What Class is your go to for role playing fun?

With all the posts about what tier classes are and which classes are gimped . How you have to build a class one way or you suck . I'm wondering what class is your go to for pure role playing fun and why .

Mine is a Monks or Rogues . I like playing classes with a lot of skills and can sneak around . Jack of all trades kind . I have not played a PF Bard yet but i think they would fit in that group well to.

My roleplaying is not defined by my class.

I'll take Alchemists for 1000gp, Alex.

I love the alchemist class and I love the potential behind alchemical items; if we had a system for making our own, like spells, my characters would come up with some crazy stuff. I love alchemists because of their versatility. Need to hulk out? Go for it. Skill monkey-esque? Go for it. Bomberman? sure, why not. Poisoner? Not my gig, but hey YMMV. Medium BAB and decent spell buffs? Potions as a (secondary) class ability? Love it!

Not sure why, but I was always looking for an alchemist in 3.5 that wasn't just a Wizard who made alchemical items, but a real alchemist. And I found one. And happiness was achieved.

Ok, but what is the class you always find yourself coming back to?

Liberty's Edge

Make mine Ranger.

But then Fighters are fun as well.

1. ranger, 2. alchemist, 3. witch, 4. cavalier, 5. sorcerer or druid (tie)

4. cavalier,

Interesting choice, why's that?

I honestly loves me some vanilla fighter (and vanilla ice cream).

I never make it super-standard, but I haven't really used archetypes yet. In a party where we assume I get to play what I want, rather than being something else for the sake of the group (who is invariably less experienced in my local area) mostly I like Lawful Neutral fighters, unless I'm in a "GM says be non-lawful" game(Though I loves me some LG rogues, too. That's fun RP). In a recent game, I played a Lawful Neutral S/B half-orc fighter who was classy, and, as the only non-chaotic member of the party, sometimes at odds, but conveniently absent for anything that would have forced him to slay the party or report them or die trying.

And I don't mean the GM railed him into being elsewhere in case of party decisions, or I actively left to turn a blind eye. Or even that the party only did chaos BECAUSE of my absence. I would, every so often, be zealous and run off to chase a lawbreaker, or would take point and be the first down a ladder into a sewer, etc. and, in my absence, something would occur that, playing my character, I would have to leave the party.

Sovereign Court

(For Pathfinder) Initially I went with rogue, but I'm stuck between leaving him as rogue or going eventually for arcane trickster. Makes my, "I am the merry model of a modern elvish adventurer song work."

And yes I'm stuck over: bard, witch, wizard, sorcerer as the arcane type...

usually I run elves, but for classes I've not chosen duplicates.

I have to say my favourite so far has been sorcerer under Pathfinder.

The bloodline has become a driving aspect of my character's personality; the inner struggle between rationality and emotion as affected by mystic influences pushing the exploration of the self in new directions.

For some, sorcery is just an excuse to have magic and not bother about the details. For me, it's potential for depth and examination of what it means to be human (or whatever other race you are) and how you develop as you grow more distant from the norm.

More specifically to my current fey sorcerer, it is often about the inner conflict over being driven to capriciousness by the bloodline influence, hating what it does to her but at the same time revelling in meddling and toying with people. It is a drug that she hates and wants at the same time.

Has always been Rogues, but I am really liking the witch now. So at the moment kinda a toss up between them.

1. Summoner
2. Bard
3. Sorcerer
Something about the spontaneous casters I have always liked.
4. Tie between Ranger and Paladin.

Liberty's Edge

Ranger, Bard Archetype, Monk, Inquisitor, and once in a while Barbarian

For me it's a tie between Sorcerer and Ranger every time

I'm normally the DM, but let's see.

Games I've played in:
Forgotten Realms, Kuwait -Monk
Forgotten Realms, Austin -Cleric
Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil -Monk
Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh -Fighter/Barbarian/Rogue
Red Hand of Doom -Ninja
Red Hand of Doom v2 -Swordsage
Homebrew/Castle Caldwell -Cleric, Paladin
Homebrew/College Club -Scout, Warblade, Cleric
Epic Level Campaign -Monk
Lord Protector's Daughter -Monk
Aviona/ In The King's Guard -Monk
Aviona/ On The Frontier -Ranger

So I guess we'll go with Monk.

Oh nice guys ... Keep it going .
We just started a new group and i'm playing a Halfling Cavalier that i think is going to be alot of fun .

For years it was a just a straight forward fighter. What can I say I like the idea of hitting things hard with big shiny weapons.

