How cool is that! I assume there will be rules for tech failure since we are dealing with tech that is both ancient, and has been through a starship crash?

I know your into comics a little bit, and I was wondering if you'd run across the Rat Queens yet.
“GOLD, GUTS AND GROG,” Part One
Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they’re in the business of killing all gods’ creatures for profit.
It’s also a darkly comedic fantasy series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Hobbit Thief. This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!

How much of Numeria is Expedition to Barrier Peaks/general SciFi technology where it is obvious what the device is and what it does (e.g. ray guns, powered armor, etc), and how much is Roadside Picnic/City of the Fallen Sky style tech where these magic-using semi-medieval rubes are using a device for something other than its intended purpose, because they cannot understand the original purpose or they're only looking at a part of a larger system (e.g. using tools as weapons, using a MRI system as a drink cooler because it has a cryogenic component, etc.)

Does Arueshalae's anarchic gift still cause Charisma drain if she removes it? Can she remove it w/o Cha drain?

Yes, it does cause drain if she removes it. She can't choose to not do so, but she won't do so if it'll hurt a friend. She'd certainly do so to hurt someone who betrayed her, though.

We aren't really building our technological devices to be intentionally alien or to conceal their use. They were built by humans, and therefore they'll be familiar to humans—a laser pistol looks like a gun, in other words... but all futuristic.
There will certainly be some items that are unfamiliar because they have no real-world analong, but for the most part, the trope of "You need to play a minigame to figure this item out" isn't part of the adventure path. Figuring them out is the same as figuring out a magic item—it's just a skill check.
We want PCs and NPCs to be using these items, in other words.

I didn't mean for them to be unusable. For instance, in City of the Fallen Sky, Alaeron has a Numerian orb that pretty clearly casts time stop with a finite number of charges. But it wasn't built for that purpose: it was part of a larger device with greater powers.
Or since the Technic league has always been portrayed has half-scavengers, something like stripping the laser from an industrial welding robot and disabling the safeties to make a laser rifle: its new use clear and obvious, but still not what it was designed for.

A lot of the gizmos and gadgets in Tim Pratt's novels have powers on par with what an artifact can do. We will indeed have technological artifacts, and just as with magical artifacts... what they do and how they look will be VERY varied.
But the bulk of the devices will be pretty obvious to us Earthlings what they're used for. That said... we won't immediately understand the difference between a laser rifle, an atomizer, and a vortex gun. At least, not till we shoot up a few cars and washing machines with them.

I like this. So since it's properties seem to be atomic on some level, stemming from the metals, does that mean I could still bypass the hardness of and disrupt technological devices while in an anti-magic field? That would make the Technic League deadly indeed....
Also, thanks for the tip on Last Days on Mars, I was thinking about watching that lately.
James Jacobs Creative Director |
Sorry if you're tired of answering questions about technology, but I was wondering how the mechanics will be represented. Are they basically non-magical magic items, or will they be more like normal equipment?
They're constructed as if they were magic items, yes. They're not really normal equipment... although there are some relatively inexpensive tech items.

Unlike the majority of the items in the book, the null blade is as much a magic item as it is a technological item... but its underlying materials, the noqual/adamantine alloy, would still function in antimagic OR antitech fields.
James Jacobs Creative Director |
That's a shame. I was hoping for a slightly more inscrutable level of tech. Anyway, I'm not here to argue. Thanks for answering!
There are other sources of advanced technology in Numeria that aren't from humans. Those sources of tech WILL be inscrutable. They won't be detailed int he Technology Guide, though. They'll be detailed in the Adventure Paths as appropriate... MOSTLY in part four.

Isn't it a profane guift, and thus, something she wouldn't use anyway, given her status and goals?

Awesome. I'm loving the half-orc iconic.

Golarion has many human ethnicities inspired by, well, our human ethnicities. When a player wants to play someone based on a real world ethnicity, there's usually a good suggestion, or two, of a Golarion ethnicity that might be a good fit for their character concept, at least in the parts of the world that have already been detailed.
So, my question: If a player wants to play the Golarion equivalent equivalent of Jewish people, what ethnicity might work? Keleshite? Adding to the conundrum (at least in my mind) is that there is a crater of an ocean right where Israel would be on the Inner Sea map.

James, has the Technic League been able to reverse engineer and develop new technology? Or are they pretty much just scavangers?
They're scavengers on one level, but yes, they have been able to reverse engineer technology and some of them know how to repair or create new technological items. Not many of them though.

Weddings. What is your opinion/preference on them?
Yea or nay?
Large with extended family or small with close family/friends?
Priest or celebrant?
Lavish?
Themed?
My preference is that the bride and groom get to set the preference for them. My personal tastes tend toward smaller gatherings for anything, though.

There's not really an obvious choice for that kind of character on Golarion. Not every ethnicity got represented. Keleshite would work though, as would Taldan I suppose.

That is a good question. I'm not James, but I would say it would depend on which sub-ethnicity of Jew you were wanting. For Ashkenazi I'd go with Chelaxian, I'd go with Taldan for Sephardic, Keleshite for Mizrahi and Yemenite, and Garundi for Karaite. If you have no idea what any of those mean I'm sorry for the overly complicated opinion.

The rarest archetype is the synthesist.

1) I would ask about the third one, but it seems like a creepy and evil thing to do.
2) on a scale of 1 (little) to 20 (too much), how busy are you these days?

Actually Tels was more on the mark and I was less accurate than I could have been. Generally I am more interested in the military strategy side of things rather than holdings and administration. Remember Hannibal was a great tactician but he still lost in the end.
So, yeah, who were/are Golarion's best military strategists and generals?
