I am Interested in Playing in a Black Crusade / Only War / DeathWatch PBP

Recruitment

Dark Archive

Can someone please take up the challenge and GM it?

I might, if I have the time, especially Only War or Black Crusade.

I'd certainly be in as well if it was Only war.

Dark Archive

still waiting for that great person who's gonna make my wish come true.

Eh...I have a solid framework for an Only War campaign whose game fell through after only a few sessions, but it's pretty specifically geared towards the players' regiment (248th Mintari Myrmidons; urban warfare grenadier regiment). Also have three outlines for campaigns in the Jericho reach--one each in the Acheros, Canis, and Orpheus Salients.

Problem is, I don't think I have the time to commit to GMing.

Dark Archive

I would recommend the formation of a stormtrooper unit.

Dark Archive

i am already gming 3 40k pbps give me a chance to play in one.

Im in all 3 of them =^^=

Dark Archive

Magos Drake, kindly take note of the combat.

I too would love to play a WH40k game and not just GM.

Radavel, you were in the game with Brother Del that I've took over and been GMing for a few years, you could bring him back if you're interested. Already have 6 marines, but I could figure out a way to insert you if you're really interested. My heart goes out to all the GMs that dont have a game themselves...me included. I noticed your RT game Radavel, but you already had 10 pcs when I was reading and considering joining, figured that you'd have enough on your plate with that many. If you can handle 10, I think I should be able to add you as a 7th. An Apothecary would be nice, team is without one and I have just thought of a good entry point for you. PM me if you'd like to join.

Otherwise, hope someone steps up and gives us ol GMs our wish.

Okay, so this is a VERY TENTATIVE question, but who all is interested, and what sort of campaign/regiment are you most interested in? I've been flipping through my notes and I've got all kinds of stuff in here but I cannot stress enough that I make no promises. I'm currently in Europe and all my 40k RPG books are in storage back home, time is a factor, and also I've never actually played in a PBP before (I start my very first in the next week or two, Carrion Crown Pathfinder AP).

So what're people interested in?

Well, for me, an only War campaign.
While I wouldn't mind a slight input in what regiment we'd use, I'm not going to feel bad if it's a completely premade regiment.
I like the idea of an urban campaign, at least to a point.
It can create a nice tension, moving from building from building, making sweeps, shooting into the street and what not.

I'd say that I like the idea of a regiment that can be a little flexible, capable of standing in line at times, but also function as small autonomous groups at others.

I don't want to make too many statements yet, so as to not limit anything.

Never done only war... other than that, other types are fine. Wouldnt mind playing a GK either =^^=

I'm wanting Black Crusade personally, but would happily play Only War

Dark Archive

How about a Stormtrooper outfit? Like in the Blueblood story in Sabbat Crusade....

Black Crusade would be fun, but would play any of the options here.

I'd prefer to GM Only War or Dark Heresy, preferably the former. Here's a work-in-progress document with a bunch of regiments. If anyone sees something they like let me know.

Sample Regiments:
882nd Arkonian Rangers, “Dune Ghosts” (11pts)
Homeworld: Frontier world
Regiment Type: Guerilla
Commander: Phlegmatic
Doctrines: Demolitions, Sharpshooters
Favored Weapons: Sniper Rifle, Missile Launcher
Drawback: The Few
This regiment fights with stealth and sudden, surgical precision, executing ambushes before fading away. They are also experts with explosives, using snares and mines to kill or demoralize enemy troops and counter vehicles. They are equipped with autopistol carbines and silenced stub automatics for short-range fighting, and have a much higher number of snipers than is standard. They achieve fame upon the desert moon Ious in the Karacallia System; first in desert warfare wresting mountain passes, oasis strongpoints, fortresses, and even a Superheavy tank manufactorum from the Severan Dominate rebels; their next assignment was eliminating high-ranking officers & specialists in urban warfare in Ious’ capital city. Finally, they face down seemingly unlimited hordes of Chaos zombies after the Severan rebels were corrupted by a Daemon in service to Tzeentch.

373rd Minmatari Myrmidons (12pts)
Homeworld: Fortress world
Regiment Type: Guerilla
Commander: Choleric
Doctrines: Survivalists [Urban], Chameleoline
Favored Weapons: RPG Launcher, Heavy Bolter
Drawback: Scarred by Loss
Like many Myrmidon regiments, the 373rd specializes in urban warfare against secessionists & rebels, utilizing their skills at stealth to ambush enemy forces, inflicting maximum casualties before withdrawing. They are better suited to assaulting infantry & light vehicles, as they lack the weapons to crack harder targets like command bunkers or heavy armor. Less than three standard years ago the regiment was nearly destroyed by a warband of Eldar raiders; the 373rd lost 70% of its fighting strength in only two days.

