Ahh, submitted...

Pushed the big shiny Submit button, and now all my worries are over and it's just a small matter of waiting...

I know we can't really discuss our submissions as such. Still, I find myself curious as to what form of objects will be most popular. Will there be a glut of capes? A crate of candles? Apparatuses of every description? Only the judges know for sure...

Feel free to chime in (oh yeah, chimes...) once you've submitted too.

Cheers,
Roger

I WILL NEVER SUBMIT!!!!

Oh wait it's a contest... Sounds like fun.

Star Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9

Probably a lot power-gaming type items. I like stuff with flavor (mmmmm...blood) and interesting origins. Funny items might also get a favorable mention too. Who knows.

Marathon Voter Season 8

I figure that since combat is something almost every player is assured to encounter, people will be enticed by battle-ready items moreso than simple utility items which are only usable to circumvent complex dungeon obstacles. Because, really, when someone is browsing the Wondrous Item aisle at Wal-Mart, the thing going through their mind is "I could seriously take out Baphomet with this stuff..."

So I really think other people should submit combat-related items.

So, combat-oriented candles then. Decanters of DEATH. Robes of RAGE.

Cheers,
Roger

Marathon Voter Season 8

Well, candles are only a few inches of fire away from being +3 Flaming Swords.

Scarab Sages Marathon Voter Season 7

Exploding Candles of Doom!!!

"Nothing here is as it seems. He's not the plucky hero. The alliance is not some evil empire. This is not the grand arena."

"And that's not incense..."

Pick me! Pick me! Pick me!

Yes, I've submitted. Can you tell?

I submitted a utility item geared towards offering magical alternatives to non-casters. I mean, casters already have so much utility in spells they can cast. They can even go the item creation path, if they so chose. I think that wondrous items are worth more in the hands of the non-magic user, giving them the option to really show what makes them stand apart from an NPC Schlep.

EDIT: Changed "Wizards" to "Casters" to better represent my statement.

I'm going to submit closer to the end. If I do it now, I'm almost guaranteed to think of a new idea, and then I'll spend the time until the announce the top 32 just second guessing myself.

Although I've got a pretty cool item that as far as I know, hasn't been seen so far in any WotC or Paizo product, OGL or not.*

*Of course, that may be because the concept sucks. But its original at least ;-)

Yeah, I'm a utility-item guy, too.

I think it comes from playing rogues more often than naught for 27 years. :D

You do realize that then you will have multiple alternatives. And then you face the choice of picking the "best" idea, which leads to second guessing ;>

I just reworked something that I thought up a while back when I thought about entering WotC's DnD Design Test.

Dedicated Voter Season 6

Having regrown my nails after the Open Call, I'm now ready to start eating them again - my submission just went in.

Okay, so I submitted my entry earlier this afternoon, now I'm wondering if it was the right choice. My wife wanted me to submit a different item. Oh well, its done now! Good luck to all the rest!

Star Voter Season 6

OOps I submitted mine with a little more words.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32, 2011 Top 16 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9 aka JoelF847

I submitted last night, and of course thought of two minor tweaks already. SIGH.

Liberty's Edge

Item submitted. 132 words. Paladin fans rejoice.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2008 Top 16, 2010 Top 4 aka Alexander MacLeod

I've just put mine in. I'm hoping that the desire for real world mythological monsters also reflects a desire for real life mythological items. I've had a vague idea for a cool item drawn from the real world knocking around in my head for some time now, and this contest has given me the proper incentive to finally write it up.

My biggest worry is that someone looks at the pricing and says, "This is all wrong, toss that entry," before they realize my toy is cold iron (+2,000 gp to add magic powers!).

Ach! It's more stress inducing than the GameMastery Open Call!

A.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9 aka Steven T. Helt

good luck to all of us. i am taking my time, with a long list of toys to submit, all i need do is tweak them, select a finalist, and submit an entry worthy of the iron dungeon master.

hope to see you in round two. location, location, location. : }

Wonder if we ought to have Gary tweak the code so we can't vote for ourselves?

Ah, to read the fine print "and I have not been published as the author of a hardcover RPG book from any publisher." means that because I won a contest from another game publisher late last year I'm automatically disqualified from submitting material here?? That's most unfortunate....

