Top 5 things you want to see at launch

Pathfinder Online

So what are you expecting to see (at launch) of PFO? Here is what I want/expect:

1. Solid (not best) graphics. Personally, I hope they do not go all out on the graphics. This would create some problems, like optimization problems, not being able to run it on low to medium tier computers, ect. I don't want the graphics to be complete garbage, but at the same time I don't want to pay another 600 dollars for my computer just to run it on high settings.

2. Fluid gameplay. What I mean by this is responsive controls. WoW actually got this right. Also, meaningful gameplay. I want to always be doing something and get something out of it.

3. Great animations. If they make the animations on par or better than WoW, I will be extremely happy. I think the success to a great MMO has a lot to do with how responsive the controls are and how well the animations were done.

4. I want to be able to create ANY kind of character I want. I want to be a druid, so I hope there is a lot to offer for a druid.

5. Constant updates. I hope after launch that GW tries their hardest to patch fix anything that is wrong with the game. Maybe even add expansions at some point. This could be easily handled if they go down the subscription payment route, which I hope they do.

If by "at launch" you mean "at the start of Early Enrollment", there won't be any Druids.

I just hope we have a chance to upgrade/alter characters to take advantage of the patches and upgrades when they become available.

If GW release a whole new set of appearance options, we ought to be able to go in and use them on our existing characters. When the new 'classes' come out, we should be able to do some minor tinkering with previous choices to use the more appropriate abilities just released. Minor tinkering rather than major, although I have no idea what the best way to avoid wholesale change would be.

I know that it is perilously close to retconning and completely rebuilding a character. There is, however, a difference between getting bored with a role and wanting to start over, and with suddenly having available a boxful of more appropriate options for the original concept. If the most appropriate choice is not available, it is rather harsh to be left with a handful of 'second best' abilities just because you started the game before the better ones were ready.

As Bringslite references:

People who join us as early as possible in Early Enrollment are going to have a heck of a ride. They're going to see how a MMO is built from the inside out, and have a direct participatory role in making that happen. Others may choose to wait until more of the game is fleshed out and they can engage in a way closer to their "ideal vision" of how to play... and that's absolutely OK as well. When Pathfinder Online has developed to the point where they feel comfortable "getting on the bus," we'll be ready to welcome them aboard.

I think that covers the wide range of player preferences, very well.

A little admission: I'm looking forward to open pvp + alignment/rep regulation - should be fun!

Give us our race changes and all will be fine.

If I have understood the followups, Druids will not be available. Like other "class Skill" paths not available, 60% + of the skills needed will be, though. Start with those and in time, the rest will be there. :)

Goblin Squad Member

P.S. There is something very refreshing in a company not cramming poorly designed features in as fast as possible, but rather waiting until they have the time to do them "right" and "well".

I want to see just two things by Open Enrollment:

All Core Class trees
All Core Class Races

Some time after that, but before year two after OE:

User Generated Content
Water Travel (Rivers) and Combat
Advanced Class skill trees

Finally (yeah I know this is six) I would like to see:

Veteran's rewards (cosmetic) and at some point a veteran's reward of Goblin being a playable race.

"C'mon Ryan, it's Goblin Works, how can you resist the temptation of making Goblins a playable race?"

At the start of Early Enrollment:

  • Wizards
  • Forts
  • Escalations
  • Bulk Harvesting (including a general sense of what we'll likely need to have in large quantities in order to build a Settlement)
  • Tier 1 Crafting

At the start of Open Enrollment:

  • Paladins
  • Highly developed Settlements
  • Mass Combat
  • Dungeons
  • Tier 3 Crafting

That the game not require as much time and effort as Eve and doesn't have friendly fire, to start...

1. A very basic combat system, that is simple / fun.
2. A very basic crafting / economy system we can use to outfit ourselves with basic gear.
3. Enough skills to train to keep us occupied until more are released.
4. Some very basic PVE content.
5. Some very basic motivations to PVP.

Thats all I care to see for EE.

Maybe continue following the Eve Standard from there with a new patch each year adding to the game.

Eventually everyone will have everything they want. Err, I mean... Yeah right lol. Cant make everyone happy.

