Useful in Isolation but Hard to Reference, Store

5/5

Useful in isolation and the highest production values. These are much better than the equivalents for 5e. However, there are some serious flaws for use as a Referee (who grabs and stores these cards often):

1) The box. The cards lay flat in two columns. There's no possibility to add dividers for the 300-400 cards. The box is hella sturdy, so they could've been stacked on their edge: sideways or vertically -- like magic. This would allow you to add dividers for storage and referencing the numbering, which leads me to...

2) The numbering. This should be great. However, these numbers aren't in the Bestiary. They're arbitrary to this card deck and, thankfully, matched in the cardboard minis. Which makes it great to store if it weren't for #1. I wish the monsters had canonical numbering in the bestiary so everything was clearly organized and laid out but...

3) The layout. Some monsters are split across three cards. Due to layout. They couldn't easily used a landscape orientation, two-column layout for the statblocks, a trick the books use to eliminate empty space. They have two magic cards worth of space but use one at best. Most GMs will flash this to the players then use them as reference, letting the matching cardboard or plastic miniatures take over representation. There's no indication of which bestiary it's from, so if you spill multiple sets, it'll be hard to organize them again. There's a 1-400 in each set.

Production values are great. Totally support the amazing workers. Just needed a little more practical experience and use by Referee to understand what would be useful as a reference.

If all the monsters are covered, I don't see what's lost.

But yeah, I wouldn't want them in place of any of the bestiary critters but in addition.

Vic, any plan to produce pack with Ap variant monster/ new monsters /NPC?

I think those would be usefull while running AP as much for stats reference as for showing NPC to the player.

It would be inappropriate for me to be more specific about unannounced products, but I will say that this is not the last thing Erik has planned in this format.

Dark Archive

We may get a set containing the NPCs from january 2020s Gamemastery guide, but we should definetly get a set for aprils Bestiary 2 if sales for this first set are good. ;-)

These look neat. Will the art be from the Bestiary?

That has been confirmed. Also: creatures that didn't have art in the Bestiary will get art for the Battle Card.

And knowing how it went with pawns, one can expect a couple critters get new art in case the old one didn't really fit well on a card.

If it is feasible, think expansion pack, or booster packs. I like the idea of a booster pack being available at the same time, or just after, an AP gets shipped for subscriptions!

I'd pay 5 bucks for a booster pack of 5-10 card for each AP Module release. I know they eventually make it in to bestiaries, but not all do and some take a long time. Could add in the NPC's with stat blocks too.

Love this idea! +1

Are these going to include Bestiary Errata?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

They went to the printer a while back, and I believe they match the printed book.

Any chance of getting a template for these similar to what we have for the Adventure Card Game? Not above making my own for the AP monster stat blocks :D And on that note, chomping at the bit to get updated templates for the Adventure Card Game too :D

A few sample cards would be much appreciated.

Hey, contributing artist Klaher Baklaher has been so kind as to give us a taste of the art to come on these cards!
He uploaded an ArtStation album containing LOCG art here, and an album hat seems to contain Age of Ashes art (spoilers!) here.

These look like the goblin commando, goblin war chanter, ogre warrior (Do you guys think this could be the male ogre from Torment and Legacy??), ogre boss, and kobold dragon mage! :DD

Note, this is all-new ogre art that will be replacing the ogre art previously seen in the Bestiary, possibly not only on the Battle Cards, but also in future printings of the actual book; I believe James Jacobs has told us that the old art didn't quite match the new direction they want to go with PF2 ogres.

Did my eyes spot a Skittermander in Pathfinder style leather armor.

Does this mean we get Skittermanders in 2nd edition...

Oh, that's the art on the new purple volunteer shirts for conventions. That's actually a skittergoblin, a creature that, as far as I know, exists only on that t-shirt. That plus the ACG cards makes it represent all three campaigns under the Paizo OP umbrella.

How are these cards gonna handle monsters with a lot of text and abilities like spells and whatnot? Just reference the abilities with page numbers?

Some monsters span across two cards if they are too big, and in a few cases an ability includes a page reference to the Bestiary.

I like this.

A few months ago I bought an Ultra Pro Binder and it fits the PF 2 Condition cards very well. Will these cards fit well in a similar product?

You would need a different size, as these cards are not standard playing card size. They are 4 X 6 inches (~10.16 X 15.24 centimeters). I'm fairly certain that Ultra Pro offers a similar product that could accommodate those dimensions.

I will need to check!

4x6 is a standard size for photographic prints, so 4x6 photo pages for 3-ring binders are easily found at office supply stores or online (search "4x6 photo pages"). But each sheet has only 3 pockets (2 portrait style and 1 landscape), so you'd need 150 of them.

I'd instead recommend a photo organizer (search "4x6 photo organizer").

Dark Archive

Considering that this is coming out in 30 days, we should see some sample art soon.

I am especially curious for the stats side of a creature with multiple abilities.

For a (sort of) preview, this is the best image I could find online. I doubt the layout has changed much, and it seems to have the same text on the backside as the Sea Serpent in the Bestiary has.

I agree! Thank you for sharing this!

Is there any sort of "clipon" card sleeve (or similar solution) which would allow these to be displayed on top of a DM screen?

I suppose a binder clip might do the trick.

That is exactly what I hoped these card would be; large enough that you can see the stats and a beautiful picture on the other side that I can show to the players! I don't need clips or binders, I'm just gonna show what the critter looks like and use the card as a quick reference.

These cards will be especially handy with encounters featuring several different monsters; I'll be very happy if I don't need to flip back and forth between Bestiary entries anymore! :)

An inverted pawn base clips onto the GM screen quite nicely. Glue two of these together and you have a pretty good stand for displaying things atop your screen. These battle cards are thinner than pawns and won't fit snugly, but perhaps you can use the pawn for display purposes instead, and keep the battles card for yourself.

Franz Lunzer wrote:

I'd be concerned that a binder clip would be too strong and would damage the card. A clothespin might be better, plus they're much cheaper: my local dollar store sells them in packs of 40.

It was said somewhere that the 60+ NPCs from january 2020s Gamemasters Guide would be depicted in another Battle Cards set, so i guess if sales for these first two sets are good, this will become the standard. :-)

Well, tariffs on goods from China went online, prepare for more delays (and price increases) as the entire industry gets shafted.
