[CoC] Answering the Call of Cthulhu

Recruitment

Dark Archive

Lo, I fear the night will take me. Since I have started to read the Keeper's Grimoire, my mind has opened up in new and terrible ways. The night terrors have become more frequent and erratic. My poor wife has left, unable to withstand the nightly violence of my slumber and ritualistic calling in slobbering tongue to the one known as Cthulhu.

Sleep has come less and less each day. The eves blend together, time passing as I delve deeper into that ancient tome. I fear my, nay, any human mind can comprehend the knowledge that lies within those pages and remain sane. But I feel compelled to do so, otherwise the Ring returns. I can sense it watching me from the shadows, long and dark. It waits for me to rest. The Ring awaits, everlasting. And with it, death.

I must share this knowledge. Share it with others so that the world will know that I am not insane. To provide a warning that there are horrible terrors affronting mankind from its edges and below. I will gather a group of investigators. Stout, hardy folk of sound mind and body to explore and relay this message.

First, I will need to interview them. Understand their story and their motives in this world. I shall send forth an open call. Once a cadre has been selected, I shall pull back the veil so that they may see the under-known that awaits us all. I hope that they do not go insane from cosmic terrors that they bear witness to.

I must tarry now, for there it is again. Rising from the black, the Ring...

Intrepid Investigators Only:

Roll Sanity Check!

Greetings. This is a recruitment for a 7th edition Call of Cthulhu game. There are only a few changes from 6th edition with easy work arounds. Here are some Quick Start Rules and Character Sheets for those that do not own a Keeper's or Investigator's Guide. If either of the later two books interest you, I would be happy to sell them to you through Amazon or Paypal.

I plan on running only one scenario at this time. If the party works well together and I feel up to it, we may continue on. The scenario should take 3 to 6 months depending on posting rate of the players. Therefore if you want to try out a CoC game, this would be a good time to give it a spin. I will be looking for 3 to 6 investigators.

As to which scenario I will run, I will require some feedback from interested parties. Please post your answers below.

1) Have you read or played through any of the 7th edition scenarios CoC has put out so far? Which ones if you know the name of them or at least an outline of what took place in game.

2) Would you rather play somebody who is associated with Arkham University or with the Mob. Please list in order which one you would prefer and what type of character. Remember, not everybody associated with Arkham needs to be students or teachers and not all those associated with the mob needs to be mobsters.

This game will be set in the 1920's. Combat may occur but is not the driving force of most CoC games.

While I invite those who have never played CoC, this would not be considered an "intro" game. The system is pretty simple but I will be happy to help along the way.

Character creation rules will be given after I decided on what scenario I plan on running from responses.

Please be aware that this will be an investigative game. The investigators will need to drive it. I am more than happy to reciprocate what I receive from the team. Therefore the investigators will need to be able to post daily, more is better. The investigators may want to keep track of clues provided. Either through a Google Drive sheet which I can post on the header or I can tag on the Campaign Info tab if the PCs think its important. At the very least, use the search engine for the campaign. I don't want to have to keep prompting the party as to what they want to do next.

I can't wait to field any questions from interested parties. Please list them here or PM me.

This game is sponsored by Grizzly Games: www.amazon.com/shops/grizzlygames

I've played a fair amount of sixth, but no 7th. It seemed pointless to upgrade when my group has three of the core rules lying around for 6th. Hopefully, I don't screw things up too badly.

I have read and played through a few 6th Edition Scenarios, and played through some of the earlier ones too. Anything that is new to 7th will be completely new to me.

Given the choice, I prefer working with Arkham more than the Mob.

So...we simply assign the stats we want, and only roll for Luck? And assign 8 Skills for jobs, and then select four personal interest ones to raise by 20%? Interesting. Less rolling is nice, given the whole thing.

OK, two questions - are characters allowed to be connected or related? My wife and I had a couple of character ideas we might want to try out, if my wife isn't busy.

Secondly, are there more detailed rules for equipment in the main books? I tend to like to have various oddities of gear around, so I might have to acquire the book with it in.

I'm running a Trail of Cthulhu game on the boards here and I've enjoyed what I've played of 7th edition, so I'm interested.

I have run the 7th edition intro adventure, the one set in Vermont, and I've read through the other more open scenario in the same book. I own the other 7th edition stuff but haven't played it.

I'm a little more interested in playing an Arkham character than a mob character, though both have their possibilities. Maybe a journalism student or an arts major would be fun.

Dark Archive

I'd be interested, not really played 7th properly (a short lived forum game) have played a fair bit of prior editions, I do have 7th in PDF though.

