Here's my fantasy product, which would solve the issue of a follow-up "Beginner Box 2" type product and also be highly useful to any Pathfinder GM.
How about a Sandpoint box set?
It would mirror the BB in components, having a flip-mat with the Rusty Dragon on one side. A 64-page book detailing Sandpoint and surrounding area, NPCs and locations etc. The larger 96-page book would be a campaign of several connected adventures.
Pawns for all of the important NPCs of the town plus unique pawns to go along with the adventures book. In place of the dice + pregen PC folios a big poster map.

A Sandpoint boxed set would be a "must buy" for me. Would love to see the characters from "Burnt Offerings" stated and included as pawns or even minis -- felt a little let down when Belor Hemlock and Shaylis Vinder were left out of the RotRL pawn collection. A couple flip mats and/or paper poster maps and/or downloadable pdf's would be nice too. There's a thousand stories in Sandpoint right now, and a Beginner Box: Sandpoint could offer a couple thousand more.

Well, I wasn't going to post again, but here we are!
Could add a taste of Kingmaker-style hexploration...
the Sandpoint Sandbox Box.
Well seeing the title i initially thought it said "How about a Sandbox Point?"
Seriously though that would actually be pretty cool. Although if there was one Golarian city i would like to have a hexploration map for, it would be Kaer-Maga.

Kaer Maga hexploration?
I don't want to threadjack, but I'm curious what you're envisioning here. 12-mile hexes in the outlying regions? Or smaller hexes in the city, like a kind of faction-gang-war thing?
A mafioso-type saga playing out in the alleys of the Asylum Stone seems like choice material for an AP, rather than a boxed set. I would take either.
(if your answer is long, consider a new thread and link back. Don't want to strangle support for the Sandpoint Box.)

Yeah I would buy both of the products mentioned here...a sandpoint BB boxed set or a sandpoint sandbox boxed set
In fact anything with the words sandpoint and boxed set in the title is pretty much an insta-buy for me...well maybe not sandpoint boxed set with face eating badger..but even with the badger it probally still a solid purchase lol.

I also think it would be a GREAT idea t do this! Add some small maps and side adventures, like were in the first 6-7 issue's of the comics, NPC Pawns of some of the locals and maybe even a full map of the Rusty Dragon (Flip-Map) Heck, even I would get this!! (: Would LOVE to teach a bunch of beginners the game I've LOVED and been playing for 30-40 yrs!

I was thinking inside the city. There is just so much interesting stuff there, and probably one of the most diverse populations in all of golarion.

I think it makes sense to start the concept and tailor it with "My First Campaign Set" stuff like pawns, encounter-scale Flip-Mats, and mini-adventures to give it out of the box play value. Focus it on the same levels as the Beginner Box, primarily.
If it sold great and could trigger a Magnimar or Korvosa or Riddleport or Kaer Maga boxed set, well, that would be pretty cool too.

I'll add my thumbs up. An excellent idea which would give your Beginner GMs a wealth of information all laid out in the style they are familiar/comfortable with. Enables you also to extend the range of creature entries, pawns and magic items if desired, and helps promote the official pathfinder setting.

I absolutely love this idea.
This is something I've been thinking about doing since we decided to put Sandpoint in the Beginner Box in the first place.
It's not on the schedule, it's not something I've even really discussed with folks, but it's a damn good idea.
I also absolutely love that Erik likes the idea too.
Please, please, please make this happen. My bank account might complain, but OMG I would love it.

The more I read about this idea the more excited I get. I mentor middle schoolers in Pathfinder and one of the ways they're getting their first GM experience is by teaching their little brothers how to play using the Beginner Box. But there isn't much adventure material out there outside of the Black Fang adventure and the Mine adventure, and while absolutely necessary the material in the BB on creating their own adventures is not something they're immediately going to act on.
I just had a session with the kids where they absolutely wanted to go off the rails and be juvenile delinquents in their home town lol. They absolutely loved the idea of just roaming around, creating into drama with local townspeople. I wished I had a set of NPCs and possible plot hooks to help tie them into some of the adventures I had planned. That sense of freedom and use of their imagination is something that computer and video game RPGs absolutely do NOT provide.
It would be cool if the Box gave extra adventure material with a sandbox structure. Not necessarily with a Kingmaker-style hex map (though that would be cool to have for the Hinterlands), but Kingmaker-style "side quests" that are tied with various NPCs in town.
Just some other ideas (I'm caffeinated right now). These are actually all directly inspired by the positive feedback running Sandpoint adventures with my middle schoolers:
- material for joining the local crime syndicate, or tearing it down!
- going to school at Turandarok Academy
- joining the Sandpoint Theater
Another thing my kids would love would be more material for the LICKTOADS! Maybe there could be material for any group who wants to play the goblins!
Of course, Level 5 is (almost) a perfect time to transition to the second volumes of Rise of the Runelords, Jade Regent, Shattered Star, Second Darkness, or Curse of the Crimson Throne. Perhaps if I had this box I could start those APs in Sandpoint using the Slow XP track...
The Rot Grub |
Actually, Rise of the Runelords, being on the Fast XP track, leaves a LOT of room for expansion. But I ran it on the Medium XP track. That, combined with the fact that I had six kids, meant that I created a custom intro adventure where they are graduating from the Academy Their only starting wealth is their backpacks, and there is a rival party of sorts for them to compete with: https://guildberkeley.wordpress.com/category/campaign/rise-of-the-runelords /page/3/
Just something that might get the gears turning...
Also, some other ideas:
- running for mayor!
- giving the skeazy Scarnettis their comeuppance!
- exploring a little island offshore that has a GREAT backstory (those of you who ran RotRL know what I'm talking about)
- investigating a certain notorious local monster/legend...
Vhalantru |
Umm yes, this would be a spectacular Idea.
Random thoughts on things to include:
A good selection of NPC pawns to represent the major characters in sandpoint.
Perhaps a selection of Goblin Pawns and include the We Be Goblins adventure or similar (though maybe thats too much, but it seems like a cool idea as it could be played with players playing goblins near sandpoint, or more goblins for heroes in sandpoint to go stop).
I'd really recommend including some stepping stone rules to help ease players from the beginners box to the full game maybe on some kind of basic level. Combat manuevers like trip or something, concentration checks.
Map of the Rusty Dragon Inn on one side, Perhaps the docks or the city gates on the other? The idea here is that this is a sequel to the beginners box so they should already have the blank page.

At first I was dismissive of the idea, as Beginner Box players should graduate to the Core products rather than have a series of side products that drain their wallets before they inevitably graduate to the Core rules.
But having read the thread and given it some though, I agree it's a pretty good idea. A Beginner Box for GMs, an introduction to campaigns and the world. Plus details and hooks for myriad adventures in a town.
Plus, unlike the BB, it would still be useful to established players. I just started RotRL last weekend and it would have been very handy having a separate Sandpoint book to save on flipping pages.
And I'd love an Inn flip-mat. Flip-mats should be scenes usable a couple times, and we already have the town square and a gate. Having an inn would be handy.
And it'd be an excuse to get more art for the various NPCs around town.