Teutonian 204th Crusaders (12pts)
Homeworld: Fortress world
Regiment Type: Siege Regiment
Commander: Sanguine
Doctrines: Anti-Armor, Well-Provisioned
Favored Weapons: RPG Launcher, Lascannon w/gun carriage
Drawback: Regimental Rivalry
The 204th are a proven force of vehicle killers, skilled at digging in and obliterating enemy armor or bunkers with a few well-placed lascannon shots. Infantry fight in support of the weapon crews, using RPGs and heavy stubbers to fend off enemy infantry while the lascannons do their work.

224th Scintillian Fusiliers (12pts)
Homeworld: Hive world
Regiment Type: Grenadiers
Commander: Fixed
Doctrines: Close-Order Drill, Well-Provisioned
Favored Weapons: Plasma Gun, Multilaser w/gun carriage
Drawback: Regimental Rivalry
An old and honored regiment, the 224th specialize in breach-and-clear operations during urban warfare, using grenades, plasma, and underslung shotguns to cleanse the foe from their strongholds, while mobile multilaser teams lay down a withering barrage that can cripple even heavy infantry and light vehicles.

1182nd Death Korps Breachers (12pts)
Homeworld: Penitent*
Regiment Type: Grenadiers
Commander: Choleric
Doctrines: Sappers, Demolitions
Favored Weapons: Flamer, Multimelta
Drawback: Cult of Chivalry
These stoic troops are armed with shotguns and ride into battle in massive Crassus Armored Assault Transports capable of carrying an entire platoon into battle and bristling with heavy bolter sponsons. The soldier of the 1182nd are experienced in storming bunkers, hab blocks, and other claustrophobic battlegrounds, storming in with grenades, shotguns, and flamers to eliminate defenders; additionally, these soldiers are well-versed in finding and removing the explosive traps often employed to defend such sites.

67th Brontian Longknives, “Knife-Dancers” (12pts)
Homeworld: Hive World
Regiment Type: Guerilla
Commander: Choleric
Doctrines: Hardened Fighters, Chameleoline
Favored Weapons: Flamer, Autocannon
Drawback: Regimental Rivalry
These troops are well-rounded combatants, equally capable with their lascarbines or long-bladed combat machetes. They favor ambushes, using their skills at stealth to stalk through the dense terrain of hive cities to close with enemy infantry while the autocannon-armed Sentinels outflank or fire from concealed positions. They are aggressive but not feral, more than willing to fall back in the face of higher-than-expected resistance only to counterattack in another location.

19th Fenksworld Armored Rifles (12pts)
Homeworld: Frontier
Regiment Type: Mechanized
Commander: Phlegmatic
Doctrines: Close-Order Drill, Well-Provisioned
Favored Weapons: Grenade Launcher, Heavy Bolter
Drawback: Regimental Rivalry
While many of the forces tithed from Fenksworld are of poor quality, these troops were professional soldiers drawn from private security forces of the merchant guilds. Originally deployed for convoy escort duties, these soldiers make solid mainline fighters, able to quickly redeploy through rough terrain with their Centaur half-tracks and deliver punishing fire to the enemy. Some of their regimental Centaurs forego their transport role in favor of carrying light howitzers and providing mobile fire support to the infantry.

414th Visian Huskarls (--pts)
Homeworld: Frontier World
Regiment Type: Line Infantry
Commander:
Doctrines: Close-Combat Specialists, Hardened Fighters
Favored Weapons: Flamer & Autocannon
Drawback: Honor Bound

37th Alsacean Chasseurs (11pts)
Homeworld: Hive world
Regiment Type: Mechanized
Commander: Choleric
Doctrines: Well-Provisioned
Favored Weapons: Storm Bolter, Missile Launcher
Hailed from the Republic of Alsacea in the Fineal Sector (the same home system as the Minmatari Myrmidons), these mechanized soldiers are skilled mainline infantry. They are well-accustomed to fighting not only in the vast hive cities where the bulk of their members were raised, but also in hilly and forested terrain as well as small towns, rapidly deploying to excellent firing positions and using their missile launchers to harass hostile armor while the infantry clash.

