In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town—and perhaps all of Varisia. The Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path begins with this goblin raid and takes players on an epic journey through the land of Varisia as they track a cult of serial killers, fight backwoods ogres, stop an advancing army of stone giants, delve into ancient dungeons, and finally face off against a wizard-king in his ancient mountaintop city. This hardcover compilation updates the fan-favorite campaign to the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules with revised and new content in more than 400 pages packed with mayhem, excitement, and adventure!

Celebrating both the fifth anniversary of the Pathfinder Adventure Path and the tenth anniversary of Paizo Publishing, this new edition expands the original campaign with new options and refined encounters throughout, incorporating 5 years of community feedback.

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition contains:
  • All six chapters of the original Adventure Path, expanded and updated for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
  • Articles on the major locations of Rise of the Runelords: sleepy Sandpoint, the ancient Thassilonian city of Xin-Shalast, and others.
  • Revelations on the sinister magic of Thassilon, with updated spells, magic items, and details on tracking sin points throughout the campaign.
  • A bestiary featuring eight monsters updated from the original Adventure Path, plus an all-new terror.
  • Dozens of new illustrations, never-before-seen characters, location maps, and more!

FAQ:

Q: Will you be doing hardcover compilations of all of your Adventure Paths?
A: No. This is a special celebration of our very first Adventure Path on its 5th Anniversary. Several of the original volumes of Rise of the Runelords have been unavailable in print for a long time, yet it remains one of our most popular adventure paths; that circumstance presents a unique opportunity for us to expand and update it for use with the Pathfinder RPG, and to apply lessons we've learned about making Adventure Paths over the last half-decade. Our other adventure paths are largely still in print, and many of them were designed for use with the Pathfinder RPG to begin with; we have no plans to recompile them.

Q: Is there anything missing from the original AP volumes?
A: Yes—otherwise, this book would be more than 600 pages long! Some of the monsters and other things created for Rise of the Runelords are now part of the official Pathfinder RPG rules, so they're not reprinted here. The original volumes also included monster ecologies, bestiary entries, and other campaign setting material that isn't directly used in the adventure itself; those items are also not present in this collection. The Pathfinder Journal fiction featuring Eando Kline is not presented here either, but it has been compiled—along with the installments from the subsequent two Adventure Paths—as The Compass Stone, now available in ePub form. We have also replaced some of the artwork from the previous edition, and replaced the six individual introductions with one new one.

Q: What is included in the digital version?
A: In addition to the full version, the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition download includes the Interactive Maps and a Lite version for reading on portable electronic devices.

Epic introduction to Golarian, updated beautifully.

5/5

This is a beautiful update to the first Golarion based AP Paizo released. It consolidates all the volumes of the original into one easy to use book. Lots of the artwork has been updated significantly improving on many of the pieces from the original. The original stuff wasn't bad, just a big cartoony. It also updates the stats of everything using the Pathfinder 1st edition rules.

It was what kicked off the world's introduction to Golarion. This volume gave it a facelift and nice boost. My group took about 2.5 years to play through it to completion. Right around 500 hours of play. So tons of game play in it. It was the first campaign I've ever "completed" as a GM. It was only the 2nd campaign I've ever "completed" as a player or GM. I've played in dozens of other campaigns that never completed and only fizzled out. My players loved it and still talk about it and we are 1/3 of the way through Skull & Shackles having been playing it for a year.

Of all the APs Paizo has released this one likely has the most official and unofficial support for it. There are thousands of pages of fan material done for it. Paizo message boards, Facebook groups, fan pages, fan zines (Wayfinder #7 is completely devoted to it) and more have been done for it. Giving GMs unparalleled resources and support for it. It's no wonder it is one of the most popular APs they've done. I highly recommend all the additional support for it. Especially the fan stuff, it fills in lots of missing holes that just couldn't be filled in the AP itself.

I'm not sure how I feel about the construction quality of the book itself. We played for 2.5 years, but we played virtually via Fantasy Grounds with the data module for it there. A lot of my referencing and work was done through the module on the computer. I'd say in the end I only used the printed book about 1/3 the time I would have if I would have played through it in person. The binding is very loose for what I consider a small amount of usage. Other than the binding the cover itself is in good condition. I've got a feeling that had it gotten nothing but in person play and reference the binding would have fallen off by now. I'm not hard on my books, I always use the proper method of easing the binding of a new hardcover book, and I'm not rough in my handling of them. So this feels like it isn't made with the quality I would expect.

Book construction quality aside, this AP checks all the high adventure checkboxes. Wizards, dragons, goblins, magic, ancient civilizations, epic treasures, giants, ogres, dungeon crawls, sieges, wilderness exploration, haunted houses, city based stuff. You name it. This fully deserves the 5 stars I give it.

