Mine. Fireball and burbing arc for low level.

Murderous command. Make your enemy fight your other enemy!

Black tentacles is a close second. I really like the visuals, and I really like the combination of battlefield control, direct damage, and grappling.

Spell level? For wizard sorc summoner or arcanist?

Coin Shot. Flavor, power, and unique in a LONG list of spells.

Ok. You can choose 3 spells. I could get reference too.

Low level are very wellcomed.

Dimension Door. It has feats to back it up, flashy style, and while it's crazy useful on it's own, it isn't "travel plot-line neuteringly" good, like Teleport.

Another shout-out for Plane Shift, too. No more efficient way to make a literal turn on the phrase "damn you to hell!" Or to get yourself a nice vacation home in the plane of fire.

But a low-level spell I like? Create Pit. Simple and effective, hysterically so on the supposed bane of spell-casters: Golems.

So... Arcane? Choosing to disregard the diss towards Divine Casters...

Hate to be unoriginal, but 3rd Level Fireball is just so easy-to-use and easily accessible (you get it quickly enough to actually enjoy most of your campaign's duration) that it's typically a strong choice, even if it targets typically the easiest Save. It does fall into the trap of linear growth and isn't as immediately lethal to more powerful threats out there as other Save-or-Suck Spells, but it has a place in my heart for how consistent it is.

I also vote create pit as my third favorite spell. It also combines battlefield control with some direct damage and movement reduction.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The entire create pit line, aqueous orb, geyser, and all summon monster spells. Best battlefield control in the game (glitterdust and stinking cloud ain't bad either. But pound for pound pit spells are awesome at bf control so long as your opponent isn't flying.

I'm going to go with Detect Magic. Then sound burst. If I had to pick a third... Cure light wounds.

Do cure light wound only abiable for divine spellcaster

Bards and witches get it. Probably skalds, too.

Blinding Ray. You can make one opponent save three times or be blinded, or you can make three opponents save or be blinded. It's only one round, but one round is enough.

The runner up is heal because 10HP per level of healing with no roll is just so good and there's a ton of status removal on top of that!

I think I should poset the spell level. There are more than 100 spell and I got confused. Since I play low spell level.

Silver Crusade

My favorite? Prestidigitation. While not powerful in it's own regard, so much fun can be done with this spell and its wide range of "minor effects".

Yup. Bards and skalds share the same list. Heck even if bards didn't get it, skalds would thanks to spell kenning!

But yes all my spells are bard spells. Because bards.

My 3 favorite spells?

Beast Shape 4, since it's the best version. So versatile, so many things you could do with it.

Bestow Curse, especially with a flexible DM (which I'm fortunate enough to have). Also versatile, and can be so mean.

Major Image. Again, versatile and with a bit of creativity, can get you out out of tough spots or even bypass some encounters.

As you can probably tell, I like me some versatility. Sow thought gets an honorable mention.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Summon monster.

I can't get enough of it.

Litany of Sloth -- just do what comes naturally. (Wish they had a specialized version of it for longer duration, though: Litany of Procrastination would fit best.)

On a more serious note, surprised that nobody mentioned the go-to spells for Magi (starting with but not limited to Shocking Grasp.)

Silver Crusade

Radiant Dawn of the Inheritor Burst of Radiance. It's my curseless oracle sorceress's signature spell :3

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Mage's Disjunction by far. All your carefully layered buffs and protections? Gone. Your magic items? Gone. It even has a chance against artifacts. It's a beast of a spell. Since even supernatural effects are described as magical, they get caught in its wake as well. Just reread it. It only works on spells and sla's. :'(

Pick my three favorite spells? Ha. Ha ha.

I might be able to get it down to three per spell level, but even that's a stretch. Let's see...

Level 0: create water, detect magic, spark
Level 1: blood money, infernal healing, true strike
Level 2: alchemical allocation, blistering invective, limp lash
Level 3: burrow, contingent action, glibness
Level 4: dimension door, emergency force sphere, paragon surge
Level 5: echolocation, globe of tranquil water, possession
Level 6: antimagic field, true seeing, source severance
Level 7: magnetic field, simulacrum, vision
Level 8: mind blank, nine lives, true creation
Level 9: create greater demiplane, echean's excellent enclosure, time stop

Magic jar. It too has feats to back it up and is a truly terrifying power, especially when combined with a set of spirit jars. With that combo, you're essentially immortal, as my character, Hama, can attest.