More interested in Arkham University. Can post daily through the week, though not always on weekends, though fair warning I'm in the UK/GMT, so I generally post at off times compared to most US-timezoney folks.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

Interest here as well. I've got 7th edition, but haven't played yet. I too would be more interested in the Arkham route.

Like Spinningdice, I can usually post at least once a day, thought sometimes the hours might be odd as I travel a lot for work. I also might experience slowdown on weekends.

Actually I realise I already have a character written up from the previous short lived adventure. I'll probably re-use this profile and adjust her to fit the 1920s (originally designed for a Victorian game), once we have some actual creation guidelines.

NB: This is spinningdice.

Dark Archive

Let me see if I can answer your questions, Jon.

Some of the major differences between 6th & 7th is as following:

* Characteristics are now on a percentage scale.
* Combat Skills have been consolidated, where as other skills have been expanded on.
* Skill Modifiers have been moved from bonus/penalty percentages to bonus/penalty die.
* Pushing Skill Rolls: New mechanic that I may use more in other RPGs too. It keeps the story moving while adding to the drama.

The Quick Start Rules provide a simple method of character creation without randomization of dice rolls. The books provide more detailed methods of character creation.

Quote:
Are characters allowed to be connected or related?

Of course! Once the scenario has been selected, I will try to provide some other NPCs you may know too depending on occupation.

Quote:
Are there more detailed rules for equipment in the main books?

I don't have a 6th edition rule book to compare what "more" would be. I would say that the Investigator's Guide has more detail than the Keeper's Guide.

The Keeper's Guide (KG) is more akin to the Core book of previous CoC editions. It has Equipment Lists and prices. There is a weapons table with a brief description of each weapon. Weirdly enough the longest descriptions belong to the chainsaw and shotgun. =vD

The Investigator's Guide (IG) lists more items and prices (Worsted Wool Dress Suit $17.95, Complete Diving Suit $1,200!) The IG gives a more detail to certain firearms and common vehicles that could be used. There are two pages then dedicated to illumination devices, telescope/binoculars, and video/audio recording devices. There is an interesting note about how dangerous photography could be in the 1920s due to the flash-powder.

Can I join?

1.No, I have never played any of the scenarios for CoC. However, I have played a bit of a homebrew adventure, if that counts for anything?

2.I would rather be involved with the mod. I'd probably play someone who either illegally sells alcohol, if that works?
I can probably post once per day, though that might decrease from time to time.

Thank you. Sorry for the slow response, I had to make a run to my home town.

'More' in Sixth Edition was a variety of details on purchases. Instead of categories of gun, there are a variety of different weapons, including military ordinance. Gives ideas on how much cars and homes might costs, even clothing of various kinds.

And yes, under usual circumstances I can post once - or more - a day. It'll depend on exactly when the bulk of posting occurs.

There are about 5 pages of weapon tables in the 7th ed book. If that helps. Picking a category at random there are 12 different rifles (though that is across all eras). 3 pages of price lists for 1920s.

There is also an entire chapter on chases, including some simple vehicle stats.

Non-weapon/vehicle gear has never really had stats or much description in CoC as far as I'm aware, it just does whatever it does for the most part. For just prices it's not that difficult to google or image search for 1920s catalogues.

Read and own a multitude of books, but have only briefly played 7th edition in a play by post that died too soon.

I would prefer to play someone associated with the University. Perhaps a rich widow who lost her husband under mysterious circumstances and makes regular donations to the school in addition to loaning out various rare and obscure books to the schools library.

I am usually able to post more than once a day.

Dark Archive

I hope that answers your question Jon. Supplements books like Pulp Cthulhu or Achtung! Cthulhu may have more gear detail. Those are books that outline CoC settings during the 30's and 40's with the later having an emphasis on WW II (and those books are beautiful).

Unless there is a huge up-swell in those wanting to be mobster/bootleggers, I'm going to go ahead and layout the character creation guidelines for those interested in a game composed of characters associated with Miskatonic University. A Private Investigator could also be hired by MU too.

Our story starts in the fall of 1926 in Arkham, Mass.

Characteristics can be generated by the method outlined in the Quick Start rules or by those in the KG/IG. If you roll dice, you have to keep the rolls.

Skills can be generated by the method outlined in the Quick Start rules or by the method options listed in the KG/IG. If you would like some assistance as to what skills would be considered "Occupational" for the occupation you selected, just let me know.

Luck will be rolled.

Backstory can be brief. A line or two that would fill out each section on the back page of the character sheet. Include something about your parents. The backstory should give you guidance for a given situations and hook I can use to pull you into the story more. I will list some names if you want to tie yourself to one of the personae in the the story.