A Legendary Campaign Receives the Deluxe Package it Deserves

5/5

NO SPOILERS

I honestly don't even know where to start in reviewing this book. It was my bible for the longest campaign I've ever ran, and I've paged through its 428 pages so many times, I'm surprised my copy is in as good of shape as it is. Equalled only by the Curse of the Crimson Throne hardcover compilation, the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition is the most detailed, impressive, and gorgeous presentation of a campaign I've ever seen. It's a testament to James Jacob and the wonderful visual and art design folks at Paizo for putting it together. In addition to the core adventures, the book includes an incredible array of supplementary material throughout its appendices: gazetteers, bestiaries, new magic items, and more. And interspersed throughout are full-colour, detailed maps, high-quality artwork of NPCs and monsters, handouts, useful sidebars to help the GM in running particular scenes, and more. I really can't rave enough about it.

I've already reviewed the substance of each of the six chapters of the adventure path in my reviews of issues # 1-6 of the monthly publication they originally appeared in (available on the Paizo website). This Anniversary Edition is no lazy cut & paste compilation or mere updating of the original 3.5 rules to Pathfinder. Everything has been refined, revised, polished, and packaged together to make a whole that is even better than the sum of its original parts. James Jacob read through countless posts on the forums about the original adventures and added encounters, explanations, and more to help everything flow even better. I've compared the original versions to this revised package, and with only a couple of exceptions, the revisions are a sound improvement.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the best presentation of a classic fantasy role-playing campaign available. You'll get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of it, experience characters growing from battling goblins at level 1 to battling the greatest threats the setting has to offer at level 18. It's a satisfying, meaty, epic campaign, and this Anniversary Edition does it full justice.

Also on Fantasy Grounds!

5/5

I don't understand why this is not mentioned here but by paying 60$ you get both the pdf version of the adventure as well as the Fantasy Grounds VTT plug in that saves you TONS of prepping. This adventure is excellent, with a lot of scary and funny moments and is a must-buy for all Pathfinder fans out there!

They all need this treatment

5/5

I have the original softcovers. I collected them up to the 50's and when I changed jobs money was tighter and I couldn't keep up. Recently going back to pick up some of the ones I missed I was shocked to see prices as high as 234.00 for a single softcover. There are a lot of Pathfinder fans who didnt get the softcovers when they were first released and these hardcovers are excellent as well as being affordable.

The book itself is solid. Takes up less space on my shelf, is a great first series of adventures, looks beautiful, is fun to play and is just overall well worth the money i spent on it. I will also be picking up Crimson Throne hardcover and hope they continue on and it was the adventure paths that drew me to PF in the first place.

On collections of other APs:

They've answered this several times before.

There are currently no plans to do collections of any other APs. There are important business reasons that seem to make it a bad idea for Paizo to do this for other APs. The basic problem is that they'd essentially be competing with their own products, so there wouldn't be much room for net benefit, and they'd risk messing up their core business model. The circumstances surrounding Rise of the Runelords were unique and particular to just RotRL.

That being said, those business conditions could change in the future. And some folks said at PaizoCon that if sales of RotRL Anniversary Edition are extremely strong, doing other collections could become a more likely possibility. Curse of the Crimson Throne has been the most commonly mentioned candidate if they ever do this again.

"Some folks" are likely not the folks who would actually be making that decision.

It doesn't matter how well it sells—we will not be training customers to avoid purchasing APs upon release by giving them the expectation that a better and cheaper collected edition will be released in the future. Rise of the Runelords is an exception, not the start of a pattern.

I really doubt that anyone who is actually interested in buying APs in the first place would want to wait decades (if one is released every 5 years, Shattered Star's hardcover wouldn't be released until 50 years from now) to buy a new AP because it might at some point in the (very) distant future be released as a hardcover.

But I certainly understand the decision not to release further hardcovers.

I've actually decided that I'm glad it's not a regular thing. It seems to me that there's room for one special, out-of-the-ordinary product each year. It's great to get 'tidied up' versions of old products, but it's better (in my opinion) to get something brand new.

A big part of what makes the RotRL compilation special to me (and why I'm getting both versions) is the celebratory "look how well we've done" feeling. If it became regular, I suspect it would also become far less special.

Gimme more new stuff! :)

But they might decide not to subscribe to Shattered Star if a revised Legacy of Fire was coming out next year (as an example).

Yes, which is why I understand the decision not to release more of them.

Edit: I also agree that new stuff is better than revised old stuff in the vast majority of cases, and that RotRL is a special case.

Is the anniversary edition going to stay in publication for a while or is this going to be a limited release only? Cant find any info on it, of course my google fu may be weak today.

