I need some Hunter help. I've been away from pathfinder for years.

Advice

Joining a new party and everyone is pretty much ranged characters. Couple arcane caster's, ranged rogue and archer fighter. Might also have a cleric too.

I kinda settled on Hunter. I think I want a cheetah or mountain lion as a pet. Or maybe a orangutan primate. Not sure on how to stat those pets up though.

We rolled scores and mine are 18 16 15 14 13 12. All before racial mods. I'm not sure of what race to get. I was leaning towards half orc. I want a race that will allow me to boost strength though. Also considered Lizard man.

I could use a little help on traits, feats and spells. Anything Paizo is allowed. This campaign will reach 20th level most likely.

The Exchange

I think you want to get an axebeak/T-rex/Ankylosaurus(stun ability) for a pet. To do the reach, mounted thing. Your stats are fine, if possible you could put the 14 into wis, 13 into int.

Then do the following:

Half Orc hunter:

Level 1 feat:Combat reflexes
Level 2 hunter bonus feat: Outflank
Level 3 feat:Power attack
Level 3 teamwork feat: Paired opportunist
Level 5 feat:Combat Expertise
Level 6 teamwork feat: Pack Flanking
Level 7 feat: Improved trip
Level 9 feat: Greater trip
Level 9 teamwork feat:Shake it off
Level 11 feat: Improved critical(whatever reach weapon - best is Fauchard - but no way to get proficiency for it).
Level 12 teamwork feat: Sieze the moment

Traits: Reactionary, Fates Favored (for more saves)

Take sacred tattoo alternate racial trait.

Beyond level 13 figure out the feats yourself.

Animal companion:
Level 1 feat:Combat reflexes
Level 2 feat: Power attack
Level 5 feat: Narrow frame
Level 8 feat: Iron will?
Level 10 feat: Greater Iron will

Bonus teamwork feats: Paired Opportunists, Pack Flanking, Shake it off, Sieze the moment

STR 18, Dex 14, Con 16, int 13, Wis 15, Cha 12

Go Human and put +2 in STR.

Feats:
1: Combat expertise (Pre-req), Pack Flanking
2: Out Flank
3:Power Attack, Tw- Paired Opportunists
5: Combat Reflexes
6 TW: Broken wing Gambit
7: Iron Will
9: Dirty Fighting (or improved combat maneuver) TW: Coordinated Maneuvers
11: Improved Critical - Reach Weapon
12 TW seize the Moment

You will want 5 points in bluff Skill. Pre-req for Broken wing gambit.

You going to want to use a reach weapon and having a Animal that has some reach is nice for more board control. Look for something with grab or trip for extra credit. Buy potions of enlarge person as they are dirt cheap.

You can get profiency with a Fauchard via a cheap cracked white pryimid ioun stone before Level 11. Best reach/trip weapon in game with a 18-20. (15-20) improved critical.

Trait wise I like:
Carefully hidden (human): +1 will Saves
Transmuter (magic): +1 CL on all Transmutation spells and 1/day extended Cat's Grace.

Most your spells will be transmutation buffs most likely and your belt will be + STR (maybe con). So you can really use cat's grace well.

As for magic items:
Lesser Extend rods
Pages of spell knowledge
Big 6 items
Level 1 wands like cure light wounds, longstrider.

1500gp ioun Stone will let you treat it as a martial weapon.

A couple other things. Consider a fortuitous weapon(for extra aoo -5), menacing amulet on your mount, and escape route team work feat ( never provoke aoo).

The main thing for a melee Hunter is getting Pack Flanking asap. It's really hard to go wrong after that. Paired Opportunists, Broken Wing Gambit, Trip or Dirty Trick stuff, Improved Spell Sharing, Coordinated Charge, etc are all icing on the cake.

I think I'm going to go Human with 20 STR. Grabbing Combat Expertise & Pack Flanking at 1st level. Then at 2nd getting Outflank, 3rd grabbing Paired Opportunist & Combat Reflexes. Broken Wing Gambit will probably be next.

Can't decide if later on I'll dip into Sacred Huntsmaster Inquisitor or not.