* Dr. Henry Roades: associate professor of archaeology from Miskatonic
* Abigail Roades: wife to Henry, assistant on his expeditions
* Prof Ernest McTavish, head of the Department of Archaeology at Miskatonic.

Gear: I am hoping you carry what would be reasonable for the mystery provided and that is within your credit rating. This should go without saying, but I'm going to say it now so that its out of the way. If your character has a gun, you CANNOT use it in an intimidating manner again another character. Talk it out peeps or settle it out in a thumb war. =v)

Gameplay: If a character is going to say something, type out what he says. Be descriptive of your actions. Depending how you describe something, that roll may obtain a bonus/penalty die or allow yourself an opening to push a roll if the outcome is a failure. We want to avoid brief third-person remarks.

I am striving to convey a setting of horror and suspense. That is hard to perform through PbP and more difficult to achieve if there are OOC remarks are peppered about. If you know something, but your character wouldn't, please keep it to yourself. If spoilers are used, please only read them if they apply to you (your name, roll failure or if you succeed at a roll).

I think that is everything. If there are any questions, please list them below.

Would we be students or faculty at Miskatonic? I'll roll my stats and see what comes to mind.

Strength: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4) = 12 x5= 60
Constitution: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3) = 8 x5= 40
Size: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13 x5= 65
Dexterity: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3) = 11 x5= 55
Appearance: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 5) = 12 x5= 60
Intelligence: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 2) + 6 = 10 x5=50
Power: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 3) = 14 x5= 70
Education: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 1) + 6 = 13 x5= 65
Luck: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1) = 7 x5= 35

My education puts me between high school and college graduate, so my character could work as a hired PI or other outside assistant or as an undergrad.

Dark Archive

You can be students, faculty, alumni, grounds keeper Willy. Somebody who has a vested interest in helping the University and its staff.

Dark Archive

55 Strength: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5) = 11
65 Constitution: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3) = 13
45 Size: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9
40 Dexterity: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) = 8
50 Appearance: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3) = 10
55 Intelligence: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11
75 Power: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 4) = 15
75 Education: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 3) + 6 = 15
40 Luck: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2) = 8

Educated, Wilful and Tough, but small, clumsy and unlucky.

I think that probably drops me neatly into the University student education level.
US Universities are 4 years usually, yes? So probably a 3rd/4th year student (unless there are a few students, in which case might want us to be in the same class), which puts me at about 21.

Are we using the Age changes from p32 KG? If so that gives me an EDU improvement check Check: 1d100 ⇒ 49, ah well.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I'll jump on this later today... and of course all real "Role Players" roll stats when given the opportunity :-).

Dark Archive

Hmm, filled out via form fillable sheet, but wouldn't display when sharing from google, copied and pasted for now
Eloise Cartwright, Psychology Student

My character will be Harrison Finch, Private Eye. A Jewish kid from Brooklyn, he came to Miskatonic U for undergrad before planning to enroll in law school but a bad case of tuberculosis in his junior year sent him to a sanitarium for a long time and wiped out his tuition money and savings. His grades weren't good enough to get him a scholarship, but he's too stubborn to go home so he got a PI license and started doing legwork. Harry hates working for law firms, though, since he feels like everyone looks down on him for not finishing school so he has to go further afield to build his "practice" as he calls it. Hence, he started working for Prof. McTavish in tracking down the legal footprints of various museum donations and doing the legwork that the Archaeology department doesn't want to bother with. In his heart of hearts, he just loved being in college and wishes he could go back.

EDU improvement roll: 1d100 ⇒ 48

That's right. Best AD&D Mage I had 17 in Int, 15 in Wis, then single digits in everything else. She had to drop her quarter staff just to move around.

Age changes as outlined in the KG & IG are a go if you have those books.

I fear what I might get if I rolled, so my stats will be done in the style mentioned in the Quick Start rules.

Strength - 50
Constitution - 50
Power - 60
Dexterity - 50
Appearance - 60
Size - 40
Intelligance - 80
Education - 70

Still gotta roll for luck though, so:
Luck 3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5) = 17 x5 = 85

Phaedra is an Alumni of Miskatonic University who had majored in literature and theology. Though only in her late 20s, Phaedra is already a widow. Her husband disappeared during an archeology expedition and was presumed dead.

Phaedra currently works in the main library at Miskatonic and retains hope that her husband might one day return. In her free time, she is often seen down in the basements of the University where the archeological finds are kept, looking over the last things that her husband had sent back, searching for any clue as to where he may be now.

Boy it's going to take some imagination to come up with a concept for this sickly, ugly little guy. Well at least he's getting an education, though he must have used his luck to guess the test answers. :-)

Dark Archive

Obviously you're affected by facial scarring from a childhood disease, which has left its toll on your health, your ill health had you kept indoors so you pursued your studies.

