Useful in Isolation but Hard to Reference, Store

5/5

Useful in isolation and the highest production values. These are much better than the equivalents for 5e. However, there are some serious flaws for use as a Referee (who grabs and stores these cards often):

1) The box. The cards lay flat in two columns. There's no possibility to add dividers for the 300-400 cards. The box is hella sturdy, so they could've been stacked on their edge: sideways or vertically -- like magic. This would allow you to add dividers for storage and referencing the numbering, which leads me to...

2) The numbering. This should be great. However, these numbers aren't in the Bestiary. They're arbitrary to this card deck and, thankfully, matched in the cardboard minis. Which makes it great to store if it weren't for #1. I wish the monsters had canonical numbering in the bestiary so everything was clearly organized and laid out but...

3) The layout. Some monsters are split across three cards. Due to layout. They couldn't easily used a landscape orientation, two-column layout for the statblocks, a trick the books use to eliminate empty space. They have two magic cards worth of space but use one at best. Most GMs will flash this to the players then use them as reference, letting the matching cardboard or plastic miniatures take over representation. There's no indication of which bestiary it's from, so if you spill multiple sets, it'll be hard to organize them again. There's a 1-400 in each set.

Production values are great. Totally support the amazing workers. Just needed a little more practical experience and use by Referee to understand what would be useful as a reference.

Maybe contact customer service & see whether or not they can set you up?

(Perhaps with both the Bestiary Cards & the GM Screen?)

Good luck,

Thank you all for the tips. I think the easiest way for me is to buy this separately and start my subscription with the Advanced GM Screen.

The box is beautiful. Shame I will have to toss it. Could have made it big enough to home the 4x6 cards on their sides and it would have been useful.

Ah well. Maybe Ultra Pro will come up with a storage solution for 4x6 Pathfinder cards like they did with the ACG :D

You know what, the box will work. Pulled out the insert. Just closes with about an inch push up on the box but will work just fine :D

Got mine and I love them. There is no flavor text, so it is just stat blocks and that is perfect.

Some monsters span up to 3 cards of information, think like the Demi Lich if I remember right. But every card has an image of the monster on the back :D

Couple of cards, like Swarm/Giant variants, think Rat was one, that can fit on 1 card are 2 monsters on 1 card.

With the high card count I understand, but woulda rather have had them on their own if I was weighing in on that but I will be pickingup every set of these that they offer.

Alot of the art is straight from the Bestiary. The rest of it is in the same style. Really have no complaints about it, looks great :D

I just received mine, and wow i am impressed. Originally i just thought it would be Trading card size. They are fantastic and high quality.

Is there a List of Creature and card numbers? I would like to print that out and leave it in the box for ease of sorting and locating.

A fantastic product and I see the cost for quality.

I was just looking for the same thing, a list so I can know what card number to go to when looking for a beastie

I would buy a PDF version.

I went through and organized them using alphabetical dividers. Found that while the Worm is listed in the correct order in the cards, it is weird because it starts with Crimson Worm so it was under C. Other than moving the huge Worms to W it was smooth.

Cards are numbered but I haven't seen a list anywhere.

Will pick up each set of these as they are released. Would prefer them to coincide with their Bestiary release if possible :D

Also.... hoping that all of the monsters/stat blocks from Age of Ashes make it into Bestiary 2..... Would even pick up booster packs if they were made available for the Adventure paths :D

My box arrived on Friday, and I brought them to the con I was at for Saturday & Sunday. Definitely liked using them.

A few critiques:
1) The box form factor should be re-examined -- its designed for stacks of cards face down/up, which is obviously not how you want to flip through them. Ideally the box would be such that you stand the cards up, so that when you flip through them you see the names. You can make it work with the current box, it just doesn't close and looks a bit odd. Minor problem.

2) Tabbed subdividers would be VERY nice. Doesn't need to be a full set of A-Z. Even just 5-10 relatively evenly spaced (D's with dragons, devils, and demons will always be over represented) would still be a huge help. However, then we run back into the box form factor -- standing cards upright in teh box works w/o damage the cards because all the cards are the same height, so the fact that the box lid is now resting on the cards doesn't end up hurting them. With tabs, you're going to crush the tabs, w/o the box side extend up to tab height.

That said, I'm loving the cards as are my players. I do need to explore some system for attaching them safely to my GM screen in a way that I can see the rules, and the players can see the art.

I hope we see mini-collections of these for APs. (I want them for the custom monsters from PFS2 scenarios too, but I doubt that would make sense -- a season's worth would arrive too late for most GMs and most of the players would have moved on I think... And I doubt they could pre-plan the full years worth to drop near the beginning.)

They should be! We almost never have things that are exclusive to the store, especially mass market products like this.

The cardboard envelope in my subscription shipment that contained the new adventure path volumes had a ziplock bag inside containing that card plus a second card with an advertisement for the Battle Cards on one side and the OGL on the other.

I absolutely love these and I am looking forward to future boxes. However, I do have one disappointment with the cards. I was hoping that each monster would have its own card and this was not the case. Some of the animals are doubled up on the same card. This doesn't happen often but it is disappointing to not get a card per creature.

Other than that I love them so very very much!!!

The bonus Battle Card was a bonus for those that were subscribers to the Pathfinder Accessories subscription and received the Bestiary Battle Cards and had nothing to do with the AP. I'm sure that in packing the order, my warehouse folks slid the bonus card into his AP envelope to keep the card safe.

