This is somewhat off-topic, but I just wanted to say that I absolutely adore The Harrowing by Frasier! I'm about to start that module in my Runelords AP when next we get together to play it, and I'm psyched about it. Wonderfully written with exceptional RP possibilities that I know my players will take full advantage of . . . it's most certainly the best adventure that I've seen in the module line (granted, I'm psyched about Shel's Dragon's Demand as well, but that's because I love adventures that incorporate dragons as the primary story arch).
I have no doubt that Crystal Frasier will do a spectacular job on this AP installment, and I'm looking forward to it already! =D

According to JJ, no Dominion of Black or countdown clocks. :(
Glad I didn't get my hopes up. Oh well, it still sounds like a cool AP. Very "The Mummy" with Brendan Frasier, except without all the Brendan Frasier. And maybe there'll be an article on the Dominion in one of the adventures? Please please please?

But there's a Frasier in there. Crystal Frasier. She's writing one adventure in the AP :)

hmm, at least some less exotic (world-spanning, non-mythic) AP... Nevermind this being Ossirion, yikes ! Bring out the sandstorms, the couscous and the mysterious Bedouine caravans traversing the silent desert at Midnight. Ancient secrets under the sand and hopefully nothing with any Runelords !
This will certainly make me renew the subscription. Because after the last three APs, my hope was running pretty low. Sorry to all the "alien planets" crowd, some people out here actually love the more classic stuff^^

Is this gonna be regular in every AP? Aliens, Robots and Real-time Guns somewhere hidden in the AP's numbers?
I don't mind it in this case because alien simply means ABOLETH and WITCHWYRD, aliens doesn't have to mean technology and lasers, just creatures from another realm, and not all realms have technology I hope.
I really love sand-themes and I love mummies so its probably gonna end well, can't wait, but first the Demon AP I will love, which Technology, Aliens, Robots or real-time world stuff are gonna wind up in the demon ap?

None, I think, in Jade Regent.
None in S&S. Guns in the last issue, but not modern guns.None in SS. Unless you count Xin's Clockworks as Robots.
RoW, obviously.
As far as we know, none in WotR.
And the take on them in Aliens, Robots (and real-time guns?) in MM, looks completely different from how they were used in RoW. It's not clear how MM is going to go, but I doubt it'll be near-modern Earth or Sword & Planet.
I don't think you're going to have to worry about the weird alien/tech stuff dominating.

Considering that in the history of APs, we've only had two adventures on aliens planets (one of which is Earth), I think we could use some more Distant Worlds love in adventure paths. Hell, there was only one alien in Shattered Star and he wasn't even real...
I feel with Osirion's roots in the Dominion of Black, the countdown clocks, and Aucturn, this was a missed chance at having a really cool dark alien cult themed adventure. There is (and always has been) plenty of classic adventures for everyone out there to play. The most any of us have out right now is Doom Comes to Dustpawn. Beyond that (with the new change to modules) there isn't much else for us. And whenever we finally get an adventure, you get people like Sincubus that can't stand that others are having fun with "lazers" and "aliens". So yeah, it's pretty disheartening to again have to wait another six months for something even close to this.
Here's hoping for a Numeria AP announcement at GenCon.

The discovery of an ancient relic in a long-lost tomb opens a doorway to the distant past, and a sinister cult will stop at nothing to bring a forgotten pharaoh back to life. As the living dead stalk the streets and flying pyramids appear in the skies over Osirion’s greatest cities, can anyone prevent the mummy of Hakotep the Sky Pharaoh from conquering Osirion and reclaiming the lands he once ruled in ages past, or will Osirion become a land of the dead?
Huh, that's rather odd. Menedes I was the Sky Pharaoh, with his tomb said to be beneath the Sphinx Head, according to previous sources. Hakotep I was largely unknown, but constructed the Slave Trenches named after him.
Now assuming that it wasn't a typo in the catalog, and ancient history being its somewhat vague and poorly sourced self in-game, they might very well be the same person, with no actual contradiction in place.

There's no technology, robots, or real-time world stuff in Wrath of the Righteous. There are aliens, but there are aliens in pretty much every AP, be they akatas or brain collectors or whatever.
And again, it's my understanding that there are NOT aliens in "Mummy's Mask." That was a bit of faulty information.
At least, no more aliens than normal. The Countdown Clock and Dominion of the Black do not currently have a big role to play in the Mummy's Mask AP, which is really much more focused on mummies and ancient Osirion than the plots and hints from the earlier adventures.

It's not a typo.
There are more sphinxes in Osirion than the Sphinx Head, for one. As for the Sky Pharaoh thing... there's more going on there than it appears, but those will be secrets to be revealed next year. When the adventures come out!

I'm not really sure how new of a development it is (I don't really pay that much attention to the individual AP writers), but I really appreciate that Paizo hires female writers. Between this and the Pathfinder policy on male/female balance and "non-traditional" individuals that Paizo is really committed to a diverse world view. I know that this is a little off topic, but I just wanted that to be said.
Good for Paizo. Really just another reason to keep giving you my money.

