Horrors Await Within

Terrors beyond compare lurk in the world's shadows, yet the bravest of Golarion's heroes must face these nightmares again and again. Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Horror Realms helps bring the spine-chilling terrors presented in Pathfinder RPG Horror Adventures to the Inner Sea region and beyond, presenting new rules, detailed ghastly locations, and unnerving character options for your campaign. Inside the pages of this book, you'll find:

  • Information on how the eerie corruptions introduced in Horror Adventures can be incorporated into the world of Golarion, along with details on three new corruptions to vex your players or empower your villains.
  • Seven locations ripe for exploration in horror-themed campaigns, including haunted villages, islands rampant with cannibals and necromancers, and more!
  • Numerous horror-themed class options for characters, including rules for corrupted animal companions, spirits from the depths of space, exploits of the sinister Outer Planes, haunting bardic performances, aberrant eidolons for summoners, and more!
  • Full details on three new categories of variant haunts—incursions into this reality from the First World, miraculous resonances from the gods, and technological surges.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Horror Realms is a perfect companion for Pathfinder RPG Horror Adventures, and is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and Pathfinder campaign setting, but can easily be used in any fantasy game setting.

Mixed bag of horror

3/5

Much of my sentiment about Horror Realms echoes what Marco said first. This is just really an expanded review of the sections.

This volume opens with 2 pages of useless fiction. I know fiction is getting the runaround these days, but it doesn't belong here.

Next, we head into the rules section. Quirks are a flavourful way to increase the horror factor. These would've made great campaign traits if rules were added. I don't use the arcanist in my games, but the exploits look good mechanically and flavour-wise. These would also be great to build NPCs around. Bards gain new sanity reducing performances and the mute musician archetype. I'm not sure how good the mute musician is, but it seems especially geared toward Horror Adventures with a strong prevention and infliction of mind affecting abilities. Accursed animal companions seem like a great way to add horror and consequence to treating loyal companions as meat shields. The scarred monks has a variety of thematic powers to choose from, each adding a variety of effects to a character. The face collector in particular creates interesting RP potential. Eidolons can now gain extra aberrant traits and spells from the psychic list. The biggest drawback about the rules section is that so many rules books are required to get the most out of it. Haunts close out the rules section at the end of the book and seem mechanically good as well as flavourful.

Each of the regions presented was also given suggestions for which horror trope it would best fit, which I loved. I think I would've preferred a region for each trope, instead of multiple ideas for a region, however.

I did not find the witch fen particularly creative or innovative. Likewise, Farnvale would've been great if Raging Swan hadn't already done the same theme better. In fact the similarities are so close, how is this not plagiarism? Likewise, Kalva could've used more of a dark fantasy theme. I felt it was too broad of focus to be any good. The mushrooms were a great idea, and maybe this could've been better presented in the Underdark? Uskheart presents interesting druid followers of Zon Kuthon, however the locations are largely uninspiring. It felt to me like just another cliche group of spiteful druids with variant woodland animals.

But there are some gems in this section. The first few pages of Geb are extremely well done. Great writing, evocative locals and a very alien feel to traditional fantasy places make this one of the outstanding entries. Hopefully the new Geb book is this good. Shenmen takes us to Tian Xia, and it is a very atmospheric place of ghosts and spiders with an excellent RP aspect. Satravah was the standout location in this volume with a really thematic and interesting location and background. If this had been fleshed out to the standards of Raging Swan's Village Backdrops, it would've been truly outstanding.

So is it worth getting? Depends what you want out of it. The rules seem pretty good, if that's your main draw. If you want horrific locations, look to Raging Swan's Village Backdrop series and read the summaries and reviews there. You'll find much more to your liking. I wouldn't pay more than half price for this one.

Very good new rules, locations are so so, great art, crude maps!

