Well I saw my item twice early in the voteing process, but after day 2 hadn't seen it since, and haven't seen it post cull either. Now I'm worried.
You have only voted between 100 and 499 times. Unless you have other reasons to expect being culled, I wouldn't worry about it. I didn't see mine until I voted about 1500 times. And haven't seen it since, now having around 2000 votes.
It drives you nuts, though, doesn't it? You just want to see it once to make sure it made the cull and read it through to see if it was as good as you thought it was when you submitted. You just want to give it one vote.
I was obsessed for several days before I found my own item, and now I'm just casually voting. Good luck.

I've seen mine twice and voted for it twice. The first time was easy, the second time I did think about it. I'm sure if I'd seen my item 5 or 6 times I'd have voted against it by now, but not with only seeing it twice :)

I've only seem mine once - and I'm grateful that:
1.) I DID see it, and:
2.) It was paired up with an item I could honestly vote against.
Like most folks on here, I'm sure, I'm torn between wanting to see my item progress, and wanting to see the top 32 progress - and of course, hoping that the two can co-exist. Kudos to those who have found the courage to vote against themselves when faced with a superior item - although I truly liked my own submission, I have seen a number of items I've liked more than my own (and will likely "borrow" in future campaigns), and should I be faced with that choice, I hope I do the right thing.

Thanks, but honestly the one item i voted over mine was far superior in both design and mojo that i had to vote for it.

Saw my item post-cull, which makes me happy. Took me a moment to recognize it as mine. Wondered if it was an item with a title suspiciously like mine...
It was not up against something top 32-worthy, which, by my RPGSS logic, means my item isn't either, which does make me a little sad.
Ah, well. Making archetypes anyway!

That's not necessarily the case - don't lose heart - there is not long to go now before we all know for sure.
Since voting began, I have now seen my item 9 times, of which
2 times it was up against strong competition - so strong I felt they both deserved the vote.
4 times it was up against "good enough for a book of items" pairing - it was a good honest think before voting mine each time.
3 times it was an easy vote for mine.
So this shows me that you can't truly gauge how your item is doing / where it is placed by the items it is paired with, the quality changes quite dramatically with each pairing.

This has not been my experience since a couple days past the culling. Most of the items I see now are close to evenly matched and it usually comes down to personal preference on which gets my vote. Most are just mediocre and seem to repeat, but every once and a while I'll get a pairing that are both really good and that I have seen once or not even once before. I'm certain by this time that the pairings are based on similar scores or rankings.

Maybe...my own experiences make me wonder. I've had several runs where one item is clearly better than the other--sometimes by what I think is a pretty good margin.

Well, there is the possibility that I have just seen random pairings that seem like the are similar in quality. Or I've convinced myself of that. But it certainly doesn't seem like it.
My hypothesis is this. The pairing is based on like scores. This means that the items at the bottom and the items are the top are thinned out. The item at the very top has X number of up votes. The one below that has one or a few fewer votes and so on down until you hit mediocre items that all have around the same scores and . This builds a bloated, ladder system where an item keeps climbing as long as it keeps getting up voted. This is why we see similar quality items and because the mediocre items keep going up and down around the same area they seem to repeat more. This is the reason you sometimes see an item on the very next pairing that you just voted on. Your vote has just sent one item up or down to challenge another item for its spot. The fact that people are voting simultaneously helps to randomize this process, but it still happens occasionally. Now we only see the really bad items (of which there are fewer after the cull) and the really good items when someone votes an item up or down to challenge it for its spot. Items will fluctuate about the spot on the ladder that they deserve to be based on their merits.
This would actually be a good system that would help to mitigate those who vote for their own item against anything else and the voter who votes for the worse item each time to try and make their item remain higher. The wrongly voted up item would find itself up against harder competition while the wrongly voted down item would quickly be voted back up when paired with weaker items. It would be averaged out by other voters fairly quickly.
About 10 votes before I finally saw my own item for the first and only time after about 1400 votes, I saw a pairing of two items that I had never seen before. Both were great top 32 quality items and this got me wondering if I had finally hit near the top of the list. In my latest 500 or so votes I have not seen either of these items again, though I have seen some weak or mediocre items three or four times each in that amount of votes. Likewise when I saw my item it was paired with an above average item I had seen one time before and had voted up fairly recently. I have not seen my item or the other since and I believe they are both above the 75th percentile (wishful thinking).
If others don't see that the average pair of items seem to be fairly evenly matched, maybe I'm being tricked by my own mind, but I won't be convinced of that until I see one of those great items paired with some of the chaff I see on every vote.

