I am 40 and recently moved to Portland Oregon where I seem to be the only person without a tatoo. Do gamers usually have less tatoos, or is it just me?
I think its Oregon more then gamers or you.
Personally I don't have a tattoo though I'm not opposed to them in any manner. Just hired a woman that has lots, including a series of dots in the middle of her forehead that has some kind of private spiritual meaning to her so if people want to have them well I'm a whatever floats your boat kind of guy.

I have a fairly big one of a Viking style deer, taken from a the door of an old stave church in Norway (see lower left corner of this pic: http://i.pbase.com/u32/andreagruber/large/20735238.P8190140.jpg).
I'm in two gaming groups now. In the first one, I think there is only one person who isn't tattooed or actively pursuing getting one. Several of the people who have been in this group would be considered "heavily tattooed" (between half a dozen and a dozen each). In my other group, I don't think anyone is tattooed. Not in a visible area, at least.

Nope, but I have lots of scars from fighting, mountain-biking, and general jackassery.
Ditto for me and scars (at least the jackassery part). But hey- after twenty plus years of construction, I'm just happy to have all my fingers (mostly) intact.
A tattoo would require:
1)the ability to commit to a single defining image
and
2)the ability to submit to NEEDLES without a definite medical need (uugh!)

I'm almost 40 and live about 40 minutes north of Portland. I don't have a tattoo. I notice a LOT of tattoos on people, but I don't know if the people up here have more tattoos than the people elsewhere or not. It just may be the crowd you're running with. I don't know.
One thing I do know: I hate tattoos. I think they are quite ugly. On women they are a BIG turn-off. Especially, those ones they put on the small of their backs. Nothing says SKANK to me more than that! *shudder*
Edit: Disclaimer: I don't dislike or judge people with tattoos. I just think they're ugly.

Glad my wife doesn't have any tattoos, or I might have to beat you up (metaphorically, at least).

Me too! LOL. The "skank" part was only in reference to the small of the back--not all tattoos. Yeah, I realize that may be a harsh word, and I apologize if I offend anyone. But that's the impression that tattoos in that area give me.

I know at least two gamers with tatoos that I game with (out of 12 people). I would assume that gamers would be more likely than the average to have tatoos due to be pretty comfortable ignoring social mores. Though since tatoos have become more socially acceptable (go to a gym and see how many people have tatoos now), it may actually becoming more of a turn off for many gamers (as outcasts they don't want to be seen "fitting in" by getting a tatoo like everyone else). Frankly, I think they are more of a waste of money myself. I would rather buy a painting and put it on the wall than on my bum.

Well considering I heard one actress call her tatoo in the small of her back "bicycle handles" (you know, for taking her for a ride), ...

I would have to agree.
I like tattoos, but I don't like people who get a tattoo "just because" or because they think it's cool. If something is going to be permanently etched on my skin, I'd like for it to have some personal meaning.
That being said, I have two planned. :)

I just heard the term 'tramp stamp' for the first time this weekend. MY friend's daughter (age 13) called it out when commenting on a woman nearby on her towel. It made me LOL!
I got one... and it is in the process of being added to it when I can find the right artwork.
I notice tat's on a lot of minors... that bothers me. Other than that, go for it. If yo do it for the wrong reasons you will regret it later...

I'm tattooed in a nerdish way.
My upper left arm has a gold dragon on it, drawn by a friend of mine. I went for something that meant a lot to me, and since I'm not into religious meaning, I went for something in literature that I enjoyed.
Honestly, don't worry about people with tattoos. Most don't know the old time meaning of their ink or don't care.

