This my first post and as a beginner I am excited to start my Pathfinder campain today as a rogue. I have loved RPG since I was a teenager and am really impressed by the vastness of this game. What i mean by that is the amount of data and help you can get from these message boards is astounding. I start playing at Adventure games in Scranton Pa tonight and I can't wait!

Well, welcome in Pathfinder, and have a good game ! :)
Due to medical reasons, its been awhile since I've been able to play.
It should be an excellent reason to play, actually. Sorry to hear that, I hope it isn't too serious.

What character do you take, and why ? What would you do, but can't (sub-par concept/not doable with the rules/DM ban...) ?
I really want to try an Elven Inquisitor of a god of the hunt. Concentrate on Knowledge Nature and Track, take the animal domain for the Animal companion. Sort of like a ranger but more cleric-y and with some decent social skills so not limited by the usual reclusive ranger social trope.

Paladin. Specifically, a Human Oath Against the Wyrm, Sacred Servant paladin of Iomedae.
Why? Because he can do frickin' EVERYTHING. He's got the spells and buffs for every situation, gets access to the AMAZING heroism domain, Enlarge Person, Fly, AND stoneskin, and with good feat selection, a bunch of super nifty bard spells, too.
I love being a jack of all trades, and this combo makes a freight-train of a jack.
Also, ignoring going on a smitey power-trip, I think I'd love to try a Gladiator/Brawler. Performance feats are freaking AMAZING, and combining them with the Cestus/Madu, taking Two-Weapon fighting, and getting buffs from Brawler, it just seems like a really fun, flavorful, and effective build.

This sounds particularly cool. I'd love to see how it plays out in a full party. If you manage to succeed, let us know how it goes. Necromancy's always awesome.

i have a variety of odd concepts i want to play, too many to list, and none of them have earned the approval of any of the many "Grognards" in my area. because they deem them too "Anime" and don't want "Anime" in thier "Fantasy". and to them, "Anime" is a broad term that may as well accomodate anything not from thier precious "Medieval European Fantasy" they they refuse to accept that Pathfinder is truly a kitchen sink.
And your response is to get snotty and insult them because of their love of medieval fantasy while simultaneously refusing to be flexible enough to not base a character on your love Japanese cartoons?
Yeah, let us know how that works out for you...

I find it odd that he can't find anyone to run his anime stuff. Its clear from the tone of his post that he doesn't consider the people he plays with now to be friends and, if he had the attitude his tone is expressing at my table, I wouldn't keep him as a player. Meetup is a great way to find new people to game with and, surely, somewhere in his city are people who play anime.

Insufficient information. A lot of times people have very strong opinions over what they are playing, and I don't really care. I play fill-in a lot of times. It also really depends on the setting. Is it a city campaign, a wilderness campaign, a completely underground campaign? It's not as easy as "I'm playing a halfling witch!"

Good point and related to the earlier, I guess. For example, you can't really complain about not being able to play an Orc in a Dark Sun campaign. They're canonically extinct in that setting, so unless the DM decides to retcon that fact, you are NOT playing an Orc. Another example is "no Elves in low-fantasy campaigns" even though D&D is tough to play like that. But what do you mean by "playing fill-in"? (English is not my main language, so yeah...)

It depends on the campaign. I like to create characters that fit into the theme of the campaign. So if it was intrigue based I might want to play a Super Genius Time Thief or shadow assasin, if it was high fantasy I would definately want to play a dragon rider. Witch is also on my to do list, so really, it depends on what info I get from the dm.

I could never do this because it's suboptimal, MAD, and partly banned by my DM... I really want to play a Sacred Mountain/Many Styles (Dragon/Efreeti) Monk, Elemental (Fire) Sorcerer, Fighter (to qualify for), Eldritch Knight. Basically, a pyro Monk. It's a premeditated 1-20 level build that I'm not even sure would be that awesome until at least 12th level. I just really want to try it, but it will most likely never happen.

What character do you take, and why ? What would you do, but can't (sub-par concept/not doable with the rules/DM ban...) ?
Cleric. But if you ask again in a couple of days, I'll have a different answer for you.
I'm new to Pathfinder, just getting into it in the last month and a half, after a 20+ year hiatus from RPGs. My first Pathfinder character is a bard, because the class just sounded cool from an RP concept standpoint, without knowing any of the specifics when I picked it. Bards didn't exist in any usable form back in 1st edition D&D/AD&D, which is the last time I played. My second character is a barbarian, because I wanted a front line melee combatant and pretty much flipped a coin between barbarian and fighter. So I've got characters for both the games I'm playing in currently.
Now I'm actually sitting down and reading the Core Rulebook to get to know the game better, and as I read about each class, I keep going "That looks cool - I should try playing one of those!" I just read the cleric section, and took a little extra time to read some of the stuff here on the forums about them to try and understand the class better. So I'm excited about clerics right now. Druids are next alphabetically, so I'll probably be excited about them by the end of the week. :p

Something I personnaly would love to see - but probably not to play : a halfling child with the Childlike feat, Gravewalker Witch with a puppet.

