No, your item is not "easily mistaken" for some mundane piece of equipment, because detect magic is a flippin' 0-level spell!

Maybe the author used one of the default magic auras (Abjuration for armor/protective item, evocation for weapons or offensive items, transmutation for bonuses)?

General snark: I don't like how middling items keep recurring for me and are consistently paired up with really poor items. I'm voting for the middling items so much (sometimes as much as 4/day) that I think it's inflating their actual worth.

General snark: I don't like how middling items keep recurring for me and are consistently paired up with really poor items. I'm voting for the middling items so much (sometimes as much as 4/day) that I think it's inflating their actual worth.
Don't worry, that isn't how the algorithm works. It creates a long list of rankings based on how each entry relates to the others. All you've done is say that the "middling" items are better than the "really poor" items. You haven't ever said the "middling" items are better than the "really awesome" items, so they won't be ranked higher for it.

I see SOME PEOPLE are forgetting that the minimum caster level for a magic armor or weapon is 3 x its enhancement bonus. So if your item is, let's say, a +3 sword of slashy weefness, but your spell used for the magical effect is say, inflict light wounds, I better damn-well see "CL 9th" or higher in that header or you've got a strike against you.