662nd Bundeslander Jaegers (12pts)
Homeworld: Forge world
Regiment Type: Mechanized
Commander: Fixed
Doctrines: Cyber-Enhanced, Well-Provisioned
Favored Weapons: Meltagun, Autocannon
Drawback: Cloud of Suspicion (Adeptus Arbites)
Hailing from a minor forgeworld called Bunde in the Fineal Sector, the Jaeger regiments are well-equipped soldiers trained in mobile warfare. They tend to be lightly augmented, giving them a surprising degree of versatility (subdermal armor and modified respiratory systems are commonplace) and their ability to keep vehicles functioning is impressive. Their Chimera IFVs tend to carry Hunter-Killer missiles in addition to their multilasers and heavy bolters. However, they have a poor history with the Adeptus Arbites, which has accused them of smuggling xenos tech, though no definitive proof has yet been presented.

774th Harakoni Warhawks (12pts)
Homeworld: Schola Progenium
Regiment Type: Drop Troops
Commander: Fixed
Doctrines: Close-Quarters Battle, Well-Provisioned
Favored Weapons: Storm Bolter, Lascannon
Drawback: Honor Bound
The soldiers of the 774th Warhawks are disciplined combatants, well-armed and well-armored and eager to fight. Given their superior capabilities relative to standard infantry, they are often employed as a sudden knock-out punch, taking the enemy by surprise and capturing or destroying key assets like armored battlegroups, critical infrastructure, or hivetop command complexes. They are currently seconded to Inquisitor Malchior Schoras of the Ordo Valorius on a secretive mission in the Periphery subsector.

23rd Phantine Skyguard, “Blackhawks” 11pts
Homeworld: Schola Progenium
Regiment Type: Drop Troops
Commander: Sanguine
Doctrines: Close-Quarters Battle, Automated Artillery, Demolitionists
Favored Weapons: Melta Gun & Heavy Bolter
Drawbacks: The Few, Cloud of Suspicion
This renowned regiment earned glory in multiple actions against the tau, including a confirmed kill against an Ethereal during an assault on a Vespid hive-colony, fighting against Tarellian mercenaries as the xenos ransacked an Imperial light cruiser, & fighting against tau/auxiliary forces in the ash-forests of Ravacene. As an air assault company they can redeploy rapidly, and they use Tarantula sentry turrets and Goliath self-propelled explosives to fortify beachheads created by infantry—while Valkyries provide close air support.

8th Daru Hunters 12pts
Homeworld: Feudal
Regiment Type: Rough Riders
Commander: Sanguine
Doctrines: Cyber-Enhanced, Hardened Fighters
Favored Weapons: Hunting Lance, Power Spear
Drawbacks: The Few,
The rugged world of Daru boasts forbidding mountain, thick forests, and dangerous beasts; its hardy population lives in walled towns ruled over by a warrior caste, from which the regimental troops are drawn. Unusually, the lords of Daru are allied to a near-heretical cult of Techpriests known as the Forgeborn—these unusual tech-adepts ensure that the Daru nobility and warrior-elite have an unusually high degree of technology, including cybernetics & hunting lance variations. Unfortunately the regiment has little in more than small-arms with which to fight at range, but in close-quarters the Hunters are devastatingly effective, and their Ferrox war-mounts are tough, fast, and vicious.

18th Calderi Hussars (--pts)
Homeworld: Feudal
Regiment Type: Rough Riders
Commander: Melancholic
Doctrines:
Favored Weapons: Hunting Lance, Lascannon
Drawbacks: The Few,
Armed with their long-handled cavalry hammers and hunting lances, the Hussars represent the cream of Calderi military. While most effective in their signature charges, the Hussars are also trained in firing from horseback, using their lascarbines to soften up foes before charging. Their horses are typically barded in flak mesh (all 2). The regiment’s lascannons are mounted on a wheeled carriage pulled into position by horses; the Hussars will use these weapons to destroy APCs or armor that would otherwise stymie a cavalry force.

Maniple Eplison-774 (15pts)
Homeworld: Forge World
Regiment Type: Grenadiers
Commander: Fixed
Doctrines: Cyber-Enhanced, Bonded to the Machine Cult
Favored Weapons: Plasma Gun & Multilaser
Drawbacks:

55th Iberian Rodeleros (--pts)
Homeworld: Feudal
Regiment Type: Light Infantry
Commander:
Doctrines:
Favored Weapons:
Drawbacks:

303rd Alsacean Chevaliers (11pts)
Homeworld: Hive World
Regiment Type: Armored
Commander: Melancholic
Doctrines: Defenders of the Faith,
Favored Weapons:
Drawbacks:
The Hive World of Alsacea remained loyal during the uprisings of 307.M41, her shrines and temples serving to shield her population from the temptations to rebel.