4/5

GOOD:
The new Arcanist exploits, Bardic Masterpieces, Mute Musician (bard) archetype, Accursed companion rules, Scarred Monk archetype, 14 oracle curses, Dark Tapestry Shaman Spirit and Abberant Eidolon are mostly good to great both for players and NPCs.
The Farnvale, Crabfield Island & Shenmen locations invoke lots of adventure ideas.
Most of the interior creature illustrations.

BAD:
The Crown of the World, Kalva, Uskheart & Vale of honorless graves locations are unimaginative imo.
The location maps leave much to be desired.

UGLY:-

Can you include a ritual in this book to bestow the template of the Implacable Stalker on to a creature?

Maybe that's something down the road Verzen.

Regardless, after hearing what Horror Adventures have, I can't WAIT to see this book to compliment it.

Anyone want to put bets down on what new corruptions we are getting?

Ones I would like to see would be:

Fungal: there are a decent number of monsters in Pathfinder (and in horror fiction in general) that slowly convert there hosts into fungal monsters/clones/etc. Seems like an obvious fit and none of the existing corruptions really work for the concept.

Wendigo: Again...people slowly turning into Windigos is a horror staple.

Reptoid/Serpentfolk-related: Also no shortage of more reptilian changes, either a result of curses, infected bites, or some distant taint in the bloodline.

Those would be the ones I would most want to see. Less exciting for me but likely would be a demon related corruption, since devils get their own unique corruption which is pretty specifically tailored to that group of fiends. So something that slowly changes you into a monstrous demon doesn't seem too unlikely.

Any other obvious possibilities out there?

MMC,

I do think Wendigo is a possible corruption. But I also think specifically maybe, Mutant or Mana Waste Mutant? Possibly Cyborg?

Super down for wendigo.

Exactly.

Especially after all the times we've read about guys turning into Wendigos in Pathfinder APs and such.

Drow corruption

Ehhh, pass.

Wendigos though...

Based on existing canon, the Dark Fate is far too fast-acting for the corruption system to be appropriate.

As for wendigo... maybe. It also tends to be fast-acting (although not nearly so much as the drow thing), but it's easier to stretch out that way. It still would take some justification, though, and couldn't replace the existing process in all cases. In addition, I'd prefer to see more reasons for its existence when we already have ghoul as the "cannibal corruption".

It should still have daily saves vs. advancing corruption, though... which is pretty fast for the corruption system. (Maybe if you advanced their manifestation level faster as well...)

That's what I really like about the Corruptions, they're the slow burn process :3

Ghoul I suppose could cover some of the Wendigo stuff but I believe they are distinct enough for Wendigo to warrant its own. It's also a case of being Ghoul (undead)(physical) vs Wendigo (curse/possession)(mental/spiritual).

Another thing is that you wouldn't even need to actually eat flesh to contract it. In Myths, Pathfinder, and other media Wendigo-ism functions as a full blown curse, with the Wednigo or Wendigo spirits wearing down a person's will and sanity before they finally snap.

Corruptions

Nanite

Mythos based one

Mutant/Mutation

Plant based one

Oni

Wendigo

Psychic based one

I thought there already was a Mythos Based One, Dragon.

While I understand Kal's reluctance on the fact that stretching out Wendigo can make for some weird situations, I do think if you look at something like X-Men's Wendigos you might have something to work on.

But then again I could be wrong.

Not sure how I feel about the plant based one, but maybe like psychic controlled mind puppet?

Silver Crusade

Yeah, Mythos covers a LOOOOOOOTTTT of shit, what did you have in mind?

Giant featherless penguin Corruption?

Me or Dragon, Rysky?

Cause if it's Mythos Corruption maybe like Colour out of Space perhaps?

Adds Gnome Druid/Occultist that calls himself The Penguin to list of character ideas for Hell's Vengeance.

Dragon.

As to yours we have the Deep One and Hive (Xenomorph).

More like otherworldly aberration with tentacles, extra eyes, misshapen body, extra limbs, etc.