Recently, I've branched out and taken a shine to the casting classes.

I always go to the Barbarian

I just posted this in another thread, but figured it was worth putting over here.

My favorite thing? I've got a Magus, right? He says he's an Inquisitor of Aroden, right? So, in setting, people would scoff, or laugh a little, but also pity him. Every day, when he prepares spells from his spell-book, the spell book appears to be a book of prayers to Aroden, and the words to cast them, gestures, etc. all seem to fall in line with cleric/inquisitor type stuff to beseech a god to lend strength or whatever. He's "magic domain" and uses a longsword, and best of all, can cast spells, armored, without Arcane Spell Failure, AND, using spell combat to buff or something can just seem like "Swift action: Activate Judgment," and depending on what buff it is (Shield, Bulls strength, true strike are some of my more common ones,) I can say "Activate judgment of (protection, Destruction, Justice, etc.)"

Yeah!

When I get to play instead of run I like to build an optimized character for whatever role is needed in the group. If I had my choice I prefer Fighters and Paladins.

I don't see how playing a certain class is more or less geared to role playing fun. Build a competent adventurer that works well with others not some silly cute useless clown or shadowy loner scoundrel that doesn't like anyone.

It doesn't take bad stats or weird class/race combos to make a character fun and rewarding to play.

The absolute most fun I ever had playing was a human wizard envoker elemental savant from 3rd edition. His name was Paraxis and I loved him for his personality and the great story he was part of not what class he was.

when I acualy get to play a character I want (as aposed to what the party needs) I play monk/???

I like monks and mesh thm well for what ever I end up going with in the end.

And yes I've even done a (ex)Monk/(ex)Barbarian it was fun.

I typically DM, but when I do get to play I typically choose either a Fighter or a Wizard - and it is usually a coin that helps me decide which to do.

I've done other classes... but I always come back to, and start all new gaming systems with an equivalent of, those two.

...I look forward to playing a Magus, as that might just become my new go to class.

Oracle and Sorcerer always always way ahead of the others for me!
I have always enjoyed the idea of slinging around magic like mad way more than any other type...
I also hugely prefer being able to just choose off the top of my head whichever spell I feel like, with the option of throwing the same one out a bunch of times if I feel like, so spontaneous spellcasters fit the bill for me...
I love roleplaying the weird but strangely enthralling magician who harbours secret powers and myterious origins....
So yeah, for sure Oracles and Sorcerers.

paladin

Monks are preferred choice, although my regular GM doesn't allow them. So usually I go with either Cleric or Sorcerer, depending on whether we need arcane or divine magics in the party.

Liberty's Edge

Dwarf barbarians who don't wear armor. Or shirts.

"Careful now, son; you wouldn't want to get that weenie-sticker tangled up in my chest hair and lose the thing!"

<after taking two rapier crits to AC 9>

....but if you just want to cackle maniacally like an insane mad scientist, it's hard to top alchemist.

I'll have to post on recent experience. A gnome witch, but a big part of the fun was the gnome aspect of the character as well. He took vomit swarm so just picture an 3 foot something gnome vomiting a whole swarm of spiders (which would subsequently crawl back in - that was a whole lot of fun for everyone. Most of the part would take part of their subsequent round to comment on how disgusting they found the whole process. I guess the take away is that the entire character (class, race, personality) makes up the fun for me.

I played a LG scout in a CN party; I was the loyal retainer of the father of the CN aristocrat/bard, so I was kind of stuck. The campaign had a barrier that prevented interplanar travel, and the rest of the party wanted to bring it down so a couple celestials could go back to heaven, but I was secretly plotting to betray them because I was worried about the hordes of demons and devils just itching to munch on our tasty, tasty souls.

I've been the GM for years now, so I don't know that I have a favorite, but your post reminds me of one of my players who absolutely loves gnomes, and played a gnome witch in our RotRL campaign. He was always looking for anything he could do to get in trouble or create a stir, and he found his perfect match in the stuffed monkey head in the haunted manor house. After that he was constantly setting off the monkey head shrieks, especially at incovenient times, like when everyone was sleeping and he was on watch, etc :)

The very best one was when Hellknights came to Sandpoint to investigate the death of the second councilman due in a months's time. They detained the party during their investigation and had them surrender their weapons. There was a discussion with the party leader about the fact there were a lot of party spellcasters, and how they should be careful not to cast any spells or use any items that might be construed as an offensive action against the Hellknights. Needless to say, as soon as the Hellknight turned around to walk away, out came the monkey head... :)

It was debatable who wanted to kill him more then, the Hellknights or the party, but we all laughed so hard we were crying... and we still talk about the Bel and the monkey head.

