If your 3 friends are going to take up the majority of space why not just go with what they want to do?
I wasn't planning on running for them. I ran the Tower of Ages for a while as an IRL/TT game and they said that if I ever run it as a PbP they definitely want to play in it. So any other game would be a normal/open recruitment but if I run that one thing I'd have to set aside most of the slots for them...

The nice thing about a Stargate type setup is, you can control how fast you expand. For example, all you need to set up first is the central area (library, magical cross-roads diner, whatever) and set up the plot to allow people to open doors. Then you can just limit how many doors they can open at any given time to what you've had time to set up. One door might lead to some place you've already fleshed out in a previous game, one to Golarion, one to Ravenloft, one to Earth 2017, etc. So you control how much you have to set up ahead of time. If you aren't ready, those doors/gates/etc don't work.

Anything that isn't dungeoncrawl centric. A lot of the APs are really focused on that concept, with little to no real change in layout. Go to this dungeon, defeat enemy, go to next dungeon or hideaway, etc. If I wanted to do that, I can play Diablo.
What I would love to play in is a city based or town or traveling base sited adventure. Different intrigues from various factions trying to control the city or town, or a chase from continent, or exploration to gain badly needed resources for a group's home. Just not saving the world from the mage/outsider/dragon trying to take it over. A different BBEG, or even a non-BBEG but instead an event such as a plague, inclement weather, an ancient curse, an attack of kaiju, or a joining of two planes into one. And a group that has a good connection to the town and each other (whether family, organized group like the Pathfinders or the Red Mantis Assassins, an inherited duty, a lost pantheon of gods who now find themselves mortal and are trying to gain back some form of power, etc). Plus a campaign in which you're not the typical dwarf, elf, gnome, etc 40 year repeat race garbage. What are you? I'm an elf wizard or a dwarf fighter or a gnome rogue/illusionist or a drow ranger..... Instead how about talking animals? Dragons? A tribe of orcs or boggards? That sort of thing.
Hmm, sounds a lot like my game. :) My players have plane-jumped, battled a wide variety of bad guys, influenced politics, kept under the radar, dealt with side plots and menaces, traveled through terrible weather and leisurely boat rides, and flirted with multiple factions all vying for power.

I 2nd this. In my game (my players and I have taken a break but we're starting up again soon) I endeavored to have an open-world canvas filled with danger from various factions and side quests that danced around a central meta plot. I could totally go for a game like that because I've never had the opportunity to play in such a game. I could go without the meta plot if people want to be more freelance.
I'm interested in lots of these other ideas presented above by the other posters. In particular I fancy the idea of a technology/fantasy setting. It could be a lot of fun to play in a party with spellslingers alongside rogues with blasters, in a world filled with interesting technology.
Did anyone here watch Wil Wheaton's RPG (forgive me, I can't remember the name of the game or setting he played) that was on Geek and Sundry's youtube channel about a year ago? It was a futuristic tech/magic setting and seemed like a lot of fun. Someone above mentioned the Pathfinder Technology guide which I'm not familiar with but I'm now finding myself interested in learning more about it.

How about exploring a land in Golarion that has had little written about it, Nex, or Jalmeray perhaps? A none western setting would be great, and both of those places seem to have only a few tantalizing details written about them, so could inspire without much confining, or needing you to look stuff up.

Doing an Arabian Nights-themed campaign could be fun (c.f. Al-Qadim).

I would like a good DM with 4-6 dedicated players with PC's that really interact.
I am a long time player and l like playing pretty vanilla characters compared to all the half-Damfhier half dragon blood raging alchemist bard with the bombardier templates everyone seems to roll up these days.
Ark, I feel like we have played together before, but I can't figure out what campaign.

It sounds like it is the same thing. You want your friends to play, that is totally cool, but why are you asking the rest of us for ideas on things so that THEY can have fun and those who provide the responses are not?

Game = Tower of Ages => his friends play
Game =/= Tower of Ages => normal/open recruitment
So unless we suggest him to run Tower of Ages, our suggestions/ideas will be for a game without his friends. Or that's what I get from his comment. Even though he ninja'ed me before :P

Another suggestion for a theme would be requiring all characters to multi-class. I was in a game that the DM required this and it was interesting. I would suggest starting mid levels and that the two classes have to be within 1 or 2 levels of each other unless a prestige class was taken that combined the two then there would be no limit on the prestige class.

I am not a fan of this idea. There are a lot classes that will not really be usable. I think that it will actually hurt versatility, assuming that is the main goal of this idea.

@Gnick Gnack- Jareru is correct. As I said in the text you quoted, "any other game would be a normal/open recruitment but if I run that one thing I'd have to set aside most of the slots for them... " The only scenario in which my RL friends take up several slots is if I run the Tower of Ages. I am not running the Tower of Ages, ergo the recruitment I post will be an open recruitment with no reserved spots.