Is there a more consolidated listing of Team Work feats? The one listing on d20srd.com doesn't show all of them. I know it doesn't show Swarm Strike or Swarm Scatter or Ferocious Loyalty. This makes me think I'm not seeing all there is available to me.

They're on the d20pfsrd site, they're just not linked on the teamwork feats page. You can use the search function on the top right - type teamwork, press Enter/Return, then click on Feats - to pick all the teamwork feats up.

No dip is recommended.

The best dip imho is wild child Brawler because martial flexibility can give you those situational teamwork feats and is full BaB with a companion level.

Inquisitor will lower your BaB.

Here is a really good breakdown of the hunter/pet teamwork framework for a couple of basic character styles and a description of how they play out for the first like 9 levels

Yeah that write up is really good. Thanks.

Thanks. I did look at that class and thought how cool it was for a dip but it never occurred to me that martial flexibility would boost my teamwork feat features. I had it ingrained in my head that I could snag a combat feat for a bit. Forgot that most teamwork ones are also combat feats.

Remember that you can swap your last Teamwork feat around as well, which is often overlooked.

Don't listen to these suggestions, get Pack Flanking at level 3. Going by guide colors that feat is brightest blue. Its so damn good there is no reason NOT to build for it, since Pack Flanking means you do not need to actually flank around your target (which is sometimes impossible) and it means you are getting a CONSTANT +4 to hit from Outflank at level 2. If you plan on mounting your Animal Companion then it is even better, but fighting side by side isn't bad.

I prefer mounted combat not only because it makes Pack Flanking a constant effect but it also allows you to use share spells at any given time.

The best dip for Hunter is anything with full BAB, and dips are great for the hunter since you can effectively dip for free. Why for free? Because Hunter 16-20 is trash in comparison to other classes, the capstone sucks, those abilities suck, and you lose nothing from dipping into another class for four levels thanks to Boon Companion. My suggestion is 4 levels of Barbarian for the 4th level rage power to make your mount rage along side you.

Other good dips include Fighter, Slayer, UC Monk, Brawler, and Cavalier/Samurai archetypes that give up their mount. In regards to prestiege classes there are probably a bunch but Mammouth Rider comes immediately to mind. Otherwise any full BAB Prestige you can reasonably qualify for is great.

PS: You can take Ranger Skirmisher archetype abilities instead of teaching your Animal Companion tricks. Some of them are neat, others not so much, and they have limited uses per day so choose wisely.

Prestige classes to consider as 4 level dips:

Prestige:

Horizon Walker
Stalwart Defender
Anchorite (Maybe more than 4 levels)
Chevalier
Crimson Templar
Daredevil
Evangelist (Maybe more than 4 levels)
Furious Guardian
Heritor Knight
Lantern Bearer
Liberator
Living Monolith
Low Templar
Mammoth Rider
Sentinel
Student of War
Sunseeker

I advise against begining with an ability score of 18 (+2 for being human) unless you roll for ability scores. If you are doing point buy, then you are missing out on raising other ability scores. How far do you expect the campaign to go? Think about how many free ability score points you will get. If the number is odd, then I strongly suggest making your starting Strength score an odd number as well. This will give you some point buy to spread around. If the number is even, well I would still advise against buying an 18. I don't know what your group is like so maybe I'm wrong, but I find that well rounded characters live longer.

-If spellcasting will be secondary to combat then you can start with a Wis 12-14. By the time you are casting higher level spells you will hopefully have access to a magic item to raise it.

-Do not neglect Con! I have seen many damage builds fail because they left a 10 in Con and ended up dying in some way that should have been avoidable. I also recommend 12-14 for Con.

-I am guessing that Dex is not a priority, but it affects many things. AC, CMC, Reflex saves, initiative, ranged attacks, and several skills. Maybe a 12?

-You may have dumped Cha in order to gain some extra points but be cautious. At low level you will fail some Handle Animal checks during combat and not have your companion's help that round. Over three levels my current hunter has failed several checks with a bad roll. Your GM might ignore use of this skill. If so, then never mind.

We all rolled for the ability scores. My lowest number is 12.

Anyone know if the unchained monk can have archetypes? If so which ones?