And for those that missed out on the bonus card, it will be available in a future issue of Game Trade Magazine and will also be available for purchase from paizo.com(after the card premieres in GTM).

Count me in the group that wishes the storage box was a bit more utilitarian. I which it would have been arranged more like the card boxes for Trivial Pursuit. That being said, you can turn all the cards portrait-style and they will fit on one side of the box divider which might be convenient once we get cards for Bestiary II (assuming they release them). Or, maybe the PtB at Paizo anticipated this issue and have the intention of releasing a special storage box to use with the Battle Cards product line.

Regardless, the cards look amazing and will certainly improve game prep, especially if you use random encounters or similar mechanics where you cannot forecast what monsters will be encountered next.

Agreed. I really love these, so it's a minor quibble. And as you said, you can put them all on one side of the box in portrait orientation and flip through them.

These were so useful in my last game. The only things I'd like to see are a different box and a couple cards that include creature abilities and traits.

I do hope there’s an UltraPRO box in development (although I hope it proceeds more quickly than the equivalent product for the PFACG!)

Liberty's Edge

Just purchased these from my FLGS and I am impressed with the final look of these. My initial fear was that these would end up replacing the Bestiary hardcovers. It is far easier and cheaper to produce cards than a book, with the most expensive part of such a product being the box. But having seen these in action, I can see that these serve a far different purpose... and the possibilities for this format are endless.

Thoughts on the Bestiary cards (and future iterations):

1) As has been mentioned, the box isn't exactly functional outside of storage. While it holds the cards just fine, it doesn't work well for use at the game table as functionally. In most cases however, a GM would only be using a handful of cards at a time, so I doubt this will make much of an impact at the game table.

2) I appreciate WHY Paizo has yet to release these as a pdf product; it would be far too easy for these to be bought and perpetually printed. Pirating of product is always a problem to consider and keeping this print only helps reduce that possibility. That said, I can also appreciate the desire for such a pdf product. As a PFS GM, I would love to be able to print these out and insert them into a prep envelope for each scenario, which leads to...

3) A lot of PFS scenarios use custom creatures and NPCs. It would be nice to see a similar format embraced for statblocks in PFS scenarios, making it possible for GMs to print out adversaries in a card form. While the PFS versions would have to be far more "print friendly," I can see this as a potential tool added to our arsenal of awesomeness.

And finally...

4) My only disappointment in the cards was those that took more than one card to impart the information. In the last 5+ years, Wiz Kids learned how to address this by creating over-sized cards for those HeroClix miniatures that required more space for the information. Perhaps a similar format can be addressed for future versions of Bestiary cards, with any such entries using one 6 X 8 card with an indent to make it easier to fold and fit into the box.

In short, I like the bestiary cards and see the potential for future iterations. Thank you for a brilliant product.

I thought the same re:supersized cards. I would have preferred to have a stack of double sized cards sitting on top of two stacks of regular monsters. (The D&D monster cards do this too).

Still doesn’t do anything to knock that fifth star off my eventual review. These are wonderful!

Thanks!

I know this is a bit of a strange question, but I am just getting into Pathfinder for the first time (switching from D&D) and it looks like this could get quite expensive. ;)

My question is, if you buy this deck do you actually need the Bestiary book? I think that these would be easier to use than the book. (and it would be cheaper if you just needed to get the cards instead of needing to get the cards and the book.) I can speak from experience of D&D that you often will need to use several different monsters which are all on different pages which can get cumbersome. Thanks!

I do not have these myself, but did get the chance to look through them recently. These are absolutely amazing.

While I get why, and the idea behind, not making them in a PDF format. I really wish they would. Given the times, I've moved almost entirely to an online play format, running the majority of my games on Roll20. These cards in a pdf format would make running encounters an absolute DREAM! Not only would they provide quick and easy access to stat blocks, but make for having the visuals for each encounter on hand. I get we do have pawns, and I do have the PDF for that. Sadly, they do not transfer well to token format on Roll20.

I'd happily pay for a pdf version of these (and all future) cards. Just my two cents!

The cards don't have rules for things like grab or swallow whole, so if you don't have the Bestiary you might need to find the rules for those abilities online.

The actual cards are fantastic. :P

So. I don't know if it's just me, but my set of download have a whole bunch of cards that the art is pixelated, some are A LOT, almost PS1 like.. Not the card background, just the art.
These cards:
21, 40, 46, 51, 70, 77, 87-89, 121, 126, 157, 173, 176, 182, 197, 211, 232, 267, 278, 279, 283, 284, 285-286, 288, 289, 315, 334, 336-340, 343-345, 357, 359, 371, 376, 380-393, 395-397, 399-443, 445-453, 455-458, 462-463

Oh good, it wasn't just me. I was just looking through my cards and noticed that some of them were decidedly 'off.' They really stand out compared to how gorgeous the other cards are.

As you mentioned, the background itself is fine, so I assume something just went wonky when they overlaid the artwork onto it.

On a related note, I did notice that on card 242, the Gnoll Sergeant, some of the white border around him was not properly removed. Mainly around his armpits and the top of his head. Again, it only stands out because the others are done so well. I love that these have been made digital, and I hope these few issues get fixed soon! I will certainly be buying the Bestiary 2 pack when it's available.
