Does KQ pay a lot for articles? Are there other things you've worked on that I haven't seen?

I'm working on one project for Robert Emerson, and another article should be out in the next issue of Kobold Quarterly.

No we were annoyed at her yelling the completely wrong thing. Yelling for them to play defense when they were on offense, telling them to clear the zone when they were at center ice, etc.

Spoilerized for those who don't want to read my whining:

Spoiler:
You know, there was a time when I would never refer to what I do as a "job". Unfortunately, somewhere along the line it stopped being a "profession" for me. I don't know. Maybe it's the fact that I've been serving on deploying, sea-going commands for 11 out of the last 14 years and am looking at going to another sea duty job when I leave here.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm working in a position for which I've never received any formal training. I'm trying to manage thousands of pieces of highly technical equipment with too few personnel (and WAY too few people with the rank or experience to assist me). I mean, seriously, should a line officer with 14 years of Naval service, which mostly consists of driving ships and employing weapons systems--not fixing them, really be the one coming up with the plans for how to manage cooling and ventilation in an electronic equipment space? And why is it that, when I'm forced to spend time on that, no amount of success in such an endeavor seems to counter the fact that I'm woefully behind in significant amounts of administrative work or that I can't seem to figure out which major training event, operational assessment, or system inspection is coming up next, much less plan for it and execute it smoothly.

I'm sick of getting my butt chewed for the fact that other people can't manage their time, think creatively, develop solutions, plan ahead or do any number of things that I'm apparently expected to do for them...while doing the same for myself.

You know, for me, there are only so many holidays, birthdays, "firsts", or just plain old days that you can miss before you start to question if what you're doing is really worth it all. For a while, you can convince yourself that it is. But when the crap starts raining down so hard and for so long, and you're kept away from your family with almost no chance to develop any kind of friendships outside of work (and let's face it...how many Naval officers do you know who are RPG players?)...I can't help but begin to feel that little needle start to shift ever closer to "not worth it".

So here, I am, three fourths of the way through what should be a 20-year career and I'm finding myself questioning the purpose of it all? Why the hell do I even care? Why do I have to feel so personally responsible when the people under my authority don't succeed or when the equipment they maintain doesn't work?

It'd be so much easier if I didn't give a sh**, especially when, frankly, I don't know how to solve most of the problems I'm faced with. I muddle through each day, bouncing from one crisis to the next, never feeling really competent or sure of any decision I make. Frequently, I'm indecisive because it's too easy for me to see numerous possible outcomes or to see the gaps in my knowledge that I want filled so I can be sure my call is the right one.

Like I said...I'm just sick of it. I'm tired, I miss my family, and just once, I'd like to feel like I'm doing a good job.

Welcome back to the posting world Eric. Its been a long time.

My seminar on Benito Cereno was very interesting. Herman Melville writes on so many levels and the messages in the story are still, unfortunately, needed today. There were about 12 people in the seminar (all parents of St. John students + 2 tutors). It was a very engaging two hour discussion on the book. In closing, the tutor told us that it was successful seminar because we left with more questions about the text and ourselves than we began.

I wish I could find a local outlet for this type of study. My education was engineering based so I didn't have the opportunity to study literature at a deep level. I think my reflective thinking skills have suffered as a result.

Its been twenty years since I graduated from college. If I could do it over, I think I would have still majored in engineering but I would have also pursued a minor in philosophy.

After the seminar, my son went to lunch, restocked on supplies, then watched the student acting group perform "An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein" It was a terrific performance.

Overall, its been a great Parent Weekend visit. Last thing on the agenda is breakfast this morning, then a fun 12 hour drive home.

Yeah, the teachers always get the shaft. It's like mortgages. I used to shake my head when some crack shack would be on the market for $450K. I'd think 'Who the F would ever PAY that for such a dump?' Finally, others started thing the same thing. Now that I am looking at colleges for my daughter, and some of these STATE schools (which are supposed to be a low-cost alternate) are totally out of my budget. I can't be the only struggling parent out there telling their kid to go to trade school instead.

When the cost of something outstrips its utility, then guess what? Fewer and fewer people will avail themselves of that something. Just an economic law. The administrators and their ilk better watch it. People are starting to smell their BS in the colleges and even in the town school systems. Teachers have to buy their own supplies and taxes keep getting boosted. And the School Superintendent makes $150K a year with full bennies and pension. Disgusting.

TR, that college sounds awesome. I love their general philosophy of specializing at the graduate level. However, Benito Cereno keeps getting jumbled in my head with Benvenuto Cellini.

It's been almost a week since the yellow jacket swarm and the dog and I both seem to keep failing our saves versus the venom. She seems as itchy as I, and my once-invisible sting has blossomed into a palm-sized patch of mottled red and white which is swelling back up again. All the treatment guides say "swelling may persist for three days and redness up to seven." Sheesh, glad I only got stung once. I need to update the Wiki, though. Might be time to break out the Benadryl again for girl dog and myself.

It's a gorgeous fall day here - everything is still green but the air is cold and sky is blue. We work 10-3 and then have Council of Thieves tonight.

CoT details:
They finish the hideout of the Bastards of Erebus tonight, woo-hoo! I am interested to see how the cleric of Erastil tries to reclaim the temple.