Was there more than one Sky Pharaoh, because Menedes I is identified as the Sky Pharaoh in Osirion: Land of the Pharaohs and Hakotep I is mentioned as a pharaoh which is largely unknown except for him being responsible for construction of the Slave Trenches?
Odd that Hakotep is the Sky Pharaoh, in contradiction to information from the Osirion book.
Hmmm, that is odd. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. ;)

Read more of Sincubus's posts and you'll pretty much see that he cannot stand it when Paizo publishes anything that has lasers and aliens. And there are plenty of people like him about various things. Look up pretty much any thread about psionics, Asian setting, Book of 9 Swords, firearms, and epic/mythic rules and you'll always see people that don't want Paizo to waste time with those rules, despite the fact that GMs can simply ignore such rules in their game.

As James has said, there are currently no plans for aliens in this AP. I'm reasonably sure that the Aucturn Enigma will probably make an appearance in the AP, but it is most definitely NOT the "Aucturn Enigma AP."

I think I might skip over this. Was hoping for some stuff with Aucturn and Nyarlathotep. I'll see what AP is after this come GenCon.
Yeah, I was also hoping for Stargate feel. Cultists trying to raise an ancient undead lord and usher in the era of the dead sounds a bit too generic for my taste.
Sure, it's great that Osirion will get some attention, but the general idea isn't that appealing to me, since it's been done quite a few times in previous APs (not the ancient undead lord part, but sleeping/hibernating/waiting for their time ancient tyrants coming back to life).

Well, as I mature I find more and more I should just let Rob and James speak to the contents of the APs.
But I would suggest you keep your options open. Its a long way off till Chapter One is even on sale. Eventually more information will be available and you might have a change of heart.
No one has much reason to believe me, because I'm an author and I suppose I am biased. But we see the big picture.. and I'm not trying to sell you anything when I say the "Big Picture" is pretty damn cool and really exciting.
I respect that you have to follow your tastes though. Just remember its still a long ways off.

Hmmm... shame. I was almost ready to re-up my subscription (which I'm cancelling after Reign of Winter), because I love something focussed on the Dominion of the Black, but I think I'll hold off now. Not so keen on a generic "tomb raiding"/"mummy hunting" AP. Not that I think you guys won't knock the socks off it or anything, more that like Wrath of the Righteous, it's just not thematically something that I'm excited about running.

Also, for those looking for more Dominion stuff, don't forget Dragon's Demand is coming out soon!
Regarding aliens and the lack thereof in Mummy's Mask, my feelings on it are kind of complicated...
I honestly would be thrilled to have an Osirion AP with Dominion elements. But I'm also equally thrilled to have an Osirion AP free of them.
These thoughts probably aren't going to be terribly organized but:
I really dig the Dominion. Or at least what I suspect the Dominion is, especially with the assurances of what the Dominion isn't. But the combination of them and Osirion does carry some baggage I'm not a very big fan of, most of it relating to the notion of ancient aliens. That's not to say that very concept is badwrong and nothing cool can ever be done with it ever, but...
I've always hated the ideas that get pushed forth in a lot of ancient aliens speculations that ultimately undermine the RL culture involved(Egypt gets hit the hardest by this). That is, it attributes the accomplishments of an entire people(most often not white at that) to the aid and/or manipulation of a "superior" set of beings, be they aliens, Lovecraftian horrors, or a super-advanced lost race of white guys from Atlantis and/or the Hollow Earth. It's part of why I've never been a fan of "Egypt got their whole culture from aliens" scenarios, especially when it seems far more common to see variations of that in fantasy/sci-fi than having Egypt's history be its own.
So I was actually a bit worried that Osirion and its culture would be hijacked so to speak by the Dominion. Or Nyarlathotep. Or Azlanti supermen. That's not to say I want the Dominion out of Osirion. I think the idea of Osirion and the Dominion having contact in the past and influence from that carrying over into the modern day is awesome, and it's something I definitely plan to play with in a Distant Worlds campaign. But I wouldn't want Osirion compromised to the core by them.
That's why when it was stated that the Dominion won't be taking center stage in this AP, I was excited again. Sure, we lose the potential awesomeness of modern Osirion taking on Dominion infiltrators with the long-running machinations of long-dead pharaohs both against* the Dominion and collaborating with them coming to fruition and ancient technology reactivating and OH GOD. But now, we know for sure that Osirion will get to shine and stand on its own two feet during this AP without the Dominion or Lovecraft overshadowing and overwhelming its native flavor.
I'm not kidding in the previous posts about being excited to see Osirion explored in this AP, especially when it ventures past the stereotypical elements of mummies and pyramids(though those things do have to appear, because c'mon) and delves into the elements of fantasy Egypt that don't get nearly as much attention. It's like, there are a lot of folks that absolutely flipped out over Jade Regent because they were excited to explore another flavor of Fantasy Japan. That's kind of how I feel about this one. :)
I trust Osirion/Dominion will happen someday. I suspect it's more likely that Osirion will be the launching point in that campaign though. There's a whole lot of worlds out there to tie into such a campaign after all. And pyramids could be on each of them. :)
*Hey, I'm in love with the idea of Kahotep, Pharaoh of Tomorrow from The Great Beyond being a futurist that fought against Dominion influence at home and abroad/offworld. So sue me. :D