No one said you had to make a weird or weak char or even that you could not min-max the hell out of the class you like to play best . Only reason behind this post is tell what you like to play most and why . Power game on paraxis no one is judging you here .

While a PC's class can influence how I play them, I think of a personality first. Thus, I've played lustful clerics of LG deities; the classic "dumb" half-orc cleric; charitable rogues and wizards.

I'm going to have to say Monk, Barbarian, and Rogue in no particular order (as long as they're gnomes).

I live for those kinds of comments. ;)

Despite liking arcane casters a lot better, I always find myself playing Clerics.

I didn't realize this until I told the DM of my most recent game "I think I want to learn how to really play a Cleric", and she responded with "But Cheapy, you almost always play Clerics".

Part of the reason why I didn't realize that is that they've either been gestalt characters (Duskblade / Cleric who worshiped a god named Khor, and who was on a mission to spread Khor's Light. ), or characters that were only nominally clerics (kobold trapper with the Rune and Trickery domain. The runes were my traps, and trickery let me get around quitely. Also had the 1st level power of the Artifice domain instead of the 1st level power of the Trickery. This let me be a saboteur of sorts, setting traps and disabling objects.)

Upon reflection, I found that the aspect of choosing your domains allows for a lot of cool character concepts. Further, I'm not a RP-heavy kind of guy, so divinely inspired is a nice crutch to fall back upon.

I see a lot of people are throwing in their favor race too .

I have to say i play most races pretty evenly , maybe a slight edge to Half-Orcs and Humans(so hard to pass up that extra feat sometimes)

Bard, Alchemist, or swashbuckling Rogue/Fighter multiclasses. Although I should probably throw wizard into the ring high cha or high int characters appeal to me :-)

Diplomatic Fighters, Self-Sacrificing Paladins, and Military Wizards. Though I have a nigh unnatural fondness for giving voice to piratical-accented dwarf characters.

I always love skill monkeys personally. But the most fun I've had with a character was with a Artificer Catgirl. Terresha was prolly the smartest char in the party, but CG as hell. It was funny when I created random potions of disguise self, or some such, and watched the party turn into random races/genders. And the fun little animal robots I built for fluff was great too. Part of the campaign had us sabotaging a ritual being held in a city. Built 3 or 4 mini-bullettes to dig tunnels to a temple, where we rescued a group of captured priestesses, and then brought the house down. I think they ended up as mounts for some of my followers to use, and eventually was left at a workshop I set up at a friends castle. Also had a full sized mecha-bullette called Big T, who acted like a big rig to pull my mobile home/workshop.
I love playing exotic races, or having a twist somewhere, like playing a LG Kobold cavalier, or a gnome ninja who tells everyone he's a gnomish playwright.

1. Oracle of Bones (Anti-Hero, not to be mixed with a Paladine)
2. Chymist Alchemist (Anti-Hero, mad scientist style)
3. Dwarven Priest (Larger than life Hero - Protection, Healing)

This is why I like you.

From 1e to 3e, I played a variety of classes, but since 3.5 came out it's been fighter for me. Human fighter.

Although, I recently played a Justicar (spell-less Inquisitor from Super Genius Games) and really, really enjoyed it. Up until the moment he died in his very first outing. Sigh...........

Also, I only play Humans.

Scarab Sages

Paladin, Bard, and Sorcerer

Yes, all my favorites are Charisma based. I just play that kind of character well :D

Close Seconds (all tied) would be Barbarian and Cleric. I recently made a cleric of Iomedae who fancies himself a tactician, and a lot of his buffs and playstyle really support that. Plus, the variant channeling from Ultimate Magic gave me a cool, flavorful addition to positive energy :D

For me it is all about the charisma based characters. I find I am enjoying RPing most when I am flamboiant and well spoken. It can be fun rping the gruff, or shy character, but I really stretch my rp chops when my character is bursting in the king's hall with a big speech, or hosting/attending elegent events.

To the classes I always fall back to for rp are
Sorceror and Paladin-(preferably modified with the Unearthed Arcana Paladin of Freedom Model). Though when I can change the magus to charisma based instead of int, I'd probably put that pretty high on the list as well. I am definately going to be interested in checking out the ninja in UC as well. Here's hoping the playtests were worthwhile and great class comes out of it.
