Would anyone be interested in following a painting blog as I pick the hobby up again? It's been about a year since I painted. Back then I painted a Warhammer 40k army, three Warmachine armies, and an assortment of reaper minis.

I'm thinking about starting again and I thought I might photograph the different stages of painting and how I do it. My D&D group has a new slew of characters that all need models so once I get going I'll paint all those up and maybe move onto some Warmachine sets.

I'd be interested for tricks and tips.

And inspirations, especially for "mass monster".
Goblins, Kobolds and Orc's - theres always so many of them to paint, even for a small raid. How to stop them all looking the same.

I'll have to get some pictures of the 36 Kroot I painted for my friend's Tau army. A few choice base skin tones, inking, and colorful jewlery helped keep them looking unique and fun.

Definitely, I've started doing the same for my Space Wolves army that I'm starting on these boards. I'm playing Warhammer 40k right now, but I do the occasional model for our pathfinder game as well. I should post pics of the random stuff I've done to my Flickr account and linkify it over in that thread for show and tell.

In short, I'll be following you here if you do, at least!

@Scipion - Interesting that you should mention Kroot. I'm currently converting 10 Kroot Cavalry and 20 Kroot foot to use in my fantasy RPG campaign. I've replaced the rifle with a selection of blowpipes, javalins, kroot knives and a few random sword looted from previous kills. Most of the assmebly is done, painting should start this weekend, provided I find time. I'll post some pics as I finish.

Here is an album of my old Cryx. I painted them about three years ago. Sorry for the poor photos but you get an idea. These are some of my earliest models. I'm actually trying to sell them right now so I can restock my supplies and get some new models. There's a lot more than these but no pictures of them. Maybe they'll catch the eye of some patron to my LGS who wants to start a Cryx army for $200.

btw, you can click to enlarge.

So Scipion, whatchya working on?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

I need to restock my supplies before I get into anything real fancy, but I'll probably start working on the Magus Paizo mini tonight.

Did you find any time to work last night! I'm here to MOTIVATE, Scipion, TO MO-TI-VATE!

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Haha, I appreciate that. Got it filed, cut, and scrubbed. I'll snap a picture of the pewter and primer it, probably get some base colors on there tonight. The player asked that I match the standard paitn job for him, but with 'normal' hair and a black blade for his archtype.

The Exchange

I haven't painted the magus fig, but the other Pathfinder Reaper mini's I've played with have been fun to paint. Lots of (excellent and annoying) detail though, so be prepared for it to take a bit longer than some others.

It might get a little plain with the mostly black colors, but it works for the illustration so I'm sure you can make it work on the fig!

I've painted a few other Paizo ones. Karzuug, Ezren, some random half-elf. They love their detail...

You sir...

...should post some pics! And check out my Space Wolves while you're at it!

I need to hit the game store for some green stuff and primer. My can is out and the stuff is all dry :( Probably do that tonight after work.

I'll be spending three hours watching Game of Thrones with my mom (which I've already seen) so I'll do some work during that time.

I do the same thing with my father, what a damned good show (and set of books...)

Tonight I picked up a Khador box set, cleaned them, assembled them, and have primed them (also got more primer and new brushes.) Painting warjacks really gets my juices flowing! I'll put up some pics of the parts, and the models primed before I get started proper.

Sat down and based all the metallics on one of the warjacks tonight. I'll get photos of the parts, primer, and metals off the camera tomorrow. I don't think I'll be painting them red like the standard color. It is just such a huge pain in the butt, plus I've got this greenish/bluish/black color I've barely touched and would love to put it to use. I think painting ones military units bright red is kind of silly anyways...

I also found and repaired my fully painted starter box for the Warmachine dwarven faction. Pictures of them will be put up tomorrow before I go put the little fellows up for commission at the game store.

I agree. I love the warjack figs, they're so clean and crisp, with good lines... I used to have a Cygnar force that I'd painted, and the 'jacks were just a BLAST.

When I finish the first jack I'll drop the album of pictures in here.

Wow the first set of pictures I took are at this HUGE resolution. I need to figure out how to use this camera...

What kind of camera do you use?

I can't get that close with 10mp, without it getting blurry.
Is there a trick to getting a crisp photo? One that's achievable by an amateur?

You can get round that, by using different kinds of black.

Boots could be a brown-black, cloak could be a grey-black, cape could be a green-black, etc.
A slightly different highlight can make a world of difference.

No idea, it was my ex-wifes camera. I'm trying to use my moms now and it looks so bad.

So very bad.

Are you using the macro setting on your camera? Normally looks like a flower. Should let you take crisp close in shots.

Re: Resolution problems - you should be able to solve that using either adobe photoshop or the GIMP (free image manipulation program) by using edit -> image size. You could also use google's picasa or apple's iphoto thingy.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

I'd like to figure out a way to do that on the camera so I don't have to for every picture. Such a pain in the butt. I'll get it figured out though.
