I need help with a name

Advice

Silver Crusade

Went to a con this past weekend. My last session I wasn't able to play my main character, so I rolled up a level 1 fighter to play for just that session. I am having the damnedest time coming up with a name for him, though.

He's a human fighter who fights with a nodachi (think giant katana). He's not an idiot, but he's obviously not the brightest bulb in the marquee either.

My concept for the character is he would be a youngish kid and he is always quoting "real life pop culture references" that make no sense to his party members. He's the sort of guy who talks in movie quotes, kind of like Dinozzo from NCIS if you've seen it.

So, anybody got a good idea for a name for this rascal?

Kaire, Mento, Rebon, Kaile, Simon, Djino, Thiry.
Hard to give a solid advice when you have no real background and only a specific way of talking.

Whatever you name him, have him always refer to himself in third person and prefix his name with 'The'.

Call him The Messenger, not even a real name. That way, he can "deliver" that monster sword (in third person) two all the monsters he is attack.

Hmm, How about Bellisaro, given your references. :-)

The Hero.

(The) Chosen One?

Haha! I get it!

Ohhh...I could make "him" a "her" and call her Hannah Barberra.

So far my favorite suggestion is "The Messenger" and my character will DEFINITELY refer to itself in the 3rd person.

"The Messenger doesn't like the way you're looking at him and pretty soon the Messenger is gonna have to do something about that!"

Oh, and Belz, his backstory is that he has no backstory. The kid doesn't remember anything about his past. The only thing he remembers is how to use the giant sword and assorted other weaponry he carries around. It's almost as if he came through a rip in the space-time contiuum from another universe...

While I don't have a name for you, specifically, this character makes me think of the protagonist in Secret of Evermore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_of_Evermore), who would also be quoting (fake) real-life pop culture that confused both the NPCs and the player of the game.

Let's see. A young scoundrel whose only memories of his past are from another era, amnesia of how he got where he is, and uses a spear-sword for a weapon? So uh....he's Matt Cauthon from the Wheel of Time?

Not exactly. Mattrim's memories were from his universe, just in an earlier age.

My character has no recollection of Golarion whatsoever. All of his memories are pop culture references from OUR universe.

Not only that, but the weapons aren't really anything alike. A nodachi is basically an oversized katana, whereas Mattrim's weapon was more like a quarterstaff with a blade attached to one end.

Honestly, I have read every one of the Wheel of Time books except the last one, but I wasn't even thinking of Mattrim when I made the character. It's entirely possible my subconscious mind was, though.

Yeah I was actually thinking of a Naginata not a Nodachi. My bad. Still, there are some similarities regardless of where the memories come from. To be honest though he is my favorite character from the series and the last book is basically a gigantic love letter to his fans.

It's a cool character design and definitely poses some interesting RP challenges. As far as a name, I would probably pick something from our time, or no name at all since he might not have recollection of his name. Perhaps you could roll with no name and let the party give him an alias?

Well now it's obvious, his name is Kidd (or perhaps The Kid) because that is what he was first called when he got to Golarion.

I went with "The Messenger" for now as suggested further up in the thread. His message is a nodachi in the face and he ALWAYS delivers.

And as also suggested upthread, he always refers to himself in the 3rd person.

I like "The Kid" as well, though.

He "ALWAYS" delivers? What about when you roll a 1?

Frankly for a guy that always delivers, I would've named him Malone. He refers to himself in the 3rd person, but not as the messenger OR Malone...as The Postman.

"The Postman ALWAYS rings twice: once when the blade goes through yer armor, the second time when I PUNCH YOUR CLOCK!"

"The Postman says: always go First Class!"

"Speedy delivery for you here, courtesy of The Postman. Its stamped with PAIN and the return address says The 9 Hells!"

With a character that ALWAYS delivers (like FEDEX) if he rolls a 1, that means he has to REALLY, REALLY roleplay. Not like he isn't already, but get up from the table and put some back into it! :D

"The Messenger MISSED!?! The Messenger never misses! He just found a different way to get to his target.....THROUGH THE GROUND!!!"

I can identify with The Messenger, because I had a character named Vast Deathmaster who also spoke in 3rd person. He was very much like all those barbarian movies. The only way he got smart was to drink a lot.

Chosen One + Simba = Cho'Simba-One.

Or just Ichigo.

Or Ralph.

Call him Dave. When people address him, have him say, "Dave? Dave? Dave's not here!"

"The Messenger" sucks. Sucks rocks. Sounds stupid. It sounds like somebody's sophomore attempt at humor. Don't go sophomore, man. Graduate. Graduate.

Man you guys are giving me some great ideas. I especially like some of your quotes Mark. I might have to go with "Malone" as his name, but he refers to himself as "The Postman", or maybe "GPS: Golarion Parcel Service".

And yes NGC, the character ended up with a 7 Cha, so he's not the most socially tact person in the world. He's loud and brash (duh, he's 19!) and mainly talks in "Eart pop culture references".

"Ding dong. Delivery. GPS here with a nodachi TO THE FACE!!!"

Grand Lodge

Journey.

"It is my name, my life, my destiny."

"The Postman has a special delivery For a Mr Victim?"

"Sign on the dotted line punk - here's a pen!" (thrusts nodachi)

When he fumbles "Ooohh...you requested GROUND delivery? That just means it takes The Postman longer to DELIVER!"

"Through Rain, and sleet and DEAD... What? that's the end of it isn't it?"

"Let The Postman ENVELOPE you in pain"

after finishing the enemy he smashes their forehead with the pommel of the nodachi "You just got POSTMARKED"

fighting a giant "Oversized packages are no problem...for the POSTMAN!"

Shadow Lodge

A fighter is a Slayer.

Whedon Reynolds, aka the Slayer?

Or some variation of this.

The Bob
The Joe
The Susan(transgender...lol)
The Crusader
The Killer
The Obliterater
The Guy Who Did It With Your Mom Last Night
The Exterminator
The Fighter
The Predator (might be more of a barbarian or a druid name, but this could work)
The Dumb-Ass...lol
The Texter
The Seducer

Silver Crusade

Hahahaha Mark, some of those are great. I especially like the postmarked and oversized packages ones.

Joss Whedon was the producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

He also produced Firefly whose lead character was Malcolm Reynolds.

Silver Crusade

Oh ok. I thought that's where you were going but I wasn't certain. I was a little old to have gotten into Buffy. I am upset that I didn't get into Firefly, though.

Grand Lodge

It's too bad he's not an Inquisitor. You could have fun with him referring to himself in the third person if he was calling himself The Reverend. But give him a German accent, and you have Doktor Haxxenslash, freelance amputator! That no-dachi is just his preferred medical instrument. ;)

Refers to himself in the 3rd person? What about Bonesaw?
