TEO Cheatle wrote:From what I have seen, the terrain type that is higher elevation actually bleeds into the lower elevation hex. If you go look at all the ramps in the Alpha, the dirt/hilly roads extend into the woods hexes.I'll have to take a closer look tonight, but I think Cheatle might be right. I'm pretty sure the actual hex boundary is fully on top of the elevation change for most elevated hexes, so that the cliffs themselves are actually slightly inside the lower hexes. I'm thinking the roads leading up into the mountains are equally(-ish) distributed between the lower and higher hexes.

I really like the starter towns, but can I ask for an Emerald Spire on the emerald spire hex instead of just a Green lion? He looks lonely and makes me wonder where the rest of the Voltron Force has gone (probably Golgotha to fight the Robeasts.
Note: I just had to add Robeasts and Voltron to the Google Chrome dictionary. I feel this is a terrible design flaw, they should have been included stock.

Zayvian, we are playing around with an Emerald Spire Icon, the issues we have is there just isn't enough spot on art work that we can use in the map.
Thornkeep for instance, is a piece of art work we pulled from the blogs and added some color to. The Thornkeep book only has a top down view of the Keep/Settlement, which can't be adapted very well to the Map. As far as the Emerald Spire goes, there is only one side/skewed view, and it might be a little too off to use.
If the devs gave us a little more access to their art files/pictures, we could probably add all kinds of stuff. I have put in a request to Lee for some information about the map, specifically choke hold points and elevation changes, he asked me to check back in a few weeks and he would help me out. So, when we get the info, maybe I can get some art work to help with the Spire/Thornkeep, Fort Inv.'s Icon is actually the Citadel from the Fort.
Either way, we will be constantly updating the map, and bringing you all as much aesthetically pleasing images, icons, and information as we can. In about 2-3 weeks, we also have another surprise in mind for you all, in conjunction with Hope's End, but that is too far off now to really announce.

It would be cool if the devs. added more than just cuts into the hillside for roads in elevation changes.
caves, switchbacks, ect.
Not sure if it's going to change when rivers/waterfalls are functional, but I was able to get up into the mountains around Osterburg without going to the choke point by jumping up the dry riverbed. I had a little help from a nearby hill, but I seem to recall that either Dario or Kitsune managed to get up into the northeast mountains of the Alpha area, too.
If you're making your home on the top of an elevation change, you'll want to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the area to minimize the chances of being surprised.
Oh, and I love the idea of cave systems that lead into these areas, too. One of my favoriate places in Darkfall - I can't remember whether we both found it independently, or if Bringslite told me about it - was an area where you had to swim down and follow a short cave system that opened up into a bowl-shaped area that was pretty well off the beaten path. There's a sense of adventure and exploration in finding and utilizing those things that's very appealing.

I appreciate the work that has gone into this, and when I figure out what character style I want to play and figure out which settlement to "camp" in it will come in very useful.
Only issue I have is that with my old eyes, it seems somehow blurry. Also the contrast between the icons and the background just seems off. and for ease of reading, could the text be just a single color?
This is not meant to be critical, but there must be others out "there" (where ever "there" is) who also have color/sharpness issues.

Saiph, most of the work on the Map has been Rhun of FMS, I have just been doing a lot of the research, finding images, and have made a few design choices, he is much better with photoshop, than I.
Once you can zoom in, Garin, the blurriness will be gone, I just had to upload it in a place you can't fully realize the map. I agree a bit with you on the contrast, we have played around with a couple of things, and probably will some more. Once you can zoom in, it will be easier to read, as a matter of fact, without the black lining of the letters, it is harder to read.

This <link> is where I usually show Cheatle the changes I have made. I sometimes reupload it several times a day experimenting with different looks for various things like the Thornkeep icon and the Emerald Spire icon, which have been the latest things I have added.
So if you're interested in following the map's work in progress, the above link should work. But it is in no way final and will be repeatedly changed in the future. It is also 1408x1568 which should make it easier to read.

On this version the zoom is significantly clearer. My complaint is that zoomed out the settlement names are unreadable. If there a way to provide less information zoomed out and have the names bigger, the when you zoom in, the names are reduced and the alignment layer appears?
I've seen it done on a version of the Golarion pdf map, but not sure how intensive doing something like that would be... and since I'm not doing the project, I don't wanna see you guys get overwhelmed by trying to do something that is not feasible or wanted by others in the community.

@-Aet- Aereks: Right now it is just a picture file. Later on it will be more than that but for right now it is just a picture. I can't get too fancy with it yet.
@GarinT: Yeah, that is a font issue.. it is Blackfeather except the font put the k and f too close together. Should be better now but I'm not really focusing on the font too much right as name display will change later on.

There's shadowing around the grassland hexes in the midlands and the forest hexes in the lowlands which seems to suggest an altitude change, but there's no altitude change except along the major boundaries with marked transitions. For example, the cropland hex near Callambea isn't down in a hex-sized sinkhole.

I also find this disconcerting.

There is a significant difference between the shadow for an elevation change and the shadow for an marginal elevation dip. If it were to signify a sink hole, it would look like an actual elevation change... See north of Callambea, and its shadows would be much more significant.

After talking to myself in a forum thread for a week, may I present the icon for Sunholm.
We may change that once someone with a trace of actual artistry in their veins actually wakes up, I trust this will be no problem.
