My father insisted that "a mathematician is a machine that converts coffee into equations". Since I didn't drink coffee yet I was a mathematician, I was an abomination unto the universe (a perpetual motion machine)

Once I left teaching for tech, I was rewarded with a break room with free pastries and a machine that made the best mochas I've ever had. (True story: When they shut down the department, Hi and I looted all the overstock syrup from the break room so we could keep making the mochas at home.)

And of course, we know mochas are the "gateway drug" to coffee

So I didn't drink coffee until I was 32. Now I drink 16-20 ounces of very strong coffee every morning.

This summer I got in the habit of making a pot and then chilling it in the fridge for the next day. Then last week I had a cup of hot coffee for the first time since spring, and it just wasn't the same. I think the hot stuff is ruined for me.

Rough couple of weeks. Really, really rough.

Let me explain...no, wait, that would take too long. Let me sum up:

I got through the ten year anniversary of my mom's death without totally losing it. But then the week after I broke an irreplaceable family heirloom that she gave me when I was a teenager. Freak accident, could have happened to anyone kind of thing. But the timing pretty much couldn't have been worse and I basically ended up being an emotional mess. Started to pull myself together a bit after a couple of days, and decided to go to renn with some friends. Stopped at the booth of our favorite artist to see what new prints there were this year only to find out that he had passed away two weeks previous. Apparently it was a very rapid illness. So, yeah. That happened. Then school started on Tuesday. And just in case the new schedule wasn't rough enough on its own, my husband and I both came down with a nasty stomach bug. So to sum up, my family are all tired, stressed, and crabby, with extra nausea thrown in for the adults. Meanwhile the kidlet is not having an easy time adjusting to high school and efforts to micromanage him so that he doesn't fall behind like last year are not going as well as might be hoped. In all of our defense, his photography class syllabus is so confusing I can't figure out what's due when either. It literally makes no sense. And the assignments take for-freaking-ever. Of all the classes I might have expected to be the hell class, I would never have guessed it would be the elective. And adding to the general air of crankiness around my house, allergy season has arrived with a bang, and along with it what I am dubbing resting b+#++ voice. It's like resting b~!!% face but for talking. I have to actually whisper before my family will believe that I'm not yelling at them. My talking volume is fine, but apparently the tone that the congestion and scratchy throat creates is somehow inherently hostile no matter what I'm actually saying. Which is incredibly irritating, since half of the arguments this week boil down to, I wasn't screaming at you, but now I am because you wouldn't believe me the first five times I said I wasn't yelling! >.< Anyhow, all of this is really aggravating my depression, so I'm spending half my time convinced that I'm human garbage and the other half of the time trying to convince myself I'm not. Logic of course playing absolutely no part in this whatsoever. Stoopid messed up brain chemistry.

As someone that has seen human garbage up close I can say definitively you aren't it.

If it helps we were also recently ravaged by allergies, it'll hopefully pass quickly.

When my little sister band I finally (after eight years) went through and cleared out most of our Dad's things last month, boy howdy, there was emotional baggage to carry out as well.
Not just because she is pregnant, single, hormonal, and turning forty next month.
(Did I mention that we ate a lot of comfort food? We put our grief and stress and anger into her homemade beignets and fried green tomatoes.)
And we found exactly two copies of an audiobook Dad had recorded of a children's book a friend of his wrote, many years ago. One for my children, one for my imminent niece.
I haven't given my copy to my children yet because I am not ready to hear his voice again after all these years.