I already thought so, Aliens = in most cases just aberrations. I really adore aberrations those are the alien types I prefer, clockworks and automatons are also cool.
When most people above hear ALIEN they think about technology and lasers, something that most fantasy aliens don't wield.
Sincubus |
Gilbin wrote:Aren't all extra-planar creatures essentially aliens? No no no. You see, demons and kytons are totally realistic because we meet them every day, while aliens from other planets are silly made-up nonsense.
Then if you wish for aliens next time, call them aberrations. As they should be called in D&D and Pathfinder products.
They are called aliens probably by the people living in golarion and in the overal world of the game.
And if you wish for the traditional aliens with laser guns call them Greys.

I hope at least one adventure will have something about Nyarlathotep, tough I like classic Egyptian themes, cause if not in this adventure path then when. Weird Lovecraftian stuff should be rare so that it remains weird.

The two Osirian modules are excellent adventures and really seem to grab the imagination of everyone who plays/reads them.
It would be a shame to not have a nod to that.
Sincubus |
So, are there going to be traditional aliens with laser guns in this AP or Bestiary 4? I'd love to see Greys statted up.
I think the answer to your question is already been given by James somewhere above. There will be aliens, but if I understood it correctly they won't be of the laser kind, more of the aberration/outsider type.

hmm, we had the slightly weird First World Fey Realm in "Kingmaker", two trips to outside planes with specific planar rules in "Legacy", a quick visit to hmmm, what-do-we-call Plateau of Leng in "Shattered Star" (less so in "Runelords"), some odd visits to off-beat worlds in "Reign of Winter" ( just extrapolating from reading over the stuff published for that path, I don't actually have the issues), one could guess that "Wrath of the Righteous" might takes the PCs to the Abyss.
What would actually be fun if several installemnts of an AP would transfer the players... say to the Red Planet. Or the Green One. John Carter of Mars
Nevermind Golarion has so many continents as yet unexplored and not even roughly charted - lots of weirdness to be placed there.
I feel with Osirion's roots in the Dominion of Black, the countdown clocks, and Aucturn, this was a missed chance at having a really cool dark alien cult themed adventure. There is (and always has been) plenty of classic adventures for everyone out there to play.
No, actually there hasn't been for about 18 months of APs (Star, Reign and Righteous - yes, no-one I know really wishes for the mythic rules... strange world.). Nevermind that several APs before that were/are of a more lacklustre quality and some needed much rework.
And yes, a weirdly alien cult might really have worked - nevermind that whole team harkening back to the great old days of Cthulhu and the old Egyptian campaigns from that era - Cairo Sourcebook etc...! But that does not have to include "other worlds", plane-hopping for the sake of it, or introducing 20th century weaponry.
I like the idea of "sands and ancient evil", especially since A.Scott, R.Pett and very-gobliny-Frasier are on board. Let's see how much strangeness they are goingt to wring from the desert.
The most any of us have out right now is Doom Comes to Dustpawn. Beyond that (with the new change to modules) there isn't much else for us. I am not so sure whether too many players' and GM's outside these board's regulars do actually agree with you. Or would even participate in a suryey, so numbers would invariably skewed towards those posting most frequently on the forum... And even if you have one player saying "guns would be cool", several others on those groups will renege on such a plan or playstyle. My brother is currently "re-running" Skulls and Shackles-- now with gunpowder weapons added in, and all but one of his six players loath the whole idea... It's not yet splitting the group's cohesion, but the whole "gun thing" is a constant irritating nudge.
So to make a few players happy, many others will shake their head in disgust -off planet, different planet or cross-setting extravaganza. The few gaming groups I know off, and my own had a quick once over on the general proceedings of Shattered Star and Reign of Winter, and only in one case was there even a partially positive reaction. While "dungeons" and "alien technology" can be fun for the more jaded of us cultivating the forus, playing in several groups, many players are not as jaded. And will quickly desert a group, if the fare is too exotic.Nevermind, there is hardly anything "really alien" racewise in a world, were two of the main races are refugees from the First World. Where Fox-spirits and frog-offspring are possible player races. Were the half-undead and reincarnated are probably choices for players.... Luckily, not too many things are hexamorphic, serpentine or tentacular yet^^
If I would ask for something "exotic".... let's hit the Azlanti archipelagoe, where basically every island could be magic-morphed into something special, otherworldly and unique, Landscapes shifted and transformed by magic or the far-off reaches of southern Avistan (let's live among the Gripplis) or even some exploration of the Western continent. Jade Regent hid some nice ideas for the Northern Reaches of the World, why not do something more exotic someplace else ? Undersea campaign anyone ?