Naval Armsman Company, “Starswords” (17pts)
Homeworld: Voidborn
Regiment Type: Close Assault
Commander: Phlegmatic
Doctrines: Close-Quarters Battle, Demolitionists
Favored Weapons: Meltagun & Multilaser
Drawbacks:

I am intrigued by the first two regiments, the 882nd Arkonian Rangers and the 373rd Minmatari Myrmidons.
They both seem to offer exactly what I look forward to.

Scarab Sages

I'd be interested in a game that involved the "Dune Ghosts" as well.

I am going with Commissar. ;-)

Never played only war. Eager to give it a try

Dark Archive

Perhaps you can enlighten me, but I can only envision Only War played as mostly a 'tactical rpg', almost a mini squad based skirmish-wargame linked together by a narrative. It doesn't seem like this would be conducive to a PBF environment?

Perhaps many RPG's follow this anyway, so I may just be overthinking things.

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

It certainly CAN be, in the same way that some PF or D&D groups only want to kick in the door and beat the monsters bloody. As with most RPGs, you get out of it what you put into it RP-wise.

By way of example: my last group belonged to a feudal-world regiment that helped clear out a genestealer cult; after the regiment was posted there as a garrison while it replenished its losses, and the local Arbites chatted up our regiment's Commissars and basically we got drafted into investigating a xenotech-smuggling ring that some of the other regiments' soldiers were neck deep in. They picked us because we'd just gotten into the city so we could be trusted to not be already involved in the operation. While GMing one of my players started running an under-the-table weapon & armor modification operation, where he'd give customers custom gear in exchange for information, favors, etc. Wound up framing his own Commissar once she got suspicious.

I will say, that unless your regiment is something like long-range recon or does a lot of infiltration/sabotage missions the military-esque vibe can cramp some players' style. You're playing (usually) as members of a trillions-strong military force; there's always someone above you on the totem pole giving you orders, so your characters are usually a little more constraining than your standard high-fantasy adventurer. That can certainly be worked around, but characters who go flying off AWOL on a tangent are not treated gently by the Hammer of the Emperor.

I find that Only War has more rewarding combat the Dark Heresy without sacrificing RP ability (once in a while it's nice to one-up that Daemon with a Lehman Russ); on the other end of the spectrum Deathwatch actively punishes characters for trying to put Skills & Talents into non-combat stuff by making you pay through the nose for them. Also from an RP perspective Astartes are really, really boring.

One small question, do these regiments come with premade equipment lists as well?
Guerilla regiments for example do not start with any armour except for the standard flak vest.

Silver Crusade

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I have not done so, I would be amenable to players putting together the usual 32pt standard kit from the core rulebook

662nd Bundeslander Jaegers and the 37th Alsacean Chasseurs look fun.
I;m up for this.

Warhawks and Blackhawks look interesting.

Gonna join BayouSnowman on warhawks blackhawks thing.

How would one feel about a mixed regiment? Could lead to some interesting IC dynamics.

Silver Crusade

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I'm down with mixed regiments, but I think they make the most sense after a regiment has been reduced by casualties & combined with another unit. That being said, if you wanted to cook up a "combined arms" regiment I'd take a look.

Well, we've got two people who have voiced interested in a mechanized regiment as well as two who showed interested in a guerilla regiment.
Heck, I can sort of see how those two things might work together even.
Mechanized for transport and extra firepower, quickly inserting troops where needed, guerilla for sabotage and quick strikes.

Scarab Sages

I'm way more interested in a single unit game. Mixed units tend to start feeling like task forces and lose the military character of the intended game.

Alright, I'm going to try to get my hands on the books I'm missing. If I can get them I'll GM an Only War PBP; I'll post here before I create a new recruitment thread.

Most likely I'll be cannibalizing one or more of the campaign arcs I'd already written, I'll wait until I see what regiment gets chosen before making a final campaign choice.

No black crusade it seems, only war it is.

Blackhawks sound fun. Don't mind mixing a regiment with another force.

Silver Crusade

Okay, I have acquired my copies of DH Core, OW Core, Hammer of the Emperor, Enemies of the Imperium, and Shield of Humanity, + Deathwatch Core if I decide to set it in the Jericho Reach. I do not have any of my other Deathwatch or Dark Heresy books.

I've never GM'd a PBP so I'll be setting up a recruitment for "Against the Savages" from the back of the Core book to practice with. After that's completed, we can move on to the "real" campaign, whatever it ends up being. I should hopefully have the recruitment thread up in a few days.

Sounds pretty interesting! I think my vote is for a mechanised regiment - from reading the Ciaphus Cain books it seems even pretty ordinary troopers can get into some scrapes...

I can help with GMing advice if you need any, feel free to PM

Could you put a link to "Against the Savages" if your not going to use this one thanks GM