I had something like this in mind myself... although my inspirations were a little more recent than Lovecraft.

Mm, this is true Rysky.

Though I consider Hive/Xenomorph less HP Lovecraft and more Sigourney Weaver. ;)

Liberty's Edge

Things I would like to see:

Expanded options for corruptions.
A few more Archetypes that Tie the horror theme into golorian, with reference to the various dread encounters on the different continents.
More spells, feats and abilities to add to possible aspects of horror.
More player options to explore
Exploration of the Various horror groups within golorian.

It has been confirmed we will be getting more corruptions, at least two (one demon-themed, one plague-themed). I think we will get a few archetypes, but Mythic Realms and Occult Realms generally kept the player options within the first chapter as I recall, so I wouldn't expect many spells and feats, much less too many other player options, with the rest taken up by various horror-themed locations and individuals.

Yeah I suspect Luthorne is correct. While getting more corruptions will occur, I don't see the crunch aspect been very high.

That being said, I DO hope Horror Realms opens up my favorite place: Bastardhall! :)

Dark Archive

p. 210 is she holding a corn-dog?

I believe the number of new corruptions has been confirmed to be three - Demonic, Plagued, and one yet-unknown. ^_^

Expectation management: I don't think we'll ever see Bastardhall in print, or at least not for years and years. I've gotten the impression that Mr. Schneider is holding it for his convention-exclusive delves.

If it doesn't the Illegitimate Chamber is always open.

Kal,

I know but I don't think we'll get Gardens of Lead or else Ghasterhall/Palace of Travesties. Saffron House maybe?

Sadly, I doubt it'll be the Saffron House either. (That's one that I'm dying to write, but he has very specific plans for it.)

The Garden of Lead, Ghasterhall, Casnoriva... almost anywhere in Virlych is ripe for exploration. However, I'm guessing that we'll get a more subtle or civilized Ustalavic location. Just a feeling... and probably wrong. ^_^

Isabelle,

Well we'll see when the book comes out in October.

Silver Crusade

Really, if we had a void elemental saturation in here, I'd be pretty happy. Aside from that, I'm not expecting anything too awesome aside from some choice Ustalav real estate.

Jolly,

Yeah I expect to see some interesting Ustalav real estate choices. For me, though I'd love to see more Bastardhall.

Grand Lodge

Here is to hoping that the Precipice area of Absolom gets a little love...

Ustalav tourist board-home of the best liars in all of Ustalav. On the other hand, Getting a good mixture of real estate and thematic locational curses/effects can really provide some fun moments.

I'm actually suprised no body has talked about the locational horror rules. from woods that can compel people to commit suicide, to rows of creepy dolls whose heads follow you no matter how stealthy you are, those really made me look over the book again in great detail. So many evil things come about with such details. Exploding windows, Traps with loud counterweights that set off a nest of bats, and having the collapsing building or temple being the nightmare-scape of someone waking up(don't get out...well have fun not existing in the real world any more(if physical...Mental your kind of stuck in a near perminant coma)).

I suspect no one is talking about those things here because they are from Horror Adventures. This thread is about Horror Realms, which hasn't even come out yet. :)

Gisher's correct, I'd imagine something else other than stuff from Horror Adventures, but certainly along its lines.

I would really like to know more about this one before I decide that I will get it or not.

Aberrant Eidolon? Yes! I'm hoping it's not focused on grappling like Protean- it'll make a good replacement for one of my characters.

Nice cover art.

Well it wouldn't be much of a horror/fear theme if they just had a vampire. :p ;)

But yes!! I love the info! More stuff for planar incursions! :D

Sounds very interesting...I think I'm sold! Definitely curious about that technologically-related haunt...an aberrant eidolon definitely sounds interesting as well!

I figure most eidolons that aren't unchained are aberrant, Luthorne.

But then again I've had to fight a rash of summoners lately...
