Complete lack of part of necessary pricing guidelines vs. completely wrong design space.

I guess wrong design space wins...

I see a talented designer in there which is why this snark is just oblique enough but you'll understand anyway...

Don't call out the existence of a GM in the description of an item, doesn't belong there. Trust folk will make their own decisions on what means what in their games.

That feedback applies to multiple items but only one of them has collected several upvotes from me (mwahahahaha)

You poor poor first timers. Seeing your item now is not so important.

Seeing your item after the bottom 25% or so get dropped from the running - now that's when you want to see your item :)

Wowza, 119 new posts - all I did was pop to the supermarket and stock up on beer, pear cider, mixers and various cocktail making goodies.

Back to voting for me then...

Still good to know it didn't get DQ for a random reason.

I would be surprised to see my item. I saw it first only after the cull last year, and then two more times after that, and that was well over a month of voting.

I have to admit that I'm a newcomer to this system of voting (was REALLY busy the last two years). How does this dropping work exactly?

How can we tell when the bottom 25% have been pruned?

I really don't like items that offer me a wide variety of really good ablities, at the cost of a potentially crippling drawback, to justify the low price.

"Here, you get to have this plate of yummy pasta, all you can eat. Oh, but the delicious meat sauce we've prepared also contains an extremely powerful, fast-acting laxative."

At some point in the voting process (given the time frame, I'll guess in about a week) the bottom-ranked items are pulled from the list.

I've now seen the same piece of armor 5 times

The same weapon 6 times
The same ring 5 times

This is stupid

All right, I'll cop to it...I'm biased against weapons.

If your weapon doesn't do something actually interesting, it's likely to lose my vote to a SAK or SiaC. Because versatility is way cooler than dice of damage.

Not sure I'd fully realized that about myself before voting on this category.

The pruning/culling/dropping of least voted for items is usually announced with something along the lines of

"The items to vote on have been shortened, you should notice more string item pairings and less of those you have not voted for very much".

Kind of in agreement, honestly. "This shocking burst orichalcum longspear +3" is a huge turn-off for me. Like, your item comes with predefined characteristics? Where's the invention? The ingenuity? I understand that many defined weapons in the core book work in this format, but it just seems lazy and overly defining. Why is every orc-shanking dagger enchanted with icy burst? Why is every warhammer of infinite smiting made of mithral and +3? I can't have a animated athame of asinine alliteration made out of something other than adamantine?

The items price isn't twice it's cost... WHY IS THIS HAPPENING SO MUCH?

As I understand it, for wondrous items the price is always twice the cost, but for items like magic weapons and armor, the cost of the base masterwork weapon or armor is NOT doubled to get the price. Only the cost of any magical enhancements should be doubled, and then the base masterwork item cost added on to get the final price.

So, many of the items we see in voting where the price isn't twice the cost are actually doing it right.

Yea, but on certain things, it should probably be doubled up because you dont pay for a masterwork component. I was trying not to be too specific.

As far as maces that hit like magic weapons, it doesn't bother me. It's a really basic component of many rods in virtually every book ever.

If the rod has a special weapon quality, I just check to make sure it makes sense for the rods other, non-smackey powers.

possibly for the same reason that every Holy Avenger is a +2 cold iron longsword (or a +5 holy cold iron longsword in the hands of a paladin), and every dagger of venom is a back +1 dagger with a serrated edge, and mace of smiting is always a +3 adamantine heavy mace... If you tell people that they are supposed to be designing "Specific Weapons" like the ones in the core rulebook, they are going to be taking their cues from the specific weapons in the core rulebook.

BTW pricing is a guideline and cost is fixed. Supply and demand is what dictates an item's price. So you should care more about the cost of the item rather than the [price. Price is merely suggested retail value and will fluctuate depending on the campaign and/or the DM.

I know what the guidelines state but if the pricing/cost are close to the guidelines that is that really matters IMO.