I just saw mine for the second time. It was paired with one I have never seen before that was pretty good. Certainly better than the average ones I have been seeing. I did prefer mine, and I have seen better than both, though rarely. It has been days since I've seen one that I had never seen before so this was a surprise. It has further convinced me that the pairings are based on like scores.

BUT, since the assessment of the item's quality is subjective in its nature, the data is unreliable, so our points are moot. :P
That's true. What is a very good item to some might be average to others. But it should all balance out in the end if it works the way it should. Like a large group guessing the number of marbles in a jar.
Also, if it works like I am proposing it might, pairing is still somewhat random within a certain set. Toward the middle there are likely several hundred items with the same or similar scores. You most often will get a pairing of two of these items and occasionally you will see one of these mediocre items get enough votes to be paired with a very good item. Then it will go back down where it belongs. Occasionally you will get a very good item, that has risen to the great items. It might also be that the items are not matched by exact scores, but by scores that are close (like within three votes of each other). This would make it so some weaker items will get randomly paired with items that have better scores, but they will average out to be matched with the same scores.

Seen my item four times. Twice before the cull, twice after.
It may be random chance just like in Video Poker where one has the same odds of getting dealt a Royal Flush each time.
So when lightning strikes on a second and third consecutive hand despite the odds which are normally against that it is an observable phenomenon.

Let's say we have three tiers of item quality: poor, average and good. Because of the culling (and because average items are more likely to get the neither button treatment) it's probable that the average tier items make up the majority of the items we see on the voting page. So it's not really surprising to see items of roughly the same quality paired against each other.
[joking]If you're seeing a lot of good items paired against each other, well then... maybe you just have low standards.[/joking] :P

And seeing what items seem to have been culled vs. ones I know that made it, I'm pretty positive it's still in there... I just don't think the gods of randomness want to confirm it for me. *fist shake*
That said, I'm feeling more and more like I won't be cracking the top 32. I still like my item, but I can think of a few things I would have done differently and I have seen some better items.

Oh, I know. And I'm trying. And I think that's part of the reason why I'm giving up on seeing it. I don't think I'm going to have the time to hit Marathon before the contest ends. Right now I'll be happy if I hit Dedicated.
I seriously can't believe I haven't hit 500 votes yet, because it certainly feels like I've voted at least that much. You still have fewer than 500 votes. I didn't see my item until after I hit the 500 vote mark. I didn't see it again until after I hit 1000 votes.
Also, I suspect that the top items are seen less frequently than the middle-tier items. If so, your item *might* be ranked high and thus be rarely seen (comparatively). But take that with a big pinch of salt, obviously, since I am purely guessing.

I have similar suspicions...Just because there are less of them and people are less likely to hit "neither" when they appear. I'm trying to keep telling myself that, but we'll see. ;)
In other news, I did finally see an item that is similar to my own. Not exactly the same thing, but there are some unnerving parallels. ...I still like mine better, but I'm feeling less reassured each day. I guess I should be thankful this is the first one I've seen. I feel bad for everyone who found themselves in one of the insanely popular item categories this year.

You are only a Star voter. I had to vote about 1200 times before I finally saw my own item. Unless you think it was a weak entry compared to the items you have been voting on, or had some problem, there is no reason to think you were culled with less than 500 votes in.