Adding a few things each year will do wonders. Time to work everything out before the next patch goes live. Plenty of new stuff do play with.

LOL Goblins

I like everything except the User Generated stuff. Granted it can be fun but it always seems to take something away from the game for me. Could be really cool if done right, but I have no idea what right would be.

Summoners as soon as possible. If that's in, I could deal with the lack of most things. Although, that's likely far down the line...

By the end of Early Enrollment, I just hope there will be a lot of variation in the ways that you create your character. Meaning, most of the classes being implemented in some fashion.

I think that beyond the core systems for player interaction and PvE content, a sandbox needs plenty of ways to let the player play the game how they want to. As long as you have all of that the game can be functional and enjoyable.

Goblins nothing. I want a half-gnoll.

Beastial half orcs! I know I may never see my beloved tieflings, or gnolls... But what I can get is a half orc! So please let me make him look really beastly, rather than a human with bad teeth. None of this and much of this.

You know what I'd like to see most in early enrollment? Myself. I want to play that game from the beginning on and when the project started I was quite optimistic that I would get in, but seriously, with all the backers and some of you crazy guys in the forum.... I could barely keep up with all the updates and discussion even though I frequently read everything here. Damnit.

At start of EE I would like to have available:
1) Creditable lore backstory for why we are there and why we can't get someplace else (invisible wall lore element).
2) Story elements that allow us to craft a character backstory which accounts for being given the Mark of Pharasma (but most likely not for getting the twice marked condition).
3) Have the Staff of Circles Daily Deal functional.
4) A functional disarm/weapon lock combat maneuver (for the pseudo-monk).
5) Have all long term PvP flags functional.

Respectfully,

I would prefer to make up my own story to why my character is in the Riverlands. I would be very pleased if GW could provide me with a story that makes total sense to me for why my character is there but from experience, coming up with a reason that pleases the entire playerbase is going to be tricky.

I would not presume that you want the kind of enforced "personal backstory" that some games provide you with (e.g. Elder Scrolls online: a God stole your soul *shudders at the thought*). Maybe you mean that you want a lot of lore connected to what is currently going on in the River Kingdoms so that you can make up your own story?

I mean, in a sandbox game, isn't it more appropriate to create your own backstory to a greater degree than it is in most other MMORPGs?

Actually, come to think of it I haven't seen any discussions about 'overarching stories' or 'main plots' in the game. Did I miss those threads or are the players going to be the story, end of story? ;)

Goblin Squad Member

The only thing that might come from would be the dev made moduals they talked about a while back. And of course the eventual UGC. These two things would likely be separate instanced off things that have nothing to do with the wider areas of gameplay though. Still it is Pathfinder, at the very least Im expecting books, scrolls, and NPCs with lore nuggets if not specifically quest content.

I thought he was just wanting a plot hook that explains why we can't die permanently and can't leave the RK. Or maybe the free resurrection only works in the RK, or maybe it can work elsewhere, but you're on a timer (so modules can be set elsewhere). None of that is handing you a life story, it's just coming up with an in-character reason for the limitations of the setting. If you want to say Pharasma hasn't marked you for resurrection, you're free to delete characters who die, but if you do accept that particular MMO convention, being able to react to it in-character will make more sense than denying it happens.

Goblin Squad Member

@Keovar , yes. @Wurner, I am capable of creating my own backstory (See this post and its follow up). However, I would like some information from GW to help me generate story that fits within the lore of the game. In my third part of Harad Navar's journey to the River Kingdoms I plan on writing my own event that grants him the Mark of Pharasma. I would be a lot happier if what I write has context within the game, but I don't expect to get any lore at all until the start of EE. Lord loves a re-write, but I don't.

Goblin Squad Member

I know you write stories Harad, that's why I was surprised to see your wish. I get what you mean now. Can't write about the mark until more is known about it.

@ Ryan,

Will we be able to train various skills from the core class skill trees, that will put us accurately along the path towards the other class types, not included in EE or even OE?

Goblin Squad Member

@Bluddwolf, and others worried about not being able to train the roles they want right away,

I'm almost 100% sure that you can save up your experience. From what I understand, we'll have to complete quests, perform tasks, or pay for training in order to actually spend XP, so you should be able to just bank them until whatever you want that isn't implemented gets added to the game.

