material to be able to play Pathfinder 1e?

My guess: It will not receive significant official support, but there will be 3PP products.

Based on what we've seen so far, the changes are significant enough that it will be some effort to convert things between the two systems.

Some possible incentives: You prefer PF1e to D&D. You like Paizo's adventures more than D&D 5e adventures. You want to wait and see if you like Pf2e better than D&D. Your friends don't want to switch to D&D.

@Matthew

The question isn't as much needing new material to continue with 1e but rather should I invest in 2e to REPLACE 1e if it means giving up all of my 1e stuff?

If the changes are significant enough then the game is no longer pathfinder, but some other game set in the pathfinder universe. There are a lot of other FRPG's out there, D&D for one, which could be set in the pathfinder universe if the DM wanted. Why gamble on investing in this new system over the others?

On your last point, preferring pf1e to D&D is irrelevant if pf2e is a different game. If not this is a moot discussion because cross compatibility should be possible if its the "same" game with more polished rules.

I used D&D as an easily recognizable and popular alternative but there are currently a lot of FRPG's out there, FATE, Genesys, etc.

I guess my question really is if I need to start over, why would I stick to a "new" pathfinder that's likely to just be an updated retread of what I've already paid for and feel like I'm just buying the same stuff in a newer format vs. trying into something completely new and spending money on that instead and just stick with 1e?

I'm looking at it from a limited budget why buy more of the "same" vs. something completely new?

You've got more than a year to decide whether or not you will keep playing PF1.

My plan:
Keep playing PF1 for the next 17 months (more than a year!)
Playtest PF2 with all the free material, at home
Playtest PF2 at a con or two
Playtest PF2 with all my old PF1 adventures

When the new Core Rulebook comes out, probably buy it.
Play a few times using the PF2 rules.

Decide in about two years, whether or not I want to switch completely to PF2, or just use it as an "unchained" addendum.

At home, I might cherry pick some of the changes and incorporate them into my PF1 games.
Or maybe I'll just stick to PF1.
Or maybe I'll switch to PF2, but incorporate stuff from PF1 until new material is ready that replaces it.

It looks to me like I've got 2 or 3 years before I have to buy anything new except the Core Rulebook.
