Get well soon PC. I had manflu last weekend myself as my wife called it.
You are right about the merchant but this isn't a nice place and the merchants aren't nice either.
I think you five are a great team so I'm happy to keep things the way they are.
However I am on holiday from Monday to Monday so enjoy the break folks.
Cheers

FW: Sorry to hear about Utak. I'm sure everyone would like you to please give him our best.
Guy: The silk merchant is cheating us. Yrar appraised a higher value.
This is what I need to know from Mr. Wolf. The silks are indeed worth 900 total, and unless he's using a different economic model then regular D&D, should sell for no less then that. Silks (as per pg 112 of the PHB) are trade goods . . . which means they're supposed to be the same as coin in terms of trade. So if this were the standard rules for D&D we basically put 900gp on the table and this guys says "nice gold . . . I'll give you 300 for it!"
PS: not that I mind rules changes. The entire economic model in D&D is pretty messed up, but I need to know if we should feel insulted (or merely offended :P)
Also, as to the Yrar issue, I agree with Ragadolf when he says we're missing a tank. We might be able to get by without a heavy hitter but having that big hammer to dispense the justice was a huge help in almost every fight we were in.

Feel insulted.
I agree 100% with what you've written about trade goods.
As for the Yrar thing you will have plenty of opportunity to recruit in town. Let's see how you all get on without the hammer for now, but thanks for being decisive, Guy, I appreciate that.
Cheers and speak to you all in a week.

No doubt the big guy was a huge help in the damage dishing department. And there's no way Ghari can completely replace him. The question is, can we work around it? In another couple of levels we'll definitely be all right, the casters will have plenty of tricks, but we're all thin-skinned right now. I like wait and see.
With regard to the silks, haggling is in the best eastern tradition. I doubt we'll get full value, (I probably wouldn't give it to us if I was DMing) but we should be able to get more than 1/3. Throw on some of that schmooze, Guy and Patrick, I've got full confidence in you.
Oh, and get well soon, Patrick.

Ragadolf |

Have a nice break FW, see you when you get back,
Patrick- hope your already better by the time you read this, if not, get well soon!
SOrry about my sudden disappearance all, RL sorta snuck up and bushwhacked me. Hard. I should be back to (Fairly) normal, if only 1-a-day, posting tomorrow,... (Hopefully my usual checking 3-times-a-day by late in the week!)

I am back from vacation. We had a blast at Disney World. I believe we took over 1200 pictures over the 7 days we were there. Sometime this week I will get most of those posted on Facebook. The best parts of the whole week were:
1. Cirque Du Soleil: La Nouba
2. Aerosmith, Rock n Roll Rollercoaster
3. The two firework displays we watched
- Illuminations
- Wishes
4. Expedition Everest
5. Typhoon Lagoon waterpark
6. The rest of the park.
Please give me a few days to get back into my daily routine. I had over 160 personal email and over 2000 work related messages to go through. Not to mention the 1000+ messages in my RSS feeds.
Whew!

This is a cultural thing for sure, true for many things but not true for everything. Salt for example (a much needed resource) was not haggled for. You've heard the expression "worth it's weight in gold"? Salt was worth it's weight in gold. No negotiations. I'm sure there were other staples and 'trade goods' which also maintained a regular unmoving value.

Ragadolf |

Interesting. I have of course HEARD of 'worth it's weight in gold', but never really thought about it in realistic, practical terms before. Definitely would depend on the region you were in on what would be worth more.
Question, has anyone else here read the original D&D 'Al Quadim' sourcebook? (I have it, but as I just moved, it's buried, in one of MANY boxes of games and books!) I enjoyed the sidebars, where they tried to impress upon you as a player how important some of the customs of the region are/were. Salt, for example, was used in the 'breaking of bread' with another. Sharing the salt in this way was a double-bond between both host and guest. An unbreakable oath that the host would protect the guest from harm while under his tent, and the the guest promising not to harm or steal (etc) from the host while the bond was in effect. The generally accepted length of time for a 'salt bond' was 3 days, though it could be extended by mutual agreement. (This is my memory from the sourcebook, and may have little or no bearing on how things developed in the Real world!)
Of the 2 stories i liked best, one was of a thief who was robbing a home, and found what he thought was sugar hidden with the money. So he took a taste, and to his dismay discovered it was salt. So strong was the 'Bond of Salt', that he left the house without taking a single item.
The other story was why there are no dragons in Al Quadim. It was good too.

And to you! Happy Thanksgiving Guy for yesterday.
Just so you guys know I have been organising, prepping and running a three day 12th level game over the last weekend. The speed of the Splintered game (from my end) should pick up after this weekend coming.
At the moment I am a bit a zombie where DnD is concerned.
Cheers

I’m sorry for not posting over the last few days.
Unfortunately I think this is a taste of things to come. In the last seven days I have taken on three more willing victims for my private teaching and my wife’s promotion has begun to bite.
There aren’t enough hours in the day, so something has to give. The family time is too precious.
When I think about all my games they are entwined with people that I DM and play with. Choosing one over another is almost impossible because I enjoy them all. When I dropped out of four games last month (when my wife was first told about the promotion) and that left my favourites, favourites that I post wholeheartedly into.
So I am going to stop DMing entirely – for now. It’s that or give up entirely. Maybe after Christmas I shall be in a position to post consistently and have the energy to restart a game then.
For those of you that play in the two games, I apologise for letting you guys (and gal) down and I trust you will understand the decision.
Regards
Andy

FW,
While I am sorry to hear that your DMing must go on hiatus I am happy that you are getting ahead in RL, which after all is what is important. Are you staying on as a player in Tharkad? I hope since Divel is an elf of few words you can continue to play. Best of luck!
Patrick

Sorry to hear that Mr Wolf,
but life does go on, that's the important thing, and I wish you luck on future endeavors. Christmas isn't so far away and we may see you again after, and so this is hardly goodbye, only a 'later', with a hopeful 'see ya soon' tacked onto the end.
Later Andy,
See ya soon,
Joey
PS this can't be blamed on the curse I hope :P

Ragadolf |

FW,
While I am sorry to lose you as a DM, I also congratulate you on your RL accomplishments. ANd also on your ability to prioritize things properly! (Not always easy to do,... this I know from personal experience!)
So, congrats! Thank you for letting be a part of your world. And if/when you ever get a chance to DM again, whether re-starting up an old game, or starting afresh, please consider me as a player!
And to FW and everyone, since we ARE at the start of the season,...
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
I'll see you all around!

Andy,
thanks for a great run. You've been a fabulous DM and Splintered Isles is a really good setting.
As for your reasons, I understand completely.
If you do fire up the game again, I'd be very happy to play. Heck, I'll be happy just to hear from you now and again.
As for the rest of you guys, I'll miss you and your characters. See you round the boards.
All the best,
Tom
