We get it, you're all about being inclusive. We're going with different stuff this year and the contest is changing.
For the love of all that is holy don't cull the cull. We need the cull!
Reasons to do the cull:
1) Reinvigorates voting.
2) Reinvigorates the boards.
3) Those who are culled learn to format and/or edit better next year.
4) Those that don't make top 100 list or favorites list can say "at least I survived the cull."
5) Lets those who are not fanatical voters see better quality of items.
Reasons not to do a cull:
1) Some people will be butthurt and not come back.
Counterpoint Those people will be butthurt anyway, such is the circle of life for a writer.
2) Some folks will be anxious about it.
Counterpoint the anxiety ridden are goign to be anxiety ridden no matter what.
I would be in favor of a cull.

I can't speak for anyone besides my self, but my voting rate has dropped off substantially, due in no small part to growing weary of a) repetition, and b) seeing exactly the kind of items that would be culled. A culling would certainly reinvigorate my voting.

I would love, if not a cull, an actual announcement that there will or won't be a cull. This is my first year voting, and from lurking here on the boards I at first got the notion that a cull was normal, took part every year, and was just part of the process. I decided that I would get to a certain point of voting in the early days, then wait for the cull to do another intensive round of voting, especially as I kept getting so many items that just were not possibly contenders, and I was getting burnt out on them.
Then I saw someone else saying that, no, a cull was only something introduced last year, and there's no guarantee we'll have one this year, etc. Which is fine if that's what Paizo decides, but knowing if I should be like "screw it, back to voting" instead of waiting for something that isn't going to come would be nice.
(*Okay I haven't stopped voting entirely but I do it in really small batches now.)

Actually there has been a cull in both previous years of voting. The 2013 contest was the first to use this voting system and initially there was no intention to use a cull. But after two weeks it was decided that one would really help stir up the pot and concentrate things on the best items. So one got introduced and it really improved the voting process. At first it wasn't called a cull; we just sort of referred to it that way on the boards and it stuck.
Last year we only had a brief voting window. They still introduced the cull at the half mark and—once again—it really improved the items being seen and voted on.
So I'm still hopeful for one this year. While it won't improve my palate much, it will really help the people down at the Dedicated or below levels which make up the majority of the voters.

Huzzah! Though I'm guessing that means not tomorrow (since even those people back are probably varying degrees of back), but hopefully soon. I know it will improve my thoughts, as a lot of my votes seem to be an obvious win vs obvious not.

I've been nervous for ages, this is just giving me an excuse. That's okay, though. I've always been a bit of a worrywart. Thanks for the reassurances either way. It's good for me to hear them from time to time.

I'm not even Marathon and I'm relaxing until the cull. Depending on the day, my brain just melts reading some of the bad entries.

I do not profess to understand the mechanics of the voting algorithm but I just had to again vote for one of two items that I had both previously and regularly voted against. I am unsure of the purpose of the "equally good/bad button" if all it does is delay a decision and force me to (potentially) compromise later in the voting process just to make the algorithm progress more expeditiously.
Yikes! Having just vented on the issue of voting process I'm surprised to see I've hit "Dedicated" - oh the glory! oh the irony!

I always love the first few votes after the Cull --- the quality of items goes up by drastically and I actually need to really consider "which is the better item" rather than just go with "well, I guess this one is less terrible than that one"... :D
What percentage did they cull this year? They have done 25% in past years, right? There were 804 unique items seen and recorded before the cull. If they did 25% again, we should have about 600 in the post cull list, though right now there is less than half of that. Record what you see when voting in the list, everyone. People are waiting to see their item made it through the cull.

No, they use criteria to determine which ones have decent popular support and keep those. The last two years they used a 40% or better up-vote percentage and kept everything that matched that criteria.
This year's cull may have been over 50% of the entries. They may have changed their criteria!

It was certainly a surprise to see that many cut this year. I'd be interested to know if they did change their criteria, or if the voters this year voted so that there were many more that did not get the 40% up votes. Maybe it had something to do with the change from the wondrous items that many were used to voting on to new item types? I don't know. It is just different and it might be a relief to those cut to know why it is different.