I ask only because I see a bunch of copies at the LGS, but am a bit broke & may be so for a while. >_>

I imagine this book is like most of their books. They do a print run of all preorders +%. I am not sure what the bonus over is, seems like I recall 20% but I honestly don't know. Most of their books take 3 years to sell out. A few have sold out faster though. I would imagine you have some time before this one sales out.

I gave in today and bought the pdf, downloading it right now. With the book, I will either see if I can get it in some FLGS or waint until the german translation is available, probably next year. Supporting the german company occasionally (mostly for hardcovers) is a good thing too.

My VC not only picked up a copy of this for me at Paizocon - he also got it signed by the authors, etc. Now I just have one problem: identifying the signatures! Can anybody help? (I wasn't there when the book was signed, so I couldn't take notes).

I've temporarily put a scan of the page with the signatures here

There are three columns of signatures - four in the left column, three in the middle column, and four in the right column (for a total of eleven).
The topmost signature in the left column is fairly clearly Wayne Reynolds. Then the six authors of the individual chapters are:

1) James Jacobs (2nd entry in column 3?)
2) Richard Pett (1st entry in column 3?)
3) Nicolas Logue (3rd entry in column 1?)
4) Wolfgang Baur (4th entry in column 1?)
5) Stephen S Greer (1st entry in column 2?)
6) Greg Vaughan (3rd entry in column 3?)

If all those identifications are correct, I'm left with:

2nd entry in column 1
2nd entry in column 2 **
3rd entry in column 2 (Erik Mona?)
4th entry in column 3 (Robert Lazzaretti?)

Can anyone:
a) confirm (or correct) my identifications
b) identify the two remaining signatures

(** I think the 2nd entry in column 2 could well be Sean Reynolds)

You've definateley got James right - it matches his intro signature. Interestingly, Erik has never done a AP intro (at least none of the issues I own), and Rob doesn't sign his maps, but I'd agree with you on them.

The second one in column 2 is probably Sarah Robinson, the Art Director

Going to pick up my book today when the hobby store opens, got a question though for those of you who have it, or have done the campaign.

What are the best flip and map packs to get that covers a lot of the terrian thoughout the modules?

I have more than a few, but being new to Pathfinder and never playing any Rise of the Runelords...

Cheers, thanks

So I downloaded the PDF and have been perusing it in anticipation for running it for my friends. I'm using a VTT, since I'm in Virginia and my friends live in Louisiana. Overall, I'm really liking it - the layout, the changes, etc. There are, however, just a few minor points that bug me. First, the very first encounter isn't included in the interactive map file, and the map in the book has writing on it, and a reference to the GameMastery flip mat. I can understand why Paizo would want to cross-link products, but it is kind of a bummer that I can't use the map in the product I bought. There's a fan-made version over in the RotRL forum but it doesn't have the extra festival stuff. The other issue is also map-related, in that there are no maps for the added crypt encounter at the beginning. (And there never were for the Monster in the Closet or Shopkeeper's Daughter encounters, though there are fan made versions of those, too.)

Personally, I'd love to have a map for every part of Sandpoint, including building interiors, but I realize that isn't feasible. But ones for areas where combat could happen would be nice.

Have you tried using the map from the PDF?

When I grab the map from the PDF I get just the background map, with no writing on it. That's been the case with everything I've tried to extract from this book, scenarios, and anything else I've got as a PDF. What I end up with is pretty close to what I'd show to the players (with the exception of the odd secret room or door on some maps); all the extra annotations, GM-only details, etc. aren't included.

Thanks, Lisa (and apologies to Sean and to Sarah for getting confused by the SR - I should have taken more notice of the colour of the ink).

We (my wife and I) thought that your signature should have been present, but even with that assumption I couldn't convince myself that was what that second one was. I couldn't ask for a more definitive identification!

Huh. Well don't I feel silly. I had been doing captures out of the interactive map, which was time consuming (first remove labels, set on player view w/ grid, select area for cropping...) and this works much better, thanks! That said, it doesn't work for any of the final maps for the ending location in Burnt Offerings (haven't tried beyond that) - instead I got a bunch of black areas on the parchment style background.

I believe this kind of thing is currently being looked into by the Paizo folks (I'm not sure if it was for RotRL or some other product; if it wasn't for RotRL your post will have let them know the problem exists there as well). I expect they'll find out what is causing it, and update the downloads when there is a solution.

So I am still undecided as to if I want to drop the forty something to get the new PDF.

My primary motivator would probably be the content regarding Thassilonian magic (spells, magic items, and the "Sin point" system)
Granted.....I'm a bit of an art whoar as well....;)

So sell me on it.
Is the updated content worth the forty bucks ?

