*Interest Check* Sunless Citadel - 1st Edition Pathfinder

Recruitment

Evil Grows beneath the Earth

Why should anyone travel the cracked cobblestones of the Old Road? The fortress that once cast its shadow across the road does so no longer - some whisper that the earth swallowed the fortress whole in an age long past. Four brave adventurers resolved to discover the truth and set off down the Old Road, but alas, they never returned.

"The Sunless Citadel" is the first in a series of eight stand-alone adventures for the Dungeons & Dragons game. This carefully crafted adventure, designed to challenge 1st-level D&D heroes, follows a path to a mysterious dungeon where evil has taken root, and a terrible tree and its dark shepherd plot in darkness.

...and I'm contemplating running this in 1e Pathfinder. Just wondering if anyone else would be interested?

The little that I'm SURE of as I ponder this venture:
1. 1e Pathfinder
2. Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Halfling, Human, and might consider Cat-Folk. Maybe.
3. Start at 1st Level. 20 pt Build
4. Full HP at 1st, then roll or 1/2 HD +1 thereafter.
5. Starting Gold is roll or Average + 10gp.
6. Expecting to take 5 - 6 characters
7. Set in Golarion, not sure exactly where just yet. (Suggestions?)
8. If I go ahead with this, I'd only be offering THIS adventure for now. Would be NICE to play some of the other adventures in this series afterward.
9. Would be looking for a reasonably balanced and heroic party of adventurers. NO evil characters, though questionable morals are allowed. Don't have to be goody goodies, but as I said, Heroic.
10. This is NOT a Recruitment here. JUST a query to see if anyone else would find this to be potential fun.

When dealing with old, evil, forgotten fortresses I'd say set it in Ustalav. It's always Ustalav...

I'm happy to tag along on a low level "romp" as it were... happy to role-play whatever role/class is needed.

I would humbly suggest keeping things simple if not "core" for a debut play-by-post campaign on here.

Will do my best to keep my posting consistent and help move things along where I can.

ps: endlessly heroic, always!

Usually I'd agree with you, SD, but not this time. The setting I'm going for is a bit more "Dalelands" ('Realms) or "Keoland" (Greyhawk) than Ravenloft. But I appreciate the suggestion.

If it was me deciding where to place a location agnostic campaign in Golarion, I'd go with somewhere that's seen less traffic and development due to Adventure Paths and Modules. The eastern border of Brevoy and into Iobaria could be cool. There's also Isger. It's a (neglected) Chelaxian vassal state, but also depopulated and wild. Just about anything could easily be dropped into either location due to all the blank space in those areas.

Oh, interested as well. :)

People love campaigns. You should have no issues getting players.

Agreed, I'd be up for playing but many others will be also.

While I was looking for one of my books yesterday I came across my collection of those 8 3E modules. I worked the first one into one of my old campaigns. Never got around to running the other ones. Put me down as interested in playing.

As for suggestions on where in Golarion to place the adventure. Ustalav, as suggested already is a good choice. I suggest Nidal as another suitable location for the 'Sunless' Citadel.

Any PF class restrictions?

I was in the Dyvers region so nowhere near Keoland.

I think one of the River Kingdoms might do, not the Stolen Lands, but one of the others that could use a little love.

Liberty's Edge

I'm always down for a fun underground romp.

+1

I like that.

I am currently running a Sunless Citadel game, curiously enough :)

I decided to go with Greyhawk though, and not Golarion.

Scarab Sages

Yeah, if not Brevoy/Iobaria or Isger, I'd pick the River Kingdoms next. Maybe the western region, Protectorate of the Black Marquis, Loric Fells, Tymon, and Lambreth.

If I was placing it in Golarion...

Andoran

North East of Falcons Hollow, East of Sauerton. between Mount Kia and Mount Gustus in the rough area north of the river.

