Everyone knows that a real party has six members: Ranger, Barbarian, Magician, Thief, Cavalier, and Acrobat.

Solo I prefer arcane trickster magus. Fighting healing stealth and perception. It works for most races.
Dual probably hybrids of rogue mewning ( bard, ninj, inquisitor, ranger etc.) In order to cover skills and magic.
Quad - you can more effectively specialize at 4+.
I think it depends on what you will do. Not too many solo adventures. However in PFS you have side missions solo which are often skill based. Hence the trend toward more skilled social characters.

I was quite enthralled by that show when I was little. Upon watching Blueluck's clip, I'm having trouble remembering why...
It's easy. you were little, and like most of us, that little self has almost become a stranger to which we have a hard time relating to.

There really isn't such a thing as a standard adventure that's built for a solo character no matter what the build unless you outlevel it severely.
On the other hand, a good GM should be able to build a solo campaign for any conceivable build. It takes a lot of out of box thinking to do so, but it IS doable. Solo Adventure books are a good guideline.

Solo character?
Half-orc bard. Balanced blend of healing, skills, damage output, and arcane utility. Can probably get out of most situations. Can sneak around in the dark.
Two-man party?
Dwarven cleric and half-orc rogue. Cleric can function as a tank and a healer. Rogue can provide arcane utility (through UMD) and skills. Can sneak around in the dark.
Three-man party?
Human paladin, half-orc ranger, and elven wizard. Human is classic front-line with support healing. Half-orc ranger can be skills guy with more support healing. Elven wizard is iconic wizard for arcane utility.
Party of four?
Human fighter, elven wizard, dwarven cleric, half-orc rogue. My favorite "classic" party.