Glass of Half Empty

Cold forged by the abbots of melancholy to curb undue reveling, this unremarkable tin cup is the single enduring legacy of the reserved brotherhood.

Regardless of the amount of liquid poured into the cup, the Glass of Half Empty refuses to fill above the midpoint. Where the beverage departs to, no one can say, as the abbots simply could not bring themselves to care enough to find out.

Warning: Filling the Glass of Half Empty with Sour Grapes will cause a retributive strike effect similar to the Staff of the Magi.

Moderate transmutation; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, control water; Price 30000 gp.

Oh, don't think I'm calling sour grapes or anything of the kind, I was very excited about particpating. I hardly consider myself a "game designer" by mere virtue of being a lucky winner of another contest, published or not, and was simply disappointed I'll be unable to share in this contest (whether I made it past round 1 or not). *shrug* life (and gaming) goes on... I guess this means I can focus on other writing projects instead, perhaps a blessing in disguise. :D

Just yanking your chain. ;)

Congrats on winning the other contest (now shove over and let someone else win). See, there I go again!

What product was it, if you don't mind?

LOL I know, still disappointed though (but glad I read all the rules so I didn't look like a HUGE goob (just a small one). And thank you very much, it was such a shock really (and still is when I think about it). Well, without trying to promote "competing" game companies, open a copy of Bloodlines: The Chosen and you'll find me and my winning entry therein. :)

Much obliged, I’ll look into it when I get home.

In the interest of fair disclosure, I needed to get my entry in before I leave the country for a while, so that certainly motivated me to submit earlier rather than later.

Still, on the whole, I think it was the right way to go. After all, if you're regularly going to spend 40 hours writing 200 words, you might be in for a slow, slow career as a Superstar.

Cheers,
Roger

Where's the rush?

I'm actually surprised that so many have already submitted, especially since the due date isn't for another 12 days. Sure, I've written the first draft, but I'm going to take the next ten days or so to let the idea marinate, just in case I come up with something better, or I realize I've made a mistake somewhere.

Just my two cents.

BD

I'm thinking the same thing.

The only thing I'm worried about is "Judge fatigue". Maybe they're more excited in the beginning and by the time they get to the last day they're not finding our items so wondrous...

Or maybe it's the opposite. Maybe they get swamped with a million (I may be exaggerating a bit here) entries so they quickly read through them. Later when the flow slows down, they feel they can take more time with each entry...

OR MAYBE...
(you see where I'm going with this right?)

The judges are professional designers in their own right, I wouldn't be worried that they would be unfair in any way. Every entry will be given the same amount of time as another. There's no technical merit for getting an entry in first or last, other than if you make typos or think of something to add (and remain under the word limit). :) The only thing to really worry about is that instructions are followed and the entry is a true "wondrous item" by definition of the rules. But we've already had that tip from a judge, so relax and have fun. :)

If your name was not on the cover of the book, you're ok to enter.

Because there are only 5 days each for the remaining entries. Best to get started now, just in case. I wonder how many will win, only to drop out due to time constraints.

We'll I'm a professional programmer and I get tired/bored and sloppy with my work, so I'm allowing for that.

But our point is the same. You can try to mirco-analyze the contest as much as you want, but you should really

My guess is that the eventual winner will already be mapping out his country, tooling up his villain, and making monsters before the 32 are named.

Some people work better under pressure.

It seems to me a little presumptious to write up the entry before knowing what the specifications are.

Not that I'm not brainstorming myself for the other catagories.

In the tradition of classic D&D, I wrote my entire item up into a 178 word anagram. When decoded the item is actually a Medallion of Winning.

Just got mine in, at 197 words... hope they like it!
I would be super stoaked to get the top 32!

Ok, the cover does not have any of the authors, we're only listed on the inside of the pages. So, this makes me eligible to enter here? I'm just trying to make sure I get 100% clarification because I would hate to be disqualified somewhere else along the way provided I made it that far. Thank you very much for your time, Erik.

Oops, still new at posting to this forum, replied to the wrong post. But question remains the same. I'm not on thr cover (no one is), just inside. Does that allow me to participate in this contest?

Thanks again,

David

I'm in. Took me a while to think of the right item. Hopefully it shall serve me well.
I also would be honored just to get in the Top 32. We'll see what happens.
