Traits!

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

What are some of your favorite (non)campaign traits and why?

Rough and Ready:
Benefit: When you use a tool of your trade (requiring at least 1 rank in the appropriate Craft or Profession skill) as a weapon, you do not take the improvised weapon penalty and instead receive a +1 trait bonus on your attack. This trait is commonly used with shovels, picks, blacksmith hammers, and other sturdy tools — lutes and brooms make terribly fragile weapons.

is one of the lesser known Equipment traits, and it opens up so many hilarious builds if you use it!

I once played a goblin garden designer whose weapon of choice was garden gnomes. And I'll tell you that this stackable bonus to attack is pretty damn sweet.

Pick profession: Woodcutter, Athlete or Guard, and the bonus goes straight to your every attack.

Savant

Mostly cause i usa classes with CHA being the main stat , but most of them dont have perform in the class skill list and even then the +2 is nice.

I quite like having PCs with high perform.

Charming. Because I love to watch my DM's squirm.

Bruising Intellect.
Clever Wordplay.
Student of Philosophy.

All these are very good for the everyday wizard who wants to outshine the rogue in social situations.

Undead Slayer (Dhampir):
You are filled with wrath against the monsters whose unclean blood makes you an outcast

Benefit(s): You gain a +1 trait bonus on attack and damage rolls against undead creatures.

I've found that this trait should stack with the ranger spell "Instant Enemy", which comes in handy at later levels. And since Undead is a very common enemy, this trait is relevant throughout your whole adventuring career.

Horrifying Mind:
Benefit(s): When a non-evil humanoid attempts to read your mind via a magical effect, the reader must attempt a Will save opposed by your Wisdom or Charisma check (your choice). If the reader fails this save, she is shaken for 1 round. If she fails by 10 or more, she is instead frightened for 1 round, then shaken for 1 round.

This one is just great for flavor

And have you ever thought about making a seducing assassin?

Venom-Drenched:
You have nothing to fear from one sort of poison. In fact, you can actually drink the toxic brew in order to make your blood dangerous.

Benefit: You are immune to one specific nonmagical poison. If you ingest a dose of that poison (even if it is a contact, inhaled, or injury poison), it remains in your system for 24 hours; any creature that bites you during that time is subject to the poison’s effects.

Fate's Favored and Finding Your Kin. the last one will vary a lot on your GM...

Adopted. In addition to being very good, it also infuriates the purist grognards when my magical sparklepony, in addition to being a lost princess, was adopted by a very reclusive tribe who usually hates all outsiders.

Yeah, Fate's Favored is crazy good no matter how you see it. But Finding Your Kin is unfortunately a Campaign trait and should only be taken for a character in the Legacy of Fire-Campaign.

Curse you, Casual Viking! I'm infuriated!

I like Forbidden Knowledge, which lets you roll Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (religion) in place of any Knowledge (planes) check.

Reactionary: +2 to Initiative

Yeah it's kind of boring to constantly see this trait on most characters, but that just speaks to how good going first usually is.

As mentioned, Fate's Favored: +1 to any luck bonus.

Luck bonuses are rare, but usually not all that powerful, there are a number of good items and class abilities that seriously synergize with this though.

Eyes and Ears of the City: +1 perception and class skill get.

For any class that doesn't get Perception as a class skill, this is an instant +4 to perception at a STEAL. Need only worship Abadar. Clerics unfortunately miss out (Abadar is not a particularly great god for domains).

I absolutely love utilizing traits that open up new class skill options for a character. Surprisingly Sorcerers do not have Diplomacy as a Class Skill, but with Friend in Every Town, not only do I get a bonus to Knowledge Local, I get to use that naturally high charisma at an even higher bonus for Diplomacy!

I absolutely adore River Rat.

Bonus damage to daggers? Yes please! (works well with Knife Master archetype, or any build using daggers, really).

I wonder , is there an opposite to clever wordplay?

Something that allows you to use your CHA instead of INT on a INT based skill.

Sovereign Court

I like Armor Expert. A solid option for any Martial character.

Planar Savant:

You have always had an innate sense of the workings of the planes and their denizens.

Benefit: You may use your Charisma modifier when making Knowledge (planes) checks instead of your Intelligence modifier.

The only one I know of, and only for planes.

I guess they really like wizards?

Ic heh.

Well , when it comes to wizards there is no surprise :P.

Irrepressible. Allowing me to play charisma-based character with out significant optimization guilt!

Everyone likes us... if they know what's good for them!

Armor Expert +Caravan Guard + mithral hell knight plate = -0 ACP.

This one of my favorites for character who don't have medium armor proficiency. You can get a Mitheral Breast Plate with ACP of 0 using Armor Master. Great for rogues.

I like using Fate's Favored with the Adaptive Luck alternate racial trait. Most of the people in my group won't play small races, so I like to show them how nice it is to have a Halfling around.