For lower levels, I really like bestow curse, also a horrifying spell to wield against your foes; and magic missile for its offensive versatility (good range, damage, no save or attack roll, few can resist it, works with lots of metamagic, etc.).

Nah, that's Liz's favorite. The Community Manager's favorites would be calm emotions, hold monster, and dismissal. ;)

Grease and create pit. Either order works.

Dark Archive

Synesthesia. It's not super powerful, but as a GM it can remain relevant for the whole game if you can get it to stick. Want to make a higher level bow-wielding ranger feel mortal again? Stick 'em with a 20% miss chance they can't overcome with improved precise shot.
And it has other effects going on, so it doesn't feel as straight up "Go f&~* yourself, Ranger!" as fickle winds.

Plus, the flavor of the spell is fantastic.
And if that weren't enough, there's a mass version of it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sending. My spellcasters have friends and like to chat. :-)

Spoiler:
The Jade Regent campaign starts with escorting the Amatatsu heir to Japan-like Minkai and ends with leading a rebellion against an oni-influenced corrupt government. I added a second heir, an oracle who learned Sending mostly to talk to friends left behind. However, in the end game that character relaying messages via Sending provided a secret communications network for agents of the rebellion.

Flagged for implying that the posters are not human. :p

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Bestow curse
Blindness/deafness
Baleful polymorph

It was recently pointed out to me that I'm kind of a jerk for how much I love these spells... :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sending - because sometimes getting a message to someone on basically any plane right now is important.
Heal - fixes so much stuff in one little bundle
Antimagic aura - ruins so many plans in one little bundle

(honorable mention: endure elements, prestidigitation: because for someone actually living in the world, personal 24 hour air conditioner and unlimited soap and food seasoning would be just about the best thing ever)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Blistering Invective.

You curse out all enemies in range so hard they catch fire. It's hilarious.

5 people marked this as a favorite.

Pants. Come on, pants wins no matter what. It's applicable for all situations.

Villain monologuing? Pants.
Pompous noble wasting time? Pants.
Orc warlord charging? Pants.
Party member finished the bowl of chips? Pants.
Need a distraction? Pants.
About to fight an army? Pants, mass.
Attacked by a naked werewolf? Ok, maybe it's not universally applicable. Unless you slow down one of your party members so the werewolf eats them while you run. Pants.
Need to advertise your new pants store? Pants.
Clothes golem? Pants.

I read the title as "Your mom's favorite spell?"

So I asked her. Her response: "Whatever kills them the fastest." O_o

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Mine would probably be mage hand or prestidigitation. I like cantrips, being able to do little things all day every day appeals to me way more than doing a big flashy thing only a couple times per day.

Low level divine? Murderous Command. Hold Person (as a readied action). Burst of Radiance. Rays of nonlethal, the one that's Scorching Ray except untyped nonlethal.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Admonishing Ray is what you;re thinking of.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I like conjure deadfall for when I need to channel my inner Yakko Warner.

Aziraya Zhwan wrote:

Yup. It is basically the best spell. :D

For low-level, it's hard to guess what that means, but I'll add reincarnate, breath of life, and infernal healing all to various degrees.

Protection from <alignment> spells are pretty boss.

So many awesome spells.

But for me, prestidigitation, endure elements, and similar would be most applicable in my daily life.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Prestidigitation (AKA Really Limited Wish), Unseen Servant, Greater Possession.

The first two really make you feel magical. They're things you can cast beforehand and then just do stuff with. Greater Possession is just buckets of fun- wear a meat suit of spare hitpoints and mental immunity to anybody who isn't in on the joke. It's even better with Lesser Simulacrum, since you can run around in your body.

Honorable mention goes to pretty much every curse spell in the game, though, and especially the Bestow Curse line.

Polymorph any object. It's so versatile.

Bard's escape.......it's dimension door on the whole party!

I love how getting to upper level spells allows you to have a character who focuses on a single spell, but with tons of uses inside and outside of combat.

I have seen floors and ceilings turned into lava, open air into a thousand doses of poison gas, and pumpkins into gilded carriages! Oh wait...I might be misremembering that last one. Heh.

Glitterdust beats out the Pit spells for me by quite a ways. It debuffs the enemy making them extremely easy to hit, negates at least 50% of their damage, quite probably more if they cannot pin point a square, leaves them in place to allow your allies to still kill them, works against flying creatures and things with climb speeds and targets will which is often a weaker save than reflex.