Perhaps you had Polio as a child?

Dark Archive

I was going to add on to the Polio comment that your character could be wheelchair-bound, but it looks like how the characters fall, your Move is actually a 9!

Scarlet fever which led to childhood rheumatoid arthritis. Measles. Oh, maybe an albino? Or just go with the classic axe to the face =v)

Dark Archive

So it looks like we have:

Phaedra Alexandria Covington, Librarian
Harrison Finch, Private Eye
Eloise Cartwright, Psychology Student
Scranford, TBA

Can't get a more classic CoC group than that =v)

Jon will you and your wife be joining us?

In either case, can everybody finish up their investigators by week's end? That would be great. I will start our story Sunday/Monday.

I will have an alias up very soon.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

Will do.

I present Harry Klein, Private Eye and former law student.

I should have enough free time tomorrow to get my character finished up.

I do like the classic grouping we have going on. :)

Are we still allowed to play mob members? Thanks! :)

Sorry, life has been more exciting that I would like. I'll talk to my wife tomorrow about all the details. I plan on joining, certainly.

Dark Archive

You may, Ultrageek.

I may have a separate introduction/plot for mob/bootleggers. If its just you, I'll run the intro over PM until you meet up with the group. I am debating this option however.

Some names to help flesh out mob characters backstory.

Declan McBride, Boston bootlegger
Damien Carmody, rival enforcer
Dick Sprouston, Arkham policeman
or he may know the Roades personally in a positive manner.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I'm thinking about a WWI Veteran medic, who was exposed to gas which disfigured him and left him with poor constitution. Now just have to figure out what he's doing at the University.

Dark Archive

He and Henry Roades are friends from being in the Great War together.

And I have decided not to run the bootlegging side plot. Thank you for your interest UltraGeek.

My character sheet is finished. Just having a bit of an issue making it viewable on my character sheet.

I've played 6th edition on several occasions, but not 7th. Like most of the others, Arkham University is more interesting though it would not be hard to change her family to be connected to the mob.

I present for consideration Adelaide Caelia Ethelyn Zoraida Liviana Gratian, debutante second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gratian, local businessman and large donator to local museums, art galleries, and Miskatonic University.

As the second child, as well as a girl, Adelaide's education was a second consideration to her ability to win a well-connected spouse to bolster family fortune. Thus far, much to her family's concern, she seems quite content with just the company of her maid whom Miss Gratian calls Katsie who has also repeatedly had to act as a bodyguard for the reckless young woman.

Her family, like many of her type, enjoy hunting casually. She has access to a shotgun but far prefers to talk and charm her way out of any situation. Or not to be in the situation at all when it comes to things like another dinner party. So many more interesting things to find in Arkham than how young Master Garrett likes his drink...

She is being pushed to have her full debut later this season, but until then her family is rather busy with other business matters which allows her slightly more freedom for her - as her family puts it - 'fanciful pursuits'. She is often found, maid in tow, around the University and town trying to find something worthwhile to keep her attention.

History:
Katherine was born to a single mother whose husband was lost during the Spanish-American War, and had moved to Arkham in an effort to move on. Of course, there was a little more to the story. Her father was one of the Buafflo Soldiers, a black serviceman. Her mother was white.

Given the scandal, the family had fled, but when Katherine's father passed away her mother was given the opportunity to re-write history.

Between the widow's pension they claimed and the wages she earned through being a school mistress, allowed them to live comfortably. it also allowed Katherine a surprisingly complete education.

Eventually, Katherine joined the household of Miss Adelaide Gratian. To better serve as her mistress needed, Katherine was given some...unusual training for a lady's maid, but useful. Miss Gratian quickly discovered the little secret of Katherine's heritage, but didn't care in the slightest.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I plan on my character being a forensic surgeon as he wouldn't have the bedside manager to be a doctor. If anyone would like to readjust their skills he will have a lot of medicine and science. If not I'll load up on the sciences and keep the medicine less.

Dark Archive

May shuffle down some medical skills a little, if we have an actual doctor, though a backup is always useful.

I respectfully withdraw from this campaign, even though I have'nt submitted a character :)

Dark Archive

On my end, this adventure isn't coming together like I thought it would be. I want to make sure the game starts off right and has good legs.

I don't know what my time table will be. I'll send PMs once I'm ready to roll.

Until then.

Well...poop. Hope things come together for you.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I have the character finished... just need to type it into a profile. Should be able to finish up soon. I've got 70 in medicine right now, but if the others that spent a lot on medicine don't want to redistribute, let me know, and I'll redistribute to the sciences. After all my character works on things already dead, so he could be inexperienced in live surgery / treatment.
