It Came from the Sea

Whether from the dark depths of the ocean or azure tropical seas, heroes rise from beneath the waves. Pathfinder Player Companion: Blood of the Sea explores the mystical paths and strange abilities of sea-born adventurers. Discover the secrets of aquatic elves, gillmen, merfolk, tritons, and more. New magic items and spells aid aquatic characters and land-dwelling characters alike. A host of new archetypes, feats, and other options allow you to infuse your character with the power of the sea. Dive into Blood of the Sea and discover oceans of possibility!

Inside this book you'll find:

  • Archetypes for a variety of classes, such as the coral witch and the kraken slayer paladin, as well as a new cavalier order and bardic masterpieces, useful for characters in aquatic campaigns.
  • Rules for playing nonstandard races like cecaelias, locathahs, and tritons, along with a collection of gear both magical and mundane that can help your heroes in the world beneath the waves.
  • Advice on what to consider when your land-dwelling character must explore the depths, and tips on how aquatic characters can overcome the daunting challenges of adventuring on land.

This Pathfinder Player Companion is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and the Pathfinder campaign setting but can easily be incorporated into any fantasy world.

Good for underwater

4/5

If you are going to be in a game with a decent portion of it being underwater, especially combat, pick this up, there are some good options. Otherwise, your not missing much.

Any chance for spells? Maybe a little archetypes perhaps?

Okay -- the three races mentioned in the description (cecaelia, locathah, and triton) have multiple racial hit dice in their bestiary versions. How did this book treat them as playable races?

Spoiler:
They each have an entry that outlines their racial qualities, along with their RP value for that set of abilities. do that answer your question?

Same. it would be cool if it has like an identity it can have at port vs a vigilante identity while at sea.

Anything about aquatic elves, or that "mundane" gear?

Spoiler:

It appears in the section on Gillmen. My reading of it is that the hidden Current can quickly/easily/stealthily transition between an underwater persona and a land-based persona, such that he/she appears a native to underwater while there, and native to land while on land.

So it's basically the same treatment that the Advanced Race Guide gave to races such as the Gnoll and the Lizardfolk?

I don't have the Warlock in front of me right now, so I'll have to look this up later if someone else doesn't answer it.

A nice piece of Merfolk Bard art.
An Oracle Archetype (and a curse).
A couple of Bardic Masterpieces.
A handful of Favored Class options.

Ok, so the Archeype and the Masterpieces are just for the Merfolk, but they appear in the Merfolk section.

Last one; I have decking to stain.

Aquatic Elves
Cecaelias
Gillmen
Locathahs
Merfolk
Tritons

Liberty's Edge

I assume not all of them are 100% balanced for play alongside every race(looking at you cecaelias), but i think it should be fine in certain games.

Thank you Skeld! Enjoy the staining!

It turns out that this book is loaded with new races.

Spoiler:
All races are of the 0-HD variety even if they have racial hit dice in their original bestiaries. Here are all of the new races:

Cecaelia (23 RP)
Locathah (10 RP)
Triton (11 RP)
Adaro (32 RP)
Grindylow (22 RP)
Sahuagin (22 RP)

In addition, Merfolk, Gillmen, and Aquatic Elves gain many new options.

kraken slayer pally archetype: what are the powers and what does it replace?

Dark Archive

Ooh, more info on aquatic elves. They were my go-to race back in the days of 2nd edition AD&D!

The locathah look interestingly playable, at about the same RP as elves, dwarves, etc. I guess it depends on whether or not they can last out of water...

Pathfinder Starfinder Society Subscriber

Locathah can breathe air as well as water with no time limit on either.

Their major handicap is their land speed of 10 feet. There is a piece of mundane equipment (basically a pair of crutches) that can get that up to 20 feet.

Thanks. It was everything I hoped and dreamed it would be. Except done; it's not done. The 5 gallons of stain I bought weren't enough. I'm gonna need about 3 gallons more. :)

Huh. hearing about new races makes me hope 0 hd gnolls and lizardfolks(mostly lizardfolks, but hey evil parties need more options than drow/duergar/orcs/kobolds/goblins) might eventually be a thing featured in player companions eventually :D I mean advanced race guide race builder example conversions don't have alternate racial traits, race traits or favored class bonuses so I kinda don't count them

This is the best news in a while for fans of 0-HD gnolls and lizardfolk (something I once predicted would never get support). If they're willing to do this, maybe there's hope for you folks after all. ^_^

Hey, with gnolls you would have 7 evil races :D Neutral and good pc race options way outnumber 7 core races, more evil options would make some people happy I think

I'm a really big fan of this idea.

Since they released the "playable version" of the dark ones, I started to fell like it would be great to have playable versions of other "not so monstrous" monsters. Lizardfolk, serpentfolk, formians and thriaes are among my most anticipated - I would love to see more options for playing as a formian. I would also love to see playable versions of the satyr, dryad and the pixies.

Now, back to the races in this book: Are all of them illustrated with new pieces of art? How would you describe the art for the Aquatic Elves and the Tritons?

I'm partially with Gorbacz here. Evil PC race options aren't the problem.

Monstrous Evil PC race option are.

What, Humans aren't evil? That's new.

Only humans with the Earth subtype, based on what's been published thus far. (except humans with the France subtype, based on Strange Aeons NPC gallery... those can be non-evil)