Certainly... unless somehow we are troubled by the consequence that for two and a half years our character will be without skills or training... two years clinking our beginner picks on sandstone hoping for a garnet embedded in the schist, waiting for a way forward.

No, I much prefer selectively training those skills we will find useful when finally we are empowered to come into our own.

Goblin Squad Member

@Being,

I completely agree. However, I'm also sure that there will be skills available as part of other roles that would benefit a role that won't be implemented until OE or shortly before. For example, if I want to play a Ranger in the future there will most likely core skills as a part of the Fighter track that will be shared in the end that I can train in the meantime. For the rest, I can bank the experience a bit in anticipation of more Ranger-specific skills being added to the game.

@Bluddwulf - here's the thing.

If we suggest to you that you can prepare to take a role that isn't yet implemented and you follow our suggestions, but by the time we're ready to implement that role we've decided to make changes in the way it will work which renders our advice invalid, you'll (rightfully) expect us to make good by giving you a respec or some other consideration.

Since the odds of that happening are close to 100% we're setting ourselves up for failure.

So we're not going to issue that kind of advice. You can make your own guesses about how to best prepare for a role that's not implemented.

That goes for virtually every aspect of the game. If it is not in the game, we are not going to try to create a process to prepare for it. The one exception we're going to make is for races, because we already know we can do them without requiring a respec. You'll be able to change the race of a character one time to switch to gnome, halfling, half-orc, or half-elf once we add them to the game if you started when you could only choose elf, dwarf or human.

Thanks, Ryan. In a very weird way, that's actually good news for me since it means I'll be able to fully dedicate Khimber (my future Paladin) to Crafting (or something), leaving Nihimon free to single-mindedly focus on being a better Wizard.

Great news to hear that again!

Ryan, is that one race change per character? or at least per destiny twin character? Is this going to be for all players or only those in EE (ie: if a race gets added after OE starts can you chaneg the race?).

We get these questions a lot on here and I take the time to answer whenever it pops so any news on that front is welcomed, thanks!

You will be able to change any character created before a core race is added to that core race when it is added. You can make this change once per character. There will likely be a sunset provision which means that there will be a window for making the change; it will not be something you can wait 5 years and then do.

So each time a race is added there is a window to change it to that race.

But what if your waiting for a certain race, then find out it'll never the made after a few years. You then decide to change to one that was release earlier, but the window is closed on the free change.
The player just got screwed out of the option he was hoping for and his secondary choice that was released.

I think a list of the PC races should be made, but the list also includes a percent chance of it going into the game as a PC race.
This way everyone knows which races are likely to get in, but also what races will never be considered or will be unlikely to be in the game.
Then players can weigh their options when a new race is released and decide if they want to hold out for the race and know it's a slim chance, or go with the next best thing.
And the list gets updated every 3 to 6 months.

Goblin Squad Member

@Azure_Zero, the list is "the Core Races", and the percent chance of each is "100%".

Specifically:

  • Elf
  • Dwarf
  • Human
  • Gnome
  • Halfing
  • Half-Orc
  • Half-Elf

I don't think Ryan's offering a Race Change to any of the non-Core Races.

Goblin Squad Member

1) Collision Detection System. No clipping through other NPCs/PCs during fights.

2) Different body types and a Skyrim-like Face-designing system so we don't all look the same.

3) In-Game Seasons. With actual effects on the game and the NPCs/Resources within.

4) The ability to ally with NPC factions, and actual 'racism' between the races in ways that make sense. Half-Orcs would be almost impossible to make an alliance with an Elf faction, but would slip easily amongst bandits, etc etc.

5) NO POOP QUESTS.

I don't think Ryan's offering a Race Change to any of the non-Core Races.

We don't know that for sure and Game Design documents are Living Documents and thus subject to change.

So unless Ryan specifically states that the free race change is for core races only, it's up in the air with no solid evidence for one or the other.
The above quote from Ryan does not mention or specifically exclude featured and or Uncommon races as possible future races open as player options.

Goblin Squad Member

I think it's pretty clear Azure. The race changes are for the 7.