I want to play an Inquisitor of French origin.
"Monsieur, je souhaite savoir ce que vous avez vu, et je souhaite savoir maintenant!"
Ah, nice one, but I can already do it with every character, y'know. (Also, shouldn't you be called "Le Soldat Fidèle de La Reine" ? :p)
In a polite, evil dandy bastard way, you could also say :
"Monsieur, j'apprécierais grandement que vous me disiez ce que vous avez vu. Dans le cas contraire, j'ai bien peur que votre intégrité physique n'en pâtisse, comme moult personnes avant vous ne peuvent malheureusement plus en témoigner. Et je suis un peu... "pressé", voyez-vous... "

Crazy things.
Do you wish to sit and talk ?

It'd be interesting. I imagine my French Inquisitor as Lawful Good or Lawful Neutral, but Herr Rettweiler, as I intend him to be, is most definitely Lawful Evil. After all, he's Gestapo and wants to exterminate non-humans. I imagine him as the magnificent bastard. I'd be even more interesting if Rettweiler was an occupier and Reine loyal to the deposed Queen.

Thematically, the character I'd like to try would come off looking a little like a medicine man from the time period of the Spainish founding (ie invasion) of South America. He'd know the ways of the wild and while not a conjuror of magic, able to brew medicinal teas and stuff. Unfortunately, his world was invaded by the white devils bearing Fire Arms and wearing armor. To help in the fight against these viscious invaders he is among the first to don their weapons and use them against them...
Translation : Vivisectionist Alchemist with a level of Gunslinger/Gun Tank Archtype. The vivisectionist takes care of the medicine man feel, divest itself of explosives, but gains a large understanding of healing due to his knowledge of natural world. The Gunslinger/Guntank Archtype brings in the feel of the Spainish Conquistadors.
Thematicaly I'd take the Alchemist level first, but if I were power gaming I'd probably do Gunslinger 1st.

Amusingly, I'm hoping to take a Arcane Sage sorcerer out for a test drive Wednesday.
Between his force effect and taking snapdragon fireworks (since my to hit rolls suck) I see much shouting of Forzare fuego and dormio dorme if I take sleep.
Though given an 'anything' I'll take my Damascarran clas out for a run in a new group. Bad dice rolls and all.

Well, to be honest, there is kitchen sink and kitchen sink.
We have a player who once was the DM. At the time, he made us play through two campaigns whose plot was totally ripped off mangas, even forcing items from the mangas on people or punishing them if the story didn't go the way he wanted it to go. Also, we had the once-in-a-lifetime game where we played ourselves, as the characters of a book he was reading. If we didn't do what the book's characters did, we lost.Today he's a player (thanks god), and his backgrounds are either cheesy as hell, or totally ripped off from something else (easy to spot : if he seems to suddenly be really imaginative, a quick google search reveals that he is basically playing said character from Dragonlance/Eragon/whatever manga, not even bothering to change names, citations, sentences from the books, making the character integrable in the setting's universe, or warning the DM that he was a bit "inspired" by something else).
Today, unless we found a really good roleplayer able to go against the current and surprise us, we wouldn't accept anime-inspired characters, especially the desu-desu-kawaaaai ones. We have a gritty setting, and even though there is a lot of humor between us players or even almost-joke-characters, anime ones just wouldn't fit, nor interest us. And if your character interests no one, I guess you'll not have much fun, just like us.
Thanks for the tip. I'll edit her username.
You're welcome. :)

My two obsessions right now:
1. Gnome Firebug Sorcerer-taking all the fire spells and taking the gnome fire +1/2 favored class bonuses all the way.
2. A sensei/quigong monk archer. The ultimate 5th character in a party. Bardy bonuses, great in all Knowledge skills, being a big help at higher levels from his restoration-type quigong powers for the party. And you get to give out all kinds of off teh wall choppy socky advice to the rest of the group.

Wizard to segway into Cypermage
or a Bard. Been playing since 1974 and never played a bard. I've played as another character's psuedodragon familar and I continued playing in another campaign after I sacrificed myself and became an intelligent artifact and played as the artifact for a while. But never bard. I think my aversion to bards is my DM had anyone who played a bard actually sing or recite poetry or play an music instrument as part of the the roleplaying, something that I hated trying to due on account that I can't sing (well, I can sing but you would play me good coin to stop real quick) or I can't play a musical instrument to save my life.
Or it could be the memories of the player we once had in our group who like playing bagpipe playing bards and he would bring his real bagpipes (he was a piper) to each session so he could play them during the session.
I figure I need to do a Bard sometime before I die, since I have played every class multiple times but never a bard.