That's amusing. My signature is most noticeable for having a Cyrilic 'M' instead of a cursive one. Back in 9th grade, I thought the Cyrilic was so much cooler, so I started using it. :-)

Spoilers...

Just ran my party through Skulls Crossing. I'm a generous GM so I often have a tough time challenging my players. They had a cakewalk with Grazuul but the added encounter with the Skull Ripper nearly decapitated our dwarven paladin who has been having a heyday with the mostly giant (ogres, trolls) adventure. Our goblin ranger/rogue/shadowdancer kept failing his save on its dread visage ability. It was saving against the wizards fire spells when he would beat its SR. Finally they got Grazuuls trident to the paladin who with a crit felled the monstrosity. Fun encounter.

That's not the full question you should be asking.

Is the updated content, including both new encounters, revisions to existing ones, and more to make the AP fit seamlessly together; new art; interactive maps; handouts; monsters not found in the Bestiaries; encounter tables for several areas of Varisia; and hypertext links for easy navigation more valuable to you than what you would otherwise spend the $40 on? If you already have all the old adventures, and none of that seems interesting (or not enough of it does) then spend your money elsewhere, or invest it. And if you don't have the old adventures (I didn't), I'd say it is definitely worth it.

I know. I pre-ordered a copy from B&N due to amazon at the time having the same date of release as B&N does now. I just hope that B&N get their shipment of this book, so I can get it before I return to college in late August. It will be close but I cross my fingers in hopes of a notification of shipping.

I buy from them because I get it sooner and they get more money.

If it was only a little more money, I'd buy it from them anyhow; but the book's half again more to buy direct from Paizo and then shipping will take it up to nearly $100; more than twice what Amazon.ca will cost me; plus with the two week shipping time from Paizo I don't think I'd get it that much faster. With the subscriptions, the price difference is less pronounced to start with and the pdf copy is enough to get me to buy direct - I'd like to see that be the norm for all the hardcopy books; the physical book is much more enjoyable to read, but the pdf are much more useful for actually running the game.

Well... let me put it this way:

My copy arrived on July 23rd. In Germany. Which might be a tad farther than Canada, shipping-wise.
Now, if amazon.ca delivers August 14th, that's still 3 weeks later.

Of course, the argument about costs is perfectly valid; it's just that even with Paizo's shipping, you will get your stuff considerably earlier.

Making the PDF available to anyone who buys a copy direct reduces the current value of a subscription. Maybe some people subscribe predominantly for that perk - if so, then removing it risks paizo's subscriber base.

Perhaps the book from amazon plus the PDF from paizo might be one way for you to go?

You also get the PDF when it ships - generally a week or two before the street date.

On collections of other APs:

There are currently no plans to do collections of any other APs.

I don't talk about all other APs but only the 3.5 OGL APs (we speak of 3 APs)

There are important business reasons that seem to make it a bad idea for Paizo to do this for other APs. The basic problem is that they'd essentially be competing with their own products, so there wouldn't be much room for net benefit, and they'd risk messing up their core business model. The circumstances surrounding Rise of the Runelords were unique and particular to just RotRL.

Why 3 APs collection isn't "competing" their own product?!?

I suppose not many guy buy CotCT o SD o LoF APs...reprint in a collection mean sell material that in this moment they do not sell...

It doesn't matter how well it sells—we will not be training customers to avoid purchasing APs upon release by giving them the expectation that a better and cheaper collected edition will be released in the future. Rise of the Runelords is an exception, not the start of a pattern.

Sorry i did'nt read this post

I agree with your idea infact is a nosense collect APs after the 25th but the first 24th are a non PFRPG

People might choose to not buy the current AP and instead pick up old stock. In that sense, a compilation of an old AP would compete with their flagship product. Any loss of current AP sales is a significant loss.

I really doubt that anyone who is actually interested in buying APs in the first place would want to wait decades (if one is released every 5 years, Shattered Star's hardcover wouldn't be released until 50 years from now) to buy a new AP because it might at some point in the (very) distant future be released as a hardcover.
But they might decide not to subscribe to Shattered Star if a revised Legacy of Fire was coming out next year (as an example).

It's a very easy solvable problem: is enough put the collection APs in the AP subscription of the date of collection release

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Then some of us who bought it the first time will drop our sub (which is the same problem of damaging sales in paizo's core line) or we'll buy it and complain about being sold something twice. The paizo guys are smart, there's no easy way to do it because we all want different things. It's easy for each of us to hypothetically cater to our own preferences, but they have to stump up real money to please lots of competing preferences.

This was a unique opportunity to celebrate where they've come from and how much they've achieved in the last five (ten) years. It would be unwise to expect or hope for it to become regular.