Very interested, and sounds a load of fun, I have a LN Half elf{Drow Blood} fighter I would love to try, been getting back into fighter of late and would love to try this with one.

Golarion would be good setting, with teaks background traits as well, etc.

Interested.

Grand Lodge

Interested

Keepin' it classic fantasy? Yeah, interested.

I've got a hat if you have a ring. (Interested)

Dark Archive

I would be interested.

I'd be interested. An old school module. Sounds like some good ol' fun. :)

I think I still have my last character from a previous Sunless Citadel interest_Check (Human Fighter) and I ran a small game for the players to get a feel for their characters while we waited for the GM to start, but GM bailed before the game started.

I have to agree, this spot is about right for it in the Golarion Campaign setting.

Whatever happened before, I certainly have no plans of walking away from this adventure, RHMG, and I'd be more than willing to favorably consider the characters that were going to be a part of it with you, as part of a new recruitment for THIS game. (Doesn't mean no one else should apply. Just that I would take a serious look at people left behind.)

However, I'm not quite ready for an actual recruitment yet. Seems I've misplaced my physical copy of the adventure and am going to have to order a new one from Amazon. Yeah, a PDF could suffice, I suppose, but I've always prefered an actual hard copy of a module when I've run stuff...mostly tabletop, but you get the picture.

BTW, All the suggestions for locales are much appreciated guys!

I can understand that quite well, as someone who was stuck as a forever GM for a good while on the boards.**

Nothing beats having a physical book in your hand, though in some cases like it being a royal pain to find and or hyper pricey, then yeah PDF or epub is the way to go.
As one can always print the PDF to make a pseudo copy of the book.

** Until I got Burned out of GMing, so I can only run modules when I have the spark to do so now.

I am also a bit of an avid reader of novels at times....found a few good ones really worth reading

....

I've looked around, seems I lost the original character information from that game, thought it might be in a txt files in a spot I haven't checked.

but in a way that might be good as the Character creation rules were a bit non-standard, but were thought out for an old school module, fixed some of the feat tax (without Elephant in the Room being used), and incentivized taking feats that generally get passed over, and to pick traits and background skills that worked with their character's backstory....

Just might swipe a few of your ideas in there. Good stuff.

About half of the submissions in that game used the BOGO option I had put in.

Thinking on it I should of included "improved unarmed strike" in the BOGO list for the non-monk/brawler class characters that tend to start bar-fights that required leaving weapons at the door....

But I think the 3 traits, but having two types fixed for the backstory was was a nice touch in helping folks build their backstories with some mechanical support.

Pretty sure available classes will be all CORE, along with Alchemist, Gunslinger, Magus, and Oracle.

Haven't decided if I'll allow any unchained variants yet.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Generally the unchained variants are better.

Rogues and monks are actually decent, summoners aren't busted, barbarians are mathematically easier.

I'm of the opinion you need a good reason to not use the unchained classes. :)

I remember playing a character a long long time ago in a return to sunless citadel campaign before growing too busy to continue. Wouldn't mind a try at it from the start.

What are your feelings on kobolds? They are small and pop up anywhere.

Barbarians aren't about doing things the easy way.

Core races only.

And yes, kobalds DO pop up anywhere, like, all over this adventure.
So sorry, but no.

Preparing a Prequel mini-adventure.

It'll be setup shortly (a day or two).

The adventure will have some Very Old School elements. Evil DM Grin.
So prepare for some thinking.....it won't be like a pure looter shooter game.

No loot to pick up so you never have to stop shooting. Smart!

Can't wait to see the proper recruitment. I have an old character in mind to bring back for submission.

I always ask about kobolds.

Yep, no Loot to pick up so we can move it along.

That and you'll need some time to use your brains....

No Kobolds, but the Draconic template is in play.

Which in Greyhawk, would mean the Kobolds would see you automatically in a highly positive light. As long as you aren't a Draconic Gnome, otherwise the Kobolds would hunt you down to the ends of the Earth.