21, no tattoos, no piercings.
I've been wanting to get inked ever since I was six and saw the old Gregory Peck version of Moby Dick. After seeing Queequeg, I decided to draw all over myself with a permanent marker. After my uber-conservative parents saw my artwork, I wasn't able to sit down or see straight for a bloody month.
The fact that I still live at home, coupled with the fact that almost all of my meager funds are being diverted into my college fund has prevented me from any sort of modification. However, as soon as I move out, I'm definitely getting something done- probably one of my own designs (I've designed three tattoos for friends: a cross for my buddy Shane after his mother, grandfather, and friend all died within a month of each other; a rose / skull for my friend Josh; and an ankh for my then-girlfriend, Kathryn). I really dig women with lots of tattoos and piercings. Case in point: I have a Kat Von D poster on my wall.
I do have quite a few scars:
- a one-inch gouge on my left bicep from a protruding nail (age 17, working on a friend's Eagle scout project)
- a two-inch scar on my right bicep from barbed wire (age 16, working on my eagle scout project)
- a raised, one-inch scar on my chin (age 6) from a piece of my jawbone breaking off and cutting through my skin (fell out of a chair)
- 1" circular scar on my left wrist: this is how I found out about my nickel allergy. I wore a watch with a nickel/zinc back plate for a week without taking it off, and when I did, a watch-sized plug of skin and flesh came with it.
- a three-inch burn scar on my right forearm from closing my arm in an industrial oven at work (I was tired, gimme a break)
- a half-inch circular scar with a pinhead-sized supporating wound in the middle on my left temple. I was being a retard, hammering in a nail with the butt end of a screwdriver, and rammed the Phillips end into my head on the backswing. Long story short, it got infected, and I was dumb enough to let it heal on its own. Just over a year later, and it's almost done.
- lastly, a half-inch accidental tattoo on my left wrist caused by getting Bombay ink in an open X-Acto knife cut.
And finally, a quote from good old Uncle Henry:
"I'm going to get tattooed tomorrow. I like getting tattoos. They seal off my pores from the world. It's like a coat to put on. You are showing less of yourself. Giving less of yourself to them. This is good. Most people don't like tattoos. They say stupid things like 'Won't you regret that in 20 years?' I'd regret a wife and kids more. Tattoos are permanent. They stay on for life. They make you say something. I am no longer a Caucasian. My skin is white, black, green, red, purple, yellow, etc.. I am a minority."
- Henry Rollins, February 17, 1985

I have four at the moment with probably one more on the way.
One is the Eagle Globe and Anchor symbol of the Marine Corps (which Ironically I did not get done until I had been out of the service for 2 years.) a celtic knot looking thing from a book my grandpa had, and a adult dragon with a wyrmling at its feet for my daughter and me.
Next up I have to add another wyrmling for my son.

I have friends that love tattoos and I have friends that have successfully talked me out of getting stupid tattoos. I think I would like to eventually get some; maybe lobster claws on my forearms, or a squid clutching an atom bomb on my chest. The problem is being a giant mutant baby in a jar: not a lot of real estate and the look of revulsion on the tattoo artist's face is really discouraging.

Pookachan |

I have 4. A crescent moon with a face on my ankle (for when I moved out on my own), an anhk on my arm (for when I stopped drugs), one of those red circle x-men symbols (long story... don't regret it though. it's my geek mark), and two leo symbols intertwined (one roses and vines one tribal...female with a male star sign...duality kinda thing)
They all mean something to me. I have plans to get more. Including one that is a strength (tarot) card a friend drew for a job (but with input to make it personal for me)

Patrick Curtin |

Have three. One is a green and gold dragon on my left bicep. Second is the Moorcock Chaos symbol on my right pec ( I was getting divorced at the time; things were pretty chaotic). Third was this uber Nerd Wastem one I got along with my Army gaming battle buddies to commemorate our two years of gaming and our love of HoL before I left the service to return to civilian life.
I am currently contemplating a monkey tattoo, for obvious reasons :)

It may be an age-thing rather than a gamer-thing. I'm 46, and when I was growing up, "having a tatto" implied something about a person --dangerous, maybe seedy, probably doesn't care what society thinks-- that it no longer does.
How many of our gaming characters have tattoos? (Not magical ones. Not psionic ones. Just permanent ink tattoos.)

You broke your jawbone off from falling out of a chair!?!?!
Please tell me you were at least playing Superman and was leaping from chair to chair...

One guesses that there were intoxicants involved, and that you "forgot" to put out your arms to catch yourself.
