I do not have a pet I am afraid, but I was watching my girl's cat last night, he could have made an appearance, but he is a grumpy old man cat... and cares not for our RPGs.

Possibly in the future, right now I am pretty small fries compared to some of the other 3rd party folks.

Is Magus pronounced May-gus or Mage-us?

I pronounce it May-gus.

Huh, I've never used either of those, I've always used Mah-gus.

Same.

For real words, don't forget dictionary.com. You can look a word up and click the little speaker symbol and the internet says it out loud for you.

May-gus is correct.

Not everyone uses the Random House Dictionary, of course.

Goes with how Magi can be pronounced...

Hi Jason.

Having seen an earlier post stating that you're a fan of NIN and Industrial music, I've got some follow up music related questions.

1. Have you heard How To Destroy Angels, a band that Reznor formed with his wife? If so, what do you think of them?

2. Do you prefer industrial dance (also known as electro-industrial), industrial rock or industrial metal? Or are you like me and a fan of all three?

And some general questions...

3. Do you have a Cinnabon nearby? If so, do you find yourself powerless to resist the tasty treats? (I only just discovered Cinnabon while on a business trip in South Africa, we don't seem to have them in Australia, at least not that I've seen).

4. Is there a particular work of fiction that you would consider to have played a major part in defining yourself? For example, mine was The Crow (both the comic and film), at age 15 it helped shape my tastes in a lot of ways. Obviously there were others that had an effect, but I'm talking about a major influence.

5. Do you have a personal "pet" area of Golarion that is your special domain? I'm sure this has probably been answered somewhere before, but I've not yet come across it.

Cheers,

Tinkergoth

What is your idea of a 'normal' adventuring party, in terms of composition and specialties. I ask in particular regarding the CR system. When a monster is supposed to be a challenge for a typical party of 4, what kinds of characters are in that 4 person group in your mind?

1. I have indeed. I like HtdA, but I am happy that NIN is back. I just bought tickets for their Seattle show.

2. Industrial Rock and Metal are my preferred flavors. Dance has never done much for me.
3. No cinnabon nearby that I know of. Years ago I saw the nutritional info on those things and swore off them. I dont need all my daily fat and calories for breakfast.
4. Hmm... as far as fiction goes, The Hobbit was the first fantasy book I ever read. Had that not been assigned to me as a kid in English class, who knows where I'd be right now.
5. Well, I did write up half of the Inner Sea countries back when Erik and I tackled the Gazetteer, but these days, the only one I keep up with religiously is Razmiran :)

I generally assume some sort of mix of fighter/cleric/rogue/wizard, with the understanding that there are plenty of classes that will fill in just fine for one of those slots (sorcerer instead of wizard for example).

Im old school that way.

Thanks for the answers Jason.

I'm insanely jealous about you seeing NIN, I managed to catch them on their last Australian tour before they went on hiatus. The one where Reznor gave verbal permission for everyone in the crowd to go home and download his entire discography.

Fair call on the Cinnabon thing too. I've started only eating stuff like that when I'm travelling. At home it's mostly healthy with one cheat day a week.

I see what you did there with the religiously/Razmiran thing :P

On the topic of fiction though, I've got some follow up questions:

1. Who are your favourite authors? (I know better than to ask for just one)
2. Do read any Urban Fantasy? If so, which novels/series did you really enjoy?
3. Have you read any of Kate Griffin's Urban Magic novels? (If not, I highly recommend them, starting with A Madness of Angels)
4. Are you a fan of Discworld? If so, are there any particular storylines that you would call your favourite, for example, the Witches or the Watch?

Cheers

Jason, why were no philosophies added to the "Deity and Religious Philosophy" chart in Ultimate Campaign? Or are the "No Deity" and "Undecided" supposed to be the philosophies?

1. Martin, Howard, King, Lovecraft, Leiber, Tolkien, Moorcock, Vance, Mieville, Vonnegut... and a few more that I am sure I am forgetting right now, in no particular order of course.

2. I have not really touched the genre, unless you count Mieville.
3. Nope. I will investigate
4. I have some discworld sitting in my reading stack. Have not started yet.

The philosophies are generally campaign specific and we do not include that material in core books.

I've yet to read any Mieville. I hear his books are excellent though. One of my friends keeps telling me his work is the Neverwhere for our generation, which I found a bit weird, as I'd always considered Neverwere to be the Neverwhere for my generation.

In regards to Discworld, if you're starting right from the beginning (with The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic), you'll find that the setting changes quite significantly over time. It's inevitable with a series that long I suppose, and the changes are most definitely for the better.

Additionally, depending on what sort of stories you're after, you might want to look into books about specific characters. The Wizards tend to just be zany adventures that often send Rincewind the failed wizard to bizarre locations (Interesting Times and The Last Continent are Discworld versions of Asia and Australia respectively); the Witches often retell classic stories like the Brothers Grimm tales and Shakespeare; while the Watch novels handle to crime noir category. There's others as well, but those are the major groups.

In your mind, what's the canonical source of a summoner's magic? Is it his imagination? Where does the eidolon come from?

If you just want to write whatever you want about the non-rules aspects of the summoner, that'd be sweet too :)

The initial idea for the summoner basically came from the following statement "wouldn't it be cool if there was a character where you get the play the monster". There were a lot of references, but many of the mechanics came from the concept of letting you build your own monster pet.

Have you ever seen a style of summoner play where the primary emphasis was on the spells and SLAs instead of the Eidolon? The standard non-archetype summoner seems well built to go either way.

For Discworld, I personally think that Men At Arms was my favorite entry point for the world.

Pendin Fust wrote:

Vimes and the Watch are certainly my favourites. My first Discworld novel was Guards! Guards!, so I read the story of Vimes and his people right from their ignoble beginnings through their rise. I think The Night Watch is my favourite of the Watch novels, mostly for the dynamic between Vimes and Carcer. My other favourites are Going Postal, Hogfather and The Truth. In each case it's the villains who make it really shine for me.

Going Postal is one of my favorites! Death and Rincewind are my 2 other favorite storylines second to Vimes and the Watch.

I've been re-reading Thud! about 12 times lately, for some reason it's been one I've enjoyed multiple times.

I just managed to snag Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, and Night Watch from the used bookstore about a week ago. Haven't gotten to read them yet.

The Watch/Vimes sub-series is my favourite as well, and I think the sequence of Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay and Jingo is also an excellent way to see how the series gradually changes genre from parody to satire.

Although, for an entry-novel I'd probably go with Hogfather or Reaper Man.

Reaper Man was my first DW book, as well. Shortly followed by Colour of Magic, which I have to admit I enjoyed quite a bit less >_>

Belated Happy Birthday Jason!

Hogfather is definitely a good starting point. I'd also suggest Soul Music for anyone who has a real love of music in general.

Also, a little late, but Happy Birthday Jason!

Really? Bulmahn is a cancer? No wonder I tend to agree with his perspectives more often than not. Shout out from June 23rd! Cancers rule.

Hi Jason,

I really enjoyed your interview on Know Direction. I was wondering what makes a session memorable for you and if you'd care to elaborate on your favorite session as a player or GM in recent memory.

Well obviously one of them should be Wes. Because no one on the Paizo staff understands better than he that in all situations, Infiltration is Magic.

Scarab Sages

so now that pazio con is over will we get the mod that was run there called "We Be Goblins: Crash and Burn" or even a true mod based on playing goblins as pc?
