The very first item I saw was close enough to my submitted item that I briefly went 'WHAT'. Thankfully, it didn't seem as similar as I thought on a read-through.
Are the algorithms that determine what item pairs with what completely random? Because so far I seem to be getting an unusual amount of items with very similar themes facing off against each other. It's not a bad thing, just funny if it is truly random and if nobody externally decided to put two [redacted~] items against each other, and then two other [redacted~].. etc...

According to the Paizo folks, the actual content of the entry has no bearing on what it is paired with. It's more likely our innate human ability to see patterns in things.
Speaking of patterns, here's my rule for determining whether a particular thing is a trend:
Once is happenstance.
Twice is a coincidence.
Three or more is a trend.
One more item, and "weapons that heal" officially becomes a trend.

I'm pretty sure it's random, but it does happen a bit over the course of voting.

While some of these entries are not entries I'd want to personally play with or GM for, I am really impressed with the sheer amount of creativity that has gone into these! I hope everyone's proud of their items, because I'm really enjoying reading them. :)

Unrelatedly, I just voted for an item I liked less, mechanically, than the other one, just because my downvote had a ton of invented and specific backstory and history for the item that shouldn't be in a magic item written for this competition. :-\ Read all the handy guidelines, folks, it saves you heartache on this front.

First pair of items... Two wondrous items. I put both are equal good/bad. The second pair was rod vs weapon. Rod won by following the proper formatting. Then I read it and found it to be quite ok, with some minor errors/inconsistencies. The weapon reused very old idea and did it so-so.
why does it seem like I get two good items together or two bad items together but rarely one of each.
Okay. This pairing was more like the early voting hours of last year. Blatant SAK versus item with one boring ability. To their credit, both had perfect formatting.
Another neat rod.
Then I got two anti-magic items against each other. Both needing much work IMO.
Surprised I've only seen one gun.
What's with those horizontal lines drawn manually with dashes? I am tempted to reject those on the basis of not being able to use simple template for formatting...

I almost automatically down vote really bad grammar. Typos happen, but when things like "This is a axe what can do magic at you."* are showing up in a writing contest I can't let it slide.

Lots of tentacles this year. Not a criticism by any means, just an observation.
Very nice idea for an item but the writer terribly needs an editor that will work with both the stylistics and streamlining...
That one was on somebody's bingo card. Aren't we supposed to be playing bingo? Who was supposed to print up the bingo cards?
Weird. My third or fourth pair is two sets of rings for romantic couples.

Inspiration is one thing, but I think this item infringes on copyright laws...
I'm finding I'm more likely to vote for a staff that's basically just multi-SIAC but with nice flavour and spells that make sense together than one that's more ambitious but probably would have made more sense as a rod.

There aren't as many obviously converted wondrous items as I feared, but there are definitely some.

Terrible formatting and style errors but it's still better than the other one.

I have a feeling not too many others will, and it would only work in a certain flavour of campaign, but.. yeah.

I did not expect to see a magical version of something from another game in the running.
I don't see any rules against it... Both items referred to closed content anyway.
