OK, I've been a customer for a while. Got a whole bookshelf full of Dungeon Magazines.

But.... how do you pronunciate "Paizo" properly?

pa*i*zo with a long a short i and long o?
pa*zo with long or short a? (rhymes with peso)

Rhymes with 'Pie dough'.

I am not sure about the pronunciation of Paizo, but I have come to believe that the definition is "Open up you wallet and hand over all of your money to us thanks to our AWESOME products! You know you can't resist!"

I've been saying it "Pie-Zoh".

Also rhymes with "Hi-ho", from the dwarves in the Disney movie Snow White.

Paisome...

Mmmmmmmm, PIE.

The Pie-zoh pronunciation is always how I thought it was pronounced. It's always made think of the word Paisano, which I suspect is where the name comes from. It can mean countryman, compatriot, and friend. It's fitting as I'd like to considder the people at Paizo friends and compatriots.

It is actually Greek for "I play." There was an awesome thread in the off-topic forum where one of our Greek fans did a whole etymology for the word. But I like the idea of it meaning friend too. :)

Here is what we have in the FAQ on the website.

"General Paizo Questions
What does "Paizo" mean?

Paizo cofounder Johnny Wilson suggested the name, which comes from a biblical Greek word meaning "to play." (The original Greek word is "paiðzw.")

How do you pronounce "Paizo?"?

We pronounce it to rhyme with "pie dough.""

As greek is an older language than Spanish, I'll bet paisano has it's roots in the greek "paiðzw" then. From paisano meaning friend, it's a natural step to asking what they do together and that is play (paizo), it completely makes sense.

Just like "copain" (i.e. buddy)in french in fact means "compagnon de pain" ... (i.e. "bread fellow" or "someone I share my bread with")

But who cares :D

I care.

But seriously, folks, paisan[o] comes from the same root as peasant: <pagensis. Basically, the Latin word for "redneck" [person from the country or rural district]. They're not related.

That's funny, just the other day I asked, "So, how many weird pronunciations do you get for Paizo!" :o)

Currently, we're chanting either Pie zoh, pie zoh it's off to work we go.. or something a bit more... silly.

You know- after I wrote about the greek pronunciation in the other thread my gf (who is a native greek speaker whereas I am not) corrected me. In Greek it is actually pronounced "pay-zo" and I have been saying it wrong all this time as far as using it in my day to day Greek.

When I played the audio Vic posted of the bible scholar pronunciation tool which says "paheed-zo", she just laughed :)

As an aside as I typed this she just mentioned that in ancient Greek Paizo also could be used to connote flirting or courtship.

My FLGS clerk pronounces it Pee-aht-so, but I still shop there because I'm open minded like that.
